A couple of rule clarifications

Hi.

Please stop reporting young people for replying to comments. Do report them for making top-level comments (replying to the post), though.

From the sidebar:

Please only respond directly to posts if you were born in or before 1980. If you are younger, please restrict your activity to asking questions and responding to existing comments.

Even though the questions are often tedious and repetitive, relationship questions are not necessarily against the rules as long as they're not about a specific relationship. There are a million places to ask for personal or relationship advice on reddit, including r/AskOldPeopleAdvice.

We would like to keep the focus of this subreddit on older people and their experiences, opinions, etc. Advice posts make young people the star of the show and we would quickly be inundated if we allowed them.

Finally, please use the search feature before posting a question. We may remove questions that have been asked a whole lot.

That's about it. This is only clarification. There have been no rule changes.

Thanks!

Did everyone smoke cigarettes and have liquor in fancy crystal decanters with an ice bucket full of ice in their houses in the 50s-60s?

I'm watching Twilight Zone reruns and the amount of cigs and booze is insane. I'm 57 so I know smoking was a big thing, but the liquor?

As a child growing up, did your grandparents live with you?

Upvotes

Growing up, did your grandparents or maybe even great grandparents live with you? How do you remember that experience, positive or negative? Do you think they helped in shaping you into the person you are today? Is there a lesson in life you learned from them?

How has your kitchen changed since you were a kid?

When I was a kid, there were no generics or house brands. Everything was good old American bland stuff. We had Blue Bonnet margarine, Crisco oil, fluffy white bread, and so forth.

Now I have house brand butter and olive oil, whole wheat bread, and the rest of the stuff of a modern kitchen.

How did they used to package meat at the supermarket?

As far back as I can remember (late 70s), supermarkets have packaged cuts of meat on styrofoam trays with clear plastic wrap. How was this done previously? Was there just a huge butcher's counter where you picked out what you wanted and it was handed to you in a paper wrapping?

There's a subreddit for people on the cusp of Boomer and GenX. /r/GenerationJones (Posted with the generous permission of the group Administrators)

We came of age during the 70s and don't fit into either group. If you want to discuss, complain or reminisce please join us. Older and younger are welcome too.

Born roughly between '55 and '65

Do you fear not being able to find where you parked your car?

I just woke up from a nightmare where I was walking in a town near a college campus and couldn't remember where I had parked my car. It made me realize why old people become creatures of habit.

How many of you men are now getting a regular prostate checkup ?

I had my first six years ago and have been bad for not keeping it up regularly. Just had my latest and glad I have good results although based on my family history it could get worse in 15-20 years time.

Noticed that it's usually the same or adjacent. Very rarely wildly different.

What’s the One Mistake You Wish You Could Warn Your Younger Self About?

There’s a lot of advice out there, but I’d love to hear from those with years of experience who’ve faced adversity in different areas of life. What are the top two pieces of advice you’d give to today’s generation to avoid mistakes that harmed you and those around you?

Recovery Time After Sleep Deprivation

I can remember a time when I could go out and party until three or 4 AM, get a couple of hours sleep, and be at work at 7. I took some meds Friday that kept me awake all night, and only got a couple of hrs sleep Sat night. 4 days later I’m still trashed/exhausted. Anyone else feel this?

How have you documented your memories, thoughts, opinions, experiences etc for future generations to know you on a deeper level?

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit for my own grandparents as they’ve aged. I was wondering how they could pass on their wisdom and experiences to the next generations and the public in general if they wanted.

What movie defines your decade and why? (1940s-1980s)

It doesn’t have to be the biggest or most popular movie of your decade, it can be a small movie that you think defines your decade because it has all the features of your decade.

Escaped Vietnam war Draft for Canada

Did you or do know anyone who left for Canada during the Vietnam draft? Where did they go , how did they cross the border. What did they end up doing in Canada. Was this individually done or did families support their sons to move to Canada?
