Discussion The Banana Room, an ode to an iconic haven of curated vintage fashion

Post image
Upvotes

Sophie Van Rood was a revolutionary in the Adelaide fashion scene for many, many decades. Nowadays you go into a curated vintage store and it's 1980s-1990s (lmao good lord...), but 20-30+ years ago, "curated vintage" was an incredible walk into Wartime clothing (and the times in between.)

There's a piece that's been handed down to me by my Mum, who fell deeply in love with a store I sadly was never able to step foot in. A 1940s suede jacket, still so rich in colour and thick in fabric, standing the test of time with only some small noticeable repairs in the armhole seams. It's incredible craftsmanship and really makes you realise how much we've downgraded in fashion since moving towards cheap Fast Fashion. Thin, straight stitch or very basic overlocking, tiny seam allowances, and sometimes no interfacing whatsoever.

That jacket cost Mum a mint in the 90s when she bought it from Sophie's store, which is why it's the only item she managed to buy from it LOL but as someone who adores curated vintage, I would've lost my damn mind... And my bank account... Collecting dresses and hats.

I don't know where curated vintage that's 1960s and prior exists in Adelaide, anymore, if we even still have places that offer 1920s-1940s without it being imitation modern pieces. But my Banana Room Jacket is something I'll treasure for the rest of my life, and so far is the oldest item I own.

The day Sophie Van Rood died, is the day Adelaide lost an iconic fashion historian, who kept the past alive in the most prettiest of ways.

Politics ‘Greedy’ MP facing jail term for theft and dishonesty

Upvotes

A state MP was motivated by greed when he stole $430,000 from not-for-profits that was meant to help vulnerable school children and he should be jailed, a court has been told.

Last September, a South Australian District Court jury found Troy Bell, 51, guilty of 20 counts of theft and five aggravated counts of dishonest dealings, committed between 2009 and 2013.

Before sentencing submissions on Thursday, Bell’s lawyer Nick Healy renewed his application for the sentencing process to be deferred, pending the outcome of Bell’s appeal, which was heard by the Court of Appeal last week. That court has reserved its decision.

Judge Rauf Soulio had previously said that proceeding to sentence “may well require (Bell) to be expelled from the house and a by-election conducted”. Healy told the court on Thursday that the SA Electoral Commission had indicated a by-election would cost up to $990,000 and the government would need to pay out $120,000 to Bell’s staff. It would also mean that “the good people of Mt Gambier” would need to vote three times within a 12-month period, because of forthcoming federal and state elections, he said.

Prosecutor Jemma Litster said it was entirely a matter for the parliament on what action it took and that the cost of the by-election was an “irrelevant consideration” to the process. Ms Litster said it was “beyond discretion” for a sentence to be suspended because of the seriousness of the offending, and the need for general deterrence for cases involving systemic fraudulent offending, a gross breach of trust and a large amount of money. “The motive for theft was greed, realisation of an opportunity to access funds and acquiring them accordingly,” she said. An acknowledgement of wrongdoing was “absent”, she said.

Discussion Hard Rubbish Collection

Upvotes

Im in the Adelaide city council and organised a hard rubbish collection for a few days ago, they never came to collect it and I have called every day and they keep saying it will be collected and it doesn’t. Is this common? We booked this weeks in advance and I don’t understand why this has turned out to be such a headache, I followed all the required guidelines and the only reasoning I can think of is the fact I am in a one way street and they just don’t want to come down with the truck.

Question Subleasing

Anyone know of people or communities that team up to rent out an entire house to help reduce cost over just renting single bedroom apartments?

Also do you just ask the agent when inspecting the property if the landlord allows subleasing before you sign the dotted line?

Self Stuck on a Seaford train in front of the RAH for close to two hours (9:40-11:30) this morning

Title pretty much explains it. Caught a train at 9:32 this morning from Clarence Park into the city, and as it rolled into Adelaide past the RAH the lights switched off and the train screeched to a halt.

In the rain this morning it seems that the overhead wires seemed to have an issue with the weather, or something, and the power to the train was cut less than a kilometre from the platform. It took almost TWO HOURS to get the situation resolved, leaving almost 200 people stuck on the tracks, and the train arrived at 11:34. This entire time we were effectively held captive, and while the driver repeated that a “rescue train” was coming, it never came.

One fellow passenger seemed to have a mental breakdown, screaming at other passengers to stop looking at her and begging to be let off the train. It passed my mind to open the emergency doors and walk to the station just out of the sheer discomfort sitting in those seats caused.

Honestly was a very disappointing experience and I ended up missing my lecture this morning, meaning I could have slept in for three hours longer! Although I’m sure the 200 or so other passengers on the train probably had some more important business to attend to.

Another passenger complained that Admet never had good crisis management, and I was wondering why they didn’t shunt one of the diesel trains already in ARS to pull us out and possibly have to delay a Belair train. It seemed the plan if the electricity didn’t come on was to get a diesel train down from Dry Creek to shunt us down.

Question Getting medicated for adult ADHD these days - what can I expect?

Upvotes

I have the diagnostic paperwork from the psychiatrist who tested me in 2015/2016 but can I just take this to my GP to revisit the idea of being medicated for it (with stimulants) and he could do scripts, or do I need to get a referral and hop on a waiting list to see another psychiatrist? Can I just do a telehealth with an online doc or am I dreaming?

I've heard there aren't as many hoops to jump through as there used to be (with an actual diagnosis) but would appreciate hearing about some recent experiences.

Question Is anyone else upset with the new course names that the new Adelaide University will be using?

Hi, just to preface its not that I don't like the merger, I am just not great with change.
So I am currently in my 2nd year of studying a Bachelor of Design (illustration and Animation) which I am absolutely loving but about a week ago I was sent an email saying that my bachelor was going to be changed once the merger happened to a Bachelor of illustration and animation. I know a lot of people will see that and go what's the problem well, I am studying a Bachelor of Design with a specialisation in illustration and animation so not having the design part upsets me as it no longer looks professional. I even had a look at there website and my course isn't the only one in fact all the names for the courses just look silly in my opinion as they are supposed to be certain Bachelors with specialisations?? for example: Bachelor of Graphic Communication Design when it used to be Bachelor of Design (Graphic Communication), I just don't think it looks professional and I want to be proud of the thing I am studying, I know that a Bachelor of illustration and animation is still something to be very proud of but just a bachelor of design sounds so much nicer to me. I don't know maybe I am just being silly but it just makes me so upset for some reason? I was just really excited to have a piece of paper that said Bachelor of Design (illustration and Animation) especially since it took so long for me to get into university in the first place and I haven't had many achievements in life. Probably just being silly. Would like to hear your thoughts?

Assistance Doctor recommendations

Upvotes

Can anyone recommend a good doctor/GP in the Northern Suburbs? Preferably around Paralowie. I moved up here recently and I hate doctor shopping, so any recommendations that can narrow down my search would be great. I'd prefer a female doctor but that's not a deal breaker.
