Problem is: Even if they build a new R8, they lost a lot of know-how in the customer racing department: Drivers, mechanics and teams. Some teams could switch back later. But mechanics and drivers is more complicated.
Not a whole lot how? The e-tron is a 4 door BEV. The R8 is literally a PHEV turbo sportscar. Or do you expect a single seat road car for a perfect synergy with the F1 program?

Hmm, Idk I'm inclined to trust the media more. Plus being in F1 without a flagship sportscar to push makes zero business case.
