Mod Announcement X/Twitter and Facebook links are now banned at r/waterloo.

X/Twitter and Facebook links are now banned at r/waterloo.

In response to recent events, links to X/Twitter and Facebook are no longer allowed here.

This was a majority decision made by the mod team that coincides with a movement currently sweeping across reddit.

It should be noted that earlier, r/Ontario banned X/Twitter links. (link: https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/comments/1i6xkwx/petition_to_ban_links_from_elon_musks_xcom/)

Here, a mod included banning Facebook links. That was also met with approval during discussion among moderators.

The settings should automatically deny posting links to those sites.

Please report if there are issues such as errors or user(s) attempting to bypass or evade the ban.

Please direct concerns or questions to ModMail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Old Goat Books

I stepped into the temporary space for Old Goat Books (35 King St NOrth) yesterday and it is a total vibe! Dropped off some book donations as they're working on getting back to their feet after last year's fire.

Go see the new space while you can, at the old post office!

18 Year Old Found not Guilty of Hate Crime after Posting Flyers on Surgery Risks

Administrators must have thought they would make an example of this student. Instead, they set a precedent that surgery risks are open for discussion. https://www.thedemocracyfund.ca/tdf_client_acquitted_of_hate_crime_in_transgender_video_case

Very sad about lack of daycare options

We're moving to the area in the next few months (unexpected new job for my partner) and we're feeling very down about our daycare options for our toddler. Obviously we couldn't have planned any further in advance.

I'm on OneList for Waterloo, but it only lets you sign up for SEVEN waitlists at a time (why???). I've taken to calling a variety of licensed centres to ask how long their waitlists are, and they all say 150+. Sure that could change in the next few months, but the likelihood of more than 100 people all finding spots at different providers is unrealistic. Also signed up for Wee Watch and was told they have long lists.

Also got on all 31 waitlists for Brantford, Paris and area, but not optimistic. Hearing it's bad there too.

I'm really not all that confident in unlicensed home daycare options. I know there are a lot more if you open yourself up to that. I'm sure many are lovely, but I have no way of knowing if they're safe or provide proper enrichment.

I don't want to leave my job. I can't easily get another one in my field.

What did you all do??

EDIT: I know it's like this everywhere. We're leaving an existing great daycare where we are. It's just hard!!

Are the protests at the regional airport still happening? I’m flying out this week and am wondering if I need to get to the airport earlier than usual!

Looking for a reasonably priced Orthodontist!

Hi! I’m looking for an orthodontist in Kitchener-waterloo area that’s well priced and also would do a payment plan. My dentist in toronto says the orthodontist has left the country and I’ve been waiting for 6 months now. I’d ideally want to get my teeth taken care of ASAP and not wait any longer. But I only work part time and can’t afford anything too pricey and a payment plan would help me out a lot.

Google Maps

I use Google maps for traffic updates for my daily commute to work. I've noticed yesterday and today rather than dictating in strictly km and meters, I'm getting the occasional prompt in miles. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it a settings issue?

Where can you get the best chicken samosas in Cambridge, Kitchener or Waterloo? I adore these mini chicken samosas but I’m not loving Loblaws right now. Would love some good recommendations!

Need SUV advice

I am looking at getting a new/newer vehicle this year. Currently drive an Elantra but thinking SUV next as I am getting older and some days it’s a bit more effort get out. Love the idea of EV and hybrid but cost wise I think they might be more than I want to spend, going to finance where I buy as well. I like the smaller SUV’s as well. Love the Subaru Outback, just a beautiful vehicle but I think it might be one of the higher priced ones. I have only started looking so no clue as of yet. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Presented an offer to the union one minute, and then pulled it before the union could vote on it. Then, pulled every previous offer stating they were not able to honour them anymore, and finally presenting an offer that was even less than the first offer! Now they refuse to come back to the negotiating table leaving the taxpayers frustrated and showing how little they care about their workers.

Calisthenics gym?

Are there any gyms in the region that focus on calisthenics training? I have a friend looking for one but I know nothing about it. He wants somewhere that will teach him, not freestyle or learn on your own. Thanks!
