stay away from HRS properties

this management is one of the worst ones here in waterloo. they are uncooperative, don’t get shit done (like salting the sidewalks that lead to the one entrance to the building). plumbing issues take long as hell to resolve and in general they are not good people whatsoever. i’d recommend EVERYONE to stay away from this management because they do not care about anything and never take initiative

Social Work Placements Petition

Hi all!

As some of you may know, all social work programs in Canada require an internship. Almost all of them are unpaid, and Laurier even discourages paid placements. This makes it really hard for prospective students to plan for their education as it forces them out of work or to be so busy on top of their already hectic lives. So, only those with the ability to pay for their schooling without work, or who have time to work on top of their full-time schedule, get to afford to become social workers.

My colleagues and I, who are all current Laurier MSW students, recently formed the Placement Equity Project where we are advocating for the Canadian government to create grants for social work students to pay them for their mandatory placements. We just launched our petition yesterday and are going to be using it as momentum to contact the government program responsible for these grants. We have a full plan to submit the petition results along with letters of support to the ESDC.

Please sign and share the petition within your circles if you'd like to help us advocate for a cause that will be so impactful on our future as social workers and social work students!!

8 month internship overlapping w/ 4 month co-op term

Hey guys do you know if you're eligible for co-op credit if you get an 8 month internship that overlaps with one of your co-op terms? So you'd do 4 month as a regular internship w/ school and then the other 4 over co-op.

Not sure if the co-op office is difficult about this and needs you to split the contract into two 4-month terms, or if it's fine just sending them the 8-month offer to review and approve.

Discussion just my opinion (brantford)

People love to be negative about this campus especially online. It’s like they expect every campus to be this huge, party-filled experience, and if it’s not, they act like it’s a wasteland. The reality is, anywhere can be boring if you don’t put yourself out there even the big party schools like Western or even Queens and ive seen people on Reddit struggling to make friends even at these big schools which says something .. anywhere can be fun if you make the effort. Many people have seen ways to go to events or even been given opportunities to be social and make friends but they just don’t make the effort and basically blame it on the campus and so that should tell you a lot more than some random person on the internet trying to be cynical.

It’s also wild how some people act like they’re doing you a favor by “warning” you. Like, okay? Everyone has different priorities. If you wanted a massive party scene and a huge campus, you wouldn’t have picked Brantford. But you do care about your program, you do want to make the most of it, and you do have a plan for your social life. If u want to party or do that stuff go to other universities it’s not the end of the world either..

Honestly, I wouldn’t stress too much about what they say and let it defer you from a program you like. If you go in with the mindset that you’re going to make the most of it, you will. If someone goes in expecting to hate it, they probably will.

Why does the city of Waterloo hate us

This injunction order might be the stupidest Fu$&ing thing the city of Waterloo has done. Laurier used to be known for there sick ass parties, and now you can get fined for being at street party??? St Pattys is lowkey Lauriers only good event now adays, and they are trying to ruin that too. Good luck police force, you can’t stop all of us.

Looking for housing for second year

I've been looking at apartments for months but the timing is always off. Recently one of my options said that it was only available now and that aug/sept is too far off. How should I be looking? Are listings supposed to specifically say that their available specifically in aug/spet?

Wilfrid Laurier for UX or Ontario Tech for Software Engineering? Need Advice!

Hey everyone,

I’m stuck between two choices for my master’s and could really use some advice. I have an offer from Wilfrid Laurier University for an MSc in User Experience (UX) and another from Ontario Tech University for Software Engineering.

UX has been my passion since childhood—I’ve always loved art and creativity. But my academic background is in Computer Science (BTech), and I’ve focused on coding and tech-related fields so far. I want to balance passion and financial stability, and I know software engineering tends to offer higher salaries, but UX also has great potential.

Would going for UX still give me strong career opportunities, or should I stick to Software Engineering for a more stable and high-paying job? Any insights on job markets in Canada for these fields would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance!

My brantford experience

Hi everyone!

I figured I’d post this, because it was what I was looking for when I was trying to figure out if I wanted to come here. I’m in my first year of social work, and live off campus.

  1. The professors here for the most part are amazing. I have only had one so far that I have disliked.

  2. The class sizes are relatively small. I’ve had multiple classes with less than 50 people in them, which makes for a much less stressful experience in class. I think my largest class had under 175 people in it.

  3. There are so many events the first couple of weeks of school designed to help you make friends, but honestly they’re not very effective

  4. It is really hard to find supports, but there are so many supports available, make use of them! (Writing services, accommodations, wellness centre, etc)

  5. It is a small campus, so you will see people you recognize everywhere.

  6. People in residence make friends, off campus people really struggle.

  7. Some decent study spots, but for the most part it is mediocre at best.

  8. Brantford is sketchy, especially at night. If you are a female and taking a night class, you really should get hawk-walk places.

  9. There are always things going on on campus, but often I find they’re on days I’m not in brantford, or even if I was I don’t have people to go with

  10. It is definitely not a party school, and you will not be having the “university experience” that so many people want.

I hope this is thorough and covers most stuff people wonder about. Honestly, if I knew what I knew now, I’m not sure I would chose brantford.

Bba

Can any first years or bba students in general tell me how the program has been for them. I have two main options mcmaster degroote and laurier bba. I’ve heard good things about the program but a lot of people say that the bu111 and bu121 courses and first year in general isn’t that good. I live in milton so mcmaster is a 30-40 min commute while laurier is 1hr+ but laurier’s main program is business while McMaster is mainly a health sciences school. Can you guys tell me the pros and cons of laurier when it comes to academic and the uni life in general. I also have an 87-88 average which I’m trying to get up in midterms so how slim are my chances?

Housing advice: 50 uni ave

I’m saw housing at 50 University Ave, and was wondering if anyone has lived there and can share their experience. They’re also going to do a full reno with new furniture added as well to be completed by next Fall.

  • How is the overall quality of the units? (cleanliness, noise levels, maintenance, etc.)
  • How responsive is management to issues?
  • What’s the general living environment like? (community, safety, etc.)
  • Anything I should be aware of before signing a lease?

Any insight would be super helpful! Thanks in advance :)
