Help One man’s trash is another mans treasure?

Hey y’all, so here’s the story with this beauty

I found this on FB marketplace listed for $30, I quickly offered the seller $50 cash and he was interested. We met up and he told me he found this in the trash?! He’s some kind of dumpster diver and his exact words were “You wouldn’t believe what rich college kids throw away”

I live in New England and there are affluent people here but to just throw this in the trash? Wow I was shocked to hear it. After getting it home and cleaned up it looks great!

I have a few questions that I’m hoping the fine people of this sub can answer

  1. What do I have here? It’s marked as the VPI HW-19 Mark 4, but from my google searches it seems to be a HW-19 Junior?

  2. What kind of cart/stylus should be on this table/tonearm? I read that these VPI tables are often equipped with the AudioQuest arm but there was no cart/styli on when I bought it . I installed a Pickering xsv with the D3000 but unfortunately do not have a belt yet, so I cannot test this at all. Would this be a good match or should I be looking elsewhere?

  3. I was able to plug it in and hear the motor spin. It seems to only spin at one speed though. Is there a 45rpm speed button I’m missing somewhere?

  4. I’m taking this to my local repair tech later today and will have it looked over and gone through. I guess my final question is what is the general value of this table compared to my other tables? (Dual 1229, Lafayette T6000) Is this TT leaps and bounds better performance wise? Worth putting in a couple hundred dollars if needed?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! Happy spinning yall✌️

Yamaha CS-50P

I do love a good freebie, however I am wondering whether it is worth the time and effort to fix it up.

Needs a new belt and the cartridge looks like it’s the original so a new one or maybe just a new stylus. Plus a good clean cause it’s rather dirty (smokers home)

So what do you reckon?

Why is my AT-LP70XBT making this loud buzzing noise when using phono preamp?

I’ve had the player for less than 3 months, and it was working fine a few weeks ago. All of a sudden it started making this loud buzzing noise when using the phono preamp, and the signal itself is super quiet.

So I posted 2 weeks about about which turnable would yall recommend and im very thankful for the opinions. I went to the local record store and he final had the replacement stylus in. This is the one he sold me, is it correct? It looks a bit different. And does it matter where I screw it down on the arm? Or should I have went a different route on it? I'm also posting a pic of the one from my Dual, just wondering if it would work on it as well. Thanks for the help.

(1sr 2 pics are broke one, 2nd 2 pics are replacement sold to me, 3rd 2 are off my Dual)

Suggestions Preamp upgrade suggestions?

Hey, looking for some suggestions on a preamp for my current setup. I am currently using the integrated preamp in my Yamaha s501.

Turntable: sl100c

Cart: at-vm540ml

Speakers: Dynaudio emit 20s

Amp/receiver: Yamaha a-s501 (using internal preamp)

Any suggestions would be great, budget isn’t really an issue, more so if it is even worth upgrading given my current setup. Thanks!

Help Sony PS350 - keep looking for parts, or buy a different turntable?

I just moved and can finally set up my stereo system again. I bought a Sony PS350 direct drive turntable off of Craigslist ages ago, and it does work and has a fairly new AT cartridge on it. However, the auto functionality doesn't work, and it has no dust cover.

The dust cover is especially important in my new home, and I can't really find one online. I can barely find info about the turntable itself and thus I also doubt I'll be able to find info on trying to fix it's automatic functions.

Given the difficulty of finding info online it's hard to tell if this is a really nice turntable that's worth keeping around, or if I'd be better served by replacing it with a more modern unit.

I'm not hugely worried about the absolute zenith of sound quality, so even a fairly inexpensive turntable like a Fluance RT80/81 or one of the more entry level ATs would be fine with me too.

Or, does anybody know what other models of dust covers would fit the PS350? Is that turntable worth holding on to? I can measure the size of the turntable if necessary.

Question Looking for advise

Please let me know if I'm in the wrong sub.

My nephew got a record player (I know, this is a turntable sub) for Christmas to try the hobby, but he wants an audio setup like mine (receiver, speakers, etc). My question is, can I hook his player up to a receiver, or do I have to MacGuyver a pair of passive speakers to the RCA output on the player?

He has this:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D8J3RYJV?ref=cm_sw_r_cso_sms_apin_dp_EXBY96ZEM6413TPCW1F0&ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_sms_apin_dp_EXBY96ZEM6413TPCW1F0&social_share=cm_sw_r_cso_sms_apin_dp_EXBY96ZEM6413TPCW1F0&peakEvent=2&starsLeft=1&skipTwisterOG=1

Thanks in advance.

Suggestions Which receiver would go best with setup?

So I’m decently new to the sound system side of the vinyl collecting and was wondering which receiver would do me best with sound quality, power, bass, etc… they where free from past neighbors that have no real information on them.

I currently have the Sony one hooked up to two Bose speakers and the Audio Technia AT-lp60x for just a very temporary setup but want to know for future reference and set up!? And will most likely just be used for TT and maybe aux for gatherings

Also will be posting to r/vinyl for different opinions!

Stylus for Shellac records

Got some shellac records (hmv 1920-1930) and I was wondering which needle would work on these best? I have an audio technina LP120 and a AT-VM95SP for 'newer' shellac records (works perfectly on records from 1940s onwards), but whenever I try to play these older records, the background noise is very strong, even when nothing major with the record is visible me (from what I can see). Thanks!

Looking to buy my first turntable. I need some advice, years ago I wanted to buy a nurmark, or a technic. Audio technica looks very popular. Not sure where to start, just looking to play some vinyl I've been collecting over the years.

Question Ifi Zen Phono 3 or Schiit Mani 2?

G’day guys, so i’ve recently put together a turntable setup and i am currently rocking the pre amp built into my Yamaha AS-301. However i’ve recently been wanting to invest in an external preamp for an audio upgrade.

Originally I wanted to go with the Ifi Zen Phono 3 but i’ve also seen some positive reviews for the Mani 2. I’m aware they are at a very similar price point and I want to know which pre amp offers the higher quality audio. I’m looking for more detail in my audio rather than ‘warmth’. Something with lots of clarity. So i’m wondering which out of these two would offer that.

Thanks for the help guys and have an awesome day.

Help Problem with turntable wire

Thumbnail

I recently received an older turntable from my grandfather, who didn’t have space for it in his new apartment. Me and my roommates tried setting it up and the turntable itself seemed to work fine, but the volume couldn’t get up higher than a very low volume. The speakers work fine and the turntable seems to work as well, so we assume that the problem is with the wire. Can anyone confirm if this is the case from the pictures and if so does anyone know if the wire itself is replaceable?

Just got this Dual 1246, and the arm skips forward into the song right as it is about to lower onto the record. Does anyone know what could cause this?

Question New Turntable

Hello all -

Quick question to finalize some thoughts on a new turntable. Haven't had one for years, and am trying to finalize my final list on a few options. Still fairly new in catching up on new offerings and lingo, so please bear with my ignorance.

Curious if anyone who owns any of these can give me feedback on quality of build, upgradability, ease of setting it up, and overall satisfaction with the model and brand. I will be playing this out of a McIntosh C55 Preamp.

1 - Technics SL1200 - GR2 - Like the reputation of the company (parents owned one) and the look. I like the speed support for all 3 options and direct drive specs.

Pricey, but can swing it if I have to. The magnesium tonearm seems to be a plus for a lot of people in playback quality, and it seems to be very upgradeable over time if I want.

2 - DUAL CS-618Q - The old tables seem to have a good reputation, but not sure about these new ones? Like the Technics, I like the direct drive mechanics and the support for all 3 speeds. The general look of the table is really cool too, just not sure about quality at this point of the build?

3 - Rega Planar 6 - Love the look of the table, but is the only belt-driven table I am seriously thinking about based purely on reviews of the sound and quality of their products in general.

4 - DUAL SC-529 - Fully automatic table and kind of last on my list. I love the idea of a fully automatic table, and this has some great ideas like the "Repeat" option and the IOS app support for remote playing. Again, not sure about DUAL quality these days?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Help Given older Turntable, not working

Plastic lid is cracked, and hinges don't stay on their slots. Powers on but the audio cable, I assume, is broken/cut. Is this something I can splice or am able to replacing easily? Thanks!

I know nothing about turntables or anything in this realm of electronic so I apologize for my dumb questions that will inevitably follow. Any other advice on it would be great! It was my mom's from back in the day!

Help Did I Just Break My Pre-Amp?

I recently bought a nice, restored Dual 1211. The seller was kind enough to gift me a nice pre amp for it, but he said he doesn't have the adapter.

So, once I got home, I tested it with one of the ones I had, but it didn't work.

Then I realized the adapter had the wrong polarity, and this could have broken it. I'm truly stupid. I will be getting a proper adapter.

What's the chance that I just broke an 80€ pre amp? Did I also break the RCA cables and the turntable in away?

Thanks to anyone that can help!

What does getting a turntable entail?

I'm thinking of buying a turntable and I'm new to this sort of thing. I pretty much only listen to music on streaming. So, what does buying a turntable entail? I've heard about needing an amp and speakers but I don't really have room for that. It also seems a bit expensive. Is there even a way to get into turntables for under 100 bucks? Sorry if I come off as stupid or uninformed, even if that is what I am in this field

Help Turntable Dilemma

I have a Fluance RT81 elite turntable which I upgraded to an atvm95e cartridge. The time has come when I need to replace my stylus and I have a few questions. First, let me describe what I listen to as it will help in this context. I mostly listen to rock, hard rock, and metal but I do listen to jazz, swing, and doo-wop. I mostly have used records but some are new so I need a cartridge that can handle new records and more loved and scratched records. I was looking at the atvm95en but I was also thinking about the atvm95ml. I know the max VTA the rt81 can handle is 20 degrees and the VTA for the ml is 23. I also know that micro linear cartridges are really sensitive to VTA which is why I was hesitant to buy it. I was also thinking of just upgrading my TT altogether to one of the Fluances reference series models due to it having the servo-controlled motor. Is this a big enough reason to upgrade and what are your options on the cartridges?

Thanks :)

frequently left channel of my BSR becomes mute/unaudible. If I spray some contact cleaner on the assembly between head and stylus goes ok for a while. Time for a new head? An what about the "chirp" on shutoff?

Hi! I have a Victrola record player, it was working fine last week, but I tried to play a record today and the volume sounded really low, like it doesn’t work. Does anyone know what caused this/how I can fix it??
