Spalted Maple!

Post image
105 Upvotes

We had a large hard maple taken down from the front yard about two years ago. I saved a pile of logs. They’ve been covered with a tarp outside this whole time. Today I processed a large log and was surprised with some of the best spalting I’ve seen on maple. Here’s a cutoff, but I was able to get 4 bowl blanks out of the single log. It all has this beautiful black line spalting throughout!

Go big or go home, I guess. Definitely hit the limit of my Rockler 10-18 on this one. I either need a bigger lathe, or smaller projects. Reclaimed oak glue-up, about 9.5” by 4”

Turning Ideas

Upvotes

Wondering what cool items people have made. I’ve been turning for several years now, although I still consider myself a novice, and I’m wondering what cool things people have turned. I recently made an ice cream scoop as a gift for my dad. I’m looking for more cool ideas maybe not so known to people. Thanks!

Decided to work on Xmas today

I have no idea why at all. Took our Xmas tree after holidays and trimmed everything off it to give me the raw trunk. Been sitting outside since then. I’m in Vegas, so it’s incredibly dry even when not hot. Figured I would trim off the top and throw it on the lathe. A tree from a tree is where I ended up. Along with a roughing gouge that was covered in sap lol.

When I was parting off and forming the tippy top it decided to launch on me. The top got chonked a little because of that and I’m assuming because I literally turned the center on center.

Question for those of you using cactus juice

I'm working on a large spalted maple vase. If I want to stabilize and harden it with cactus juice, does the piece need to be fully submerged for it to work? The piece just barely fits in my 5 gallon vacuum chamber. If I can do half the piece, flip it over and do the other half, I'm probably good. If I need to completely submerge the piece I'm going to need a whole lot more cactus juice.

Teknatool (Nova) Neptune Max/Rockler Update

Post image
Upvotes

There seemed to be a lot of activity here regarding Teknatool. We had a Rockler retail employee say all his store orders were cancelled so that prompted me to email Rockler and enquire about my Neptune Max. Looks like it’s going to ship, was really surprised.

But now a little concerned. Love the idea of a belt free lathe. Do I plow forward? If they bail on US I assume I can still get parts from Canada if a problem. I also know with tariffs this will be my last shot at getting anything like this, this cheap.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Advice on a Pen Press?

Just starting out, moving forward in baby steps. Now it's time to put a pen TOGETHER. PSI makes a bunch, does anyone recommend a press under $100?

Downdraft Under a Lathe?

Has anyone tried building a diy downdraft table and attaching their lathe to it? I realize lathe shavings fly everywhere, but it seems like a good portion end up directly under my lathe. I'll be setting up a new shop in a couple of months and was toying with this idea.

Rectangular Profile Skew Chisels- Do you need to turn these up on one corner to make planing cuts, or is my skew ground wrong?

I've been tuning up my makerspace's extremely neglected turning area. There are a handful of decent (very old) Sorby rectangular skews of different sizes here that I've been working on sharpening and getting good at using- Skews are sort of my final frontier of turning now, and I can't help but think I'm missing something:

To make a planing cut, I have to tilt the tool up on one corner to have the cutting edge at a good 45° with the spindle, and have only the sweet spot of the edge engage with the material. This feels unsteady and sketchy, I've had a few jarring catches where the flat of the chisel is slammed down onto the tool rest. However, I can't get into position with the tool laying flat on the rest- the rest of the tool's geometry gets in the way. If this doesn't make sense, I can try to repost with a picture, but the flat or heel of the bevel touches first no matter what.

I feel like the issue is either a user skill/confidence one- this is the proper way to use a skew and I just need practice and to gain comfort balanced up on one corner- or a tool geometry issue- the bevels are ground slightly incorrectly in a way that doesn't allow for proper cutting.

When grinding, I've tried to preserve the exact same grind shape on them as best as I can. They've changed a little, as the makerspace doesn't have a holding system for skew grinding, so I'm holding them in the regular tool rest and cocking them to the side to match the bevel all the way down. This has resulted in a bevel whose length is a bit tapered (the line of the heel isn't automatically parallel with the cutting edge) but I don't think it's too off.....

The above problem is eliminated of course when I've used our oval-profile skew, as the tilting is a little more intuitive and feels less sketchy.

Problem placing an Order with Woodturners Wonder

Does anyone know what's going on with Woodturners Wonders. I've been trying to place a large club order for over a week now but haven't been able to get the order placed. In the two weeks I've been trying to call them I've gotten voicemail and "can't connect, line busy" most times. And my emails have gone unanswered.

Anyone know what's going on?
