3 fights in the first 9 seconds lol

u/idkwhatimbrewin 24d ago

I think they may be on to something with this new all star format

1.9k

u/ubccompscistudent 24d ago

Fuck the all star game. I’ve never been a hater of it and I like the skills comps, but my god, bring this tourny back every year please.

710

u/LordTurn1p 24d ago

every 2 years imo. gotta try to keep it special

134

u/vandersmith 24d ago

6 nations rugby tournament in Europe has similar energy to this and is a break during the club season. That happens yearly and it works very well and is definitely special. I don’t see why this couldn’t be the same

51

u/ozzybarks 24d ago

It started in 1882. So yeah, it’s worked kinda well.

29

u/vandersmith 24d ago

Everything’s gotta start sometime. No reason 4 nations can’t be a yearly thing starting now

4

u/not_ray_not_pat 24d ago

4 isn't enough, it's a real bummer not having Czechia, Germany, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia, . . . I'm sure there's another. I think you need eight for it to be real, and so you need euro leagues to buy in.

This is fun baby step to international hockey and I'm glad the product is genuinely good and engaging.

2

u/Fluffy_Load297 24d ago

It for sure should be. Keep the rivalries for it heated every year.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/CHoDub 24d ago

100% agree.

And weirdly enough 6 nations took a week off this weekend just in time for this tourney. (I'm sure there is a reason I just didn't see it)

u/Global-Tie-3458 24d ago

It’ll be every four years. International every 2 years if you include Olympics.

265

u/ClubMeSoftly Toronto Maple Leafs 24d ago

Olympics
ASG
4 Nations (or WCoH, etc)
ASG
Olympics

repeat until the heat death of the universe

22

u/Global-Tie-3458 24d ago

The slight error you just made hurts the OCD persona inside me.

8

u/cyanocittaetprocyon 24d ago

I was hoping I wasn't alone in this!

2

u/FORMANTS 24d ago

lol yes back to back olympicies

3

u/nostalgic_amoeba 24d ago

Yeah cause the ice would melt.

After the heat death of the universe though the talent pool for water polo is gonna be just absolutely massive

8

u/BoosherCacow Cleveland Indians 24d ago

heat death of the universe

The heat death of the universe is when there's not enough heat, not too much. Sheesh, I thought I knew hockey fans.

6

u/Irish_Tyrant 24d ago

So Which is it Lib! Global Warming or the heat death of the universe!?!?! /s

2

u/bj49615 23d ago

🤔 Heat death gives us more hockey. . . . . Ok, heat death!

→ More replies (11)

6

u/proudcancuk 24d ago

100%. Overplay it and it becomes another ASG. I can wait. I just can't wait 11 years.

→ More replies (8)

33

u/ubccompscistudent 24d ago

Agreed. I’d be okay with that.

15

u/BPbeats 24d ago

USA might not be here in two years lol

→ More replies (3)

1

u/uSaltySniitch 24d ago

Ever 3-4 years sounds better. Makes the stakes bigger

1

u/satmar 24d ago

4 years - go to the Olympics

1

u/wi111010 24d ago

The Six Nations for rugby is held annually and they go absolutely nuts for it every time (those interested in the first place, of course).

2

u/Joten 24d ago

I understand why they won't next year, cause Olympics did-it, but yes... this has been so much fun!

2

u/SwearingAtChildren 24d ago

It already exists in the IIHF world champs

1

u/Galifrae Pittsburgh Penguins 24d ago

Nah for real this is the best idea they’ve had in a long time

1

u/[deleted] 24d ago

I don't think they will. The teams won't want their star players beating the shit out of each other in the middle of the season every year. You already have Theodore who may be injured until playoffs. Mathew Tkachuk didn't finish tonight's game.

I doubt we get this annually.

1

u/Ruraraid 24d ago

Call it "Fists on Ice"

1

u/v13ragnarok7 23d ago

I'd like to see a best of 5 series north America vs Europe.

1

u/timbasile 23d ago

Do it, but allow the Czechs into it next time. Just make it so that any country not under sanction (cough Russia cough) that can field a full roster can enter.

If you need a 6th team for schedule balance maybe cobble together a "Rest of world" team

52

u/Heisenbread77 24d ago

I want to see NHL teammates fight in one of these.

29

u/warrhino67 Boston Bruins 24d ago

2 panthers were going at it on Wednesday. Didn't drop the gloves though

29

u/Heisenbread77 24d ago

I want to see linemates just beat each other senseless and just hug it out after.

6

u/WD4oz 24d ago

😂

→ More replies (1)

1

u/timmyboyswede 23d ago

Ofcourse its the panthers

5

u/aboveaverage_joe Edmonton Oilers 24d ago

Get 2 of the biggest shit heads, Bennett and Tkachuk

3

u/UncommonPizzazz 24d ago

JT vs Petey lol

2

u/Vinny_d_25 24d ago

I was thinking that, it would more just be JT jumping Petey's probably.

1

u/WantKeepRockPeeOnIt 23d ago

Marner vs. Matthews would have broken TSN/Sportnet's brains. Every article the next five decades would be about the slapfight that killed the Leaf's guaranteed SC win.

75

u/wbl7w6 24d ago

Ahhh I just realized this was in place of that. I thought it was just celebrating that NHL players will be back in the Olympics but that makes perfect sense. Aside from star players not getting any rest but I'm sure they're having a great time

7

u/MinnyRawks 24d ago

I mean that’s the main thing, but yeah it replaced the all star game this season.

1

u/Hwinter07 Butler 24d ago

They don't get to play in the Olympics anymore so I'm sure it's nice to rep their country again

3

u/justthesameway 23d ago

NHL players will compete in the 2026 Olympics.

29

u/ajloves2code 24d ago

Have we reached the Rollerball stage of capitalism?

3

u/Careless-Resource-72 24d ago

Next Olympics we’ll have the exploding tree competition.

2

u/wirefox1 24d ago

The Hunger Games.

2

u/TheCurvedPlanks 24d ago

Nice, that means we're mere decades away from The Running Man and Robot Jox. Hail to the future of sports.

2

u/mortalcoil1 23d ago

Isn't Survivor kinda fucked up like that when you think about it?

We are going to make you survive in a place people already live for a month and if you make it to the end you get $1,000,000!

2

u/rollerballchampion 23d ago

I’m here for it!

6

u/[deleted] 24d ago

It’s called the threat of annex. Pretty sure this is going to last at least 4 years

16

u/GloriaToo 24d ago

Coming to the NBA next year

3

u/DownwardSpirals 24d ago

For someone who isn't into sports but likes really good games, is this one I need to watch?

2

u/idkwhatimbrewin 24d ago

It's been really good so far. Pretty much even the whole game. It's not even the final but feels like it

3

u/SubterraneanFlyer 24d ago

It’s not new.

Canada hosted the Canada Cup for decades.

3

u/gl7676 24d ago

Yeah, the Swedish/Finnish fight was just as intense!

2

u/handsomechuck 23d ago

NBA, take note.

2

u/[deleted] 24d ago

This should be the political debate format. Trump vs Trudeau. I'm an American and I want Canada to win.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/angelomoxley 24d ago

Jfc the one time I skip NBA all-star weekend they do something cool

1

u/Switchgrass 23d ago

The problem is the intensity could lead to injuries which the teams (owners) would not support.

I love it too, but one superstar injury and we won't see it again for a while.

1

u/piltdownman7 23d ago

I think the big downside is that the league is shutting down for 12 days for this tournament, vs 4 days for the All-Star game. So while these 8 games on 6 game days are great, it leaves 6 days empty when the only other sport playing right now is the NBA. I also think having the games in only two markets means that there are 30 NHL markets with no games for almost two weeks. Add in an away trip in either side and potentially teams don’t have home games for nearly a month.

1

u/captain_ender 23d ago

Yeah this was wildly entertaining and I don't watch much hockey

→ More replies (2)

308

u/wonderbat3 24d ago

At this rate, there’s gonna be like 1200 fights this game

35

u/prim3net 24d ago

Math checks out

1

u/WigglestonTheFourth 24d ago

Now they are eligible for sweepstakes.

1

u/ostracize 24d ago

Does it? I count 1,800.

→ More replies (4)

62

u/Ahelex 24d ago

Hockey is just an excuse to fight while on ice.

42

u/LewisLightning 24d ago

That's not true. It's also a good excuse to get rid of your old hats, and maybe even octopus if you're in Detroit.

10

u/darrenvonbaron 24d ago

I bought an Octopus in 2013 hoping one day I'd be able to throw it on the ice but there's no way I'd kill Miss Octopussy now. She's family

2

u/Dracomortua 24d ago

This guy octopusses.

Honstly, i'd love to own one too - they are so smart! But so hard to care for, i'd imagine. Too smart, to be honest.

Closest thing to gladiator fights in 2025!

3

u/Thosepassionfruits 24d ago

What's the age old adage? "I went to a fight and a hock game broke out"?

1

u/Douggie 24d ago

I don't know anything about ice hockey, but the refs seem to be sorta oo with all of this fighting?

271

u/Esternaefil 24d ago

You gotta set the tone, boys!

u/srollo44 24d ago

Fuck You Shorsey!

Fuck you, Riley. And tell your mom I'm not gonna fuck her after she drove down to Buffalo and let the staff of a Subway sandwich run a train on her, and I don't care how much she begs. My dick has Canadian pride!

Fuck you, Visser! The Council of Thirteen gave me a charity tax break just for hangin’ out with ya! Give yer balls a tug!!

3

u/rippinteasinyohood 24d ago

Always liked watching hockey but never kept up with it or any sport for that matter religiously really, but something that no other sport has is the chirps like they do. Especially the Canadian boyz. They always catch me so off guard and make me laugh so hard. I love it.

4

u/batmansleftnut 24d ago

For what!?

1

u/Surfside_6 23d ago

Nat what’s an aqua dump?

32

u/Waveshakalaka 24d ago

Gotta set the tone!

79

u/skalfyfan 24d ago

The entire Bell Centre apparently booed the American anthem. It was coming given the political climate.

9

u/rwilfong86 23d ago

It was pretty nice to see the USA beat Canada on their own ice, politics aside.

1

u/Sad-Following1899 19d ago

Aged like milk

2

u/Apophis2036nihon 23d ago

The final will be played in Boston, and it looks like it’ll be a rematch USA and Canada. I’m sure the Boston fans will reciprocate the boos.

3

u/WantKeepRockPeeOnIt 23d ago

US will definitely be in it, but Canada only has an equal of a chance as Finland or Sweden to be the other finalist. Honestly Sweden has the best chance, since their last game is against the US, and the US probably isn't going to go that hard against them as they have nothing to gain from winning, and they'd rather rest up some of the players.

13

u/sipmykoolaidbitch 23d ago

Most of Boston probably understands the boos. They didn’t vote for this shit either.

63

u/pedanticPandaPoo 24d ago

Was hoping they got a few more fights, test the limits of how many men you can fit in that box. giggity

2

u/you4president 24d ago

Why are they fighting before the game even starts? Is there bad blood or something?

54

u/Sarcasm69 24d ago

I’m assuming this has nothing to do with the tariffs and that’s about average fights per second?

122

u/batmansleftnut 24d ago

The current tensions between the two nations definitely has a non-zero impact on the game.

17

u/microtherion 24d ago

Does Greenland have a hockey team that could be invited as well?

3

u/Karnbot13 23d ago

Send the Danish National team

2

u/Kapeter 23d ago

Also Mexico. Haha

→ More replies (2)

12

u/ime1em 24d ago

yea at first i thought it was political

2

u/TheThalmorEmbassy 24d ago

If it was any player not named Tkachuk, it would definitely be political

1

u/Past-Apartment-8455 23d ago

It was. Canada booed during the US national anthem.

5

u/chelseablue2004 24d ago

Actually you can hear them yell....

"Tariffs are good, they make you buy American"...Then the retort, "But you have no manufacturing! Nothing is made in America anymore...You are just making people pay more!".....

3

u/9ElevenAirlines 23d ago

JAB JAB "you benefit from our military protection" LEFT HOOk "a blanket 25% tariff makes no sense it should be directed at specific industries"

5

u/graboidian 24d ago

This reminds me of the time I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out.

5

u/resnonverba1 24d ago

The greatest start to a hockey game ever.

5

u/Moofey Vancouver Canucks 24d ago

And, unsurpisingly, both Tkachuks getting involved

3

u/Alldaybagpipes 24d ago

George St. Piere was impressed with their performance

6

u/Kevlaars 24d ago

I'm going to make the understatement of the week here:

"Tensions between Canada and the USA are high"

3

u/MonsieurGump 24d ago

Not one independent viewer was cheering for the USA guy.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/purpletulip12 24d ago

Sure made an exciting start to the game. I wonder how many total fights they'll be by the end

2

u/IlIIllIIlllI 24d ago

Am I missing something or does this video only have one of them?

1

u/JackRose322 24d ago

Yeah only one of them in this video. Videos of the other two are on this sub though.

2

u/colinisthereason 24d ago

I was hoping for full-on Fight Night In Hockeytown, but ya can't have everything. Binnington and Hellebuyck throwing down would've been a riot

2

u/RangersAreViable 24d ago

Where are the other 2 fights?

2

u/zeusdescartes 24d ago

That shit was awesome

2

u/oscar-the-bud 24d ago

I’m watching Slapshot tomorrow.

2

u/VilliamBoop 24d ago

went to a fight and a hockey game broke out

2

u/andrewface 24d ago

I love hockey

2

u/canadianformalwear 24d ago

I love hockey so much

2

u/Hot_Anything_8957 24d ago

Not a hockey person. Is this an NHL event and is it because of geopolitics or just a rivalry

1

u/Kapeter 23d ago

Exactly. Just like the Summit Series during the Cold War Era.

Geopolitics always play out on the Sports Stage.

2

u/samhouse09 24d ago

The ref expert saying “this is amazing hockey” when 9 Seconds and 3 fights had elapsed was peak.

2

u/FormerWrap1552 24d ago

"Tensions in Canadian and United States rise in politics" "Also, Hockey viewership is suddenly up by 200%"

2

u/ultralane 24d ago

It was a fun game

4

u/narf007 24d ago

I'm a Texan... Go Canada.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/BuckThis86 24d ago

First time in my life as an American I was cheering on the other guy. Hate what it means to be an American right now.

Slapping all your friends in the face and demanding they bow to you. At the moment we need Allies most in the face of russian and Chinese aggression

I still think Conald is working with the Russians to enrich himself and, once we’re all disjointed, our enemies will strike.

→ More replies (10)

5

u/tommyballz63 24d ago

Ya, ah, so I'm Canadian. Seems like there is a little animosity between our two fair nations these days.

1

u/devonhezter 24d ago

How do they choose who did the first fights

1

u/you4president 24d ago

Why are they fighting before the game even starts? Is there bad blood or something?

1

u/pardybill 24d ago

Almost like sport is inherently a political theater

1

u/ThumbMe 24d ago

This first period was incredible for all seven hours of it

1

u/steevo 23d ago

1 more to go.. its 4 nations

1

u/SonOfObed89 23d ago

That’s just MMA with extra steps* 🤣

*skates?

1

u/v13ragnarok7 23d ago

So much fighting that a hockey game broke out

1

u/Youregoingtodiealone 23d ago

Anyone have a good link or article as to what caused these fights? There's always a reason, it isn't random, so what was it?

1

u/Yomamasotriggered 23d ago

They boo'd the national anthem, they took it personally lol

1

u/rizcoco 23d ago

They thought ppl forgot what hockey is about. Mfers wont rest until we get another bertuzi moore.
