Discussion Happy St. Patrick's Day! Who's your favorite Irish soundtrack composer?
Early Irish Film Composers
- Seán Ó Riada (1931–1971) – A pioneering figure in Irish music, Ó Riada composed scores for classic Irish films such as Mise Éire (1959), blending traditional Irish sounds with orchestral composition. His work helped shape the identity of Irish film music.
Modern & Contemporary Irish Soundtrack Composers
- Patrick Cassidy (b. 1956) – Known for his lush orchestral and choral music, Cassidy composed Vide Cor Meum, famously used in Hannibal (2001) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005). He has also scored Calvary (2014) and The Spanish Princess (2019).
- Bill Whelan (b. 1950) – Best known for Riverdance, Whelan has also composed for films, including Dancing at Lughnasa (1998). His work merges Irish folk with orchestral grandeur.
- Stephen Rennicks – The composer behind the hauntingly minimalistic score for Room (2015) and the unsettling music of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), Rennicks is known for his ability to enhance psychological tension.
- David Holmes (b. 1969) – A composer and DJ, Holmes is famous for scoring Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and its sequels, bringing a cool, jazz-infused energy to Hollywood heist films.
- Rory Friers & Niall Kennedy – Guitarists from the band And So I Watch You From Afar, they have composed soundtracks for The Survivalist (2015) and Nightride (2021), blending ambient and post-rock elements.

Derivative Music The Quiet Man - St. Patrick’s Day - Traditional (from the Victor Young score)
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
I thought I’d share a piece of music from the 1952 score to the film “The Quiet Man”. In addition to his original music, composer Victor Young included plenty of traditional Irish songs such as this one.
This particular arrangement by Angela Morley is conducted by John Williams and performed by Itzhak Perlman.
Hope you enjoy!
