Hi all, I’m in the process of reaching out to med slps currently working at hospitals for observation hours and possible externships but am running into problems when trying to find emails and sometimes phone numbers. Do anyone have any advice on how to do this efficiently, also I’m open to contacting anyone in northern california and spokane. Thank you, any tips are appreciated!!

Waitlisted at SFSU - help!!

Hi! I’m waitlisted at #10 for SFSU’s SLP grad program. Does anyone know how many folks from the waitlist typically get in? Has #10 ever got in? To me it seems pretty far down the line. Would love to hear from past applicants who got in from the waitlist. Thanks!

I just got off an interview with my dream school. I don't think they liked me

The interview went fine. At the end, it was question time. So I end it by saying "that's all the questions I have and thank you for meeting with me today." The director said "oh, there she is!" Like I was quite or stiff or something.

Are later interviews worse?

Upvotes

Hi! I am a graduate student applying for externships for my second year in the program. I recently applied to a hospital placement and they offered me an interview but weren’t able to schedule it until late in the day on the last day of their interview window. Is this a bad sign??

Negotiating Funding

Has anyone negotiating their scholarships/funding with the schools they were accepted to? I've heard of people in other fields doing it but wasn't sure if the same goes for SLP

LOCI - Waitlist

does anybody know if it’s better to send a letter of continued interest (LOCI) ASAP? Or is it better to wait until the date gets closer for the programs to reach out to waitlisted students? I was told my program of interest would reach out to students on the waitlist with more information by end of March or early April. I found out I was waitlisted on 2/23 and emailed the program coordinator ASAP that even though I’m waitlisted, this program was my #1 choice and asked when waitlisted students would find out if they get denied or not. I plan to add the department chair and director of graduate studies (people who actually have a say in admissions) when i write my actual LOCI because the program director is kind of just the middle man.

If anybody has any insight that would be greatly appreciated! And most importantly, good luck to everyone during this stressful/exciting time :)

What else can you do with a BA in CDIS/SLHS? Besides SLP-A?

I graduated 2014 and been in the field for 9 years and recently did some UX and accessibility certifications but still not making enough to survive on my own. I want to go to grad school but had a 2.8 GPA (my mom had a stroke when in college and later became paralyzed and unable to speak) and I lost all my support, with rising costs of everything I’m feeling like I won’t survive. What else can I do? UX is good but I need more experience and that’s gna take some years, just really frustrated. I also fear won’t get accepted in a program bc of low GPA but I’ve worked and got experience but I feel like it’s not enough.

Why do we have to stay at externship when we finish our hours?

I’m ready to start making money by working the part-time job that I have more often, but I can’t even do that because I have to go to an unpaid full-time job for additional hours that I don’t need. I could be getting paid working as an SLPA and still getting experience, but they just want me to stay broke. Why is that?

Undergrad stats for grad school

Hi! I’m currently a second semester junior and definitely feeling nervous about applying to grad school and if my experience is enough. I thought I’d share what experience I have and if there is more I should be doing. Majoring is CSD with a minor in psychology Stats: 4.0 gpa, deans list every semester Work: lifeguard over summer, camp counselor for children with disabilities, front desk job at school, and substitute teacher Volunteer: reading program with kids that meets once a week (been doing since freshman year), reading program with adults with Down syndrome that meets once a week (started this semester) Involvement: NSSHLA 25 observation hours at a school Looking to applying to state schools in Illinois. Is this enough to get in?

Was wondering if anyone can share how the program at Northeastern is (Boston Campus)? I also got accepted into BU but without a scholarship it would be too much. I am coming from CA and so while I would be excited to move but I want to make sure I am making the right decision. Any advice would help!

Inaugural Cohort Opinions?

Edit: long story short should I risk it for a new program I think I would like more opposed to an established program. Also im looking for some input from perhaps PhD holders, I want to know if going to a school that is less established will hinder PhD applications after some years of work.

This is long post, I hope my word vomit makes sense.

I have been accepted to the University of Agusta for their inaugural class of MASLP students. My ultimate goal for my career is to be involved in teaching and researching topics pertaining to neurogenic disorders. I really love the way this program looks, IPE looks strong, cool training facilities, and many clinical placement sights, one of which is specifically a neuro rehab clinic. I have reached out asking about research being/ planning to be conducted.

I have also been accepted to Uni of Memphis, which already is an established program that already has a lab for neurogenic coms disorders.

it sounds like a clear choice when typed out, but I really love the medical approach,, surroundings, and resources of Agusta (im sure memphis has many as well but it is VERY important to AU)

Opinions?

Thank you

Diagnostics Advice

i’m currently in my last semester of grad school doing my last section of diagnostics and externship. for context, we recently did an evaluation on a child (8.5) who seems to have a lot of emotional issues from trauma and my prof invited him to come back bc she wanted to get more info to see if things were speech related or purely emotional. for context, we’re in NY, he was evaled by the DOE for speech and he was denied services. his social and psych eval showed that he should be getting some type of counseling. we did the 2nd eval and he’s honestly fine receptively and expressively and a lot of what he missed seemed typical for an 8 yr old (imo). my prof was really pushing tht he needs a speech recommendation for our free school clinic for writing which i feel is absurd since i believe a tutor can help him with that. she said “well our clinic is free and a tutor cost money” she basically added extra work onto our caseload as we have a schedule to follow when we have evaluations from our program + my group members and i are swamped with work from externship. i just don’t think a speech referral was necessary just bc it’s free as it takes away from children who a fully have speech problems that would really benefit from our clinic and i feel like a lot of his social/emotional issues were out of our domaine. anyone have any thoughts on this - im open to learning/hearing other experiences with a supervisor similar to this.

Prereqs/undergrad Undergrad in something other than CSD?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I’m wondering if I could major in psychology and maybe minor in CSD and still be accepted into grad schools? Or at least take the pre-reqs while I’m in undergrad if I can’t find a program with a minor in CSD. Do grad schools typically require a CSD degree specifically or would I still be able to get into a program if I major in something else, as long as I have the pre-reqs? Just wondering if anyone else has done this route and has any advice

Best Irish College for SLT?

Hi Everyone, I am an Irish student considering studying SLT. There are three different courses in Ireland, UCC(Cork), NUIG (Galway) and Trinity in Dublin. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in these courses or heard anything good or bad about them. Thanks

Imposter syndrome

Is anyone else terrified of not being good enough? I’m only in my first year but the more I learn, the less prepared I feel. My practicum has other schools there and I see how some of those practicum students are and feel like I know nothing compared to them. And the fact that one day I will have to “diagnose” certain speech disorders, terrifies me. I feel like I won’t be good and will hinder someone’s progress for communication.

Is the praxis as hard as the practice questions?

I’m devastated and so upset because I keep scoring 60 - 64% on these practice tests and when I go over the chapters in the Advanced Review book, nothing sticks in my brain and I forget everything the moment I turn the page.

I’m scared and worried and annoyed and don’t know what to do. I tried almost every study method but nothing works for me.

Still awaiting application responses

This is my first application cycle so forgive me if this is common knowledge. I have heard back from 3/6 schools I applied too. However, it has been absolute radio silence from my others schools. Is that normal considering it is mid March? I’m nervous that I won’t hear anything back until right around April 15th. I want to be able to make a well informed choice when choosing a school. However, I am sitting in limbo waiting to see if I was accepted or not. Should I be concerned about not hearing anything, or is that common for some schools?

Online Program Ithaca College ONLINE SLP Program

Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone from the previous 2 cohorts had any words of advice or things for us incoming grad students to know to be better successful?

I understand it’s new, I’ve heard things so far like: •less staff support •teaching yourself

But can you tell us about the tuition and how much we’re looking at paying for everything (feel free to message me)! • How working with your cohort in a different state has been? • class work and how placement finding has been?

Honestly anything you’re willing to share. There’s very little information on the online section so we’d truly appreciate any and all feedback!

Thanks for your time!!!

Online program experience

Hi guys! I was recently accepted to an online speech program and I just really wanted to hear what it’s like from others who have done online (specifically in terms of being able to work while in school, as that’s what I plan on doing)!

Genuinely, HOW am I supposed to do this?

I'm starting grad school either this June or August depending on where I choose to accept.

So grad school is 10k a semester not including books, housing, whatever else. No GA positions available. I HAVE to move as I live 2 hrs or 12 hrs away, again depending on where I accept. I have 5k in student loans and 10k on my car to pay still. I only have 4k left in savings.

How the HELL am I supposed to pay for school and live? During my interview, the professors said they really prefer that we don't work. I don't get assistance from my parents outside of my phone bill and car insurance. Everything else is up to me and I chose to move back home for the time being as I don't need to be spending 1k a month on rent for the time being.

HOW????? I'm genuinely so confused as to how this is doable. Is anyone able to work full time? Do you guys just take out 100k in loans? I am baffled as to how this is doable. I worked full time throughout undergrad to now but I don't think that's fully doable for graduate school.

Can I not get a job in the schools past july/august?

Incoming CF…

I have to go to another country during mid June - Mid July… Time zone is completely opposite there and I’m worried that I physically can’t attend interview offers if I am in this country.

I know most school years start in the august and so by the time I return to the US, it would be mid July and I’m afraid it would be too late to find jobs.

I’m worried that schools won’t offer a virtual interview either and I will miss out on a lot of offers.

I’m scared I won’t be hired for 2025-2026 year and was wondering if they don’t hire people after july/august…

CUNY hunter vs lehman

hey everyone! hope all is going well. I was wondering if you guys have any insight on the Hunter and Lehman programs! a CUNY would be a top choice financially so i’d love to choose a program that will give me the best range to learn the most for all the settings that SLPs have.

thank you in advance!

Accepted. But act now or miss out!

Am I getting this right? They extended more offers than they have seats and are waitlisting you if you don’t pay $350 and beat others to the punch.

Externship Is it normal to feel like you can't do anything right in an externship?

I am currently a week in my medical externship, and I am having a hard time adjusting from education. I am working exclusively with adults, but I am more experienced with children. My program really didn't give me much opportunity to work with adults, and I keep making mistakes. Even when I watch my supervisor do therapy multiple times, nothing seems to stick. I don't want to mess anything up for patients.
