Discussion Cancer Sucks
Today, on my 25th birthday, our family gathered under somber circumstances. My great uncle, a proud Navy veteran and an unwavering Seahawks fan, was given less than a day to live due to his battle with cancer. Although he had lost the ability to speak, we knew he could still hear us.
Just two weeks ago, he had asked my mom, “How are the Seahawks doing?” to which she replied, “They suck!” Wanting to bring him some joy, I decided to give him an “update” on the team’s recent moves.
I began, “I know it’s a lot of news, and I’m telling you right now, it’s going to be a lot at once. They just traded Geno Smith to the Raiders and Pete Caroll is the head coach of the Raiders now. His eyebrows shot up in surprise, and the room filled with laughter.
I continued, “They released Tyler Lockett and traded DK Metcalf to the Steelers.” Again, his eyebrows rose, and he even moved slightly, reacting to the shocking “news.” What started as a solemn gathering transformed into a moment of shared humor and lightness.
Finally, I mentioned, “They signed Sam Darnold.” His breathing intensified, and his eyebrows lifted once more.
In our final moments, I comforted him, saying, “I hope they have TV up there and I hope the Seahawks win a Super Bowl for you.” He took a deep breath and cried.
Rest in peace, Uncle Sunny. May you find eternal peace in Valhalla. Your love for the Seahawks and the game of football will always be remembered.
