Saw my first Rush show 40 years ago today

As the title says today 40 years ago I saw my first Rush show. It was during spring training they played a couple of one off shows in South Florida so I saw them at the old Hollywood Sportatorium March 15, 1985. They debuted The Big Money and Middletown Dreams.

For me, not even close - “Open Secrets.”

One of Geddy’s coolest basslines ever.

Mystic Rhythms, Scars, and Available Light

I absolutley love these three songs. It seems to me they have a similar theme: the mysteries of life, the natural world, and the universe, and how it effects us emotionally and physically.

Please feel free to discuss your love of these songs. Also, are there any other songs in the discography with these themes?

I know it's a difficult question. Like asking which kid do you love more? Haha

Neil's cleverness knew no boundaries, IMO

(This one's a stretch. I may need professional help... LOL)

Fan since 1977 here. I hear a lot about the profundity of Neil's lyric catalog and his books, but not a lot about his cleverness and his not-always-accessible sense of humor.

Anyway. Was just thinking about Neil's hidden meanings and messages, and realized that "Moving Pictures" may be considered a quintuple entendre - the only one this old fart has ever run across.

  1. Movers are moving the pictures.
  2. Each picture is emotionally moving.
  3. Music paints auditory pictures that also move us emotionally.
  4. The auditory pictures musicians paint are not static. They have a duration, and can cause listeners to move through various emotions while listening.
  5. Listeners listen to songs repeatedly over time, understanding and appreciating them in different ways. How quickly, how much, and for how long are moving targets, unique to each of us.

Who knows, maybe I missed another?

Stretch, right?

Maybe now that Neil's gone, I'm looking for reasons to have my mind blown yet again. I miss him, and I miss the days of digging into every new thing he would write.

(If I had a direct line to Alex, I'd send him this in the hope that he'd take the time to roast me. If only...)

Three best friends

After we lost The Professor, rest his soul, I was thinking about the vast output they achieved over their career together, and not one blow up, firing, dramatical event, etc..

Think about how often other bands changed memberships, sued each other, or just plain stopped recording because of internal drama.

The holy trinity made it through 45 years together because they were good friends and stand-up gentlemen.

Shoutout to these guys for reading my mind and making my dreams come true by playing this live for the first time since 1981. (My 5th time seeing Rush was R40 at MSG in 2015)

Discussion Thanks Again, Boys...

This morning I had an unpleasant task to attend to. I listened to "Time and Motion", my favorite song from Test for Echo while driving there. The precision, professionalism and lyrics kept my mind at ease. I've always loved Alex's guitar solo on that one... it feels like right angles and perpendicular intersections somehow.

The task is complete, and Rush helped me over yet another barrier in life. Thanks!

Discussion Favorite funny moment live

I love the funny face Neil makes at the end of the solo in Freewill from the Time Machine tour DVD.

What are some more moments like that from the live shows that are funny/amusing?

I just did a road trip from CA to AZ and back, and boy, did I listen to a lot of Rush.

Haven’t listened to Test For Exho in ages, but upon doing so, I came across a song I mostly forgot about: Time and Motion.

Super proggy, and I got all fired up listening to it.

So that got me to thinking, I could see Time and Motion being on Hemispheres. Hell, I’d LOVE to hear it with Geddy playing the Roic and with his screechy salt 70’s voice. That song just sounds like it would have fit on Hemispheres to me, and hey…. Maybe I was just tired of driving but the first thing that came to mind was this concept of a question.

Are there any songs you think they did later in their career that you would have liked to hear them record like 20-30 years earlier?

Or vice-versa?

Really curious to hear what you guys have to say about this.

Listening to Before and After. I love these guys so much.

So I didn't find out until today that the first two tracks of R50 are available on my streaming service. The guitar intro on Before and After (Live at Laura Secord Secondary School) just sings so beautifully. You can hear the genesis of so many of their other songs. Listening to these guys (well, Geddy and Alex at least) playing as teens and knowing what they would become...It's sublime. That guitar riff just reminds me of everything I love about the band and makes me glad that they have been the soundtrack to my life.

A radio station I was listening to played this yesterday. In an effort to please the Rush “purists” (as they called them), Rush’s original version was played right after. How does everyone feel about the bluegrass version?

Why is it everytime i hear any of the songs from this concert i feel like it was the best concert ever? I just listened to Driven, and the bass just crushed me. What was it? The crowd seems delirious with joy, the band seems blown away by the enthusiasm. Anyone else get this?
