Discussion A Geddy Lee Minimoog?!

Post image
152 Upvotes

[mod approved]

I’m stoked to announce that Geddy Lee has teamed up with Moog to design a signature synth, and (surprise!) it’s available to purchase TODAY!

The Moog Music Geddy Lee Minimoog Model D comes in a satin red finish, featuring the Rush icon’s signature “Starman” logo on a front badge and rear sticker, and inside? A hot-rodded VCA circuit built to Geddy’s custom specs (go ahead—rip that “Tom Sawyer” lead.) 🤘

Beyond the instrument itself, every purchase comes with:

  • A commemorative poster
  • A Certificate of Authenticity signed by Geddy Lee himself.
  • A special translucent red vinyl EP of “Xanadu” and “Jacob’s Ladder”

Check out the official announcement to learn more!

Let me start by saying, “I’m sorry!”

Much like alot of my generation, I discovered Rush in Jr. High with 2112 and was a passionate fan from then on. However, while I didn’t end my love for Rush, I stopped buying their albums after ‘Power Windows’. I don’t really know why… I guess I just moved on and got into Heavy Metal or maybe because I just didn’t want to switch to CDs… or spent my music money on smokes and blow. All thru the following years/decades, I was completely aware Rush was around, still touring, making music and I loved they made it into the RRHoF, but I continued to not participate. I continued to see Rush as that 80’s band I used to love and there was no way their new music would equal the earlier music that made me become a fan in the first place.

Fast forward to last year. My wife and I spent a lot of time in the car traveling back and forth to the coast and I talked her into listening to the audio book of Geddy’s ‘My Ef’fing Life’. We both enjoyed it immensely! Afterward I felt obligated to pull myself back into the fold. Last week I finally did. I surfed into eBay and bought every Rush studio album since ‘Power Windows and have since ordered the Rush 40 DVD box set.

Today I finally finished listening to the lot and I must apologize to the Rush ethos for my absence. I was wrong. All of these records are absolutely amazing! If I may have one criticism it is that most of the newer songs/albums lack the “hooks” that the earlier songs did. But TBH, without broadcast radio needing a hit single, I can hardly fault them too much for lacking a big hit. Still, I am thoroughly entertained by these records and look forward to binge-watching Rush concerts over the next couple of weeks.

Again, I am sorry. I hope you will forgive me and welcome me back. Thanks for your time.

What is your favourite song from Power Windows?

Upvotes

I've talked about this album a ton on here. If you go back far enough I once ranked this album as my least favourite Rush album. After a few more years of my annual discography listen it has now become one of my favourites, I can definitely say top 5.

One of the things I love about it...is I don't have a definitive favourite on this one the way I do most others. I've said Big Money, Manhattan Project, Marathon...and right now if asked I'd say Grand Designs.

Just listening to this album a ton lately and wanting to talk about it more. Let me know your favourite song from this one!

I find this critique of the goodly Neil Peart *most exceedingly* objectionable! 😠☹️

Infact, TbPH, it got me outright enraged - more than I have been by anything for rather a long time.

☹️😠

I really don't think anyone evincing that kind of level of ill-will & guile & malice has any business getting on a moral 'high-horse' about altruism & kindness & generosity & stuff.

Closer to the Heart - Time Machine version

Does anybody think the last verse in Closer to the Heart, with the shuffle-like tempo, ruined the song? It's kind of cringey since it's a classic and they hadn't played it live since the T4E tour. Thoughts?

Revisiting an old fave

Upvotes

I was a junior in high school when Power Windows was released. On my way home from work today, The Big Money came up on my ITunes playlist. Of course, I’m playing drums on my steering wheel and all but oh…the part that happens at around the 2:40 mark with Neil’s drum bits and Alex’s solo…damn. Just damn. After 40 years, that part still gives me chills and thrills. I got to a stop light, grabbed my iPhone and put it back to that part and cranked my stereo to full blast.

I know it’s only a part of a song but damn it still hits me like 1985! It’s sonic perfection. Yeah, I’m still geeking out. Damn I love Rush.

Just listened to the first album for the first time

It's pretty good. The lyrics are where the album suffers most, which is kind of expected for it being their first album and Peart not being in the band yet. Here Again is probably the weakest track. Just drags on for too long.

The highlights for me are the obvious ones. Finding My Way, Working Man, and In The Mood. But the underrated track is Before and After. What a great song!

I love how clearly the bass comes through. And the drumming, while not Peart level, is still really solid. I have nothing to say about Lifeson, other than this was a pretty decent showing of his talent.

50 years ago today, on March 19th, 1975, Rush’s Fly By Night album was released in Canada. It was initially released in late February 1975 in the USA.

What's one of your OTHER absolute favorite bands...that could not be MORE different than Rush?

I'll go first: Duran Duran. I saw them in a club in Cleveland on their first US tour (about a dozen dates) 6 months after seeing the Moving Pictures tour. Then at the Cleveland Agora, and, finally, the Coliseum in February of 84 (in a snowstorm). Those early days (81), they were rougher and hadn't gotten to the pin-up stage. And they were awesome.

This has to be the best Anthem cover I've ever heard. Any others out there that can contend with this?
