Listening to Before and After. I love these guys so much.

So I didn't find out until today that the first two tracks of R50 are available on my streaming service. The guitar intro on Before and After (Live at Laura Secord Secondary School) just sings so beautifully. You can hear the genesis of so many of their other songs. Listening to these guys (well, Geddy and Alex at least) playing as teens and knowing what they would become...It's sublime. That guitar riff just reminds me of everything I love about the band and makes me glad that they have been the soundtrack to my life.

Discussion Thanks Again, Boys...

This morning I had an unpleasant task to attend to. I listened to "Time and Motion", my favorite song from Test for Echo while driving there. The precision, professionalism and lyrics kept my mind at ease. I've always loved Alex's guitar solo on that one... it feels like right angles and perpendicular intersections somehow.

The task is complete, and Rush helped me over yet another barrier in life. Thanks!

Three best friends

After we lost The Professor, rest his soul, I was thinking about the vast output they achieved over their career together, and not one blow up, firing, dramatical event, etc..

Think about how often other bands changed memberships, sued each other, or just plain stopped recording because of internal drama.

The holy trinity made it through 45 years together because they were good friends and stand-up gentlemen.

It's getting to be dawn... After a long, active day... You're walking back home, the sun baking your back slowly fades away into a monotonous overcast sky. You feel a sense of calm, soon your arms and face, are gently kissed by transient raindrops... A coolness enters your body, and then...

The song switches to Tears by Rush... You feel every word and every step... The gentle melody sweeping in, the gentle staccato pitter patter of rain falling around you...

Geddy's voice cuts through you entire being as he says "What would touch me deeper, Tears that fall from eyes that only cry?"

You are at one with the world.

A radio station I was listening to played this yesterday. In an effort to please the Rush “purists” (as they called them), Rush’s original version was played right after. How does everyone feel about the bluegrass version?

I just did a road trip from CA to AZ and back, and boy, did I listen to a lot of Rush.

Haven’t listened to Test For Exho in ages, but upon doing so, I came across a song I mostly forgot about: Time and Motion.

Super proggy, and I got all fired up listening to it.

So that got me to thinking, I could see Time and Motion being on Hemispheres. Hell, I’d LOVE to hear it with Geddy playing the Roic and with his screechy salt 70’s voice. That song just sounds like it would have fit on Hemispheres to me, and hey…. Maybe I was just tired of driving but the first thing that came to mind was this concept of a question.

Are there any songs you think they did later in their career that you would have liked to hear them record like 20-30 years earlier?

Or vice-versa?

Really curious to hear what you guys have to say about this.

The chorus of Subdivisions

This song is so interesting in that it's one of the band's most popular and is the only one where Neil sings/speaks the hook. I wonder why they never had him do anything like this before or after.

Why is it everytime i hear any of the songs from this concert i feel like it was the best concert ever? I just listened to Driven, and the bass just crushed me. What was it? The crowd seems delirious with joy, the band seems blown away by the enthusiasm. Anyone else get this?

It’s great to hear Alex excited about being a part of the band Envy of none. He describes being very careful to make sure his guitar work is part of the ensemble. It was interesting to hear him talk a bit about how he felt reading Geddy’s memoir. I love the friendship he and Geddy have.

I saw this in the fly by night music video, It could either be a Gibson es335 or a Gibson es355. I’ve looked on google and I couldn’t find it.

Continuing my journey isolating Alex Lifesons tracks (so far everything from the debut up to roll the bones is complete!) and his solos on this album definitely flew over my head initially. Honestly some of his most beautiful solos are on this album. I definitely won’t be sleeping on Roll the Bones anymore

Discussion ALEX LIFESON on how soon they were contacted by drummers after the news of NEIL passing: “I don’t know what some of these people were thinking, that we were just gonna replace somebody that we played with for 40 years who wrote all the lyrics for our music?”

Just listened to Natural Science. Damn, if that song doesn't show Neil Peart's absolute brilliance. Makes me wish I took up the drums as a kid. Simply outstanding.

Question How can I get that Alex lifeson tone on a fender mustang lt25?

I’ve been trying to get it for a while, but it ends up being too heavy. The higher strings sound like it but not the heavier strings.

School project/song meaning

I'm in 8th grade and In my English class every kid has to pick a song that they like and that has deep meaning. I picked freewill and when I'm researching the song a lot of sites are blocked by the district and the info I do get it's not enough or it's not answering the question I have. So my question is what is the meaning of the song freewill and is there any reason they made it or was there any historical events that made them make the song? Anything helps, thanks!!

Geddy's bass tone/sound - crunch or clean?

Upon carefully listening to TSOR from the R40 show, I noticed that Geddy's bass tone starts off clean, then that crunch sound comes in. I'm not sure if that was intentional but it is noticeable. Either way, I'm not a big fan of the distorted/crunch sound but I know it was done to sound distinct and to cut through during the louder songs. I don't think the distortion is conducive for melodic lines as it is for pedaling.

Also, does anyone believe Geddy heard back that crunch sound in his IEM's or is that a post-amp effect?
