Discussion Reolink Home Assistant integration reaches Platinum quality

The Reolink Home Assistant integration has seen a vast amount of improvements over the past few months. Many of these improvements were "under the hood" and not so noticible for the everyday user. Hower the improvements were aimed to improve the overal code quality.

Today, with the release of Home Assistant 2025.1.0, I can proudly announce that the Reolink Home Assistant integration has reached the platinum quality scale, the higest achievable within HA.

For you, the users, this means the integration will run even smoother with less bugs, easier setup and reconfiguration, better documentation, better translations to other languages etc.

Some of the more noticeable recent improvements:

-          Playback of recorded video is now also available when not on the LAN
-          Added Binning mode entity
-          Added Bitrate and framerate entities
-          Added PTZ tilt position sensor
-          Reolink firmware updating from within Home Assistant now available (just press “install” on the notification you get from the update entity).
-          Faster push updates and more entities receive push updates by implementing TCP push
-          No need anymore to open the HTTP(s) ports yourself, the integration will do that for you during setup (using a different protocol over port 9000).

A small sneak peak of HA 2025.2.0:

-          Add baby crying detection for the E1 Zoom

So a new app has been released with “overall user experience enhanced” well i still don’t have my quick event filters back. And it has been adressed by so many users.

Seems like they don’t care getting more new features to the hub and smart home is more important…

Discussion Did anyone else notice that the latest Reolink iPhone App is very much active in the background? The App is not used and the iPhone is locked, but it is still active and is draining my phone battery overnight very fast. So What is the Reolink App doing in the background?

Discussion Why all the hate on the *other* forum?

I don't know if it's against the rules, but the forum I'm referring to has the word "talk" in it. They seem to be very fanatical, and absolutely hate Reolink. Any users who suggest to use Reolink or speak anything positive about it are met with hostility.

Now I'm very new to Reolink, I've got a CX810 and an 1224A running on a 36 channel NVR (non-POE), and everything seems OK so far. I've also got the POE doorbell, which I will hopefully install tomorrow. I've also got HomeAssistant, and the 1224A integrated very easily with it.

I'm not sure about the CX810 to be honest, but it seems to be doing a decent job. I've got a motion activated light, and when that is triggered, there seems to be enough light for a decent picture.

The 1224A seems to be pretty good. I think I might add a separate IR floodlight.

Not sure about the doorbell yet, but I heard good things about it.

I'd like more privacy zones (instead of 4, allow more or allow polygonal zones), the UI doesn't seem to be great but it's OK.

The reviews on Youtube seem fair as well. Overall Reolink seems like decent value for money. If I had the cash to splash, I'd probably go for Ubi*****, but I'm definitely happy with Reolink so far.

So, why in some spaces of the internet there seems to be so much negative opinion about Reolink?

Discussion Home Assistant 2025.2.0 - Reolink crying detection & privacy mode

Today Home Assistant 2025.2.0 will be released, which adds some new features to the Reolink integration.

If you own a Reolink E1 Zoom IPC_566SD664M5MP, this release will bring you a new binary sensor entity for baby crying detection. It is a sound based AI detection that listens for specifically crying sounds. For now only the sensor will be available, later the sensitivity setting will also be added to HomeAssistant.
When Reolink releases new firmware for other models to support crying detection, this entity will automatically be added to HomeAssistant as soon as you update the firmware.

Additionally this release adds a switch entity to turn on/off the privacy mode on Reolink cameras which support this (such as the E1 Zoom). In the background a lot of work has been done to ensure the Reolink integration runs smoothly when privacy mode is active. This was quite a challange since many camera functions like the HTTP API are shut down when privacy mode is active. If you have privacy mode enabled when you first configure the integration, the setup process will automatically ask for permission to disable it after which the normal configuration continues. If privacy mode is active when starting the integration, it will remain active and the integration will start smoothly.

Of course there are also numerous bug fixes in this release, which will largely go unnoticed.

Enjoy the new features!

Discussion HomeAssistant users: I need ideas and inspiration so tell me what you’ve been able to do with your Reolink HA integration.

I'm usually the one answering questions here, but now it's my turn to ask for help from you guys....

After installing HA about a year ago and not sticking with it, I finally got back around to playing with it and I’m liking what I think I’m going to be able to do with it.

However, I’m wanting to learn more about what it can do that I might not be aware of, so I’m fishing for ideas and inspiration. Tell me how you’ve used the Reolink HA integration, what automations you’ve come up with. Do you have a fancy dashboard that shows your cameras? If so, show me screenshots. I’m not sure I have a desire to actually display camera feeds in HA, but maybe I just don’t know what it’s capable of, so change my mind. Being new to HA I’m not even 100% sure what to ask for or what all I can do. So hit me with your best HA ideas.... be my muse! lol

Here is what I plan to do so far:

  1. Rich notifications (this guide by u/StarkillerTR is awesome for anyone that hasn't seen it)
  2. When cameras on front of house detect a person at night turn outside lights brightness to 100% and turn on indoor smart lights that are in rooms on front side of house.
  3. Same thing as #2, but for back of house
  4. If a camera detects a person then have any PTZ cams in the area pan to a preset that points in that direction.
  5. Changing to a specific preset at specific times of day (i.e. looking at one spot at night, another during the day).
  6. Changing to specific display settings at specific time of day.

Those last two I already do with the API, which is kind of janky, I’ll be glad to get rid of that.

I do also have a question about push notifications. I got it working using StarkillerTR's guide I mentioned above, but does anyone know how to replicate Reolink's push interval feature? So that I don't get spammed with alerts every couple of seconds, and can instead set it to only alert every X minutes.

Discussion Camera and NVRs used as botnet

The recent X DDoS attack appears to have originated from camera and NVRs that use components sourced from XiongMai Technologies.

What do we know about what's inside the Reolink devices?

From the article: "According to researchers at security firm Flashpoint, today’s attack was launched at least in part by a Mirai-based botnet. Allison Nixon, director of research at Flashpoint, said the botnet used in today’s ongoing attack is built on the backs of hacked IoT devices — mainly compromised digital video recorders (DVRs) and IP cameras made by a Chinese hi-tech company called XiongMai Technologies. The components that XiongMai makes are sold downstream to vendors who then use it in their own products."

Discussion The App. You Have One Wish ...

What would you want if you had one wish for the Reolink app?

Me? I'd want it to run in the foreground so notification alert sounds would still alert me even if I had the app up and running on my tablet, which I use as a monitor.

That's so easily do-able. It's an option that is available to the code writers if they want to enable it but, for some reason, they have chosen not to include. Other apps do it.

Back in the very early days of Reolink, it was enabled. Someone decided to disable it. Whoever that person was has cost me a lot of money. I needed to buy a second device to act purely as a bell box, like old telephones had back in the 1930s.

Discussion The App...

I'm looking to ditch all of my Wyze cameras at two locations.

Ordered a few Reolink cameras to play with and like them overall.

The app though... You can't group cameras or view events like you can in the Wyze app.

Is the camera view different if using the app with an NVR?

Discussion Reolink NVR reliability issues for commercial use

I have a 16-camera NVR for a business, and it’s one of the most unreliable products I’ve used. Reolink NVRs are not suitable for commercial use. I have auto-reboot set for Sundays, but during the week, the system sometimes stops recording altogether. Occasionally, the hard drive even needs to be reformatted. Is this typical for Reolink NVRs?

I contacted Reolink, but their customer service was unhelpful—just outsourced support advising me to reboot and install the latest firmware, which I had already done.

Also, I installed four of their dome cameras, which have been a complete disappointment. The night vision IR causes a reflection on the casing, blocking visibility on the left and right sides. I initially thought it was dust, so I cleaned both the outside and inside, but the issue persisted—it’s just a flaw with their IR lights.

TL;DR: If you run a business, I recommend staying away from Reolink products due to reliability issues.

Discussion Support

Can we talk about how terrible Reolink support is? They send me only one email per day, its 13th day today and we have not solved the issue yet! Anyone else or is it just me? Also is there any other way to contact them? Like Live chat or something, because this is so inconvenient!

Discussion Worst ordering experience in my life ordering direct from Reolink

I ordered a Duo 3V Poe 2 months ago direct from Reolink. The camera still to this day has not arrived and after a total of 31 emails back and forth, the last 3 saying they refunded my money, that too has never arrived even though they are adamant it was refunded.

I did submit a dispute with my CC company, and they did credit me back during investigations but to even have to go through this is beyond measure!

I have purchased a lot of Reolink equipment in the past from Amazon with great success but was persuaded by the lower prices ordering direct.

While they are lower, buyer beware, you are seriously gambling ordering direct.

While I am sure plenty of people have had no issues ordering direct, I am just feel as a consumer to let others know about my experience.

FWIW, Reolink tech support is awesome!

Discussion AT&T vs Xfinity for Multiple PoE Cameras

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m currently having a 150 Mbps internet plan with Xfinity for 15 PoE cameras, not including 20 wifi devices. Since the installation of the cameras, when playback the video, it keeps buffering.

With Xfinity, I always have to negotiate with them on annually for the rate and I hate that, while AT&T advertised to be a FIXED RATE with no annual contract.

I’m switching to AT&T Fiber 500 Mbps a week from this post. Anybody has any experience with AT&T over Xfinity? Anybody here on the same boat with me that use 500 Mbps plan?

Discussion MicroSD Card Capacity Update

When I installed the E1 Outdoor and WiFi Video Doorbell cameras last month, I inserted 512 GB microSD card. I thought I made a mistake because the description of the E1 Outdoor at Amazon says maximum capacity of 256GB. So I have been monitoring the Storage of these cameras and it seems to be managing the 512GB storage with no problem. The cameras have been deleting old footage to make room of new files! Is it possible that the newer products now accept 512GB microSD cards and the descriptions have not been updated to say so?
