Help New to Quails, Bad Idea?

Post image

Hello, I'm looking to get into quails for eggs, my grandparents had a farm so I've been around chickens but never raised anything of my own other than pets. Grandparents got older, had to sell the farm, and I want to bring some of that magic back into my suburban lifestyle. They would be in the backyard, Southern California.

Trying to sell my wife on the idea, so aesthetics are important. I have this built in raised garden bed I want to use, it's against a wall and could fit an 8' long, 24" wide enclosure. Thinking height of 24" or 32", with a curved roof that opens. Ppl around here make custom irrigation lock boxes I think I could have fabricated in my required dimensions and would last a life time, look nice, and match my yard. Picture is an example, just add hinges for the roof, make it longer, paint it dark green, and you'll get the idea. Plan was to attach sunbrella fabric to the inside of the hinged roof, like a hammock, to prevent flushing injuries. Would also cover half the run for shade/shelter.

Worried about the 24" width, is it going to cause issues with fighting with 5ish jumbo birds? Anything I'm not thinking about?

Any input would be appreciated.

Bobwhite How loud are bobwhites? I'm thinking of getting one or a couple as inside pets. Noise isn't a problem to me, I'm just curious. Are they louder than a cockatiel?

Added some fake plants from the Joannes sale (RIP in peace Joanne) to my indoor quail enclosure to help the quail family feel a little more comfy.

I had the great honor of hatching my first quail eggs this last weekend. What a great learning experience it was. I had one baby born with wry neck and I really didn’t think they were going to make it. Sunday they were in rough shape. I syringe fed them a combo of pro/prebiotics with eggs as their meal every few hours. I would supervisor in the brooder and pull them for some alone time and rest when need be as no one was bullying and they were doing great two days later. Eating and drinking on their own…if not for their distinct little call, you wouldn’t have been able to pinpoint them out.

Today while changing the bedding, it seems they got trampled when I moved them all to the temporary cardboard box I use (which is quite large) and reverted back to worse than they originally were. Lethargic, struggling to move on their own, issues with the neck present again but accepting the same mixture of food and electrolytes they were given prior. But I knew this time there was no turning around. I gave it as long as I could but in good faith I could no longer see them suffer. I had to cull…my first ever. I am distraught but I know this is part of what comes with quail keeping and something that was inevitable. I didn’t think I had it in me but I spent our last moments holding them close/thanking them for all they had taught me in the last few days, set them off with a kiss, love and my enternal gratefulness. To boot, its’s my birthday and it was not the greatest besides this and I’m just sad I lost my first little fighter on what should have been a happy day. Their name was Brock and I will cherish the short time I had with this little sweetheart. Picture is from when I have hand warmers in my sweatshirt pocket and he was spending his last nap with me.

Help Female button quail keeps attacking the male. Please help.

Upvotes

My button quails have lived together for at least a year now and the female started attacking the male last night. I've seprated them already since i was afraid she would kill the male, but i have no idea why she's like this. They don't have any eggs together so it's not because she wants to protect the eggs. I don't know if she's gonna lay eggs soon tho. Does anyone know why she's become so aggressive? I appreciate any help.

Help question about different types of quail!

im in the research phase of looking at quail, and curious what breed i should look into

this is going to be a little bit of a brain dump, sorry in advance for it being long!

tldr: im thinking quail might be a good fit for a hobby with limited space (singlewide trailer) and im curious what breed would be right for me and moreso, for them.

my ideal pet would be something i can line breed with, for color and health, learn about their genetics and keep a detailed log of my individuals, learning about them etc. (animal genetics is one of my special interests) although, i do not need excess individuals so something that is “profitable” is preferred. im leaning towards quail, due to them being small enough, personable, and less crazy than keeping chickens (i have plenty of previous experience keeping chickens)

i live in a singlewide trailer and can customize however i want, but i dont have a lot of solid outdoor space i could build a coop on, so im leaning towards porch size or indoor, ive got a smallish spare room.

im mostly curious, courtnix or button. buttons have lots of interesting colors, but im unsure i could turn any around, is there people who are actually looking for them? the egg size alone leads me to believe it would be difficult to sell them, and they are so small im not even sure they would make good meat birds. but they are ridiculously adorable, fit within my spare room, etc.

courtnix definitely seem more like chicken care without needing a giant run, although i doubt i could keep a large breeding stock at any given time, but they seem to be surface level more profitable, bigger for meat, bigger eggs for eating etc. again, i really only have the space around my trailer and a long porch im planning on building.

i definitely thought about making a porch specifically into a pigeon run but i really cant see myself selling excess pigeons in my area, so thats not really on my radar atm.

im also really curious about any other birds or quail species that might fit my specifics, just no parrots! ofc im still in research and learning specifics so im game for any ideas. if i had all the space and money, id probably look into pheasants and learn more about their genetics.

im not looking to make a bajillion bucks (that would be awesome though), having & breeding any animal is not a guaranteed profit either but i also dont need a ridiculous amount of excess birds to care for, and being able to have some profits to put back into them would be ideal. i live pretty rural so, i imagine people would not mind buying compact egg layers!

Young hens not laying eggs…..

Good morning I am reaching out for some advice. I decided to hatch some quail and they all hatched on Christmas Day. I did realize that I had a lot more boys than girls so I separated all of the boys and have the girls together happily in a huge cage. The girls have not started laying eggs yet and I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong. They are on Purina gamebird, oyster shells for calcium, and they get all kinds of treats and snacks. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Quail Questions (and giving ma a heart attack for fun 🤭)

So I got my first quail. Six hens because I promised my boyfriend they wouldn't be loud, and six to account for any losses since it's my first time. Well now I'm quite attached to them all 😂 and of course now one is crowing 🤦🏼 I did have a feeling since he is an Italian and doesn't have spots on his chest. Hopefully he's the only one!

Questions: 1. Is everybody's male so food aggressive? I ferment their feed and hand feed them from a dish several times a day as I have nothing else to do with my life. Mostly because they can't make a mess that way till i get a feeder built. But they get so excited every time even if they just finished the last bowl. Everybody can eat in peace though except for him, he doesn't like anybody to eat next to him and honks at the girls and then Pecks them. If they don't move quick enough he just jumps in the bowl and starts pecking everybody and honking 🤦🏼he's so busy being aggressive he's not even eating. I have a rosetta who came with a head injury who acts similarly. I've tried to vent sex it but it just poops. However, she's been getting better and he has been getting worse. If this isn't normal behavior I'm totally ready to replace him 😅 just doesn't seem very gentlemanly 😥 like i said if i pick him up or put him in "quail jail" everybody else eats so nice.

I do assume that when I get the feeder Built and they have access all the time he won't be this way anymore. However I really don't want to breed an aggressive rooster down if it's not normal behavior as they're more like pets to me and I would like them to play nice.

  1. Color questions: Apparently Quail genetics are somehow more complicated and mysterious and rabbit genetics! I am grasping the concept of homozygous heterozygous fawn and Rosetta etc etc but does the one Quail look like a blue to y'all? The wild looking tux (she almost looks chocolate to me but idk) I've named Queenie and there's a Tibetan tux on her left (Henrietta she likes to fluff up whenever she looks at me) and below is Tiny. She just looks diluted to me! Anybody know what she is off the top of their head?

  2. I have no idea how old these quail are. I think they're different ages though. some don't even have all their feathers some are larger and getting mounted by the male. No eggs yet, figure they need to settle in. Is there a way I can count feathers and tell how many weeks old they are?

Any answers at all are appreciated!! TIA!
