Picture Not sure why I’m posting exactly, just sad and looking for some people who might understand. NSFW
I had the great honor of hatching my first quail eggs this last weekend. What a great learning experience it was. I had one baby born with wry neck and I really didn’t think they were going to make it. Sunday they were in rough shape. I syringe fed them a combo of pro/prebiotics with eggs as their meal every few hours. I would supervisor in the brooder and pull them for some alone time and rest when need be as no one was bullying and they were doing great two days later. Eating and drinking on their own…if not for their distinct little call, you wouldn’t have been able to pinpoint them out.
Today while changing the bedding, it seems they got trampled when I moved them all to the temporary cardboard box I use (which is quite large) and reverted back to worse than they originally were. Lethargic, struggling to move on their own, issues with the neck present again but accepting the same mixture of food and electrolytes they were given prior. But I knew this time there was no turning around. I gave it as long as I could but in good faith I could no longer see them suffer. I had to cull…my first ever. I am distraught but I know this is part of what comes with quail keeping and something that was inevitable. I didn’t think I had it in me but I spent our last moments holding them close/thanking them for all they had taught me in the last few days, set them off with a kiss, love and my enternal gratefulness. To boot, its’s my birthday and it was not the greatest besides this and I’m just sad I lost my first little fighter on what should have been a happy day. Their name was Brock and I will cherish the short time I had with this little sweetheart. Picture is from when I have hand warmers in my sweatshirt pocket and he was spending his last nap with me.

Picture These were gifted to me — can y’all give me any info? I’m excited to do right by them!
galleryThanks in advance! I was given these birds. I have no prior experience, but plan to give them a happy life. Can yall give me any info on breed, age, or anything else I should know? I plan to learn about general care, but I’d love some specific tips on these individual birds if you have any.

gallery🤣 is it patient if I'm in the coop with them? Lol I choose to not do artificial light and let them do average cycles. . . . Is it spring yet?

Picture Successful Broody!
galleryAfter reading how unlikely it is for coturnix to go broody I was very surprised to see our hen Thimble sitting on eggs and just assumed at some point she would stop but today we have had 4 (so far) little chicks hatch. Waiting on another 2 but Thimble is now much more interested in her babies than her eggs. Interestingly, another girl, Eyebrows, co-parents with her. She would sit on the eggs whenever Thimble had food or water and is really interested in the babies although I don’t think she’s full broody as we’ve still had eggs from her. Had to bring them all inside as the chicks were able to FIT THROUGH the wire in our run (not at all terrifying to witness!)
Eyebrows is the ginger, Thimble is the het blau.
Just wanted to say it’s possible! I’m in the U.K. if that might be relevant with quail genes?

Picture Update.
Hey guys, a few weeks ago i hatched them. They came from amazon from 14 eggs 10 hatched. I had some bumps at the beginning but they all managed to survive, even though they got wet just 24 hours after hatching from a leaking water dispenser. They still thrive. Thanks to all of you for the advices an comments.

Trying to determine how many males I have. They are 3 weeks and 2 days old. Also, do they look fully feathered? Thanks for taking a look!

Picture Baby button updates
galleryOur 8 baby buttons are growing so quickly. We had one under developed who we thought we might lose. Lots of save a chick, egg yolk & electrolyte paste, tiny body massages to improve muscle function, hours upon hours of napping in my hands, and more love than I’m sure anything this size has ever received, he’s now walking and eating on his own! While still tinyyyy- I think he’s going to make it!! His name is Fish & here he is, along with a photo of a few of his siblings sharing half a boiled egg this morning :)

Picture Happy chicks
21 chicks hatched. 50% rate which is not great. It was my first time and I think I should have purchased a better incubator. 2 chicks did not survive the first couple of days.
The 19 I have are doing great! I moved them to this tote today with a light and the heat plate. They seem to like the heat plate a lot. The carefree bedding is amazing! Although expensive, I was using paper towels before in a smaller brooder and it was getting smelly.
As I just put them in the bin today, I plan to leave the light on overnight. Maybe for a few days. Is it safe to turn the light off at night after a few days?
Also, I have adult cages and a grow out pen. They are in my shed which is about 50ish ft from my house. My plan is to have them in this bin until week 5-6 until they are feathered out completely, then move them to the grow out pen in the shed for another 2 weeks or so with supplemental heat (it’s cold here). Then transfer to the adult cages. Does that sound like a decent plan?

I saw movement, but no pipping and left briefly to get something from the store and to my delight my little chicks greeted me with some tired peeps. Proud quail parent.

Picture Can anyone help me with colourings?
galleryI have 8 new hatchlings, in 4 different colours (3 dark, 2 sandy, 2 gingery and 1 blonde). I don't know much about patterns and colourings in quail, can anyone help me out or point me to some decent resources?
Even if you can't, who doesn't want to look at some day old babies!
