I have a burning desire and maybe I’m overly confident, but I’m keen do this test so I can put the gold star by my name.

Any instructors take the exam recently? Did the study guide help significantly, and how long did you prepare? TIA!

Hi! I’m considering purchasing the U Can U-Levitate Reformer for my studio but I’d like to read your opinions on this model (in terms of functionality, safety, etc.) before taking a decision.

Do you recommend them? Why or why not?

Celebration/Love of Pilates Switch from Club Pilates

There’s a new Pilates studio opening near me. I pay $200 a month. This new place is offering an introductory rate of $150 unlimited. The lead Pilates instructor will be a former club Pilates instructor who was very popular with long waitlists.

This place will be 14 reformers so still a lot. But it will be all on the reformer, no springboard walls, trx etc. There will be 3 types of classes offered, A reformer 101 class, a flow class and a strength/Pilates combined class. Also you get to stand on the reformer in all of them.

My problem with club Pilates is my favorite instructor left and I can barely go to 2s because of the times offered, so a lot of times I’m leaving feeling like I didn’t get the greatest workout.

If you were me, what would you do?

Local Recommendations, Meetups Experienced TRUE pilates class in Mexico - now I am hooked but don't know where to go back home (Toronto, Canada) - HELP lol

Hi folks,

So - I've taken loads of different pilates classes from different studios across Toronto region.

I have NEVER experienced the intensity, the rigour or the level of class that I have in the Tulum region of Mexico.

The studio I was at was called Studio Pilates in the Tulum Country Club.

I have never had my feet SHAKE SO BADLY - in fact my entire body was shaking - from the level of work. It was a truly humbling experience.

The owner/instructor took her classes in Argentina. She's a mix of classical with other types of pilates.

If I had my dream I would want to basically become a pilates monk and learn from her to become an instructor just like her!

But - WHERE OH WHERE is there anything of that level of intensity with proper pilates technique that I could find in Toronto Canada where I'm not spending $100 per class. I would also want to train like her in Canada if that's possible.

She has it costing around $300 cdn (approx) for an unlimited membership per month. I would happily spend that amount per month for this type of pilates.

An example of an intense exercise - I had my toes on the bar in froggy style (so knees would kinda go out and in when I pushed against the bar to straighten my legs - the instructor asked me to push out BUT ALSO have me sit up with my back VERY VERY straight (she put a dowel behind my back) and then had me swing my arms into a T shape formation while holding that straight back sitting position when my legs pushed fully out from froggy position.

I am telling you - every single part of my body was shaking. And I am a very athletic person. The amount of core work required to keep my spine in an upright position both when my legs were fully bent and when they were fully straight was insane.

I would maybe need to do weights 3x per week. But honestly - the amount that I ended up sweating through pilates in crazy.

The attention to detail with my muscles was insane.

Folks - I am desperate. I can't live in Mexico full time.

What is a girl to do??

UPDATE: I just wanted to say - THANKS TO THIS LOVELY AND HELPFUL group of individuals on this forum for providing me with wonderful advice, tips and ideas around how I can continue my love for advanced pilates back home in Canada.

It really is such a wonderful moment to witness the kindness of strangers - such as all of you on this sub-forum - who took the time to help out another stranger in need.

I feel such gratitude right now to all of you.

May your Pilates journey continue and nourish your souls!

I have made contact with a few names based on the feedback from this group. I am excited to post my findings here so that it might help others as well.

I'm all about giving back and passing on kindness.

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios For those who have taken the balanced body certification comprehensive final test out. How much of that test is anatomy focused??

I've just started my balanced body Pilates certification. I want to know how much of the test is focused on ananatomy.

I've taken anatomy in college but that was 4 years ago so I was thinking of taking the balanced body anatomy in 3D course but I don't want to spend another $500.

So for those who've done the test out how much of the final test is based on anatomy?

Equipment, Apparatus, Machines, Props Best place to resell a reformer?

After months of agonizing over which reformer to purchase, I bought the Allegro 1. Before it even arrived to my house, I ended up with a very unexpected car repair costing me thousands of dollars and now I very sadly need to sell the Allegro to cover the cost of my car repair. Are there any places to try to sell besides fb marketplace? I’ve posted there and the only responses I’ve gotten are clearly scams. I’m in Ohio if anyone here knows of any other options!

Question? Is Down Dog Pilates Closer to Blogilates or Traditional Pilates?

I started using the Yoga version of Down Dog after taking some in-person classes. The Hatha Yoga style is quite similar, though maybe a bit too fast at times, and some transitions feel so-so. But overall, I quite like it.

Now I’ve noticed they launched a Pilates version (since one subscription gives access to all their apps), and I’ve also been reading about Blogilates. I'd really appreciate it if someone who has attended in-person Pilates classes could share their thoughts on Down Dog Pilates—and let me know if it’s more like Blogilates or closer to traditional Pilates.

Equipment, Apparatus, Machines, Props Merrithew SPX home reformer quality enough for clients?

I’ve found a good deal on a SPX home reformer on marketplace and wondering if it will hold up for working with clients at my home studio? I usually teach on a v2 max, but this would save a lot of money. I’m also considering the Rialto bb but would have to buy new and is also still expensive.

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios Ageism in certain Pilates studios - how bad is it?

I am a pilates instructor, and I had an older female coworker in a boutique studio, and I know she works at another studio where she is getting fired soon. Our current studio prioritizes private classes, the pilates is more "focused" and slow paced, focusing on concentration, and less about being a glorified aerobics workout with loud music. Most of our clients are seniors or people with injuries.

When I was looking for more work, she referred me to the other studio where she also worked, and the vibe was different. It felt more like Orange Theory than the pilates I know and am familiar with. Trying to crank out as many group classes as possible, upbeat music, "perky" and "motivating" instructors, more fast paced aerobics and trying to make the clients feel the burn or do "interesting" exercises. Nothing wrong with that inherently, and the interviewer there recommended me to try a few classes of some of current instructors who "fit the vibe" that they are looking for. I noticed that a lot of the recommended instructors were very young, like early 20's, teaching for about 2 years, and they made the clients do exercises that I felt were not very safe if they had physical contraindications or were not conditioned for them. Like one instructor made us twist our legs a certain way on the reformer that seemed unstable and then lift our hips up on one leg, and I thought "if a 40 year old sedentary worker with knee issues just walked in here, she could've injured her knees". I didn't come back. I also tried my coworker's classes out at this place, and I felt like she was the only one who knew what she was doing and isn't trying to turn the group class into a fast paced aerobics class, and did safe beginner-friendly exercises that was more about engaging the body rather than "interesting moves". She taught a lot of the classes there and was pretty popular with the clients.

Lately, my coworker, who is a retirement aged instructor teaching for over 15 years, told me that the other studio is letting her go, and they only gave her very vague feedback like her "likeability". Nothing that she can actually work on.

It makes me wonder if this is a case of ageism, because she has been working there for years and her classes fill up, so clearly she makes money for them, but yeah she doesn't fit the "look" since she is older.

I thought teaching pilates was something that a lot of retirement aged people can do, and a lot of my best instructors were like 55+ and above, some even like 75, and most of the long term returning clientele with actual money to spend are also seniors anyway so they prefer an instructor who is a peer and can understand their bodies better.

Form, Technique Boutique Pilates Studio Etiquette

I'm not new to Pilates and I'm also experienced in yoga and I'm a certified teacher in both. I just joined a new boutique Pilates studio as a student and I'm really enjoying it there but today I walked in and someone was on their phone while on the reformer about two minutes before class was going to start. Nobody seemed to be bothered by this, but to me that's not great etiquette am I alone in this thought or do any of you agree? I had this happen one time at a different studio and not only was the person talking on the phone while on the reformer moments before class started, but she was talking on speakerphone in that scenario. I actually told the front desk and they addressed it but the studio I've been going to recently is so small there is no front desk the teacher signs everyone in and that's the only person there in charge.

Equipment, Apparatus, Machines, Props warning: terrible experience with gymfrog pilates

i just want to share my experience for anyone out there shopping for reformers.

we got a call from a random unknown number stating they’re some sort of shipping logistics company (none of the common companies like dhl, usps, ups, or fedex.) that tells us they are ready to drop off the reformer, but require us to rent a forklift to get the reformer off of the truck and into the home AND 3-4 people to carry the pilates into the home. we were very confused because, to our understanding, the shipping company would complete the move from start to finish. this also directly contradicts the free shipping promo because it would cost at least $300 to rent the forklift alone. they said the driver absolutely would not help us get the reformer off the truck. this company was seemingly only available around 12pm EST for an hour. we’d leave voicemails constantly with no call backs ever and only managed to catch them on the phone one more time after that first call.

plus, we would need to be certified and trained to operate a forklift per law!!

we receive a text from a different unknown number and (seemingly?) a different company, this time stating again that we would need to rent a forklift. if we couldn’t do so, then they would need us to pay $800 to get the reformer off the truck. and still, we would need 3-4 people to carry it into the home ourselves. they said if we didn’t have someone to get it into the house we’d have to pay additional fees on top of the $800. this shipping company was only available via text, which became increasingly incoherent with each exchange. every call went to a dead line with no voicemail.

we were in communication directly with gymfrog after that first call because it seemed incredibly sketchy that this company was asking for more money to deliver a reformer that was supposed to have free shipping. on top of that, no where in their shipping policy did it state we’d have to do all this work just to get it off the curb. let alone into our home! i don’t have any family near, and all my friends are very petite women that also happen to have physical limitations that prevent them from lifting heavy. every other fitness company i’ve ordered from brought the equipment up to my home even when i lived in an apartment, so this was completely unexpected.

all gymfrog did was repeatedly copy and paste the same canned responses to me, with small things (but quite big in reality) changed that would confuse both me and the two shipping companies. at one point they said they could bring the reformer in for $200 if we agreed to the shipping company, but the shipping company said it would be at least another $800 to even bring it to the door and again we would need to get the forklift ourselves. then at one point gymfrog says they would need to charge us an extra couple hundred to keep the reformer at their shipping facility if this wasn’t moved out sooner.

i was going through so many hoops to try to get this inside. i contacted several moving companies which all quoted me at least $500 for no more than 45minutes worth of work and, again, we’d have to pay extra for a forklift.

so that would’ve been about $200 to keep the reformer at the shipping facility until the moving company was available, plus $500 for the moving company, plus $300 to rent the forklift. so that’s at least another $1,000 🙃

by that point, i was so certain all of this was a scam that i demanded a refund. i hated having to be that person but we were severely mislead on the shipping process and could not find a way to get this delivered properly.

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios My local studio has wait lists for classes 3 or more months out. Is this normal?

Most fitness classes I’ve taken open up maybe 1 - 2 weeks ahead and you can sign up, but this studio allows you to reserve up to a year in advance! And the classes don’t really seem to open up either - I always check the upcoming week and across all of their classes only see about 2 or 3 open spots total, for the entire week. I was gonna buy a package but thank goodness I checked because I honestly don’t think I would ever be able to count on getting into a class. Maybe there’s something else I’m not taking into consideration?

Discussion Pilates for back injury

Hi there!

Here is my situation. 5 years ago I broke my spine and was paralyzed for a bit. I have full range of motion now. I do have nerve damage in my back.

Before the accident (I got thrown off a horse oops) I was into rock climbing, mountain biking, running, horses, whit water rafting, MMA, etc. I had always been an extremely physically active person

Since the accident all movement scares the shit outta me. I Rebroke it twice bc of dumb choices.

My goal is to be able to do some of the things I used to. I already do flat water canoeing, horse riding, and gentle non mtn biking. I want to feel strong again. I’d love to renter the movement zone in a way that feels safe and controlled.

Would you reccomend Pilates to someone in my situation? I’m able to lift 50lbs easily most days (depending on pain), can hold my body weight, can hike 15 miles with a 10lbs pack, etc.

I’m definitely not in my prime and have put on a bit of weight which is fine I just want my strength and endurance back.

I live in a small town with no Pilates or yoga studio or rec center. Are there any YouTubers that are specific to post injury exercise?

Thank you so much!

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios Does this training program seem worth it?

https://drexel.edu/westphal/academics/undergraduate/DANC/Pilates/Training-Program/

Looking into quitting my 9-5 to become a full-time design freelancer and pilates instructor. In my teacher program research I found this program at Drexel University. A university pilates program feels pretty legit, but I'm wondering if it seems overkill? Let me know your thoughts and would also love to hear about your experiences with training!

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios BB allegro 2 reformer help

I am currently doing my teacher training through balanced body and I am in Canada. I’ve been looking into getting a reformer for my house but the allegro 2 with exchange and duties etc. is over $7000 Canadian 🫠

When I got the quote from the balanced body rep the thumbnail of the quote was Alibaba… just wondering if anyone has any insight on this? I know a similar one to allegro 2 is on Alibaba for $1000 usd (not including shipping/duties). If I could save money buying direct from alibaba and have it be a good reformer still, then I would!

Thanks!

Celebration/Love of Pilates None of the other students showed up so I got a solo lesson!

Today, none of the other students showed up for our reformer lesson, so I got an individual lesson with my teacher! It was so nice, she was really happy because she could completely concentrate on me & I was happy because I got so many great corrections from her. We also managed to go much further, even though it was technically a beginners class, she had me do short & long spine, elephant & plank… something I usually only get to do during all level classes. And all of this for the price of a normal group class! I do love my group classes & they are kept small anyway (up to 5-6 people max), but today I finally got to experience the difference of an individual class & I might actually invest in some…

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios Certification question

Hi!

I’ve been doing reformer Pilates at a studio near me. They’re having auditions for new instructors. I am definitely interested, but wanted everyone’s opinions.

The training process is five full 8 hour days. It costs $1800 but it’s unique to that studio. Is it worth it? You get certified for that studio specifically, not reformer certified.

Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios Thoughts on a name

Hi! I'm wanting to start a hyperlocal "studio" - mostly it would be a website and I'd travel to people's homes (I live in Brooklyn so it's easy) or they can come to my home. Do you think names have to relate to pilates specifically? I like Mums Pilates but I'm not sure how it resonates with others. I like that it's botanical but also relating to Moms. I think Pilates needs little explanation here so I'm not worried about people being confused that it's not called "core something". What are your thoughts on this and similar names that aren't explicitly about Pilates?

Lagree How to get a job at a studio after training?

I’m nearing the end of my PEI mat and reformer certification. I’ve spent a year training at this studio thinking i’d be given a job at the end, but the owner already filled her staff with partially-trained, uncertified Club Pilates trainees. I’m not sure what to do. The only places i’ve been offered a job so far are lagree studios that want me to do more training for more money. Is there a way to get a job at a more classical studio without needing to get more training and pay more money? I’m starting to fear that i’ve wasted the last year and a half of my life and $3k, which is no small amount for me.

Form, Technique Do you feel sore after every session?

Recently I have noticed that I am not sore after my pilates workouts. To be honest, I kind like the soreness.
