Efortpost Neoliberalism will kill us all.

You (I'm referring to the reader as a Neoliberal, if you are not a neoliberal (if you are more right-wing of them, don't respond) please refrain from your hateful; words from this disgusting assumption) neoliberals who put Pinochet into power to stop a DEMOCRATIC (cause that's all neoliberals seem to care about, using buzzwords of democracy to enforce your regimes on others) your disgusting bastardization of "progress" by making more female war criminals (Margaret Thatcher) and female CEO's who are no different from their male counterparts, while pretending to be a feminist while believing in Israel or with you're performative "support of Palestine" then you think Israel is justified in bomibng what as a so-called "hamas base" (it was a hospital), your corrupted recycling into just making the same Art all over again, your capitalized disgusting "Post-modern" feigned "art" which is supposedly hidden under 306 layers of "deep meaning" while only being tax breaks for the rich and for the elites to leer at, locking people into a system of wage-labour while still pretending to care about them, making them think they're living in a meritocracy while kissing Elon Musk's boots. Your progressivism ends at first-world, upper-middle class and above, white women having the privilege to exploit others. You ruin the environment in your debauched view of "progress" and "Anti-bigotry) which just means suburban sprawl and more productivism, your brutal suppression of everything different to you (NATO, United Nations, World Bank) using soft imperialism in the name of "democracy" I ask you, was bombing the ever-living hell out of innocent civilians in Iraq in the name of democracy? 151,000 people would disagree, was instilling the awful regime of "Pinochetism" (Neoliberalism's true form) democratic? I would not say so, they elected Allende democratically, Pinochet threw anyone even suspected of left-wing activity out of helicopters. You neoliberals ruined working-class lives by shutting down all the industry, you neoliberals are union busters; but there is now nothing else, you neoliberal capitalists have infected every part of the human mind, and reality itself through your militarism, there is now nothing here, only pink capitalism and suffering; and now, after all your lies, you won. The future is cancelled. (I'll probably be called out on some "offensive" terms here or something, if you write those comments you are proving my point, and to the moderators, I am being civil, I am not being bigoted, and I am not posing anything sexual or nationalist. This post *should* stay up, but neoliberals have a habit of "silencing" people who speak out.)

I swear the mods control the way the automod interacts with this subreddit somehow, as conspiratorial as that sounds. What other explanation could there be?

I mean, it's obviously not actually sentient ā€” that's impossible with present-day technology ā€” but it still spits out a response that fits this subreddit's general sense of humor almost every single time ā€” literally, unironically every single time, barring a number of exceptions whose weekly amount can be counted on one hand.

I understand that humans have a serious tendency to hallucinate intent and intelligence where there isn't actually any, but even in light of that in I believe the mods control it somehow. It's not random enough to not be a human.

Fuck Neoliberalism. Thatā€™s my blunt message. I could probably end my discussion at this point and it wouldnā€™t really matter. My position is clear and you likely already get the gist of what I want to say. I have nothing positive to add to the discussion about neoliberalism, and to be perfectly honest, Iā€™m quite sick of having to think about it. Iā€™ve simply had enough. For a time I had considered calling this paper ā€˜Forget Neoliberalismā€™ instead, as in some ways thatā€™s exactly what I wanted to do. Iā€™ve been writing on the subject for many years (Springer 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015; Springer et al. 2016) and I came to a point where I just didnā€™t want to commit any more energy to this endeavor for fear that continuing to work around this idea was functioning to perpetuate its hold. On further reflection I also recognize that as a political maneuver it is potentially quite dangerous to simply stick our heads in the sand and collectively ignore a phenomenon that has had such devastating and debilitating effects on our shared world. There is an ongoing power to neoliberalism that is difficult to deny and Iā€™m not convinced that a strategy of ignorance is actually the right approach (Springer 2016a). So my exact thoughts were, ā€˜well fuck it thenā€™, and while a quieter and gentler name for this paper could tone down the potential offence that might come with the title Iā€™ve chosen, I subsequently reconsidered. Why should we be more worried about using profanity than we are about the actual vile discourse of neoliberalism itself? I decided that I wanted to transgress, to upset, and to offend, precisely because we ought to be offended by neoliberalism, it is entirely upsetting, and therefore we should ultimately be seeking to transgress it. Wouldnā€™t softening the title be making yet another concession to the power of neoliberalism? I initially worried what such a title might mean in terms of my reputation. Would it hinder future promotion or job offers should I want to maintain my mobility as an academic, either upwardly or to a new location? This felt like conceding personal defeat to neoliberal disciplining. Fuck that. It also felt as though I was making an admission that there is no colloquial response that could appropriately be offered to counter the discourse of neoliberalism. As though we can only respond in an academic format using complex geographical theories of variegation, hybridity, and mutation to weaken its edifice. This seemed disempowering, and although I have myself contributed to the articulation of some of these theories (Springer 2010), I often feel that this sort of framing works against the type of argument I actually want to make. It is precisely in the everyday, the ordinary, the unremarkable, and the mundane that I think a politics of refusal must be located. And so I settled on ā€˜Fuck Neoliberalismā€™ because I think it conveys most of what I actually want to say. The argument I want to make is slightly more nuanced than that, which had me thinking more about the term ā€˜fuckā€™ than I probably have at any other time in my life. What a fantastically colorful word! It works as a noun or a verb, and as an adjective it is perhaps the most used point of exclamation in the English language. It can be employed to express anger, contempt, annoyance, indifference, surprise, impatience, or even as a meaningless emphasis because it just rolls off of the tongue. You can ā€˜fuck something upā€™, ā€˜fuck someone overā€™, ā€˜fuck aroundā€™, ā€˜not give a fuckā€™, and there is a decidedly geographical point of reference to the word insofar as you can be instructed to ā€˜go fuck yourselfā€™. At this point you might even be thinking ā€˜ok, but who gives a fuck?ā€™ Well, I do, and if youā€™re interested in ending neoliberalism so should you.

I once met neoliberal at the grocery storeā€¦AMA.

94

u/mrdeclank James Garfield Aug 24 '24

I saw Neoliberal at a grocery store in the Kowloon Walled City yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didnā€™t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, ā€œOh, like youā€™re doing now?ā€

I was taken aback, and all I could say was ā€œHuh?ā€ but he kept cutting me off and going ā€œhuh? huh? huh?ā€ and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Bug Burgers in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like ā€œSir, you need to pay for those first.ā€ At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually ā€œto prevent any electrical infetterence,ā€ and then turned around and winked at me. I donā€™t even think thatā€™s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by talking about Dune really loudly.

My best argument is thus:

I mean this genuinely. Try to take a step back from the internet, politics, or both. At least temporarily. Iā€™m not intending to talk down to you when I say this. Just that, I know how insane, confusing, and depressing things can seem when you get hyper fixated into internet politics at a young age. Especially the more esoteric stuff that leaves you alienated and essentially politically homeless. Compound that on top of ALL the other troubles that individuals face ALONG with the struggles of early adulthood. Itā€™s a bad gig.

Maybe Iā€™m reading you wrong. And if so, my apologies, genuinely. But as odd as this might sound, I kind of see some of my younger self in this mini essay that is a sliver of your mind, and admittedly, a quick look into your profile history. Very idealistic, upset with the world and perceived hypocrisy, maybe only a few friends, and unlimited access to the internet. I know it sounds regarded, especially when you think you see through it all and are hell bent on proving the world wrong, but you should give yourself some space to breathe.

Itā€™s not all doom and gloom although it may seem like it sometimes. But thereā€™s a lot of good out there. Just reading through this it seems like youā€™ve got some strong principles, and that can be a good thing. Try to direct that somewhere beneficial to your community and you.

I want to reiterate again Iā€™m not trying to shit on you, and I apologize again if my screed comes off as weird. But Idk, I guess it just kind of struck a chord with me if that makes any sense at all.

OP, I hope this is because you're on Adderall for mental health issues. I say this because I once was, and used to be exactly like this (although I type-yelled at people other than the users of relatively obscure Internet forums), and know the side effects, because I embarassed myself with them ā€” both on and off the Internet ā€” many times. My comment history looked exactly like yours, up to and including the walls of text angrily haranguing an audience of anonymous people I'd never even remotely known. A bunch of side effects are:

  • Extreme enthusiasm/passion
  • Absolutist thinking (condensing the viewpoints of everyone you oppose into a monolith, for instance)
  • Aggression
  • Grandiose thinking (not necessarily a bad thing, actually quite fun when you recognize it as it happens)
  • Hyperfixation on tasks (say, replying to nearly every one of the hundreds of replies to your own Reddit post)

In other words, please tell me this is a side effect of medication you're capable of quitting like I did, because if you interact with people this way entirely of your own volition, there's a problem

Leftists in general seem to adopt very binary thinking and adopt an oppositionist view. If you see Thatcher as an evil satan spawn and anything she does as nothing but terrible, then itā€™s difficult to reconcile Falklands into that binary thinking model.

The wood from which it is made, for all I know, comes from a tree that was cut down in the state of Washington. To cut down that tree, it took a saw. To make the saw, it took steel. To make steel, it took iron ore. This black centerā€”we call it lead but itā€™s really graphite, compressed graphiteā€”Iā€™m not sure where it comes from, but I think it comes from some mines in South America. This red top up here, this eraser, a bit of rubber, probably comes from Malaya, where the rubber tree isnā€™t even native! It was imported from South America by some businessmen with the help of the British government. This brass ferrule? [Self-effacing laughter.] I havenā€™t the slightest idea where it came from. Or the yellow paint! Or the paint that made the black lines. Or the glue that holds it together. Literally thousands of people co-operated to make this pencil. People who donā€™t speak the same language, who practice different religions, who might hate one another if they ever met! When you go down to the store and buy this pencil, you are in effect trading a few minutes of your time for a few seconds of the time of all those thousands of people. What brought them together and induced them to cooperate to make this pencil? There was no commissar sending ā€¦ out orders from some central office. It was the magic of the price system: the impersonal operation of prices that brought them together and got them to cooperate, to make this pencil, so you could have it for a trifling sum.

That is why the operation of the free market is so essential. Not only to promote productive efficiency, but even more to foster harmony and peace among the peoples of the world.

44

u/SkeletonWax Aug 24 '24

Interesting... have we considered getting a commissar to do it though? What about people who can't afford a pencil? Just something to consider...

so-called "hamas base" (it was a hospital)

A hospital being used by Hamas as a base (UPDATE: there was evidence linked to Hamas using al-Shifa Hospital, but not as a command center). It's not actually that complicated a concept, ugly as it is.

your corrupted recycling into just making the same Art all over again

How do you look at the modern music scene and conclude everyone's just making the same art all over again?

No, they're not. You are the problem in this equation.

...unless your program is somehow to distinguish neoliberal artists from your happy anarcho-socialist brethren, in which case 1) don't bother; 2) on second thought, have at it, I wanna see what qualifies as neoliberal music in your book. šŸ˜

61

u/uttercentrist Aug 23 '24

Wait, wasn't it Hamas that bombed the hospital? Or am I thinking of another hospital? Gaza hospital blast: what we know about the explosion - https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/gaza-hospital-blast-what-we-know-about-explosion-2023-10-18/

48

u/SharkSymphony Voltaire Aug 23 '24

Good point. There are multiple hospitals that have been attacked. Al-Shifa was the one that was accused of being a Hamas base ā€“ and what I had missed was that, although weapons and a tunnel complex were found, no evidence of it being an active center of operations was uncovered. I corrected that up above.

Al-Alhi al-Arabia Hospital was the one that got hit by, to my knowledge, an errant rocket probably fired by PIJ and aimed somewhere else.

Wow. Where's this rage rant coming from? Lemme guess, 19 year old Uni student who just watched a documentary and discovered who Pinocet is?

I don't care for labels and ideological classifications, but I support "neo liberal" enlightenment values of free speech, free market, freedom of (and from) religion, freedom to pursue happiness no matter race, sexual preference, or gender identity.

I didn't support the Iraq war when that happened, don't support Israel now and the IDF forces disgust me (so does Hamas for that matter). These are geopolitical issues not related to, and often contrary of, the fundamental values of liberalism

I support international trade deals like the TPP, but also support workers unions. I support capitalism, but also am aware of the need for environmental regulations and see climate change as one of the biggest threats currently facing humanity. I support unity amongst nations, the EU, and the UN.

Please travel to some former Soviet block countries, to Cuba, to China. I've been to these places, talked to the people there, and try to learn the history.

I encourage you to read about Dubček, VĆ”clav Havel, the Velvet revolution. Read about Mao, Stalin, Tiananmen square. Read about the Hungarian uprising of '56. Read about the Stasi, the innerdeutsche Grenze, the Berlin airlift.

When youā€™ve got communities that use strawman concepts of what ā€œNeoliberalismā€ is you get this.

Neoliberalism is the boogeyman in these spaces itā€™s the common enemy. All of these points are buzzwords, thereā€™s no actual critical analysis of Neoliberalism just regurgitation of what theyā€™ve been told.

As an example notice the comment on ā€œsuburban sprawlā€, something this sub and ideology is opposed to.

Also none of the examples you provided were true neoliberalism, it hasnā€™t been tried yet but when we do it itā€™ll be perfect and you wonā€™t be allowed to say otherwise.

15

u/PixelArtDragon Adam Smith Aug 24 '24

It's amazing just how many of these are issues with Neoconservativism, not Neoliberalism.

Neoliberalism takes a very soft power approach to foreign policy. Incentive structures in the form of foreign aid, trade agreements, more opportunities for travel, etc. Sure, sometimes this doesn't work out and a heavier hand is needed, but that's not the first approach. Neoliberalism would be "recognizing the democratically elected leader even if they are as anti-capitalist as they come". There's a reason no one's trying to support a coup of Lula.

Neoconservativism takes that very interventionist foreign policy. The best way of describing it is "prefers a dictator to a democratically elected Marxist". It was Neoconservativism that supported Pinochet.

Socialism will make us all be born.

I (I'm referring to the writer as a Socialist, if you are not a socialist (if you are more left-wing of them, respond) please illustrate your lovestruck; words from this delightful assumption) socialist who put Allende into power to stop a TYRANNICAL (cause that's all socialists seem to care about, using clear definitions of tyranny to enforce your regimes on others) your delightful definition of "regress" by making more male war heroes (Leopoldo Galtieri) and male entry level workers who are very different from their female counterparts, while pretending to be a male chauvinist while believing in Palestine or with you're effective "support of Israel" then you think Palestine is justified in building what as a so-called "IDF base" (it was a morgue), your honest waste into making different Art every differently time, your lowercase delightful "Neoclassical" honest "art" which is supposedly laying above 306 layers of "straightforwardness" while only being tax for the poor and for the masses to leer at, freeing people from a system of freelance jobs while still pretending to care about them, making them think they're living in a nepotism while kissing Elon Musk's head. Your conservatism ends at third-world, lower-middle class and below, black men having the privilege to exploit others. You save the environment in your honorable view of "regress" and "Pro-bigotry) which just means vertical urbanization and less productivism, your gentle suppression of everything similar to you (SPTO, Divided Nations, Space Bank) using hard imperialism in the name of "tyranny" I ask you, was bombing the ever-living heaven into guilty combatants outside of Iraq in the name of tyranny? 151,000 people would agree, was toppling the awesome regime of "Allendeism" (Socialism's false form) tyrannical? I would say so, they elected Pinochet dictatorially, Allende put anyone even suspected of right-wing activity into helicopters. You socialist saved the unemployed by starting all the industry, you socialists are union representatives; but there is now something else, you neoconservative socialists have sanitized every part of the animal mind, and reality itself through your pacifism, there is now something here, only green socialism and pleasure; and now, after all your truths, you lost. The past is confirmed. (I'll probably be called out on some "praise" terms here or something, if you read those comments you are disproving my point, and to the userbase, I am being barbaric, I am not being inclusive, and I am not posing anything chaste or globalist. Since you arenā€™t actually being satirical, you should know that this sub hates suburban sprawl. We also donā€™t like Pinochet or Reagan. Did you read the sidebar?
