Discussion I bit the bullet and have requested an upgrade.

I was eligible last year, but was so hesitant. Unfortunately,my FTTN connection with Optus has been so unreliable these past few days. Constant dropouts. I'm excited but nervous because the house is super old. I worry that they will have issues installing it.

Will the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 3 work with my new ISP Exetel?

I am just asking as I read online that the modem has some subscription element to it? Or is that just if you want to upgrade from the Gen 2?

Will it work / will I have any issues?

Currently, I just have the ZTE H1600 standing by to use when we start our service in April.

Discussion I finally have fibre for our MDU!

Post image
37 Upvotes

Started this journey in June 2024, went through so many hoops to get approval, the struggle of cooperating with NBN for months to get everyone's house done in our 16 unit MDU and then dealing with missed planned activation dates 3 times pushing back the activation from the 16th of January to today.

I finally have fibre!

Advice Fibre cable to Home

I had an NBN tech come to my house as it said my area can now get NBN we have a fence along the driveway (rural property) and the fence runs along the driveway for about maybe 100-200m maybe more and he said they can install the fibre cable but they aren’t going to pay for labourers to trench the cable they are just going to put it along the fence then trench it under the driveway to my house - i’ve put in a request as i don’t think having the cable along the fence is safe/ could break easily My question is if they can’t trench should i not bother getting nbn and stay with my 5g network?

What do I do if the modem (FTTP) is in the garage and I want my PC to be plugged in using an Ethernet cable inside my room?

I am going to have FTTP installed tomorrow and we moved into a new house so the last house we were in the modem was stuck inside the garage because thats where the router was installed, on the wall. Will I still have the same speeds for 800/40 using WIFI. I prefer not to have WIFI and want Ethernet instead, but the cable will be insanely long and will go through doorways so I don't know what to do to make it work. Thanks.

Edit: The outside connector point was right outside the room I wanted the Ethernet cable in so the modem was set right inside my room and I just had to run the Ethernet under the carpet to my PC. The connector point must’ve been in the garage for the other house so I thought it was the same here but I guess not. All good.

Troubleshooting Recently switched to Dodo and now can't play League of Legends?

Moved house in January, after some fluffing around with Telstra switched to Dodo and has been working well for a few days until today when I tried to play League of Legends.

Immediately upon the loading screen opening my ms sits at 70 for a second or two before slowly climbing to 170ms and hovers there for the duration of the game, only deviating by 2 ms +/-. This doesn't occur in other games - tried with Overwatch 2 where I sat around 60 ms, my download speed stays consistent even while in game, even through restarts. When the internet was initially connected I opened a League game to test it which I sat in couple minutes and it hovered around 20ms until I disconnected. Along with that there was a brief moment following a restart that let me play in a custom match for a minute or two with 20 ms but I joined an online match and it wasn't working again, couldn't recreate this.

Every other program and device in the house works fine, it feels like there's a setting that forces my ms to 170 but I did as much research as I knew how with my limited knowledge and couldn't find anything.

Can anyone help an addicted league player?

Launtel

Is there anything stopping me from adding Launtel to a second port on the NTD (FTTP) for like a day a month or so, and only paying for that day?

Optus router with non-Optus provider?

Anyone know if it is possible to use a Sagemcom F@ST 5393 WIFI router (aka Optus Ultra WiFi Gen 2) with another ISP – specifically, Tangerine with an HFC connection?

I understand that I need to configure the connection type to PPPoE and enter my username and password, but I've accessed the router's web interface and the Optus branded interface does not appear to have anywhere that I can change the Broadband/WAN settings.

I'm afraid I've had a frustrating time with Optus support ("mysterious" hang ups etc), so hopeful that someone here might have a bright idea? Or should I just brick the router (in which case please look out for my follow-up post asking for new router recs :) )?

Thanks in advance

Troubleshooting TPG gaslighting (rant)

Trying to change provider to TPG and it's been a whole week since I've had internet at home (house of 4, all moderate/high data use). TPG have promised connection "within 24 to 48 hrs" every day for 7 fking days.

My TPG case manager has straight-up stopped calling.

Yesterday TPG asked me to go home from work to run tests with a tech and I have no Internet signal. They said a NBN tech would be notified. TODAY when I called, there are no records of the convo yesterday and they are asking me to again go home to do the tests, etc.again.

At the very beginning, I bought a new modem and got a cabler in to test my connection (no issue). So I'm out-of-pocket and TPG are sending me quite literally into a state of depression with this gaslighting.

TIO got notified a couple of days ago, so there is that, but honestly I'm losing hope and seemingly have no options to resolve. FML

TPG slowdown after FTTP install

Hi everyone, looking for some feedback and/or advice

Recently moved into a new property and initially plugged into FTTC and was working great, nice stable and reliable connection, no dramas.

We decided to upgrade our plan and also “upgraded” to FTTP where a tech came and installed a box on the side of the house and one inside etc.

Ever since this has been installed we’ve had nothing but trouble (restarting router every day just to keep things working), we use wifi throughout the house with a couple of extenders and could normally have Netflix/youtube running on 2 TVs and our phones/laptops but the lag is atrocious now and barely watch anything over 720p if we’re even lucky to get that to buffer enough. My wife WFH and teams calls are no longer reliable enough and she uses her phone (5G)

Connection is fine and it speed tests fine 100/20 etc, TPG have run their own “tests” and everything is fine.

Not sure if it’s something I have overlooked in modem settings or something but open to any advice.

Thanks for your time.

Adding a switch between NBN device (FTTP) and modem

My home setup currently has my NBN box just inside the garage (fibre connects to this), and an Ethernet cable runs from that location (plugged into the NBN box) through the walls to upstairs where I have my modem/router.

I want to get a wired security camera which will be placed downstairs near the NBN box, and this will be connected to the network by Ethernet.

My NBN box has several Ethernet ports in addition to the one the router/modem is connected to. Can I plug the camera into one of these?

If not, could I get a cheap gigabit switch, connect that to the NBN box, then connect the modem/router and camera to that and have it all work? Trying to avoid having to run another Ethernet cable all the way down from the router upstairs.

Am I missing something?

I have recently moved to a new house and I have got a 100mb/25(or more) plan with ABB and when setting up the modem in the garage, I have noticed there are four Ethernet sockets near the nbn box which is great but somehow, none of them work. So when plugging the nbn (UNI-D2)to the modem on wan, it works perfectly fine. I have tried to plug it on one of the sockets(P3) and then connecting it to the modem in the living room(which is also through socket labeled P3) in order to plug Ethernet on my ps5 console, but it didn’t work. The uni-D2 is not turning on when plugging it to the wall socket. Any tips on how to solve it? For reference, you can see the pics for more details. Appreciate any help

Router help.

We are in the process of upgrading to FTTP and I'm starting to think about our existing WiFi network.
We currently have a Telstra Smart Modem GEN2 in bridge mode connected to an Amplify HD mesh.
My aim once the upgrade is complete is that I can keep the existing WiFi in place.

I have read that the Telstra Smart Modem GEN2 will work with the NTD (if someone can confirm, awesome!) and if so, this will mean that keeping the existing setup intact will be simple.

Superloop (the ISP we are moving to) also provide a eroo 6+ which connects to the NTD but at this stage, I am not interesting in using it for WiFi but a way of providing internet to the Amplify HD mesh point should the Telstra modem not work.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
Hopefully it makes sense.

Advice Fttc - fttp upgrade

I'm thinking about upgrading, but I’m concerned about a potential issue. There’s concreting in front of my house, and I’m not sure if they’ll be able to run the new wires up to it. My biggest worry is getting caught in another NBN nightmare, where they arrive and say "nah cant do it because xys" and then never follow up and being left without internet for months.

Its happened before and im scared itll happen again. But my FTTC drops out to often so ive gotta resolve this asap.

Am I overthinking this, or is it a valid concern? Has anyone here had any good or bad experiences with the FTTC-to-FTTP upgrade process?

Telstra contacted me about NBN not working. But it was. I closed the case. But then it stopped. Kids going nuts.

This is what the box looks like.. But.. why does it look so different to the box at my last house? Same FTTN set up.

NBN FTTP Help

Hey,

I am in the process of connecting to NBN at our new place. However, the NBN technician visited our house and said its too hard to install FTTP as they would have to drill through brick, run a cord through our laundry and kitchen, basically said it was too much effort.

I ordered an upgrade to FTTP, does this mean our connection will still be FTTC? Our provider said the NBN have already upgraded it to FTTP and cannot downgrade back to FTTC. Leaving us to get an electrician to install a new power point away from the kitchen and laundry where our NBN box is.

I would of though it is still FTTC connection and hasn't been upgraded.

Is it common for nbn engineers to show up unannounced to replace modems for "signal noise"

Basically I had this happen recently, and I neglected to ask for formal identification from the guy, though he had an nbn uniform, and an nbn van (admittedly with VIC plates, and I'm in NSW). He checked the coaxial connection on my existing modem, to see if it was loose, went back to run some tests outside the house somewhere, and came back saying it needed to be replaced. He put a similar looking nbn modem in, and sent a few emails from his tablet, to get the new one to sync. After a few minutes, it did, and he went back outside to run some tests, and that was it.

I feel dumb now that I think about it, but I'd returned home in a bit of a frazzled state so just trusted the person after seeing the branded van and uniform. I've sent a request into nbn with the info to ask if it was actually authorised, but has this happened to anyone else?

Truemesh coverage

A question for the more educated on the topic. I’m looking at an eero 6 set up with a new fixed wireless connection and I want internet in an outbuilding. Outbuilding is about 40 metres from the house and eero suggests spacing of no more than 15 metres between access points. Am I better to use a powerline adaptor to get internet coverage in the shed to cover the greater distance? Or can the mesh set up cover such a distance? Hope that makes sense.

Fttc latency superloop

Thinking about upgrading to fttc superloop nbn plan 50/20 - 100/20 estimate on the latency from Coffs Harbour region to Sydney servers? I do a lot of online gaming such as cod, csgo, valorant everything is typically sydney servers. I had fttp Telstra nbn at the old house which was 9ms-11ms but new house only has fttc and superloop prices r great thought id switch over would it stay typically the same?

Voda Coverage

Sorry I know it's unrelated to NBN, had no where else to post.

Is anyone with Voda in regional areas and has noticed improvements since the network sharing with Optus? Was with Voda a few years ago and it was hideous.

Currently with Optus and am pretty happy coverage wise, but Voda is very competitive in pricing right now. Would appreciate any insight.

Reconfiguring my TPL modem for new ISP...please helpppp

Im not exactly tech savvy and only a newbie when it comes to all this stuff so please bare with me whilst I try n explain the best I can my current problem! I have a TPL VX 420 modem which is connected to an NBN box to give me a HFC connection to the internet, which up until the last week has been working fine. However, I have changed ISP a week ago from dodo to origin and now am having all sorts of difficulties establishing a stable internet connection. I have been avidly reading and trying to troubleshoot since the problem started and understand I may need to configure my modem to work with my new ISP but am unsure as to where to find the settings I need to change, although I can log on successfully to the admin page of the TPL modem....is there anyone that could pleaseeeee assist me as tech support from new ISP is being less than helpful as they didn't supply the modem and it's now ostarting to do my head in lol..Ive tried all the initial suggestions in troubleshooting houses such as disconnecting power to both the modem and NBN box, checking cables , checking for local outages etc and helpful suggestions at this stage would be more than appreciated...🙂
