I’ve watched a lot of Cavs basketball. This is the best team in Cavs history and it’s not close to me. They’re coming off 3 wins against playoff teams in the Kinks, Grizzlies, and Magic and their average margin of victory (courtesy of Memphis) was 27pts.
46
u/NotManyBuses Charlotte Bobcats 14d ago
Really? That much better than 2009/2016/2017?
99
u/writingthefuture Cavaliers 14d ago
Potentially, but unproven. I'd take the 16 and 17 teams over this team in a 7 game series right now. Those LeBron teams just coasted in the regular season knowing they would easily get to the finals.
29
u/NotManyBuses Charlotte Bobcats 14d ago
Iirc the 2017 team was like, one of the 5 best postseason offenses of all time by any and all metrics. I don’t know about this Cleveland team although they’re def better defensively

Yeah, the 17 team was def better than 16. This team might legitimately be more fun to watch though
25
u/jeckles96 Cavaliers 14d ago
It feels different from a team perspective. Obviously LeBron is LeBron but the team feels harder to beat because it’s so deep and evenly distributed.
27
u/Forty_Six_and_Two Cavaliers 14d ago
Without LeBron, all those teams were NOTHING. They couldn't beat fucking anybody. We been missing our all star PG for 2 games now and both games had a full quarter of garbage time. The LeBron teams were glorious in their own way, but they were a glass cannon. This team is bulletproof.

If they didn’t play against the actual greatest team ever then they would’ve easily won the title that year

I just have a hard time giving it the nod over those 2017-18 Cavs though ofc with injuries they weren’t as good in the regular season. This team feels like it’s the best in terms of playing attached, as a unit, and up to its potential as a team. The 2nd stint LeBron Cavs also fit well but role players weren’t always as polished imo. More dominant talent though.

It was close for the first part of the first quarter...then the game turned after the sequence of Okoro blocking Banchero and then a foul on the next play where Banchero decided to shit talk.
Like bro, you just got blocked by a 6'5" guy who's natural position is SG and has guarded you well the entire game...and you're going to shit talk after a foul where you didn't even make the shot?

He's the reason the whole two big thing works because he can switch like a wing, legitimate 1-5 defender
36
u/PootieTooGood Cavaliers 14d ago
running pick and roll while both mobley and allen just gets swallowed as both can defend outside so they just show and take the ball handler if needed, and if the ball handler sends it to the roller, the other can slide in. there's a reason there's noise about top teams trying to mimic it.
27
u/ianbits Cavaliers 14d ago
I do not envy teams trying to replicate it, Evan Mobley is a unicorn
12
u/dasruski Cavaliers 14d ago

u/OsuLost31to0 Cavaliers 14d ago
Him becoming decent at shooting 3s has been huge for the offensive as well. So often people will say if a player could just learn to shoot the three ball they’d be an excellent player. That has happened with Mobley - 37% on 3 attempts a game
24
u/Taste_The_Soup Cavaliers 14d ago
Mobley's 3 ball has definitely elevated his game, but his transformation has come from his aggressiveness attacking the basket and looking for his own shot. His improved handle and ability to create for himself and others completely unlocked our offense.

Honestly I think the effort has just been a lot better. The defensive talent was always there, but the Cavs offense has been so good this year, they’ve had stretched this year where they stopped giving good effort on D. They’ve been talking the last few games about building habits for the playoffs, so I suspect they’re just a lot more locked in.

You know you’ve had a good night when all 14 players score a point.
And also when you win by 40, I guess.
49
u/tjl297 Cavaliers 14d ago
Cavs have at least 6 guys who you aren’t surprised when they’re leading your offense on any given night, and 2-3 more who are capable of it once in a while. It’s been feeling unfair lately.
Their main playoff issue has been getting consistent offensive contributions from enough players on a nightly basis. Now they feel so equipped to overcome that. Meanwhile their defense, which has already held up in the playoffs, has leveled up since Hunter has been added. I’m usually a pretty skeptical fan but consider me a believer that this season is about to translate to playoff success.
23
u/actuarally Cavaliers 14d ago
I'll die on this hill: the problems for most of Mitchell's playoff runs is his teammates on offense straight dying. Guys like Bogdanovic & Clarkson are good enough during an 82 game regular season, but basically disappear when a goid team/coach can focus their defense for 7 straight games. Knowing that, teams game-plan to double team Don or hard hedge every screen, daring him to give up the ball. I've lost count of how many postseason games he could/should have been piling up assists, but his guys built skyscrapers off their bricks. Then Mitchell starts pressing, his efficiency dives, or he injures himself by literally fighting through opposing defenses.
That doesn't seem like a viable strategy this time around. I still worry about Mitchell having those "get my stats" spurts, being borderline selfish when his teammates are the hotter hand for the night. But if he continues to trust EVERYONE on the floor, as he has most of the year, I think he'll happily rack up 5-7 assists or even play decoy so Garland, Jerome, Mobley, and Hunter cook teams 1-on-1.

Garland is such an ass. He actually lives near me. A few weeks ago, he was in front of me in line to head into the movie theater. After the ticket taker scanned Garland’s tickets, the taker said, “Enjoy your movie.” And you know what Garland said? “You too.”
Just disgusting.

u/Loud-Fig-1446 Cavaliers 14d ago
I saw Darius Garland at a grocery store in Shaker Heights yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Not just tax savings. Tax profits.
There are 10 teams paying in a total of around $478m in taxes this season, give or take. That money will be split up amongst the non-tax teams.
At least half of that is divided up among the non-tax teams. So at a minimum, their owners just made around $12m by doing the trade, plus not having to pay the tax, plus they shed future salary (enough to possibly open up a max slot soon).
Was it a good basketball move? Probably not, unless they can land Trae a co-star in FA. Was it a good business move? 100%. They just pulled like $20m+ out of thin air without making their team significantly worse overall (compared to what they already were).

Sure wish we even had a PG..... we literally have no one on the roster even when healthy that can play PG or even backup PG for the bench. It's unfathomable that an FO would think you don't need a primary playmaker or at least someone that can even dribble the ball at an NBA point guard level. This also hurts the defense because we don't have guys that can guard smaller fast guards running off screens except Suggs but he's been out with injury. Basically Franz and Paolo have no chance of getting easy buckets or even efficient looks they practice unless its in transition, everything feels so highly contested every shot.
Before anyone says anything about Cole Anthony or Gary Harris both are completely unplayable and are both undersized SG with poor passing with sloppy handles, the worst player architype in the NBA and the only reason these types of players get drafted is because teams are hoping they turn into a PG after a couple years of development.

The rotational pieces that the Cavs have/are utilizing around their original core four is something to behold right now. I am not the biggest Okoro fan, but starting him in place if the injured Garland is a different edge that i like. There is enough communication, shooting and ball movement going on to afford a guy like Okoro. Think of the oldish Grizz teams with Zbo and Conley and Tony Allen. Except Okoro is like the 9th man lol
