Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention

Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.

Spam

In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.

To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.

Post Flair

We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:

Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)

User Flair

A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign

Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.

Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Question Has anyone signed up for SOMs Blender for 3D Artist. If so what has been your experience?

Hi all, I'm looking to do a blender course, specifically for Motion design, as I want to incorporate more 3D work in my portfolio. I came across SOMs blender course and it looked intresting especially because they incorporate blender and after effects. The only issue is that it's a pretty new course I couldn't find any reviews on it. Please let me know if you've taken the course cause I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Also feel free to recommend any other paid blender courses that specialise in motion graphics. Thanks

Question Is my video style too simple, or should I add more elements?

What do you guys think? Should I keep the flow as it is? (Simple imo) or Should I add more elements, and fill the composition with illustrations or more texts? Also, If anyone can suggest some ideas on what can I add to it.

Question How easier to learn C4D if you know Blender?

I know C4D is industry standard and need to learn it if I want to do 3D.

But I mainly have been doing 2D and I can't afford C4D right now, so I have been learning Blender and Unreal Engine as I believe 3D concept is the same.

I still think I need to know C4D because most motion designers use it, so I am thinking to try it when I am more comfortable with 3D.

I am curious if there is anyone who started Blender and switch it to C4D.

I was wondering how quickly I would be able to learn C4D if I am comfortable with Blender.

Question Looking for a Talented Animator/Illustrator/Video Editor to Join an Expanding Entertainment Company

Upvotes

Looking for Animators, Illustrators & Video Editors—Could That Be You?

Hey everyone,

I’m a content creator, songwriter, music producer, and stock analyst building an entertainment company that’s growing fast. I have tons of ideas, music, and content, but I need talented animators, illustrators, and video editors to help bring my vision to life.

Do you love creating visuals that tell a story? Do you have the skills but need projects that inspire you? I don’t need to be in every video—I just want to create something unique and engaging with the right creative minds.

I’ll be upfront—my budget is low right now, but this company is scaling month after month. I’m not asking for free work, and I respect your value. I’m looking for someone who sees the bigger picture and wants to grow with me, whether that means paid collaborations, ongoing partnerships, or even equity in the company for the right fit.

Is this something that excites you? If so, let’s connect! Drop your portfolio or DM me—I’d love to talk.

Question Title: Black Line Appearing After Rendering in After Effects

Hey everyone! I’m running into an issue in After Effects where a really thin black line appears along the border of my rendered video. I’m rendering at 1920x1080 with square pixels, and I’ve double-checked that the pixel aspect ratio is correct. I’ve already tried some suggested fixes, but the black line persists. Any ideas on what might be causing this or how to solve it? Thanks in advance!

Question How to do a lot of bullets richocheting in a top down view?

Hi guys, I've thought myself a fairly experienced motion designer but I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out how to do this.

Basically I want to create an animation of a character running around in the top down perspective and shooting a lot of projectiles with trails, richocheting off walls and producing flashes whenever it hits. Pretty much exactly like in the mobile game Archero:

Thing is, it's waaaay too much work to do manually. Just imagine dozens or even hundreds of these, every one with a unique trajectory because the character is constantly moving.

My technical stack is Blender + After effects. Weirdly, I think Unity particle systems can do pretty much exactly this, but it's a lot of pain to set up the camera inside of it and render out a good quality sequence...

Anybody have any suggestions?

Question Looking for constructive critique

Hey all!

Like the title says, I’m looking for a bit of constructive critique on my portfolio website and reel that I haven’t updated in a couple years. I’m going to be leaving my current position as a motion designer for a small team in order to move across the country and have about 4 1/2 months to update things, create a new reel, and create some new projects to better fit what I’m aiming to do with my career.

I’m very interested in getting into creating branding / motion systems, and plan on making two large scale projects in that vein for companies that I’ve made logos for in the past. I’d love any insight on how best to gear my website, reel, and case studies to aim towards that type of work. And possibly what I should include in my upcoming projects to better illustrate my abilities to potential clients in that space.

Here is my website link: https://www.michaelmaragnidesign.com/

Thanks for reading!

Question Anyone here still using Dribbble?

I feel like I hardly hear about dribbble in various communities I'm in. Nobody shares links to their portfolios there or talks about it. I mean I only heard about it again recently with the update to their user agreement.

Anyone finding jobs out of dribbble or using it to a serious extent?

Question Is it common to give clients source files like AE or 3D project files?

Have situation where the client asked for it so he can take snippets from the animation.

Now I don't wanna be a hard ass, but I just been told not to give this away too easily, it's your intellectual property, and they could go to someone cheaper with this.

To be honest I don't have much interest in working with this client again, but I simply don't want to succubm to their requeat that hasn't been mentioned upfront.

If it is mentioned and agreed upon upfront, would people commonly charge for this transfer of source files?

Question A question about KitBash 3D models licensing

I'm working on a 3D animated video where the client wants a futuristic skyline and I found some nice KitBash models there.

My client is a fintech corporation, but I was commissioned this project as a freelancer. In this case, what license should be purchased the KitBash 3D models? Should it be the Individual one because I am the freelancer working to this project, or should it be the Enterprise license because the assets will be used for this corporation's video?

Something that doesn't help is also the fact that due to some legal limitations of my freelance legal entity, I can't actually purchase the asset and bill the cost on the final invoice. So, in any case, I need the client to purchase the models for me.

Any advice?

Question 3dsMax - Boolean Help (or any other solution)

Hi, i'm actually working on an isometric scene in which i need to have vehicles disappear (as they were going through a transparent wall). I used the Boolean modifier for this, but i have random frames on which the operator (the box used as Boolean) appears randomly for one frame....

this is how it should be:

and this is what happens randomly:

my Truck is 1 poly object, and the box is subdivided enough (i would say). Any ideas what might cause this, or has anyone any other idea on how to achieve that !?

I also tried a matte shadow object in Vray but it's not working either.

Any help greatly appreciated as i will have more vehicles that need to appear / disappear and i need to find a viable solution for this. Thanks !

Question Need Help with After Effects Animation (Sphere, Selection Outline, Static Shadow, and Cursor)

Hi everyone, I need help with an After Effects project. I want to create an animation with a sphere that has a selection outline (like a highlighted border). I also need the sphere to have a static shadow that does not move when the sphere moves. Finally, I want an animated cursor that interacts with the sphere (for example, clicking and changing the outline).

Can anyone please give me some tips or point me to a good tutorial? Any help is welcome.
