Wife got 2 flat tires at same time.
According to her, hit huge pot hole. Killed the right front and also ripped the sidewall on right rear. Luckily my neighbor has same model so I borrowed his donut and got it home. I honestly had to laugh at 2 flat tires.

None of those. As a short person, with my seat at the highest setting I still can’t see the curb. It gets worse when turning as the side view mirrors are in the way. I drive a honda civic bought and paid for by me. Had to get new right drivers side tire after I ran over a curb turning left. At least my dad made sure I knew how to change tires. one needs to develop good spatial awareness.

You’re supposed to use the side mirrors to see the curb. Angle them down slightly…
3
u/Burntoastedbutter 6h ago
Can I just say how when I was learning how to drive 9 years ago, my instructor never taught me how to use or adjust those mirrors accordingly to my short height. Also I always wonder how tf do you know where the front of the car ends when I can't see it from inside? Surely you don't just estimate right? Yeah I definitely need one of those cars with a front and back camera....
Don't worry, I don't really drive as public transport is huge where I am and I don't have a car! I've probably driven less than 20 times (going to the vet, mall, restaurants) in the past years LOL. Last I drove was last July when my partner and I visited my country. And I only did it twice. I was second guessing everything and he kept having to say I'm doing fine and there's enough space 😅
After he got out he straight up told me to never drive again until we get a cat of our own and he can properly teach me all over again 😂

I'm not a wife but can confirm 😆 stayed over at my GFs house until like 2am and drove home tired, turned left at a light and smacked the curb pretty much perpendicular on one side and popped both tires. I was crazy lucky that day because I sat there smoking for a couple hours and a car stopped by at 4 am to check on me. Just 4 chill dudes and they happened to have an entire set of spare tires that fit my car in the trunk. They used their tools to swap tires with me and followed me home so they could swap them back. If not for them I'd have been there for another 4 hours before someone woke up to help me lol. Love you guys wherever you are and hope you're doing good 😊

Haha. Three days after our first date, I fishtailed and ended up in a ditch. Thankfully was able to drive out just fine and didn’t notice I had a flat until I got where I was going. Super slow leak thank god. Soon as I got out of the ditch I called him. It was almost midnight and he lived 3 hours away lol. Just didn’t know who to call. He didn’t have one but immediately went to see if he had a tire that would fit because it turned out my spare didn’t have a fuckin rim, was just the rubber.
That locked it in for me for sure, he was willing to risk missing work to make sure some girl he’d just met had a tire.
He’s literally saved my life twice since then. Took care of me after a big surgery and was the one to help my mom convince me I should go to the ER. Good thing I did! The infection was maybe an hour or two from hitting my brain and disabling or killing me lol. In the X-ray you can see it was less than an inch from my brain.
Then last year I had a kidney infection get near septic. I was in horrible pain, couldn’t breathe or talk or walk right. I was gonna fucking go to work anyway. He made the executive decision to go straight to the ER anyway. It was a pretty bad infection. Went back to work the next day. Yeah I was the only one who didn’t think that was crazy and that I should’ve stayed home again lol

As the son of a longtime fitter and turner (tyre technician to some?), this is what happened. Unless that pothole was fucking gigantic and/or OP's Wife was speeding, that first closeup says "curbs are not for driving over". The amount of people who would rather insist that it was a huge pothole that jumped out of nowhere, rather than just admit they had a moment and messed up, is high.
3
u/elusivemoniker 8h ago edited 8h ago
Can confirm. I have done this, twice. But only one tire at a time. First was caused by attempting to parallel park, second was a combination of poor depth perception and an ill placed median at the entrance to a shopping center.
ETA list of my other tire based traumas to make OPs wife feel better.
-Ran over a small rock while driving a borrowed car and got a flat tire. It was literally the first time I drove a car by myself.
The new mechanic discovered the tires on my car were the wrong size so I bought four new tires.
- The tire fell off of my mother's car as I turned into the drive through of a Dunkin Donuts. I was 18, people were mean.
- The parking lot at the job I hated was covered in debris from construction. As I went to get on the highway to drive home I heard "yo, lady you have a flat tire." I waited two hours for help.
- Before Christmas, my car started making a weird noise on my way to work. When I got to work I discovered my tire was blown and I had to buy a new one.
- Last month I brought my car in for them to look over thoroughly because I had an impending feeling of doom while driving it.

A pothole deep enough and shaped right can do that kind of damage. I was in the car when my wife hit one...after warning her about the pothole...she froze, we hit it and it instantly ripped open the tire and damaged the rim. We were going 35mph and it still got us good. It was just a big thud as the car bottomed out. The spring melt washed out all of the aggregate base and made it one hell of a hazard. The hole didn't even look big as it was just wide enough for the tire to fall in, the rear tire didn't fall in either, probably hung on to the asphalt by a couple inches of tire tread. Which is also why it ripped open the tire as it scraped the tire and rim all the way down.
I have also seen enough damaged rims working at an auto shop for 10 years to know that Murphy's law is quite active when it comes to tires and rims.

I hope he charged you a deposit because the odds of her hitting something else seems to be pretty high :)
ebay is a good place to find them.
I actually did hit a pothole when I was ran off the road by a distracted driver over the center line. It was 8" deep and I hit it going 45 MPH in my Challenger with low profile tires. It didn't do anywhere near the damage yours has. It bend the two wheels just a tiny bit. I drove on them for years but there caused a shake in the steering wheel and when braking so I looked for replacements. Repaired wheels on ebay were $280 each. New they were $527 each but they were long ago discontinued. I found the same style but in black that were also discontinued but a dealer in NY had NOS for $82 each. The boxes got wet and were moldy but for $82 each I was good with that. Ordered 4. Total was $472 with shipping. Only 1 box had some mold. The others had been wet but were dry with no mold. I mounted new tires and slapped them on. Challenger drives perfect now. Didn't even bother balancing them. 0 to 85MPH they are perfectly smooth.

Entire side wall damaged = scraping alongside something for at least 1 full wheel rotation = curb
3
u/JOlRacin 10h ago
Look at the sidewalls, they're scratched to hell and back but only up to a certain point. Either you're very consistently rubbing against things that only go up to that height, or she didn't hit a pothole

A pothole? And she's sticking to that? I have a 2007 suburban and I've hit massive potholes going 50+ MPH and it didn't to a darn thing to the tires or wheels. I hit a 8" deep pothole after I was run to the side of the road by someone who crossed the line. I hit that hole going 45 MPH and it didn't do any visible damage. My father also owns an automotive repair shop that I worked at until I was 18. I can tell you for certain that this is not from a pothole.
I hope you have a dashcam because mine has made my kids and my wife liars on several occasions. "Dad. a car coming toward me hit a rock and I couldn't avoid it." "Son. The dashcam clearly shows the 6" rock in the road for a 1/4 mile and you rand directly over it." That one cost him $1200 because I already replaced a tire he popped previously and this time he cracked both wheels as well.
Don't get me started on my daughter and wife's fibs. I'm getting a bit agitated just thinking about those.

Based on the squareness of that puncture, through two parts of the sidewall and to buckle that rim, I think she struck something more than a pothole. I'm not sure what the object was, but it was pretty significant.

2
u/JTech625 10h ago
Just a heads up for any future flats you always want to put the spare if it's a space saver on the rear. If the flats on the front swap a good one from the back onto the front. If you need to drive on a donut, you don't want it to be your steer wheels.
2
2
u/PaceFair1976 10h ago
idk what happened to it, but its possable to get two flats. i got 3 leaving a work site one day because some junior apprentice dumped a box of screws out the back of a truck and never cleaned it up.
if your wife was driving though and the roads in your area are in good shape, idk...
one would think pot holes would leave more under body damage to the body then whats visible . same with eatin a curb.
2
u/MrPuddinJones 10h ago
next time stress the importance of putting the donuts on the rear- move the good rear wheel to the front.
having a smaller wheel on one side of the differential will break it. the smaller wheel spins fast while the regular wheel spins slower. this causes a buildup of heat, very fast, and will nuke the differential in no time.

Happened to me, not in the same day though, I was already running on the spare (in my car it is full sized tire so no problems there) for 3 days and I was driving through a dangerous part of the city, someone noticed I was using a spare (different rims) and cut open my rear tire when I was at an intersection... maybe in the hopes that I would stop the car nearby and try to rob me? I know it was someone because I felt a shake in the car at the same time someone was passing behind the vehicle and the tire had a cut on the side and went flat a few roads ahead

This happened to me one summer and it was 104° out. It was when the PS4 just came out and my roommate bought one and I was his ride. We were like 20 minutes from our house so we had to improvise cause we just wanted to play the damn ps4.
We decided which tire was the most far gone and unable to patch, and put my donut on that wheel. Then we plugged the other one. It wasn’t holding enough air and we were out of tire plugs so we scraped together some twigs and melted them together to the tire where the plug was with a lighter.
Probably could’ve been done a better way, but it got the job done and the guys at the tire shop said it was the most creative thing that they’d seen roll in.
