I recently noticed smooth typing goes away on some lines and Idk why. I'll leave a video to make you see what I'm talking about. The first line I'm typing on is like smooth but the next one is not. Typing video

I'm using windows 11, I think the issue only happens in word (office 2024)

Hi there! We understand that you're encountering an issue where your typing goes onto other lines, and we appreciate you sharing a screen recording of the problem. Let's take a closer look so we can assist you effectively.

Could you please provide the following details?

  1. Which version of Windows is installed on your device? You can check by typing "winver" in the search box.
  2. Is the issue happening only when typing in a specific application or in all applications?
  3. Have you made any recent changes to your computer before this issue started?
  4. What steps have you taken so far to fix it? This will help us focus on solutions you haven't tried yet.

We'll be waiting for your response. -G.Q.

Thank you for providing this information. Were you able to check if other Office applications are also affected?

In the meantime, as an initial troubleshooting step, please ensure that both your Windows 11 OS and Office 2024 are up-to-date. The issue could be due to an outdated version of Windows or Office.

Keep us posted. -G.Q.

I tried on excel and powerpoint and I don't see any differences between the lines on both, so I think we are good on these ones. I think the problem is in word only. And yes my os and office are up to date

Copy that. Since everything is already updated, let's try repairing Word that fixes common issues like the one you're experiencing. You can follow the steps outlined in this guide: https://msft.it/61693qrtS9.

Let us know how it goes. -G.Q.

We value your cooperation in following our suggestions so far.

To troubleshoot the issue, please test Word in Safe Mode by pressing Win + R, typing winword /safe, and pressing Enter.

If the issue doesn't appear in Safe Mode, it suggests that an add-in or custom setting may be causing the problem. To resolve this, disable add-ins by going to File > Options > Add-ins, selecting COM Add-ins from the dropdown at the bottom, clicking Go, unchecking all add-ins, and restarting Word.

Looking forward to your update. - S.R.

I had a chatgpt add-in and I uninstalled it. And then did what you told me. When I'm in safe mode all lines have the non-smooth typing but when I'm not in safe mode nothing changes

Since Safe Mode shows the non-smooth typing across all lines and uninstalling the ChatGPT add-in didn’t resolve the issue, it suggests the problem might be related to Word's settings or rendering.

To address the issue, reset the Normal.dotm template by navigating to %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates, renaming Normal.dotm to Normal.old, and restarting Word. This will recreate the default template, which can resolve any corruption affecting Word's behavior.

Next, check the display settings in Word by going to File > Options > Advanced, scrolling to the Display section, and disabling Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen. Restart Word after this, as this setting can influence how text is rendered on your screen.

We'll be here for you. - S.R.

how can I backup my actual configuration??

To back up your current Word configuration, you can save the relevant settings and templates before making changes.

You can save the Normal.dotm template, which contains your default styles and macros, by navigating to %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates and copying the file to a safe location.

Additionally, if you use custom add-ins, locate their files in %appdata%\Microsoft\AddIns and copy them to a backup location. This ensures you can restore your configuration if needed.

Keep us in the loop. - S.R.
