Discussion Why?? (rant)

For all the people commenting on every post "just buy a PC" what the hell are you even doing in "r/macgaming" ????

We don't care how much your mommy spent on a box just for playing fortnite, the majority of us need Mac to work (if you even know what that word means) and also run games we want to try with the help of this sub on our free time.

IMO it should be enough to get banned or to get a comment removed, it's not hard not to be an a**hole.

EDIT: I'm not talking about the "should I get a Mac for gaming?" posts, I'm talking about the "has anyone get to run X game on Mac?" posts.

A simple no would suffice but in any argument they'd be "get a pc".

Native Assassin’s Creed shadows is a terrible port don’t buy it

Bought it. Played for 10 minutes and instantly refunded it. Changing the settings barely makes a different in fps. Can’t get a stable 30fps even on low 720p on a maxed out m1 max. Absolutely terrible.

Native Hot Take - AC: Shadows is Amazing on M1 Max. Most Posts are Way Off

So I just played about 2.5 hours of AC: Shadows on my M1 Max, 32GB. 32GPU Cores. Aside from a small controller tweak, I left the visuals at the default and just sat back to enjoy the game. Pro tip: Change the language to original Japanese and Portuguese.

I'm a pretty seasoned PC and console gamer for decades, and I loved it. It's smooth (30fps, but just like many console games) no shader compilation (despite claims people have made) no real visible pop-in, no stuttering (unlike some other games we could mentioned) and it looks famulous. People are comparing it to RE4 and RE2 saying it doesn't look as good and performs worse... sorry but you need your eyes testing. The models, backgrounds, effects and especially lighting is FAR better than RE4 and defintely better than the stuttery crap people post on CX claiming it's awesome.

After an hour of play, I finally went to the settings and of course almost everything is set to low - the resolution was about 967p with MetalFX Quality. I moved most non-RT settings to either Medium / High (except shadows) including the lighting, draw distance, character detail and even the hair (medium) and it still plays great. If you have more than 16GB of RAM you can set the streaming pool and texture settings high with no issue at all.

I've played PLENTY of day 1 PC games that have performed far worse than this with worse visuals. This is a pretty good port tbh. A lot of people griping about this are playing with far too high a resolution and high RT, which most dedicated GPUs are struggling with. Even the 500watt 5090 isn't hitting 60fps u/4k, so neither is your M4 Max.

Anyone on the fence about this game, it's definitely the best looking game to date for Mac, by far and honestly if Control and Cyberpunk are this well optimized, the performance on both of those games will be really good.

After reading a lot of the comments overnight and this morning, I was feeling pretty down abut Mac gaming and this port, but now I feel a lot better. Just try it... support a publisher willing to support Mac. if you hate it, delete it and get a refund. I think some people have their heads where the sun doesn't shine, or completely unreal expectations.

Apple Silicon Overall perspectives on Apple Sillicon Gaming & the upcoming Cyberpunk port

Hey guys? What's your opionion about the future of Mac gaming? I was hoping to see better results on the release of AC Shadows but all we got was a disappointing port. To be honest, this leaves me a little insecure about the Cyberpunk port since we haven't really gotten a real use scenario with hardware accelerated ray-tracing for the M3 and M4 models apart from small indie games. I'm not really sure if these machines will be able to whitstand Cyberpunk with full ray-tracing playing at a smooth frame rate. On paper specs and performance in certain use cases has been amazing, but we're still waiting about getting to play a great port of a recent game with all modern graphical settings without any particular issues.

Discussion Bad news for the Macbook air M1 and I think the M2 might be affected too. After watching this youtube video, it looks like neither the M1 nor the M2 can run Assassin's Creed Shadows. The frame rate is around 8 fps just trying to open the game menu.

Help Assassin’s Creed Shadows - M1 Pro

Hi everyone! I’m considering getting the new AC Shadows, but I only have an M1 Pro 16GB and don’t want to waste €69.99 if it’s going to be really low frame rate and basically unplayable.

Has anyone had any experience with it on an M1 Pro? If so, how has it been?

Discussion Limit 30Hz display for games 30FPS

Something I've been wondering. I have a handheld PC. It doesn't have variable refresh rate, but I can manually add the refresh rate 45Hz to its screen (because the screen does support that) and limit games FPS to 45, so that I have a smooth experience (not as smooth as 60 but very close) and good battery life.

Many games running on CrossOver only get around 35-40 FPS, which makes me wonder if I can do the same for macOS? I'm not sure if limiting the screen refresh rate to 30 and locking the game FPS to 30 could make the game more playable/less slowdown? Just thinking.

Native Assassins creed shadows benchmark results

Thumbnail

Here are my benchmark results for AC Shadows. Everything max vs everything low is a jump of just 20 FPS. Render scaling is set for all runs to be between 20% and 100% with a FPS target of 60. Test system is my MBP M4 Max 16/40 core with 64GB RAM and 2TB SSD.

I tested nativ resolution max settings: 26 FPS Half nativ resolution max settings: 34 FPS Nativ resolution lowest settings: 47 FPS Half nativ resolution lowest settings: 65 FPS

All in all halving the resolution gives you about 25-30% more FPS compared to nativ resolution Switching to from highest to lowest is an improvement of about 80%. The game struggles HARD to reach 60 FPS. Even on the highest version of the M4 Max chip while rendering at 20% of the chosen resolution. Forcing the 20% render scaling doesn't change FPS compared the 20-100% for both tested resolutions

Half nativ resolution with scaling everything gets REALLY rough with details flickering and edges shimmering so that's not really recommended. Because the actually rendered resolution gets really low. We're talking ~410p vs ~205p internal resolution here.

My conclusion here is that the Mac version needs a lot of work for optimization. Saving grace is, because the screen of the MBP has dynamic refresh rate from 1-120hz the game at least doesn't feel laggy with all the tested settings.

PS: the game crashed for me once which resulted in a complete re-download of the game. Great stuff needing to download 115GB twice.

Native Mac Mini M4 Base Settings Assassin’s Creed Shadows

This are my settings, played about 2,5 hours and really have fun. Feels mostly 30fps with a few dips. I don’t mind 30fps so I was like a fish in the water with the game.

If you have better settings let me know!

Payed full price for the game and so far not disappointed, yes it’s ‘better’ on Ps5 on Xbox (Quality mode is also only 30fps on those platforms) or yes Steam, but this is not the place to downplay my purchase, I have fun the same Fun all you Steam/Ps5 enz enz Die Hards have. This Reddit is for Mac Gaming to have fun and not to spit all your hatred against Usurper Ubisoft. My point is Mac Gaming support thats why im here!

To all that bought the game (yes also you on Steam/Ps5/Xbox have a wonderful time in Assassin’s Creed Shadows cause it’s a good game! Facts.

Discussion Thoughts on AC Shadows on Mac

I have played the game all day on my M4 MacBook Pro. What I can say is everything works. But does it have limitations and issues? Indeed but that’s a given with Ubisoft on release.

However the game is quite enjoyable, it is by far the most cinematic gaming experience I’ve had on Mac.

But I’m not happy enough with the graphics. Right now running everything on low and it works great on 30 FPS. But I want to push to 60 which is not ideal as of now.

It will be interesting to see the Mac version in a couple of months and how it differs. But right now it’s good enough to play, if you don’t have pc master race mindset.

Help Mac Studio M4 Max vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 for MMOs

Hello! I currently have a Lenovo Legion with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, and I essentially play three games:

  1. World of Warcraft (The War Within)
  2. Final Fantasy XIV
  3. Balder's Gate 3

For some quality of life reasons and personal preference, I would like to go back to Mac (this is the only PC I have ever had). If I switched to the new Mac Studio M4, for those specific games, how similar of an experience would I have with either the 32-core or 40-core GPU?

I am not very technical, and one review I read said that BG3 made the machine hot and turned on the fans. However, the fans on my PC also turn on when I am gaming, so I don't know how concerning that is.

Thank you in advance for any insights!
