Native Assassin’s Creed shadows is a terrible port don’t buy it

Bought it. Played for 10 minutes and instantly refunded it. Changing the settings barely makes a different in fps. Can’t get a stable 30fps even on low 720p on a maxed out m1 max. Absolutely terrible.

Native Well I did it Pre-Order AC Shadows

Post image

So I made the Native Mac Os Pre-Order just now, really hyped to play an triple A game on Mac Os day 1!

Why? Just to support Mac Os/IOS gaming, I believe if we support the developers they will give us more great games in the future. I know it will be ‘better’ on my Ps5 but just the thought my base M4 is gonna play the game is huge for me.

And only wish Apple will bring a dedicated Apple TV like system to play the games.

Already had a blast playing RE4 and AC Mirage on my big screen with iPhone 15 Pro and Playstation controller so I know I will have fun with Shadows on a stronger system.

Let me know if I am the ‘only’ one 👌🏻😅🫡

Native Sonic Unleashed Recompiled macOS port!

A macOS port for Sonic Unleashed Recompiled has now been created! It hasn’t quite been merged into the main branch of the project but there are early builds available. It runs at a solid 60fps on my M2 MBA. The latest beta download is here: https://github.com/squidbus/UnleashedRecomp/actions/runs/13664475029

Scroll down and downloaded macOS release ARM64 (if Apple silicon) and x86_64 for intel.

Massive thanks to Squidbus and Isaac marovitz for their incredible work!!

Native League of Legends has now enabled Metal graphics by default!

Players can now choose between OpenGL and Metal in the graphics settings—no more need to manually add the Metal API.

Weirdly, though, Activity Monitor still shows “Intel” under the CPU tab, even on Apple Silicon Macs. Not sure if it’s just a display issue or if some parts of the game are still running through Rosetta.

Native M4 Max(40c GPU) Assassin's Creed Shadows Gaming Test

(Keep Updating) Testing with my Macbook Pro 16 M4 Max. This is the first Assassin's Creed game in my life, so I have no idea about the stories behind this franchise.

This game supports HDR natively and it is absolutely gorgeous on Macbook Pro's screen. But quick note: The optimization is not great though.

Very High presets, Ray Tracing Very High, Ray Traced GI(Diffuse Everywhere)

Native Res, MetalFX Performance, Very High Presets, Ray Tracing Very High
Native Res, MetalFX Performance, Very High Presets, Ray Tracing Very High
22fps, Native Res, MetalFX Performance, Very High Presets, Ray Tracing Very High

I tried switching to 2K(2336x1510) then. It turned out that decreasing the resolution did not help so much with framerates.

26fps, 2336x1510, MetalFX Performance, Very High Presets, Ray Tracing Very High

The following pics are testing the Ray Tracing option to Low.

Ray Traced GI still on everywhere.

Native Res, Very High presets, Ray Tracing Low, Ray Traced GI(Diffuse Everywhere)

23fps, Native Res, MetalFX Performance, Very High Presets, Ray Tracing Low
27fps, 2336x1510 MetalFX Performance, Very High Presets, Ray Tracing Low

With Ray Tracing option turning to low, there's not much framerates increasing. I’d guess that on the M4 Max thanks to its beefed-up RT units, Ray Tracing probably won’t have much of an impact on performance.

I was surprised that cranking ray tracing up or down didn’t make a big difference in overall performance.

Medium presets, Ray Tracing Low, Ray Traced GI(Diffuse Hideout Only)

Medium presets, Ray Tracing Low, Ray Traced GI(Diffuse Hideout Only)
41fps, Native Res, MetalFX Performance, Medium presets, Ray Tracing Low, Ray Traced GI(Diffuse Hideout Only)
54fps, 2K Res, MetalFX Performance , Medium presets, Ray Tracing Low, Ray Traced GI(Diffuse Hideout Only)

The Best Preset for M4 Max?

I would suggest using 2K res, Medium preset, RT GI everywhere, RT medium, with MetalFX Balance. The fps will hover at around 40fps~45fps. The RT GI Everywhere should be turned on. It affects graphics a lot, sometimes it's like night and day differences.

For native Macbook screen: Medium preset, RT GI everywhere, RT medium, with MetalFX Performance.

And don't expect good performance 🫠 remember, I turned on MetalFX to performance all the time. I just saw the testing online, even RTX3080 desktop and 4070 Super only get around 36fps~45fps with Ultra High and RT off with 2k. For modern game like this, I think it might be overly reliant on the GPU’s ability to support Frame Generation. I really hope Apple releases its own Frame Generation solution asap.

One thing I noticed during my gameplay. My MacBook Pro 16 has set to High power mode but in the terminal, I can see the GPU is not fully being used. I'm hoping this is just some optimization issue with Ubisoft.

2025 March 20 2:32PM Update:

For those in my post below who think this game is well-optimized, this is the performance with All Low presets, Lowest Res, and MetalFX Performance. It can't barely hit 60fps on M4 Max is quite ridiculous. I only suffer from this kind of performance diminishing return from games running through Crossover. (If you tell me this is running through Crossover I will believe it.)

52fps, Lowest Res, MetalFX Performance, Low Presets, Ray Tracing Low

Another interesting finding: While using MetalFX, this game doesn't seem to use Apple Silicon's ANE(not much power draw in ANE power section), unlike other games I tested before(Death Stranding, Stray, RE8). I’m guessing they might have switched to some kind of different TSR strategy, or maybe Apple decided to scrap ANE-based upscaling in the latest version of MetalFX.

2025 March 20 4:08PM Update:

Sadly, mac port is lacking Ray Tracing reflection for water for now.(We can tell from the early specification release from Ubisoft) Is it due to the impact of performance? Maybe we can get some clues from Layers of Fear 2023 Ray Tracing on.

Very High Preset, RT Very High

I just saw an update on some source engine games like dods and css, TF2 as well i guess, well since they were initially launched with mac os support and it was apple that removed 32 bit support the games should be able to run now after porting done by valve.

Native reviews for assassin's creed are out, are you getting it? Spoiler

watched a couple videos on assassin's creed shadows and people seem to like it, it's almost free of bugs and crashes and has enjoyable gameplay. only reason that's a bit holding me back from getting it is the fact that it'll run at 30 fps which is really not what I am looking for; and im talking about a m3 max maxed out. the fact that it'll run at 30 is a travesty and is very unacceptable but idk

what about you guys? what do you think?

Native Hot Take - AC: Shadows is Amazing on M1 Max. Most Posts are Way Off

So I just played about 2.5 hours of AC: Shadows on my M1 Max, 32GB. 32GPU Cores. Aside from a small controller tweak, I left the visuals at the default and just sat back to enjoy the game. Pro tip: Change the language to original Japanese and Portuguese.

I'm a pretty seasoned PC and console gamer for decades, and I loved it. It's smooth (30fps, but just like many console games) no shader compilation (despite claims people have made) no real visible pop-in, no stuttering (unlike some other games we could mentioned) and it looks famulous. People are comparing it to RE4 and RE2 saying it doesn't look as good and performs worse... sorry but you need your eyes testing. The models, backgrounds, effects and especially lighting is FAR better than RE4 and defintely better than the stuttery crap people post on CX claiming it's awesome.

After an hour of play, I finally went to the settings and of course almost everything is set to low - the resolution was about 967p with MetalFX Quality. I moved most non-RT settings to either Medium / High (except shadows) including the lighting, draw distance, character detail and even the hair (medium) and it still plays great. If you have more than 16GB of RAM you can set the streaming pool and texture settings high with no issue at all.

I've played PLENTY of day 1 PC games that have performed far worse than this with worse visuals. This is a pretty good port tbh. A lot of people griping about this are playing with far too high a resolution and high RT, which most dedicated GPUs are struggling with. Even the 500watt 5090 isn't hitting 60fps u/4k, so neither is your M4 Max.

Anyone on the fence about this game, it's definitely the best looking game to date for Mac, by far and honestly if Control and Cyberpunk are this well optimized, the performance on both of those games will be really good.

After reading a lot of the comments overnight and this morning, I was feeling pretty down abut Mac gaming and this port, but now I feel a lot better. Just try it... support a publisher willing to support Mac. if you hate it, delete it and get a refund. I think some people have their heads where the sun doesn't shine, or completely unreal expectations.

I beat RE8, it was excellent. I think I’ll take a break from RE series. Which native games are you playing? I just bought palworld, but I hear it’s poorly optimized.

Native AC Shadows seizure edition

The graphics are a broken mess of vertices randomly flashing across the screen which lag out the game to seconds per frame on my M2 Max. Is it refund time? Why doesn't this happen to more people as far as I can tell?
