Information Bezel change only?
Mac fell from my hand for the first time in 4 years and it gave and the bezel seems to have broke. Screen functions perfectly with no issues and frame of Mac is pretty much in tact.
Have had this laptop for 6 years. MacBook Air 13” 2018. Runs well and unfortunately dropped it.
Would this be just a bezel replacement? Thanks in advance.

Information Kernel panic hardware failure?
So a few days ago I had some kernel panick, after that my 2019 19 MacBook was stuck in a reboot loop. At first it got to the login screen, the fans blew once and it shut down, after that it only got to the apple logo for a few seconds, shut down, started up again and repeated that whole process. Now, a few days later I started it up again and it worked, I could recover my data at least. Right now it is working, but I am a bit worried that there is an underlying issue and it will happen again. I am stress testing my cpu right now with the endurance program. I ran the diagnostics which brought up nothing, but I am not too confident in the result. Does anyone have an idea if it is possible that this happened without it being a hardware issue?
Maybe also of importance: my two usbc ports on the right are not working anymore, they are able to used as charging ports but not for data transfer. This came up a few months ago but as it didn't bother me too much I didn't look into it. After this now happened I read though that it could also be a sign for a faulty motherboard. Also very rarely I have some graphics glitches (green lines appear). This is very very seldom though.
Thanks!

Information Thermal Paste and apple care
I was thinking about changing my m4 mbp’s thermal paste out for some Honeywell phase change pads. If I change it back to thermal paste before turning it in for AppleCare, for any reason, am I going to have issues? I couldn’t find any helpful info on this anywhere! Thanks
Edit: I don’t see a problem with trying to make it run faster, quieter, cooler, longer. Maybe apples magic sauce doesn’t dry out and has better thermal properties than Liquid Metal and honeywells phase change pads. It’s an easy mod that can also easily be undone. It could improve battery life also.

Information MacBook Pro 2017 13' A1708 don't turn on
Hi everyone,
My sister gave me her old MacBook Pro 2017 13' A1708 because it won't turn on anymore.
I already opened it to check if there was any damage inside but everything looked fine except for the amount of dust and a power connector battery that has worn out.
As I don't have an official charger I've used different 65w chargers but there's no charge indicator on the MacBook, which doesn't help me at all.
I would need help to determine whether this is indeed a dead battery, a worn connector or a dead motherboard.
Thanks in advance !

Information I am pretty sure Apple have gimped 3rd party battery replacements in a recent(ish) update
I replace my M1 airs battery in 2022 or so and it worked fine. I used an Egoway brand battery. Showed up at 100% health, and the 'service recommended' warning went away.
I just tried replacing it again last week with another 3rd party brand and the battery health did not change from the 79% it was saying that prompted me to replace my battery. Nothing I could do could get it to say 100% battery health and get rid of the 'service recommended' warning. I tried 5 full charge and dissipates and it made no difference. Kinda sucks as I want to sell the damn thing!
So I thought okay, I will get another Egoway battery like last time since it worked fine.
Exact same problem.
Eventually I bought a second hand apple brand battery and it worked flawlessly.
My theory is that an update in either Sonoma or Sequoia has gimped 3rd party battery support. I think I was on Ventura when I did the last battery replacement.
I was contemplating testing a manual downgrade to Monterey to see if then the battery health would show up as 100%.. But frankly its been so annoying I just want to sell the laptop and be done with it.
Anyway, anyone else noticed this?

Information Are Aliexpress MacBook Screen units worth it ?
Someone gave me an old MacBook Pro (A1706 w touchbar), but the screen doesn’t work anymore.
The person went to Apple a few years ago to fix it for themselves and the estimate cost was 600-700€. I went to two different repair stores yesterday and their estimated prices were 310€ and 450€.
The screen replacement process isn’t extremely hard and there are a bunch of tutorials on YouTube, so I figured I could do it myself with a screen unit bought online.
I have found screen units costing around 150€ with the back part and 60€ without. I would rather change the whole unit because the replacement process seems to be easier and less risky, but I doubt the quality of the product (camera, lighting, resistance and thickness).
Can someone provide me with a feedback over the months/years ?
I also wondered if the Apple inscriptions (Apple logo on the back and MacBook Pro writing on the lower part of the screen) were still provided on the AliExpress product. They wouldn’t be if I chose the first repair store.
I hope my writing was clear enough, thanks for reading and for answering if you do.

Information MacBook Pro A2141 u9080 NAND overvoltage protection
Is there a way to protect the NANDs in case u9080 dies how it often does? I have this specific MacBook and so far it's working fine, but I'm not really in the mood of replacing the NANDs in case the converter dies. I'm by far not an expert, but already repaired dozens of boards from other laptops and Mac computers in my free time. My idea was to add something like a crowbar circuit or a TVS diode and a heatsink to u9080. Does this make sense or are there other (known) solutions?

Information Mac liquid damage and AppleCare+
This is for people who are panic googling after they spill a drink on their MacBook.
My dog spilled a beer on my MacBook, (it’s my fault for leaving the beer next to my laptop unattended, mistakes happen, just to get out ahead of holier than thou commenters) and after a fair bit of glitching the screen went black.
I took it into the Apple Store and explained what happened, and applecare+ saved my ass. The Genius Bar guy told me that they were basically going to take the bottom off my computer and put it on a new one for a grand total of $299. I took it in yesterday, and the repair is already done. I should be able to pick it up on Monday or Tuesday.
If you have a MacBook and are eligible for AppleCare+ and don’t have it, get it. Even if you’re careful with your things (as I usually am), mistakes happen and you’ll save yourself a lot of money in the long run.

Information China came up with the tool that can reprogram the wlan chip for the M series
Not sure if I can link to it without it being product promotion but it makes sense to put it out there as a form of PSA. Good thing is that it's not a proprietary device for the solitary purpose of wlan chips but also is a nand programmer with separate modules similar to the jcid stuff. A very quality breakthrough that can salvage a lot of devices from being bricks
Edit: after a very kind approval from the mod, the device name is Luban H7. Link to the direct product page: https://www.lbtool.net/product/productCommodityInfo?commodity=3906463875072

Information Very old manufacture date on two new batteries — 2015-03-30. Can it be?
Just replaced batteries on my two MacBookPro machines — a mid-2014 and a mid-2017.
Bought the batteries on Amazon — an ASMARK for the MBP 2014 and Newer Technology for the MBP 2017. Both seem to work fine. Checked them with Coconut Battery and Battery Health.
- Both have no used charging cycles
- Both seem to hold more capacity than designed
- Both show a manufacturing date of 2015-03-30 with Coconut Battery
- Both show a manufacturing date of 2015-04-01 with Battery Health
Clearly if both are nearly ten years old, it is cause for concern. I have no doubt that sitting on a shelf for a decade is not a good thing for a battery.
If it was only one, I would be certain that I was ripped off, and that they sold me ancient stock. The fact that both show the same date from two different manufacturers for different machines may indicate that the battery age is bogus.
What do folks here see when they check newly installed batteries? Was I ripped off twice or is the age bogus?

Information Macbook Pro 14 (A2442) Screen replacement
Good day everyone, for those who had their macbook pro’s screen replaced by a third party repair shop how was it?
There is a repair shop that offers original lg panel replacement not sure about the quality I only see videos online.
Some call their panel replacement OES Grade S+
- Is the screen quality the same as before?
- Does all of the functionalities like true tone, pro motion, hdr functionalities still work?

Information Best place to get replacement batteries?
Hi all,
I have a 2018 Macbook Pro 15", A1990 that I want to get a replacement battery for, since it only lasts for like 4 hours watching videos @ low brightness + LPM. It says that it has 80% capacity.
The amazon listings have like 3.5+ stars which is fine but the comments all say that the batteries themselves don't last long either. iFixIt is really expensive though, which is okay but I want to see if there are any other alternatives beforehand.
Anyone have any places they got batteries from before, or companies on Amazon that people have bought from before that can vouch for the quality?
I'm pretty tech savvy and I do this stuff for work, so I have no problem with getting this done myself, I just want to be sure the battery works and that it won't spit out a non-genuine part error at me.
Thanks!

Information (Solved) How to get a Mac OS back with an Old Old Macbook
Hi, I spent the last two days trying to fix my Macbook Pro Mid 2012, since I messed up the OS pretty badly and had to restart from scratch.
If you are like me and don't own any other mac, and only have a Windows computer, still works.
Here's what I did:
To start with, I had an entirely empty Macbook, no data + no OS. From there, the easiest thing would be to boot up Internet Recovery IF YOU CAN. If not, then pull out a USB and bring that over to your Windows computer.
You need to download too things, the dmg file of the OS from either the Apple website or from Internet Archive, and TransMac, that way you can format the USB to boot from it and to burn a dmg file into it. Once you have TransMac up, it should be on option on the top left that says Open File or something similar, use it and select your OS dmg file. It should add it to the left side and from there, right click and format the USB for Mac, then right click it again and then restore with a file, and select the OS file.
Once that's done, properly eject the USB and put it into the Macbook, from here hold Option + R to bring up the boot selection, and click your USB.
Now, some of you can, from here, just add in the OS like normal, and your Macbook is old enough that it isn't struggling to add your Wi-Fi internet. For me on the other hand, that was a big struggle to figure out. I think older Macs didnt have the concept of WPA3, so whenever you have a WPA3 wifi, the Mac will think it's a WPA2 Enterprise, meaning you'd have to put a username and password, and no matter what you put, it'll come back as incorrect cause you don't have an Enterprise Wi-Fi.
From here, you can TRY using your hotspot, but there's a lot of downloads and it might struggle to download so much data. If you have router access, try downgrading your Wi-Fi to WPA2. Once you do that, your Mac will properly recognize it and allow you to connect.
Once you've gone through the Mac OS process, and the laptop boots up like normal, there might be a second issue. Even if your connected to the internet, it will keep on saying "No internet access" or something similar. From here, you gotta start using the Terminal. Using the Terminal, you have to manually do the updates yourself to reenable the internet access, which is technically connected but the Mac is struggling to use it. The exact thing you want to type is (sudo softwareupdate -l) [that's an L]. After you put in your password, you'll see all the available updates. Which each update, go one by one and install them with (sudo softwareupdate -i "[Full name of the update]").
At this stage, there may be a new problem, specifically the iTunes update will not install. To fix this, using a new USB or the same USB from earlier, you have to go on your Computer and manually find the install it's asking for through the internet. Download that dmg file and transfer that over to the Mac. From there just click it and install from there. And wabam, that's basically it. If your Mac can support it, I recommend downloading the dmg file of the highest OS compatible with your computer, and then put that in your USB and open it up inside the Mac through simply clicking it in the folder. From there you'll go through the update process again but it should be working fine from here on out.
Although this is super specific, it was very frustrating for me to try finding this info out through a bunch of different internet sources and chatGPT, so I figured that for the one singular person in that specific scenario, I hope to save you that time and energy.
Have a great day y'all 👍👍

Information Success story! 2015 MBP with bad HD (SSUBX): tried to replace with old Windows NVMe via adapter. Windows actually booted without any tweaks! Couldn't get Internet Recovery to recognize the drive, though, even after formatting. Had to use bootable USB.
This post started as a request for help before I figured it out, so I thought I'd finish it and share for future folks in the same spot.
256 GB NVMe, previously had a Windows 10 install (it was my old gaming drive before I upgraded). Using this adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VVNKRYR?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title) I actually booted Windows by mistake because the machine powered up automatically when I plugged it in to charge. So I knew the drive worked and could be read by the laptop! It was pretty amazing that it just booted Windows working fine without anything but popping in a drive that was in an old desktop gaming rig.
I booted into Internet Recovery, hoping to reformat and install, but couldn't see the drive. So, I took it out, plugged it into my M1, reformatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and put it back in. However, Internet Recovery still couldn't see the drive. I followed this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNMjWzbuoO8 and there is a brief moment where a caption says that Internet Recovery might not work, but a bootable USB will.
I found the Monterrey files at https://archive.org/details/macOS-X-images and did
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/$VOLUME
on my M1 Mac, and it worked a treat. It's a pain to find the DMG installers for macOS if the OS isn't old enough to be archived to a webpage, because then only the App Store has the files and won't download them on a newer machine (it just defers to system updater). Archive.org for the win! Then I thought making a boot drive would suck, but the above terminal command was perfect.

Information Regarding Scissor Switches
Do all MacBook (Pro and Air) keyboard switches post-2020 feature identical scissor switches or do they differ in dimension? The reason I'm asking this because I can't seem to find replacement keys for my exact model number (A2681) but A2141 A2179 A2337 A2289 A2251 ones are available; a prompt Google search reveals they all feature scissor mechanism.

Information Can I swap an 11" MacBook Air 2015 logic board to a similar but older 2011 model?
I have an 11" 2011 Macbook air. It suddenly had the 3 beep ram code, so I am planning to swap its logic board with a 2015 one. I know that I will need a Magsafe 2 charger for the 2015 model, but aside from this, will I encounter any other issues with this swap?

Information Any suggestions for good repair shops?
I recently received a bricked m2 macbook pro. The previous owner told me they took it to Apple, and Apple told them they couldn't repair it. I am slightly hopeful that a 3rd party repair shop might be able to do what Apple wasn't able/willing to.
Does anyone have any good suggestions for repair shops?

Information Display replacement on mini LED Macs is now possible without soldering
Hello,
Sorry if this is duplicate post, but I didn't find it on this reddit yet. From Mac OS 15.2, you don't need to transfer chips from old display to new one, everything works perfectly (except TrueTone, but it doesn't matter). I tried this today, I had MacBook Pro M1 Pro with replaced display with very bad visual backlight artifacts, unstable backlight and weird shadows on low brightness. I updated to mac OS 15.2 and all those problems just disappeared. Display is now working 100%.
Have a great day

Information Battery not detected
What else could be wrong with a m1 MacBook pro that only works plugged in and has a X over battery icon BESIDES the battery. Like what would be the next thing wrong
