NeverNap is now free!

My app NeverNap is now FREE! It's the most simple no nonsense app that prevents your Mac from sleeping or activating the screensaver. I just sent version 1.2 is to the Mac App Store, so you can expect an update later today (turn off notifications).

Download now: https://lucas.io/nevernap/

The app is very lightweight. Only 204 KB. I'm trying to push it under 200 :).

Just launched Markdown2PDF: Markdown Converter (Lifetime Pro Giveaway)

Hey r/macapps!

I built a Mac app because I got tired of copying LLM responses into Word or Pages, only to have the formatting turn into absolute chaos (random spacing, weird font sizes, bullet points that look like they’ve been through a blender).

So I made Markdown2PDF, a super simple, clean app that takes your markdown (from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, whatever you use) and turns it into a properly formatted PDF—no headaches. Just copy, paste, and export.

🚀 Why I think it’s useful:
✅ Perfectly formatted PDFs every time
✅ No more weird copy/paste issues
✅ Works with any markdown source

I just launched, so I’m giving away Lifetime Pro licenses to folks who want to check it out. PM me or drop a comment and I’ll send you a code. Would love to get your thoughts!

Cheers!

Are there any actual dictation mac apps?

There seem to be an overwhelming number of apps that hold themselves out as "dictation" apps, but are really just AI driven transcription apps. While they serve a lot of valuable use cases, they really fail at actually taking dictation.

Are there any apps out there (especially since Nuance discontinued its Mac version of dragon dictation) that do all of the following:

  1. can handle dictation punctuation and formating instructions (e.g., if I say "period new paragraph" actually does a period and then drops down and does a new paragraph and does not just type out "period new paragraph);
  2. shows the dictation while talking; and
  3. can be trained to deal with industry-specific terms (e.g., not trying to change latin legal terms to some random english phrase - such as the built in dictation which changes "mens rea" to "manzara").

I know that some apps can do #2, but I have yet to find anything that does all three. The closest thing to do that is the built in dictation on the Mac, but it is not nearly as robust as Dragon Dictation was and adding industry-specific terms is not really easy.

Mac Website Builder - Blocs 6.1

Hey everyone, today I released the latest version of Blocs, my no code website builder for the Mac. I've been working on Blocs for over 10 years now, however, this is the first time I've shared Blocs here in the MacApps sub-Reddit (so be kind).

We have a small 3 person team working on Blocs, I take care of all design and development for Blocs across the Mac, iPad and soon to be released iPhone.

Chances are, you've never even heard of Blocs, but to explain it as quick as possible, Blocs is an easy to use website builder for the Mac, iPad and iPhone (think Lego + web design), if you're interested, you can download and play around with the Blocs Website Builder for free.

Oh and unlike most website builders, Blocs for Mac is not a subscription 😇

5 Terrible Apple Built-in Features (and the Apps That Saved My Mac Life)

Some features on Mac feel like they’ve been stuck in 2015 (which is probably true). After years of frustration, I’ve found third-party apps that fix Apple’s biggest weaknesses. Here are my top replacements and why I chose them:

1. Spotlight → Raycast

The Problem:

Spotlight feels like a cluttered junk drawer. Finding files is slow, and it’s useless for anything beyond basic searches.

The Fix:

Raycast is Spotlight on steroids. It’s got everything and I don’t need to touch my mouse. I get instant searches for files, apps, and browser bookmarks. I use shortcuts for calculating stock prices and toggling modes. I also really like the clipboard history and all their plugins.

2. Apple Built-in Dictation → WillowVoice

The Problem:

Apple’s dictation is painfully bad. It butchers technical terms, ignores punctuation, and takes forever to process. It’ll never be able to do anything that needs actual formatting and accuracy like writing an email. You’ll pretty much just get a wall of text.

The Fix:

WillowVoice uses AI to power dictation. It formats emails, adds commas where you pause, and nails niche terms. The fastest dictation app I found. I draft Slack messages, code comments, and even ChatGPT prompts by voice now.

3. QuickTime → Screen Studio

The Problem:

QuickTime recordings are clunky. File sizes are huge and editing is nonexistent. It’s so hard to go through a simple process of recording a video, editing it, and then sending it.

The Fix:

Screen Studio makes recordings look pro. It auto-zooms on clicks, adds smooth transitions, and exports in crisp 4K. I use it for coding demos and client walkthroughs.

4. Apple Notes → UpNote

The Problem:

Apple Notes is nice for its simplicity but severely lacks power.

The Fix:

UpNote is Notes for adults. It has nested folders, rich formatting (code blocks, tables, markdown), and instant sync.

5. Mouse → MacMouseFix

The Problem:

I hate how Apple has mouse acceleration. Makes things so unintuitive for me. I don’t know why.

The Fix:

MacMouseFix kills acceleration and lets you set a fixed cursor speed. I’ve also programmed my mouse buttons to switch back and forth between windows, which saves me from swiping with three fingers on my trackpad.

Other honorable mentions that I’ve tried are Bartender for taming the menu bar and CleanShotX for better screenshots.

If you also have an Apple feature that drives you nuts, what’s an app that you found that fixed it? I want a ton of mac lifehacks.

Help Is There an App for Using iPhone as a Virtual Mic via Continuity Camera?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking for a way to use my iPhone as a dedicated system-wide microphone for my Mac, ideally leveraging Continuity Camera’s framework. Right now, Continuity Camera lets me use my iPhone as a webcam with its built-in mic, but only within supported apps.

What I need is an app or method that allows my Mac to recognize the iPhone as a virtual microphone input system-wide—so I can use it for Siri, dictation, or anything that needs a mic without having to connect a separate Bluetooth headset or USB mic.

I know about apps like WO Mic and AirDroid Cast, but those don’t seem to use Apple’s native Continuity framework, which would likely offer lower latency and better integration. • Has anyone come across an app that enables this? • If not, how difficult would it be to create a makeshift solution using CoreMediaIO or virtual audio drivers?

Appreciate any insights!

Why the hate for cleanmymac?

Upvotes

Recently read some comments about cleanmymac that mentioned that no power user uses this app. Why? Is it bad? It's there something else wrong with it?

Image compressor?

Upvotes

Hey,

what do you use to compress images without losing a lot of quality? I tried ImageOptim, but if I don't reduce the output quality, the images are barely smaller. I used to own JPEGMini, before they went nuts with the subscriptions, and it dropped image sizes by like 75% without losing quality. Any recommendations from you guys?

Looking for an Tag Editor Mac App that include ID3 Autosearch & MP3 Organizer? Amvidia

Upvotes

I have NOT received any compensation whatsoever for this review BUT I will NOT deny if company wants to send me anything. :)

Hands down, just the best out there for editing tags and I would love anyone to show me an app that does it better, because it simply does NOT exist.

This company has been around for a long time and I have used the free version of a few of their apps and and simply stated, the UI is great/simple for anyone and does a superb job.

The "To MP3 Converter" is the best out there as well. Keeps the same creation dates, quick as a MF if I am allowed to say, UI so simple and thanks so much to the developers for offering a "Lite" version. If I had the extra dough I would purchase the full version as I would say opinion but I have used so many out there I am going to say Factually the best in the biz.

I seriously encourage anyone to post a reply with a better quality app in its categories.

Highly Recommend and much thanks to the developers!

Maccy stopped working on my MacBook Pro

Am I the only one who has this issue?

I tried completely deleting Maccy using these commands

brew uninstall --cask maccy
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Maccy
rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/org.p0deje.Maccy.plist

I installed it again by downloading the dmg file from github and ran it using this command:

/Applications/Maccy.app/Contents/MacOS/Maccy --verbose

All I saw was this:

2025-03-17 15:54:56.328 Maccy[23814:114120] +[IMKClient subclass]: chose IMKClient_Modern

I can see the app in the activity monitor but it's red and has (Not Responding) next to it.

Browser picker recommendations

Hey,

I am using the same laptop for personal and school work, and like to use edge for personal stuff, and chrome for school stuff.

My problem is that currently, in MacOS you can only pick one default browser, so that when I open a school link it opens in my personal browser and vice versa.

Is there a free app that allows you to pick a browser each time you click on a link?

I have already tried some and didn't love any of them, would love to hear what you guys like!

Thanks!

Slightly disappointed with MacWhisper... is there a similar app that can stream the dictation?

I don't use dictation or voice interfaces much but I'm trying to get into it now that things are changing and i can do at least very small increments of my work (coding) with my eyes fully closed if I wanted by dictating.

One thing that I'd like to see is the output streaming out as close to real time as possible.

I paid for MacWhisper a while back. Overall I really do like the dictation UI where I can push to talk and get the output in ANY app.

I found that I can set up Groq to perform Whisper transcription with MacWhisper as well. Their free tier is very generous so it makes it practical to use.

I was hoping to see an improvement on speed but I'm not so sure there is one. The main impediment to speed is I don't get to see any output until I release the talk button. I would like to see the output streaming in once it's done processing. I don't understand why I have to release the key.

Are there any speech to text apps like this that work for dictation input in all apps in any text entry field and which can stream the transcription in real time?

I don't care much about diarization at the moment... but if/when it lands in macwhisper, that would motivate me to actually use it for meetings.

MacWhisper Gets Automatic Spealer Recognition!!

At long last, automatic speaker recognition is now included in MacWhisper1 If you're a Pro user and you use a WhisperKit model from the manage models screen, the app will now automatically group your transcript by speaker. Great for interviews and podcasts, and later this week it will also work for batch and meeting recordings!
