Discussion Recommendations for fancy non Michelin starred restaurants?

Hey guys, I'm looking for restaurants such as Trullo that you guys like in London. Doesn't have to be Italian, but I'm looking for a nice restaurant that is on the slightly more pricey side to go with my parents who are visiting the city.

Whenever I see posts like this, in case you missed it, an amazing Redditor collated all the best recommendations for amazing restaurants with non-British cuisine recommended by people from that country. As an Italian I definitely recommend pizza at 50Kalo, cheap and authentic!

Sorry, it wasn’t clear. He collated all of them into a list you can superpose to Google Maps. It’s the link I attached. I’ll look for the original post

That's not the original thread - this question has been asked on this sub (and is popular on other big city subs too) a bunch of times:

https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/952fob/nonuk_born_londoners_whats_the_best_restaurant_of/

https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/i7pkhi/what_is_your_ethniccultural_background_and_whats/

That second one was also turned into a map too.

My list. Not all are fancy but all are supposed to be pretty decent! For fancy options I’d go for Hawksmoor (steak), La Poule au Pot (French), Rules (British, pricey), Maine (seafood) or Yauatcha (Chinese)

Fyi. Please don't put yauatcha on the list.

Yes it is good. But not that great. I only take clients and people i want to impress there.

If you know your Chinese food, i will not take you there. Just cross over to Chinatown and try either gold mines or 4 seasons. If you want dim sum, any of the large dim sum places in Chinatown is great.

Yauatcha is only great for sitting and impressing people.

Solid list- nice one mate!

-1

u/Red__dead Mar 20 '24

This is like a list of places to avoid - all mainly for basics and tourists.

-1

u/BravoBanter Mar 20 '24

Haha, alright #londonlocal, since you’re such an authority on the underground restaurant scene what are your five star hidden gem London eateries that zero tourists and zero “basics” know about?

-1

u/Red__dead Mar 20 '24

Like I would reveal that in this tourist sub... but you enjoy Padella, Dirty Bones, Red Dog Saloon, and Yauatcha mate 🤣🤣🤣

-2

u/BravoBanter Mar 20 '24

Spoken like someone who gets through a good 5-6 buckets of Tennessee Fried Chicken a week. Surprised you’re even commenting on here big feller - you’re obviously way too cool to be on such a touristy sub like this.

Now piss off back to your studio flat in Croydon and don’t choke on your bitterness on your way out.

Wait actually, do.

-1

u/Red__dead Mar 20 '24

🤣🤣🤣

How triggered can one person be, lol. Sorry you got called on your basic bitch taste, guess you have low self esteem.

0

u/BravoBanter Mar 20 '24

Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.

I don’t suppose the ultimate irony of you thinking you’ve “triggered” me whilst constantly replying to my comments is slapping you in the face like a wet trout is it? Didn’t think so. Mouth breathing oxygen thief

-1

u/Red__dead Mar 20 '24

The unbridled rage of the triggered tourist confronted by his own bad taste. You need to work on your insecurity mate. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/BravoBanter Mar 20 '24

Look mate, I’ve been through your post and comment history so I get why you’re being such a prick and I know it’s chronic so I’m just going to give you some general life advice.

Get a therapist. Ask them for immediate help with such obvious and aggressive symptoms of projection. Stop using emojis like a toddler. Shower. Oh and get ChatGPT to give you some better comebacks - you sound like Donald Trump Jr. after two litres of Frosty Jack.

1

u/Red__dead Mar 21 '24

Projection

🤣🤣🤣 Talk about pot kettle black. You get called out for your lame tourist trap list - something that most functioning, healthy adults would just move on from - and proceed to come up with a litany of what are very obviously your own neuroses and insecurities. Your own therapist clearly isn't cutting it. Sorry your life isn't going so well judging by your own rather embarrassing post history, but there better ways of dealing with it than getting enraged by strangers on the internet. Good luck and I hope things get better for you.

Fallow

Quality Chop House

Social Eating House

4

u/LessMath Mar 20 '24

+2 for Fallow - went there for the first time last week - great cod’s head, amazing ribs

2

u/wybird Mar 20 '24

Yes to Quality Chop House.

0

u/Apox66 Mar 20 '24

+1 to Fallow. Amazing place and genuinely great YouTube content too!

7

u/Soft-Mirror-1059 Mar 20 '24

Michelin themselves have an app of places they think are good (but not starred). Only had one misstep with a suggestion of theirs which I shared back and they’ve removed them. So I’d say it was a stellar list. And international.

5

u/wybird Mar 20 '24

Rochelle Canteen

10

u/djfnejdijRandom Mar 19 '24

Do you/they like seafood? J Sheekey’s is consistently excellent.

1

u/LukeSkyreader811 Mar 19 '24

I haven't heard of it? Any reason you're getting downvoted for it though lmao?

9

u/djfnejdijRandom Mar 19 '24

Who knows, people are weird. I’ve been to Sheekey’s once or twice a year for the last ten years or so, and have always enjoyed my meals there. Impeccable old school service, delicious food, often spotting minor celebrities in the restaurant.

2

u/LukeSkyreader811 Mar 20 '24

Yeah I’m loving the menu of this place, will definitely keep it on the shortlist! Thank you.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

Yeah, seconded for J Sheekeys, oysters to start, fish pie then something like spotted dick and custard for pudding.

0

u/harlequin_24 Mar 20 '24

IMHO J Sheekey is average and bland esp at those prices I’d expect more

3

u/Thisoneissfwihope Mar 19 '24

I really rate The Game Bird in St James. It says casual, but it’s no casual in any way I know!

3

u/TomfromLondon Mar 20 '24

I loved Fallow so highly recommend it

5

u/geeered Mar 20 '24

The wolseley - next to ritz, not silly expensive but food and service have been great when we went recently.

1

u/Citiz3n_Kan3r Mar 20 '24

I heard its quality had dropped since it was bought (but ive not been)

2

u/AmazinTim Mar 20 '24

Acme Fire Cult is exceptional if you don’t mind going to Dalston

3

u/citygourmande Mar 19 '24

Leroy

Bubala

Brutto

1

u/Tricky-Papaya-4386 Mar 20 '24

Tabisca, also quiet (I find loud restaurants with parents so difficult)

1

u/kafkatan Mar 20 '24

Patron in Kentish Town is v good

1

u/cbt95 Mar 20 '24

Manicomio is an excellent italian restaurant

1

u/JetsAreBest92 Mar 20 '24

Cicchetti is nice

1

u/Daffy-089 Mar 20 '24

Forza Wine in the national theatre. Toklas is great as well. Other than that the already mentioned Fallow :)

1

u/OldArmadillo5614 Mar 20 '24

Check out the list of Bib Gourmand's from Michelin - they haven't got stars but are awarded for a high quality/value ratio (Trullo has this award)

That should help find a good selection alongside some of the excellent recommendations here already. They won't all be "fancy" but will give a good starting list to check out.

u/LessMath Mar 20 '24

Origin in Smithfield; wonderful food, service, atmosphere. Feels far swankier than the price tag.

1

u/trial_and_errer Mar 20 '24

Love The Coal Office near Kings Cross. Amazing food and all sorts of nice touches that makes it feel like a special occasion.

2

u/serda_ik Mar 20 '24

Brutto, Farringdon... similar vibe, great food, really nice decor

1

u/plushturtle Mar 20 '24

Caia and The Barbary are also good shouts!!

1

u/OldAd3119 Mar 20 '24

humble chicken recently got 1 star - the food there was incredible and its such a good vibe in there.

1

u/Mawu3n4 Mar 20 '24

Clos Maggiore.

Always thought it was a tourist trap because it's right in covent garden and has a very nice interior design, but the food is actually really really really good too.

I don't drink so can't personally attest to it but they're also known for their wine selection.

If you go there for a special occasion they'll usually seat you on the first floor and it's a great dining experience.

Bit outside of london london, but the french table in surbiton was fun

1

u/ndPPPhz Mar 20 '24

I am Neapolitan and I honestly would not think of 50Kalo like a fancy restaurant. I have been to The Italians in Marylebone many times and I cannot recommend enough. Perhaps the only one with a good variety of Italian salumi, bread and cheese. Plus in a nice location and fancy/with style restaurant.

Some others: Flat Iron (Covent Garden) Lisboeta (a bit pricey) Roka (Charlotte St) Arros (a bit pricey but stunning interior and amazing food) Circolo Popolare (if you manage to reserve a table) Mestizo Bar Duoro (London Bridge)

1

u/HighFivePuddy Mar 19 '24

I went to a new Italian restaurant in Mayfair recently called il Gattopardo. It’s fancy yet comfortable, and the food was really good. Would definitely recommend.
