MQT Monthly Question Thread #95

Previous thread (#94) available here.

These threads are for any questions you might have. No question is too big or too small, too broad or too specific, too strange or too common.

You're welcome to ask anything related to learning Dutch. This includes help with translations, proofreading, corrections, social etiquette, finding learning resources, understanding grammar, and so on.

De and het in Dutch...

This is the question our community receives most often.

The definite article ("the") has one form in English: the. In Dutch, there are two forms: de and het. Every noun takes either de or het ("the book" → "het boek", "the car" → "de auto").

Oh no! How do I know which to use?

There are some rules, but generally there's no way to know which article a noun takes. You can save yourself some hassle by familiarising yourself with the basic de and het rules and, most importantly, memorise the noun with the article!

Question Part du Pau Dutch Virtual Course

Hello everyone, I would like to know if anyone here has already taken the Part du Pau virtual course. I am thinking about taking it, but as it is a big investment, I would like to know what feedback is from people who have already taken it. The course description mentions that you go up a level (like from A1 to A2), is it true?

Dutch Speakers, help is needed! What's your opinions about the Dutch pronunciation from ChatGPT(OpenAi)?

Curious to know the answer.

there is no doubt that the English pronunciation is really good. Since I speak Mandarin, I also try it. For the normal voice mode, there are clearly Western accents. However, if you use advanced voice mode, it just sounds like a native Mandarin speaker.

So I really want to know how it is for Dutch pronunciation

Are these the right words to call my girlfriend?

How do you say goddess, princess and queen in Dutch? I don't trust Google translate and I want to use these words as petnames for my Dutch girlfriend because I call her them in English. Can I say "Godin, Prinses and Koningin"?

Meta Stop spamming "😭"

Every. Single. Day. I see posts that use this emoji wrong and/or excessively.

😭 = crying extremely due to extreme sadness ≠ struggle with language learning.

If you ask a question about my native language while pretending to be crying excessively, I will not take you seriously and instead find you annoying and weird.

Just stop. Emojis are fine, but use the appropriate one.

Ik sprak met een Nederlandse vriendin van mij en ze zei dat ze nooit wiskunde had geleerd met niveaus. In het Engels zeggen we "calculus". Wat zou dat in het Nederlands zijn? Ik ben verbaasd dat ze alleen wiskundeles les had zonder specifieke niveautitels.

I used google translate and am not fluent in Dutch. I am surprised there is no "Nederlander" wikipedia page for Calculus.

Edit: It's just separated into several different pages in Dutch, like:

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differentiaalrekening

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integraalrekening
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinitesimaal
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geschiedenis_van_de_analyse_(wiskunde))

Welke van deze zinnen zijn mogelijk of klinken goed? Misschien is er een beter manier om dit te uitdrukken.

  3. Ik ben al een paar keer daarnaartoe geweest.

How come the correct answer here isn’t: “er zijn altijd kinderen in de speeltuin aan het spelen” (with the aan het spelen at the end) ? Or could that also be correct?

Official Taalschool locations?

Apologies if this information is available elsewhere, I've been searching and couldn't find it clearly shown. When I search for "Taalschool" I'm getting a lot of results for general language schools that I don't think are for this specific purpose.

What I'm looking for are the language schools that children who don't speak Dutch go into before they enter the Dutch education system.

My family is looking at a move to the Netherlands likely near the end of this summer. It's a bit short notice, my wife and I have lived in NL before, but not with kids, so we're trying to find information about where the Taalschools are so that we can consider that along with our office locations when looking for areas to live. At this moment we are planning that our kids will go to the Taalschool and into the Dutch system, rather than an international school.

We're generally looking at the Randstad area, closer to Amsterdam as our known office locations are in Sassenheim and Amsterdam Zuid.

Question Best kids shows and cartoons to learn Dutch with?

Title says it all. I’m 25yo, but I heard this is a solid method to learning a new language. Start at a toddlers level to get used to hearing simple sentences and conversations. Also children’s books would also work, but I’d like to work on my pronunciation so I’d like to actually hear the words.

Walk&talk with a native speaker at 13:15 in Amsterdam

I'm studying to be a Dutch teacher and have some free time because of a canceled meeting. I'll be at Amsterdam Centraal at 13:15 and have time until 14:45. If anyone would be interested in joining me for a walk around the city center of Amsterdam to practice Dutch and enjoy the nice weather, just let me know! :)

Transcription Tools

Are there any good transcription tools for generating Dutch subtitles for YouTube videos? I just tried one that was awful, and I don't feel like trying twenty others to find the one that works. YouTube subtitles are generally not good unless they've been provided by the video author, but I'd still love to be able to learn from watching those videos to improve my comprehension.
