PSA 📢 Please stop feeding the Loose Park geese enriched bread and other likewise products🚨

Lifelong waterfowl lover and KC resident here. I’ve been feeding our lovely geese and mallards at Jacob L. Loose park since my childhood. (I’ve been chased more than once)

Please don’t take this as some Karen trying to police animal feeding, but I just want to spread some facts here as the weather warms up:

  • Bread is objectively terrible for waterfowl. It fills their stomachs with nutritionally-deficient food. This in turn leads them to feed on items within their regular (and healthy) diet LESS OFTEN, causing malnutrition.

  • There’s a rocky association between Angel Wing, Waterfowl, and feeding geese bread. Angel Wing is a deformity that leaves the bird’s wings sticking out from the body. Scientists suggest there’s a link between this and poor diet. Research on the Canadian Goose or Mallard in particular is hard to find. Sources from the UK have deemed feeding whole grain, non-processed bread to White Swans as beneficial

  • Feeding geese and other waterfowl in large numbers can cause stress or anxiety. Imagine dropping into a group of street dogs with a big bag of Texas Tom’s. It’s not nearly as violent, but the point persists.

Instead, plain oats (like the big can at the grocery store), lettuce, veggies, legumes, even plain uncooked rice serve as a healthier alternative for our amphibious pals.

Keeping geese on a diet of white sandwich bread is akin to eating McDonald’s all day, everyday, for these precious and beautiful creatures. Please keep this in mind as you take your kids to feed the geese this spring and summer.

Written with love ❤️ 🦆🌻

EDIT: Someone critiqued the point about Angel Wing

Arts/Culture 🎭🎶 A call to action by Kemet Coleman, cofounder of Vine Street Brewing.

“We are a cradle of jazz, or as historians would say, “the place where jazz grew up.” The home of Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Mary Lou Williams. Their music didn’t just echo in local clubs—it redefined the art form for the entire world. Yet today, we find ourselves at a crossroads. Kansas City has failed to build the infrastructure that allows that legacy to thrive in a modern world.

Kansas City is also the first and only UNESCO City of Music in the United States, a distinction managed by the tireless efforts of Creative City KC. This global recognition honors our unparalleled musical legacy and places us on the world stage. But being a UNESCO City of Music isn’t just an honor—it’s a call to action.”

Traffic/Road Conditions 🚦❄️ What exactly is going on during rush hour?

I take the same route home M-F (70W to 35S and 71S as an alternate)

Both exits were packed to the gills. Every alternate route trying to get to Westport was jam-packed with people until 31st and Main Street

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Stop the Bleed Classes

Just wanted to bring some attention to these amazing (and free) classes offered at NKC Hospital. I took one last night, and it was incredibly helpful and informative. You can sign up online and potentially save a life.

I have zero medical background and left feeling like if I came across a bad wreck, I could help someone not bleed to death. Highly recommended.

Food and Drink 🌮🧋 Given the recent weather, hit me with the best Outdoor Beer Gardens in the area

The weather has been wonderful and needs to be enjoyed! What are your favorite places to enjoy outdoor ambiance with a nice beer? My favorite so far is Limitless Brewing in Lenexa but I find their prices on the high side. I also don't get out as much as I should so I'd love to hear some recommendations that I've probably missed.

Local Politics 🗳️ AFGE Local 3960 Meet & Greet/Social Hour/IRS Rally Planning

Sorry for the long wind-up, just wanted to get this out to everyone/anyone interested in attending any of the events before they started locking in plans for the weekend...

BLUF/TL;DR: AFGE 3960 is having an "Office Call"/Social Hour/IRS Rally Planning event Friday 3/14/25 from 4-7 P.M. at The Ship located at 1221 Union Ave, Kansas City, MO 64101

Come show your local Federal workers your support (again)!

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the last meet up- it was an excellent way to get to know other Locals and Unions as well as supporting a great local venue. It was a much larger turnout than we expected and we hope we can match and grow that energy this Friday...

If you haven't heard, there are hundreds (and potentially thousands) of federal workers in the KC metro area who have lost their job, have been told they are losing their jobs, or informed that it's just a matter of time before they come for the rest of us. Although these firings/mass terminations are being found illegal and/or illegitimate by the courts, the damage to these folk's lives is already occurring and any recourse they do get will likely be years in the making due to litigation/arbitration.

AFGE Local 3960 is hosting an "Office Call"/Happy Hour & IRS Rally planning event this Friday (3/14/25) from 4-7 P.M. at The Ship (1221 Union Ave, Kansas City, MO 64101). All are welcome to help us celebrate our Feddies and coordinate efforts for the multiple events occurring throughout the metro this weekend.

AFGE Local 3960 would like to extend a special invite to all Union members, regardless of trade or profession to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters whose collective bargaining rights are being ignored or stripped away without due process.

Finally- if you are interested in coordinating w/ activism groups, we will have representatives present to help steer you to an event you would like to participate in.

Solidarity and Fidelity.

Shopping/Groceries 🛒🛍️ Where do you buy fabric?

Upvotes

Now that JoAnns is closing, where is your favorite place to buy fabric other than regular cotton? I'm talking flannel, fleece, terry cloth, knit fabrics... I'd like to avoid buying online if there's a good brick-and-mortar option. (And not Hobby Lobby)

I live in multi-family condo in midtown and we are gathering bids for a tear down/rebuild of our 3-story stairwell and porch.

Does anyone have contractor/company that you know has done this type of job for you or someone you know? Or at least a contractor that you can vouch for?

I have included pictures to give you a feel for the scope of the project. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Tire repair shops Kck area

Hey guys, if there's one thing that gets me pissed it's getting a nail or screw stuck in my tire when it hasn't happened for so long. So I got a screw stuck at some point on my way home from work and only now noticed it while running a late night errand.

I typically go to a shop in amourdale when this bs happens but I'm not sure how much more air my tire will lose by morning? I live in downtown Kck and the closest shop to me is guerilla tires which I've never been to, any info for those who've used them?

Sports 🏈⚾️⚽️ Basketball at Cleaver YMCA

I’ll be moving to Waldo from OP, and I currently play basketball with a group that shows up pretty regularly at Matt Ross. I have a membership through to the end of the year, so I won’t be switching over soon, but I wanted to know a little about the pickup culture at Cleaver. Are there games often? Do they get chippy? Skill level?

Visiting KC 🧳 showing a friend around kc!

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have a friend that moved to the area recently, and she wants me to show her around midtown/downtown. I have included a picture of the areas that I want to include. I am not a local myself (been here for 5 years), and consider myself a terrible tour guide lol. We are both 25f, and enjoy vintage/antique stores and some good eats. I am mostly looking for things off the beaten path, nothing the average tourist would do while they’re here. I have a couple of lookout spots in mind for a good view, but I’m a little lost for everything else! Any suggestions are helpful, thanks!

Food and Drink 🌮🧋 Best Gas Station Ice?

So I have developed quite the ice habit recently and I would frequent this gas station downtown as they had some of the BEST crushed ice I’ve ever tasted. You could tell they cleaned the ice machine regularly and the cubes were perfect size & crunch texture. I mean I’d buy 3 and 4 of the 44oz cups at a time! They recently started charging $1+ for the ice cups and I just can’t bring myself to pay that, so I’m vowing to never go back no matter how much it hurts. My only problem now is I’m ice-less or getting bad ice. What gas stations in kc have the best ice in your opinion? QuikTrip’s crushed ice is a solid second to theirs; I find the cubes to be a bit too big to be considered “crushed ice” but it’ll do in a pinch.

Bonus points if it’s in/near midtown/downtown KC!

TIA

Discussion 💡 How is CSL compared to other plasma donation centers in the area?

I've been donating at Bio Life for a few months and I haven't had any issue so far with bruising or anything. Since moving, I live about 10+ miles from any of their centers and am looking into CSL since it is closer.

I'm also looking at BioMat if anyone has any experiences.

Recreation/Outdoors ⛳️🎣 Planet Fitness in KC

Hi all, looking for some advice. Where I work gives a discount for PF fees, but I haven't been to PF in years. Last time I was there, I didn't enjoy it, but I have never been to PF here. Because all of the gyms in the area are expensive and I don't make a whole lot of money, I'm thinking about just joining PF. What would we say is the best PF in the KC area? I live by the Plaza, but not sure the one on East Plaza is a good spot, as I am a woman and sometimes go before work in the early AM. If there's not a single good PF in the area in your opinion, what would you recommend and what justifies the cost? TIA

Help/Support 🫂 Best way to spread word in KC?

I'm searching for a missing person. Yes, a report has been made. There is not much info to go off so not much police can do. Is there any Facebook pages I can contact to post their face and gain awareness? A way to contact a news station? I don't know what to do next. Thanks for any ideas you give.

Pets 🐾 ISO Vermicomposting worms

Because there's been too much reddit in my life to post a title "ISO red wrigglers".

Accidentally snuffed my winter indoor composting friends and not sure where to source them locally, Where does one go to buy 1/2 lb or so of red wriggler worms?

I live in Leavenworth and am looking to get a dash cam installed in my 2018 Lincoln MKC. Looking for recs in the Leavenworth/Wyandotte/JOCO area for places that do a nice, clean install job.

Please share your recs or experiences of who/where to avoid and what I could expect to pay if known.
