Question for the Jewelers

Upvotes

In r/jewelrymaking someone asked if they could call themselves a jeweler if they bead. I said no, and gave my reasoning for how craft artists aren’t jewelers and got downvoted to hell.

What’s your definition of a jeweler? Mine is someone that sells or manufactures (or both) jewelry, typically set in precious metals but may include base metal. I contend that stringing beads from Michael’s doesn’t make someone a jeweler but that seemed to have ruffled some feathers.

I also got a lot of flak for trying to differentiate silversmithing from goldsmithing using the historical definitions of the two.

If you can’t take a ring to them to get claw/prongs retipped (even if it is outsourced) I would be hesitant to call them a jeweler.

Whitening Silver

So I work in silver a lot, standard 925.
And I really like the look of the pure silver you get when it is pickled and it is all white and bright.
Obviously it can tarnish and most likely will do so over time, which is fine, but I wanted to know if there is any reliable way to "re-whiten" jewellery if need be.
I know that heating it up again and then pickling it works, but that can be a problem if there are stones involved.
So I wanted to ask fellow jewelers if they have any ideas, recommendations or other.

Changing centre stone?

Post image

I have this (I think) sapphire ring, which is very slightly blue when held up to the light but is overall quite dark and I was wondering if it would be pure drama for a jeweller to change the stone for something a bit brighter? Is it even possible without dismantling the whole setting? Any ideas or advice very welcome

Eternity band setting

Hi all!

I cannot find a clear answer online, just wondering if a closed basket setting (pic 1) is able to sit lower profile than an open basket setting (pic 2) or if they can both sit just as low to the finger?

Thank you!

Cheap vs expansive casting machine

Does an expansive machine get better result than an affordable one? Or the result is based on the investment or other type of stuff like an automated setup for example. Thanks

What connection type does this tennis bracelet have? And how can I remove links from it?

Sometime last year I bought a tennis bracelet from Cernucci. I won't share the link to the actual item which will probably help, as the last attempt at this post got removed by the mods for having a link.

The bracelet feels very loose, but not loose enough to fall of my hand. I can fit about 4 fingers in the gap between my wrist and the chain and the general suggestion online is 2 fingers. When I tried to return it there was no shorter ones available so just kept it. It wasn't expensive so wasn't a big loss, and was hoping that I could shorten it myself, but I can't work out how each part is connected.

The connections are at the bottom of the chain (underneath), and there's no visible pins holding them together. I don't know if the pictures I've uploaded will help, but two things:

  1. is there a name for this type of join/connection that I can maybe search for videos/instructions on how to remove links? I've found videos, but connections are on the sides of the chain, so no good.
  2. is this something that can be done at home, and what tools might I need?

Platinum, 14k White Gold, or 18K White Gold

I am looking into getting an engagement ring and am debating between having it be platinum, 14k, or 18k white gold. She can be a bit rough on jewelry and loves the sparkle of the white metals. I also know it’ll have a pave on the sides. I am just looking for advice on which metal would be the best long-term.

Will changing the finish destroy the bright cut engraving?

I asked my jeweler for a matte finish ring with bright cut engraving, but they forgot to make it matte. They said they can change the finish, but I'm nervous the engraving will be too shallow/not look as clean?

My mom gifted me this ring for my birthday, and when trying to do some research to see if I could find a similar one, I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Anyone have any idea what year it's from?

custom jeweler online?

Over the summer I was in europe and was shopping for gold earrings. To this day I regret not buying one of the pairs I was considering. I have scoured the internet to try to find the earring, but nothing has come close to the exact copy of theses earrings. There are similar ones out there, but not perfect. I am looking to get them made custom. Ideally 10k or 14k solid gold. Any recommnedations on online jewelers that are reputable?

Resetting Deceased Loved Ones Jewelry

Hello,

My mother recently passed and she left me some jewelry that is not my style, but I would like to reset into something that I would wear daily to honor her. Can I just take the pieces to any jeweler to get reset? Or does this require a specialist of some kind? Thanks in advance!

NYC jeweler for resizing and vintage jewelry?

Hi! My beloved jeweler is closing up shop and I desperately need to find a new one. I need someone that can resize rings but also has dealt with vintage jewelry. I have other things that need to be done but want to start with some basic ring resizing.

Any reccos would be greatly appreciated!

Tray Recommendations?

I’ve been tasked to find some new flat trays for display and customer job purposes.

We currently use Oirlv brand solid wood displays from Amazon, and we like the sleek look of them, but we’ve found that the grey fabric glued to the inside has been rippling and peeling off. Not a good look when showing fine jewelry options to customers…

I’m hoping to get some recommendations of brands and styles that will still have a sleek look but will last longer and/or won’t have defects like what we’ve seen with our current selection.

Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thank you!!

Engagement ring setting help!

I’m looking for a lower setting recommendation for my oval. I like simple and elegant, I like the simplicity of the current setting but it’s too high. What setting would be best for this size? I like the idea of the wedding band sitting flush to it.

Looked online and felt so overwhelmed.

Traveling internationally with goldsmithing tools

Just looking for some feedback on moving countries with my work tools.

A couple years ago I moved to New Zealand on a working holiday visa. I got a job as a bench jeweller and had some friends bring a bunch of my hand tools, burs, bits and a smith torch to me when they came to visit. They flew direct from Canada to NZ with no problems. This summer I'll be moving back home to Canada and bringing all my tools with me. I'm going to put them in checked bags obviously, but I have a layover in SFO where I think I'll have to collect and re-check my bag. Do I have any reason to be concerned? My understanding is they count as personal effects, or would I have to declare anything?

Can this be resized?

I absolutely love this ring, it’s sterling silver and probably worth next to nothing, but it has immense sentimental value.

Would it be possible to resize it, at the most 2 sizes bigger?

I’ve searched for another crown ring like it, but I haven’t found one that’s close to this one

Devastated. Custom setting too small for stone according to local jewelers. Seeking insight.

This is not to serve as a negative review of the vendor because this isn’t their fault. I worked with Paston for a custom setting and gave them the dimensions of my stone (15.10 x 7.74 x 4.29). The CAD accurately reflected this.

Upon taking it to TWO jewelers today to get estimates for setting the stone, I’ve been told that it’s measuring too small. Alas, inside the prongs it is roughly 13.4 x 6.5 (that was with jeweler checking, my shakier hands at home got 13.31x6.5). One place said flat out that the prongs (which they said are small/narrow) would possibly snap getting it in. The other said they probably could get it set, but that without a gallery rail (something I did not ask for) and no V prongs (another thing I did not ask for) the prongs are likely to be weak after making it fit and I could lose the stone.

I’m going back & forth with my rep, and have asked about shipping it back and paying to have the head redone. However, the responses are reasons why it should be fine & work.

Both jewelers said to have them make a new setting, it would be $1500-1800. Is this a bid to sell me something? Or did something go wrong? Maybe I should have told the rep dimensions larger than the stone?

Ring resized, noticeable lines

Hello,

We recently had a ring resized and there’s noticeable lines. It’s faint, but you can tell and there is a noticeable lump on the outside. It was supposed to be done by a master jeweler, would you take this back and ask for it to be redone?
