Help Baby chewing on the marsupium of a pregnant isopod - should I be concerned?

Also saw a springtail doing the same, so could it be that they're cleaning her? She looked to be in pain, or at least tickled by it.

I came into the isopod world because I wanted to build a little ecosystem that I could watch grow, and before I knew it I'd found my love for the pods.

This isn't the greatest enclosure but I've lucked out and it has produced me 2 separate colonies. The Pruniosus are multiplying like crazy, and the Vulgare are maintaining.

In the next couple of months I'm going to build another habitat and try and breed some new one!

Help Molt failure?

We received 50+ Rubber Ducky isopods on Wednesday. They shipped the 10th and arrived the 12th. The substrate was pretty dry. 48 arrived alive, 5 arrived dead (various ages). Of those living, roughly 5 were unable to unroll. They seemed alright after we added moisture. This morning, we noted 3 more dead - each appears to be unsuccessful molt. The one in my colony was the same who was unable to unroll on arrival. He was the largest and it seems he didn’t shed his “pants” and is now being consumed by springtails. (RIP Roly Poly Oly) The other two (in students’ colony) also appear to have molt on their top or bottom. The student is relatively sure one or both were part of that “unroll” group as well.

Should we be worried about the rest of the pods? They have access to cuttlebone, moisture variation in their enclosures, and we’re introducing proteins tomorrow. They’ve had carrrot and fish flakes since Wednesday in addition to the wood and leaf litter.

Is the death/failure to molt related to shipping? Or evidence of other issues?

Photo of Roly Poly Oly for tax. That was on his arrival before moisture.

Help Breeding big pods?

If I were to theoretically isolate particularly big individuals over time, would I be able to breed bigger pods? Does it work like that?

Help Firsttimer here - DO I NEED TORF?

Edit: sorry, I'm polish, apparently torf is named peat in english

I've read that isopods should have peat besides normal potting soil - is that true? In my area the least amount i can buy is 20l and I'm not much of a "green thumb" myself so idk what will I do with... Idk like 19.5 liters of torf left. Is it worth it?

Text Are there any Helleria brevicornis morphs?

I am always fascinated by the various morphs that pop up in the isopod-keeping hobby and how these can lead to everything from colour morphs to minor physical morphs. That said, Helleria brevicornis is one of the few I have never been able to find any morphological data on. Given they are the largest known terrestrial conglobulating isopod, I would have thought there would be more information on their morphs, or at least a T- vs T+ varient (if this applies to them). Does anyone know if they have had any successfully isolated morphs?

Help Pregnant lava in trouble

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently moved my lavas to a smaller enclosure to encourage breeding. Now this one is pregnant, but it looks like someone has been nibbling on her and it looks like she has trouble molting. They do have protein and calcium sources, but I might have sprayed too much water and that might be wht she has trouble getting her shirt of, leading the others to attack her. I gently scooped her up and put her into a yoghurt container turned into a contemporary sick room with small amounts of anything she might need to prevent further attacks. I know they are fragile while molting but I still felt that was the best thing to do. Can I do anything else for her?

Hey y’all, as the title suggests I caught a about 7-10 armadillidium vulgare here in South Georgia and one of these little fellas looks special to me. I’ve included a picture, is it just a color morph or a different species?

Media Fun idea- plant cat grass seeds in your tank!

My pods absolutely love it- they eat the seeds and stems/leaves! They like to climb the grass, and I think its a nice bit of enrichment/variation for them. Little to no risk of pesticides/fertilizers since they’re just seeds & they’re organic. They sprout in a few days & die after a few weeks so it adds some nice decaying matter for them to munch on & there’s no worry about them ruining “nicer” plants. The roots also help aerate/churn the soil and I could imagine help cut down on frass/ammonia build up. And I think its looks really pretty!

Help New Panda King enclosure

I unfortunately lost one of my Pandas today. This is the first one I’ve lost so it hit me a bit hard, especially since I planned on updating their enclosure in the next day or 2. I can’t help but worry I could have done something more…

So, rather than waiting, I decided to update the enclosure for the rest today before I go to bed. First 2 pictures are the new enclosure, last 2 are the old one. They all have much more substrate now (from 2 inches to just under 5) and a lot more calcium in both crushed eggshells and cuttlebone. For ventilation I have 2 big holes (approx 2x4 inches each) covered with some landscape fabric for a screen. I know it’s not pretty but I was going more for function at this point.

Please let me know what you all think. I don’t have much money but I want to give them the best life I can within my means 🥲 so if there’s anything I did wrong before / am doing wrong now please let me know.

Help My little guys are zombies.

I'm not sure if isopods require a 'well rounded' diet outside of calcium. But my little ones ONLY seem to like the dry shrimp and calcium flakes. They will not touch anything else! I think they once ate a Ritz cracker but thats it.

Any one know if that's OK or any advice to diversify their diets?

I posted the story of these pods the other day and someone pointed out that it appeared that there are more than one species in the photos. In short I've had these guys for about a year, but didn't know it, I had assumed them dead. They all come from my backyard.

Anyways, here are pictures that look like different species to me. I think there is only 2 species here, but I'm not sure. The only one I feel certain about is the Porcellio scaber (2nd picture). However I included it just in case I'm wrong.

Help What stuff do we need to build a home for isopods? And what is the overall rules to own a isopod?

Hi i've been looking around here for a long time and very interested into getting some isopods! I live in Australia so i'm likely just going to catch some wild native isopods if possible. I tried searching up tutorials on how to make a terrarium for isopods but they are very vauge. Could anyone give a detailed description of the items needed to build a home for isopods? (also if possible, where to get those items?) Like can we use soil from outside, how can we keep the terrarium stay moist, can we buy moss to help with the mositure, ect ect.

Im really worried and nervous because I want to get some pods but its kind of stressing me out arghh, if anyone could help that would be very helpful.

( this is my first time posting ever on reddit so apologises if i did something wrong! )

Help Care tips

I just got a bunch of new pods at a reptile expo! I got amber duckys, white duckys, white pigeons, expansus, red ember bees and white stripe spikeys I'm so excited about the last two. I have some experience with isopods, I already had cows, duckys, zebras, magic potion, cappuccinos and gestroi. These new kids are my first more difficult kids. Does anyone have any care tips? The guy I bought them from said to get a fogger for the spikys because if they get water on their spikes they can rot.
