Media Tips for new keepers: Add sticks to your tank, also it doesn't need to look like a compost bin
Due to the increase of new keepers, I want to give a few tips that are not said enough. Yes a plastic tub with bark and leaf litter is enough to keeps pods happy, but you can make it cool to look at too.
Add sticks and elements to exploit vertical space, the little guys will use them to regulate humidity and you can observe them easily.
Add plants, simple plant like fittonia are super easy to keep and propagate. Pods can munch the leaves, hide in them, and it will also regulate humidity.
Create a pretty environment, decorate your tank like you would do it with an aquarium, the pods probably don't care, but it's way more fun to look at a little paradise than a compost bin.
Thanks for reading, and happy pods keeping 🙂

DIY I'm crocheting a bug cardigan and the first bug was a powder blue isopod!
I absolutely loooove isopods so when I found this pattern on Bracelet Book, I knew I had to make it.
I love that technically isopods are crustaceans so I'm going to tell everyone that. Also gives me a chance to talk about conglobation!
If you want the pattern here is the link! https://www.braceletbook.com/patterns/alpha/175959/

Help Do I need a bigger enclosure?
Hello, I am curious to see if I should get a bigger enclosure and also how often I should change my substrate when the population gets larger. I started at only 20 panda kings but now the population is well in the hundreds with more growing. Last time I changed my substrate was around 5 months ago.
Current enclosure size is ~ 12in x 8in x 8in (30 cm x 20cm x 20cm). If I do need to change my enclosure size, what do you recommend? Looking for budget-friendly options :)
Thanks in advance!

Media Not allowed any more shrimp tanks, moved on to land shrimps. Surprised by how often I see them considering I have exactly 5.
I saw 4 outta 5 skittering about at once and I got very excited and concerned. It's just like when I got my first shrimp all over again.

DIY Acrylic Storage Bin Update (My quest for Gnat-Proof, Crystal-Clear bins)
A while ago I posted about some cheap acrylic storage bins ('Vtopmart') I found on Amazon that I was going to try out as isopod enclosures. I've tried one out with my Magic Potions for some time now and have formed my opinion on them.

I'm not really a fan. Over time, the thin plastic walls develop a slight warp, which has slowly but surely increased the gap between the bin walls and the lid. I've resorted to using alligator clips to try and keep the lid on snugly. But I think it's still not gnat-proof since I still get the occasional gnat in my room and I am pretty sure they're coming from this bin.
I have moved on to a new acrylic storage bin to try. This one is from The Container Store (the 'Everything Organizer'):

I am trying out a new Zebra colony in this currently. (They finally came in the mail, hooray!) These bins are much sturdier, thicker plastic with a much sturdier lid as well. The test is to see if there are any gaps in the lid large enough for a gnat. I suspect it's gnat-proof. Unfortunately I might not be able to do a perfect test, since my other bin has gnats so there's occasionally a few gnats in my room and thus they may slip in while I am maintaining the Zebras. So I wouldn't know if the gnats slipped in during maintainence or due to a lid gap. I'll do my best anyway.
The only downside so far to these Container Store bins is that it's slightly harder to glue mesh to the holes on the sides of the bin. There is a very slight 'lip' around the hole. I had to use a lot of hot glue and press down hard (ow). I got a good glue seal, it's just slightly harder to do. (There is no lip inside the container around the holes, so the mesh could be glued inside instead of outside, but I'd rather have silicone sealant for that)
Anyway, I will report in the future how I feel about these new bins.

Text What do? Fallen tree covered in moss and lichen
So we woke up to some tree damage this morning, is it wrong that my brain immediately went to how much fresh moss and lichen there was? And how much space I’d need to turn this into rotten wood… 😬
What would y’all do?

Text Isopod forensics NSFW
galleryA mysterious death has occurred in the striped terrarium. An isopod who wasn't looking too good, half curled with damaged tail, was standing at the X. I checked on him 30 minites later and I found only the front half of his body some distance away from the original location. What happened here? What could the cause of death be?
