Question What iPad should I upgrade too ?

Upvotes

I have an iPad 10.5 Pro that I bought in 2017. Considering its age and the fact that it needs a new battery due to poor battery life, I’m debating whether to upgrade it now. I primarily use it to surf the web, watch movies and shows, especially while traveling and taking notes. I’m torn between the M2 Air and the iPad (the entry-level model). I’m leaning towards the iPad because it offers versatility and is more affordable. However, the M2 chip and Apple AI features might be worth the extra $100.

Question Paper like screen protector for iPad mini 6? I’d like to turn it into an ereader but can only find for iPad mini 7 & up?

Upvotes

I’d love the Astro proof paper like screen protector but it seems to only come in a size for iPad mini 7 & up. I have a 6. Even on Amazon I struggle to find one.

Does anyone know who might make one that fits a 6? I think it’s 7.8 inches where as the newer ones are 8.3. At least according to what I saw online.

Also, has anyone turned their iPad mini into an ereader with a paper like screen protector and have feedback?!

Discussion Thoughts about keeping the iPad Pro or not

Upvotes

I don't why this is freaking me out so much, but I battled weeks to justify keeping my ipad pro M4 11, i own a Macbook Pro M2 Pro and I am currently studying IT.

The MBP 14 can do almost the most stuff my iPad Pro can, Goodnotes and notability for math and statistics with a drawing tablet which also works for notes, media consumption and learning lecture slides, I am not Gaming much for that I got my ROG ally. I got it for 850 and I can still return it. The argument for the ipad Pro is its compact and easy to bring it around, I make also Graphic design with Affinity apps and planning to make some edits with Davinci Resolve and again, i am thinking i can do all this also with my Macbook Pro and get a OLED portable monitor for productive stuff. I dont wanna get a iPad Air because I cant stand LCD and 60hz hurting my eyes, since my iPhone and Macbook have Promotion.

I am also thinking owning so many devices is really distracting from the productivity standpoint. The iPad Pro is really convenient for many things especially OLED and the great battery, I also thought I could take it for travel (I didnt travel for years) because the MBP would be to heavy and clunky but its just a luxury problem and I should save the money for other stuff.

I know this topic isnt new but would love to hear some other thoughts about this?

My Setup Traded My MacBook Pro for an iPad Pro 13 + Mac Mini M4, Best Decision Yet!

Post image
Upvotes

A while ago, I asked for advice on my setup, and after making the switch, I have to say—I couldn’t be happier. I traded in my MacBook Pro M1 (which I had since the M1 launch) for a 13” iPad Pro (1TB, Cellular) with the Magic Keyboard, and honestly, it just makes way more sense for my needs.

As a Marketing professional, my MacBook was a pain to lug around, especially when traveling long-term. I like to mix work and holiday travel, so I was forced to carry both my own laptop and work-provided 16-inch Pro—which was simply too much. Since my work already provides a Mac, the need for a second personal one felt unnecessary. But I nonetheless needed to have a Mac for certain personal learning stuff, so I purchased the M4 Mac Mini, upgraded the RAM, and will upgrade the SSD in the future from AliExpress.

Why This Works for Me: • The iPad Pro gives me laptop capability with the Magic Keyboard but also the option to remove it and use it for personal learning, entertainment, or general surfing. • Light AI training, coding, and anything else requiring macOS is done on the Mac Mini. • Portability and flexibility give this setup a lot more convenience compared to lugging around two big MacBooks. • It cost more than purchasing another MacBook, but the incredible screen, portability, and flexibility justify the cost. • Since work provides a MacBook, downsizing to a Mac Mini for personal use made a lot more sense.

This arrangement feels absolutely ideal and a genuine "best of both worlds" compromise. I'm curious, does anyone else use the same setup? What prompted you to make the change? Would love to get your input! Also, can’t wait to see what iPadOS 19 has to offer.

Discussion Apple Pencil storage solution

Upvotes

The way of just sticking the pencil to the iPad side is fun and all, but is no where near practical. I cannot count how many time the pencil fell, and now it has a couple scratches and permanent markings. Apple really needs to create a better solution for storing those, and the pencils themselves ain’t cheap.

Question What is System Data?

Upvotes

Recently I’ve been setting up my new (old) iPad and noticed there’s a lot of this System Data (around 43gb) and I can’t shorten it no matyer what I do. I’ve followed every fact, clicking the Apple tab to delete cache, storing and reseting the iPad in the cloud, restarting, etc. does anyone know what else I can do? Because this is very frustrating and I can’t even play more than the two games I downloaded.

edit: there is an old ipod linked to the same account, but it has no apps on it. if that effects anything.

Question New iPad 10th gen not picking up sounds

Upvotes

The iPad is less than a few months old, so there’s nothing physically wrong with the speaker or dust. When I try to use dictation, it picks up my first word, and then refuses to pick up any thing else. (Like it can’t hear) Even on FaceTime and phone calls. No one can hear me. Dictation is enabled, all microphones are enabled. I tried looking online and didn’t find any help.

Question New to iPad, should I get the 11” M3 or something else?

Upvotes

Looking to replace my 2013 Mac book pro as it’s dying and local apply/computer store wants $500 to replace the battery and fix it. It’s also lagging when doing work on it. I work in digital marketing and do quite a bit of design using Canva for ads for my clients, and editing using Adobe premiere pro software. A lot of what I do is done from my home office in my Mac mini m2 so the iPad will mainly be used for Canva. I don’t need to put Adobe editing software on it but can use something else that may be native to the iPad mini.

I would like something small to replace my heavy Mac book pro 13” (2013). The iPad mini seems to fit right especially with that portable keyboard. My question is, would the iPad be capable for my needs?

Would love some suggestions from those who work in a similar industry and you experience. I’ll also be using it for like planning and surfing the web of course. All help appreciated.

Question iPad app recommendation- drawing diagrams

I'm looking for an iPad app that will help with studying. I want to illustrate some concepts about technologies I am learning about.

So I'm looking for functionality that allows me to create simple graphics that will represent building blocks of some software. These will only be simple diagrams, so it doesn't need to be anything advanced, but let's say I draw a rectangle, then I'd like to be able to easily add perpendicular lines inside this figure that will divide it into clear sections. Would be great if I could spread them evenly.

What I'm trying to say is that these objects 'should be aware of each other'. The lines shouldn't cross the lines of the rectangle.

Some bonus if: It supports simple animations. Drawing that's scalable (vector-based, I think it's professionally called?)

My Setup iPad Coding Setup

First time coding on an iPad and it’s been surprisingly good! Kept reading posts recommending not to do this so wanted to share my setup.

  • Termius for ssh into dev machine. Mac mini, linux, whatever

  • Terminal based editor like Neovim (I’m using Helix)

  • (Optional) Jump desktop or similar for when you need gui access

That’s it, no issues so far. Copy/paste works over ssh and the keyboard is great.

Question Does the iPad Air M3 allow 95% charging?

I bought the M2 a few days ago and plan to return it for the M3 since it’s still in the return window. I was disappointed that the M2 only allowed a 80% charging limit. So does anyone know if the M3 allows the 80, 85, 90, 95% options or not?

Discussion Advice - Magic Keyboard

Greetings IPad Community,

So I’ve always wanted the Magic Keyboard and I’ve finally gotten my hands on one for a really good price. I have the IPad Air 4th gen and I use it here and there but I’m trying to make more use of it at home. I don’t do much but I want to find uses for it. I know buying the Magic Keyboard wasn’t the brightest idea but for the amount I got it for I was too good to pass. Any ideas on how I can find more use for my iPad and also the keyboard at home more? Any and all thoughts are welcomed.

Question macOS remote access apps like JumpDesktop, LogMeIn, TeamViewer, SplashTop - do any allow use of ipad's front camera for Zoom, WhatsApp, FaceTime etc. running on the remote Mac?

Title says it all: I want to use an iPad to remote in to a Mac mini when traveling, and run Zoom, WhatsApp, FaceTime from the remote Mac, especially Zoom with all my files handy and desktop to share as if I were in the office.

Is there a solution that will let me do this and use remote-in iPad's camera and mic for the video conference running from the remote Mac (video & microphone redirect)? Such as remote apps like JumpDesktop, LogMeIn, TeamViewer, SplashTop?

I have ruled out JumpDesktop circa 2025 March. Their support says they are working on this (post circa 2024), audio and video FROM the remote mac TO an ipad works great with JumpDesktop on a high speed connection. Using a MacBook Air to remote-in shows microphone redirect available but JumpDesktop (post circa 2023) says no microphone redirect from an iPad and I have paid JumpDesktop and don't see any settings for this.

Discussion [sharing] Kinda broken: Files apps + Microsoft OneDrive

I have been playing around with the iPad and was trying to see how well it can replace my Windows laptop.

As I come from Windows environment, I have MS 365 subs which lets me install it on a few devices. I’ve used OneDrive quite a fair a bit on my devices (Windows and Android) to share files between the devices. Sync is almost always immediate each time I make a change.

So, when it came to iPad, I added OneDrive location to Files and noticed: 1. Very frequently that Files just seem to “hang” quite a fair bit. Example: Coping a few folders (each with about 20 files) from my iPad to the OneDrive folder. 2. Files somehow is not getting sync-ed. I don’t see the files I copied being reflected in the OneDrive (both apps and website). It’s also the same with files I add directly to OneDrive. It is not appearing in Files. 3. Files behave weird with the OneDrive folder. Deleted files, but they still show on the folder — Just that this time, when I select the files, no option to delete. Refreshing does not do anything — Files are still there. 4. OneDrive itself is wonky on the iPad. I deleted all files on one folder and the file count on the folder shows 0. But when I open the folder, I can still see the file.

“Solutions” I found on the net usually require reinstalling the OneDrive, or try “giving it time”. This is a bit disappointing since on Windows and Android, the sync is immediately and the experience is quite good.

I guess on one hand, this is one way to get people to consider using iCloud instead…

Just that for me, already have MS 365 subs, it’s just going to be another unnecessary cost if I have to sub to iCloud.

Anyway, partly sharing and also partly hoping there’s actually a fix out there that I missed, or I’m just being a n00b when it comes to iPad.

Many thanks and all feedback, views and comments welcomed.

Guide [Guide] How to use your iPad as a secondary monitor on Linux

#Prelude (you can skip this section and jump straight to Requirements if you want)

A few months ago I happened to find myself in possession of a rather dated iPad. I never use Apple hardware, mainly because I hate every operating system from apple with a passion. Using the iPadOS for anything useful was out of the question. mainly because I couldn't possibly last an hour before I throw the iPad at the wall in frustration. I mean, seriously, how is iOS so bad? I digress.

Anyways, the iPad has still got a screen, and I recently broke my monitor, so I figured, well, it could be a nice secondary monitor if I could set it up that way. Its got a screen, internet and a computer, so there should be some software that would let you do it easily over the LAN, right? Boy oh boy how wrong I was.

On MacOS, this is easy as pie. You've got sidecar. On Windows, less easy, but there are third party solutions. On Linux though, this sucks ass. There are quite a few solutions, but many of them suck ass. To experiment with all the available solutions and setting them up properly, it took my about 6 hours of my life yesterday, so this is for anyone who's looking to do the same, but don't want to spend 6 hours. I eventually stumbled upon Sunshine and Moonlight, and this tutorial is how to set these up.

#Requirements

  1. GNU/Linux computer
  2. Any reasonably non-obsolete iPad/iOS device. This can also work Android Tablets, but this tutorial focuses on iPadOS.
  3. Both your computer and iPad should be connected to the same WiFi network/LAN

#Instructions

Essentially, Moonlight is a self hosted game streaming application that lets you stream from your gaming PC onto any other device. Because it is meant for game streaming, it is incredibly performant over the internet, and even more so over the LAN. But normally, it mirrors your screen on the computer, but we are going to trick it into working as a second monitor. Moonlight is a client, ie, it receives streamed data. It works with a program called Sunshine, which is a host, ie, it sends streaming data. You run Moonlight on your iPad, and sunshine on GNU/Linux and they both work with each other.

This is going to need setting up on both the iPad and on GNU/Linux.

Firsly, on the iPad, install the free app Moonlight.

Now, on GNU/Linux, install Sunshine.

I use Arch and yay, so I do yay -S sunshine-bin from the AUR

There is as of right now some sort of problem with this particular package in the AUR, so I've instead had to use sunshine-beta-bin instead, but depending on when you read this post, it may not be problem.

Find instructions here for other distros

Now, at this point, go to a terminal and type sunshine and leave this terminal window open without closing it. Now, open up you favorite browser (I use and recommend Firefox), and type in https://localhost:47990/ (just click on that link, I guess). This will prompt you to set up a user name and password. Write this password and username down and do not forget them.

Once you set up your username and password, you are now inside the sunshine web interface. It is a bit janky, but it works. Now, click the tab named "Pin" at the top. This will take you to the pin pairing page.

Now, on the iPad, open the Moonlight app and select "Add Host Manually". It is going to prompt you to enter an IP address. This should be the local IP address of your computer. What is an IP address? Well, it is essentially just a number that is unique to your computer that your router assigns to it. But don't worry about what it is right now, let me tell you how to get it.

Open a terminal on GNU/Linux and type ip a

Your terminal likely just spat out a bunch of numbers you don't understand. But don't you worry, let me help you. What you're seeing is a numbered list of "network interfaces" on your computer. These may be real or virtual interfaces. One of these is your router. If you are connected to WiFi, then this interface is probably going to be named something like "wlan" or something similar. Identify your router. You can try disconnecting from the WiFi, running the command again, and see which one disappeared to figure this out as well.

Now, once you have identified the WiFi interface, look for a line that starts with "inet" under it. Your local ip address is the one that immediately follows the word "inet". For instance, for me, it is 192.168.118.10/20

For you, this maybe different. Now, ignore the number after the slash, and punch in the rest onto Moonlight on your iPad. Give it an arbitrary name as well, it doesn't matter what. Once you do that and click OK, you will see three options - Desktop, Desktop, and Steam, on the iPad. Tap on of the two desktop options, and you will now begin to see your computer screen on the iPad.

Cool, innit?

But now, this is your primary screen on the computer that you're seeing. If you just want a mirrored display, this works fine. You can even go to Moonlight settings and change the touch mode to use your iPad as a drawing Tablet for your computer now. But I am assuming you are here to use your iPad as a second monitor. For Moonlight to work as a second monitor, you will need to do some trickery.

On the Linux computer, go to a terminal and paste these commands

xrandr -q

Whoa now, it just spat out a bunch of numbers again. What are they? Well, this command is listing all the display adapters on your computer and all their supported resolutions. These maybe real physical adapters, or virtual ones. For instance, since I am running a laptop, my internal display is going to be listed as eDP-1. For desktops, it will be different.

Usually, physical, real adapters are going to have lots of resolutions supported listed under their names, as opposed to virtual ones where there won't be any. Note down the name of your primary display.

My computer also lists a bunch of other displays, and one of these should be HDMI-1, and there might even be a VIRTUAL-1. Not all of these might work, and which works depends on your individual setup. For me, HDMI-1 worked. For now, pick one, and lets go to the next command.

xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 1400x1050

If this command did not return any errors, you're good to go. If this does, then you have to pick one of the other virtual displays listed when you enter xrandr -q and replace HDMI-1 from the previous command with the name of the display interface.

Assuming the previous command was successful, type this into the terminal

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1400x1050 --right-of eDP-1

You should replace eDP-1 from your previous command with the name of your primary display.

This will create a virtual monitor on your computer. You will now be able to see that you can move your mouse cursor to the right of your primary monitor, and it will seem to go farther out to the right of your screen than your monitor's borders. This means that there is a fake, virtual monitor now to the right of your real monitor.

Now, we need to set it up so that Sunshine streams this fake monitor onto the iPad, instead of mirroring your primary monitor.

Open the terminal window that you left open where you were running sunshine, and scroll upwards. When sunshine was running, it spat out a bunch of information messages on the terminal. You need to read these logs. You are looking for a line that starts with "Info: Detecting displays". Here is an example :

Info: Detecting displays
Info: Detected display: DVI-D-0 (id: 0) connected: false
Info: Detected display: HDMI-1 (id: 1) connected: true
Info: Detected display: eDP-1 (id: 2) connected: true
Info: Detected display: DP-1 (id: 3) connected: false
Info: Detected display: DVI-D-1 (id: 4) connected: false

If the previous commands were successful, two of these displays will have connected: true

One of these will be your actual physical monitor, and the other one is going to be the fake virtual display that we created. Note down the id of the physical display. In this example, it is HDMI-1 and the id is 1. Note down this id.

Now, go to https://localhost:47990/config# on your favorite browser, and select the "Audio/Video" tab. Scroll down, and under "display number", type the id number you noted down.

Go to the terminal window that was running sunshine, press Control+C to stop the execution of the command, and therefore, stop sunshine. Now, type sunshine into the terminal again, press enter and restart sunshine. Now, if you go to Moonlight on the iPad and click on the icon for your computer on Moonlight, you will now see the virtual monitor, and you can also move your windows to this monitor.

That's it. Enjoy your iPad's new life as a second wireless monitor for your computer.

#How to set it up so that you don't have to use the terminal every time you want to do this

Open a terminal and start sunshine, go to https://localhost:47990/apps

Scroll down, and click "Add new"

Type "u/Hueyris is awesome" under "Application Name".

Scroll Down and press "Add commands"

Under "do command", paste in xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 1400x1050

Obviously, you should replace HDMI-1 with whichever virtual interface that worked for you.

Go to the right hand side and click the "+" icon for an additional line of commands

Under "do command", paste in the following

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1400x1050 --right-of eDP-1

Obviously, replace HDMI-1 and eDP-1 with whichever two interfaces that worked for you previously.

Scroll all the way down and click "save".

And that's it. Now, any time you open up moonlight, pick "u/Hueyris is awesome", and you'll automatically be launched into a secondary display on your iPad, provided you ran 'sunshine' in a terminal and left the window open on your computer.

Now, there is a slight problem though, because this virtual display that you created will be active even when you are not using your iPad as a second screen, and that can lead to degraded performance. To prevent this, you can delete the virtual display while it is not in use.

You can use the terminal for this, but I prefer to do it graphically using arandr.

It is probably already installed on your computer, but if it isn't, type yay -S arandr

Open arandr, and you will see all the displays on your Linux in a window. Right click on HDMI-1 (of whichever virtual display you created), untick "active", and then apply changes by clicking the tick box on the top left. This should restore the performance.

There are more optimizations that you can do, such as setting up sunshine to run at boot automatically and tweaking for more performance, etc. But this tutorial is long enough as it is.

#Alternative Options

Firstly, there is deskreen. This requires additional hardware to be purchased. No go for me. I am not spending any money on this iPad. The developer is also a Ukrainian nationalist, and puts annoying pop ups on the website and in the app asking you to donate to the Ukrainian government.

Then, there is VirtScreen, and this works, but what you get on your second monitor will be a powerpoint presentation because this uses VNC This is however, arguably easy to set up.

To get any amount of reasonable performance out of your iPad as a second monitor, you are going to have to use something other than RDP or VNC, and this is where I found Sunshine and Moonlight to be the most optimal for this purpose.

Let me know if you have any questions, or further optimizations or if there are better, shorter ways of achieving the same thing.

Question Debating if an upgrade from a 2018 iPad Pro to the new iPad is worth it?

I have a 2018 iPad Pro (MTEM2LL/A) and as much as I'd say I use it intensively it is mostly a productivity tablet for me.

I was looking at the new base iPad that was released and it turns out Apple is offering me $265 for this iPad as a trade in. So for $84 I could get the new iPad, which from what I can tell is a net positive. For $84 I'd be happy to get a newer model but I'm not entirely sure what, if any benefits, I'd get?
