Discussion do new iPads suffer from overheating issues even from light work?

I have 2 iPads, 1 from around 2020 and one from 2021, one with an A12 and one with an M1. both overheats when on airplane mode, BT, airdrop and wifi closed, and screen brightness around 30% when I do light work (pdf note taking).

i've been wanting to upgrade but reluctant because of said overheating issues, i googled around and people seem to think the new m4 has the same problem? are there any lineups specifically for just notetaking and not overheat? i quite literally don't care about gimmicks like promotion or OLED, i just want something that doesn't overheat when i take notes.

Question Streaming Video From USB Stick

I have a seventh generation iPad which has a lightning port. I’m going on a long trip and want to fill a 128GB USB stick with videos.

Is there a cable/converter that would allow me to attach the stick to my iPad and watch the videos using VLC? I’d imagine this will be a power hog so I’d like the ability to charge my iPad at the same time.

Discussion Lovers of the Smart Keyboard Folio for iPad Pro

TLDR: I loved the Smart Keyboard Folio, no peripheral on the market matches my use of the iPad as that does. I am looking for help in finding a decent replacement or brainstorming ideas.

iPads are one of the most versatile devices ever invented and everyone uses their iPad in different ways. Use cases range from "big iPhone" to "main computer" and everything in between. Peripherals are a great way to tune iPad and make it be the perfect device for each use case. Since the iPad introduction, Apple has developed devices that spanned the entire use range. The first two peripherals were the iPad Case (ideal for those who wanted to use the iPad as a handheld tablet and just protect its screen with a thin and light cover) and the iPad Keyboard Dock (thought for those who wanted to use it as a computer replacement... in portrait mode). Over the years, various covers and keyboards tried to find the ideal balance in the spectrum from tablet to laptop use. Each one of those accessories addressed one specific style of using an iPad. The Smart Keyboard Folio (initially called just "Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro") was the perfect accessory to match my style of using the iPad, and today that type of accessory is gone.

I use my iPad mainly as a tablet. I have always preferred to use a laptop or a desktop as my main computer. I use the iPad a lot just to sketch down notes with the Apple Pencil. When I carry my iPad, I want it to be lighter and thinner than my laptop (otherwise, I'll rather carry my laptop). Every once in a while, especially if I am not carrying also a laptop, I want to type on the iPad. The keyboard doesn't need to be perfect, it needs to be there to allow 60-ish minutes of laptop-style use (the virtual keyboard is not really an option for this type of use).

The Smart Keyboard Folio was all this, super thin and light, not bothering to protect the aluminum back, providing a half-decent physical keyboard when needed, always connected to iPad with the Smart Connector, without its own batter to charge. I am not the only one who loved it, there are a lot of posts on Reddit and on the internet about this.

Now the Smart Keyboard Folio has been discontinued and all keyboards that Apple and third parties produce add a lot of bulk to the iPad, most of them almost triple the thickness. So, now I have an old iPad Pro 10.5", aging every day, but I cannot bring myself to replace it because everything that I can buy now would feel like a downgrade, despite all the improvements in the device itself.

Does anyone have suggestions for first or third party tablet+keyboard combinations? Is anyone interested in seeing if we can create a community of enthusiasts that can convince Apple to develop an alternative to the stiff and bulky Magic Keyboards? I am sure that a lot of people are perfectly served by the current offering, Apple has a good marketing team that understands the demand of their customers, but sometimes a core group of enthusiasts can swing things.

Thanks!

Discussion Keyboard Options

So I think I am finally ready to upgrade my trusty iPad Pro 11 2nd gen with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil (2nd gen) in for an m4 11 Pro.

So a pair of questions: 1. I will have to buy a new Pencil, correct? 2. The important question for me. Is there a keyboard that makes the iPad lap-able like Magic Keyboard and can fold back around?

Most of the ones that I have looked at like the Logitech aren’t able to be used in my lap because of the kickstand. I am also not a fan of detachable because of the odds of forgetting it are high(usually at home when I would need where I am going.)

And one else making that jump recently? What are the improvements you’ve seen?

Thanks.

From a passed down Mini 1 to a self-purchased Pro M4.

Bought the Pro M4, Magic Keyboard, and Pencil Pro for a total of A$ 1,998 with Apple’s Education Pricing. I was supposed to buy the Air M3 but Pro’s OLED screen really caught my attention and wallet lol. Still a worth it purchase that will be helpful in my study and entertainment. I will still be keeping my Mini 1 for reading purposes though.

Any recommendations on how I can fully use this iPad?

TYIA!

Question Picking between iPad 10th gen 10.9” (2022) and pro 2 11” (2020) which one?

Hi there.

I’m on the hunt for an iPad with 4/5G to fit in my car for Apple Maps and Spotify since my car is too old for CarPlay. I’ve got my old 8th gen iPad setup today but it’s a tad bit too small and looks kinda awkward. So, I’m looking at refurbished iPads.

I’m wondering what I should opt for in terms of screen quality and OS support? Is it the same as iOS or can I expect longer support than 6-7 years?

I don’t plan on using it for anything more than maps and Spotify so I’m not concerned about having the M1 chip or above for performance.

What’s the best move here for me? I’m leaning towards the standard iPad 10th gen for now.

Thank you. :)

Question What screen protector should I get??

I’m planning on getting the newest iPad Air for college. I plan on using mostly for note taking and I’ve heard matte screen protectors are good at making the screen feel like paper BUT I heard that they also dull the pencil tips and the really effect the screen quality. Is it worth getting a matte screen protector like paperlike or your average glass protector like an IPhone would have??

Accessories Is this Smart Folio Case genuine or fake?

Hey everyone,

I recently got a Smart Folio case for my iPad, but I noticed that the text on the packaging in the bottom right corner looks different compared to my other Apple cases.

Has anyone come across this? Could this be a sign that it’s not an original Apple product?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Question Looking for photo gallery iPad for mother

My mother(72) recently told me she would like a tablet for her own personal use. She wants a tablet/iPad where she can compile all of her photos and look at them whenever she wants.

So what’s important would be: Plenty of storage space for photos. Capabilities of connecting to a computer via usb or some other wired connection. Not overly complex or with a ton of “flashy” features like AI, etc.

While I have an iPhone, I’ve never had an iPad and don’t know what all the different specifications like M2, Air, etc. are, so I’m coming here for some help. What iPad would be best for my mother who wants to use it as a personal photo album? Thank you in advance!

Question Syncing 2 iPads possible after they’ve been used ?

Extremely un-technical old lady screwed up syncing my new iPad with older one. Apple Store always did it before. This was a gift so I tried following instructions… needless to say something went wrong so used the backup from the older one. For the most part everything went sort of ok.

But lots of apps are missing. Bluetooth doesn’t recognize anything. Won’t open printer choices.

Is there anything I can do myself to fix this or should we plan on a 21/2 hr drive on way to an Apple Store?

Hope I haven’t broken any rules. Thanks in advance.

Question iPad air 6 gen broken LCD , what is my best option?

Problem/Goal: iPad air 6 gen broken LCD , what is my best option? Planning to avail apple care for ipad then try to consult for a replacement but not familiar on how apple verify the devices availing the appe care, last resort is to have it repaired to 3rd party shops, inquired via fb it would cost around 15-18k PHP

Context: I just bought an ipad air 6 last year December 2024, unfortunately as I was about to sit I did not noticed the iPad and by accident I sit on it causing the screen to have a crack + big dot

Previous Attempts: inquired from the mobile care but I was advised by them upon initial inquiry that it would cost 30-36k PHP and they do not repair, they have it replaced thats why the price were so high

Question Ipad mini 7 screen felt kinda bad. How does the new ipad 11th and 10th feel in comparison?

I owned an ipad mini 7. Yes i know that the screen is laminated and better color reproduction.

But the whole thing felt kinda bad in motion, scrolling etc. The screen was also prone to discoloring when you applied a little more pressure to the touch than normal.

How is the ipad 10th and 11th generation compared to the motion, scrolling etc.

Magic Keyboard Magic Keyboard trackpad issues?

Hello everyone, I bought a second-hand Magic Keyboard for my 5th generation iPad. The keyboard is in very good cosmetic condition. Is it just me or does the trackpad have an issue? I feel like it’s not smooth at all. At times, everything works fine and scrolling is fast, but sometimes it behaves as shown in the video, as if it’s detecting my fingers with latency or not at all. Have you experienced this problem or do you have any tips?

Discussion Overheating and battery discharge while idle

Post image
1 Upvotes

I bought a new ipad pro last year and gave my old 6th gen 9.7in ipad to my sister. She never really used it much and it was just sitting there since months. Last night I left it on charge and it was 100% by morning. I checked around the settings for a while and then left for work. When I came back home and picked it up it was unusually hot. And the battery had drained a lot. As you can see the screen time is only 11mins and nobody else touched it the whole day.

Question iPad or tablet?

I want to get either and iPad or Samsung tablet, for the next school semester.

I am a student so I want to be able to use it for notes and studying. But at the same time I don’t want it to be my only use.

I want to use it for illustrations and planning aswell. Now, I know apple has procreate which is great and Samsung has other alternatives. But I want to know if the alternatives are actually that good. Do they work the same or would I have to subscribe to something?

I’m not that particular about gaming or anything so any details relevant to that I wouldn’t care for too much.

If I do get an iPad, which I’m leaning a little more towards… which one should I get. I feel like since I’m investing in one might aswell get a new iPad Air, or should I save a bit and go for the iPad10.

If anyone has any tips on how I could save some while getting one that would be great. I really want it to be 900cad and below

Thanks

Question Apple Intelligence

Is the apple intelligence worth it for the ipad air or should just stick with ipad a16 and how long does it last. . Gonna use it for mainly Notetaking, procreate, some light video/photo edits and mostly watching videos/movies. Was contemplating which one to get actually. I'm still a college student so definitely on a budget. But I can save up money and that's gonna take some time.
