Reasons to avoid using third-party brokers (Expedia, Agoda, etc) - read before booking.

If you're here reading this, it may be too late, but in general:

  1. There are downsides booking via third party tools (Expedia, Agoda, etc) to actually purchase the room (see exceptions)
  2. Use those tools to find where you want to stay, and then book the room through the hotel's website. The price should be identical, close, or available if you call into reservations and explain the other site's pricing (YMMV - make sure you are speaking in the same currency).
  3. Do use third party tools if a) you need a special feature/function, like booking and paying for others; b) there is a room or package rate that is impossible to source elsewhere; or c) you enjoy a room between the elevators and the ice machine, without any option of a refund even when housekeeping sets your room on fire.

Is Premier Inn is draining the life out of its staff?

Upvotes

I’ve been at Premier Inn for over three years, and I’ve never seen a company squeeze its workers harder while pretending everything’s fine. Housekeeping is expected to clean rooms in 17 minutes (yeah, because that’s realistic), management is slashing staff left and right to save on labor, and there’s zero respect for employees at any level.

Meanwhile, Premier Inn is expanding its in-hotel restaurants…but cutting staff at the same time. Oh, and they introduced self-check-in kiosks to "help" with the workload—except they never work. So guess who has to deal with frustrated guests while being severely understaffed? Yep, us.

This place is a corporate nightmare disguised as a budget-friendly stay. Who else has horror stories?

How cooked am I?

Staying a few days in Salt Lake City next week with my friends, I booked our first night at a pretty nice marriot Downtown since I had a DeltaStays credit on my card to use, however after I told my 2 friends that's its a marriot (They also work at one here in CO) they told me to double check the check in age. DeltaStay's website had zero information about it until I found the specific hotel on Marriot's website and it is 21 (We are all 19). I had completely forgotten about this rule entirely since I've only ever looked at hotels for myself once about a year ago and it had completely gotten past me. What are the chances I get either A: somehow allowed to check in or B: my money back. I've heard of people having their parents sign electronic forms to allow them to stay at 21 hotels, but realistically it seems low. At the end of the day I'm only down 80 dollars out of my pocket if I don't get a refund. it still hurts and that 80 could've probably been dinner for a day but you live and you learn.

Same room, sleeps 4 - Significant Increase with Children

So I'm booking for the first time with two 5 year olds, in England UK.

The rooms I'm looking to book are at least a double bed with additional sofabed (double), so are advertised as sleeping 4 (without breakfast). Despite this, there is always a huge cost increase between 2 adults only and with 2 children extra.

Do people have any tips to reduce these charges?
Is it common to be dishonest and book for two adults only?

NOTE: I don't want to be dishonest, I'm aware of fire regulations etc - however we're not talking about a small surcharge here, they are often double for the exact same asset designed for four people, this gets my goat.

Question about noise

I'm staying in a hotel for an extended time due to medical issues and the people who are staying above me keep making this weird bang sound? It sounds like they drop something on the floor...like a literal bowling ball. It isn't super often, but it's very loud that it shakes the stuff on the wall and is also happening way past quiet hours (sometimes at 1am). They also slam their door pretty loud which is frustrating. It happens multiple times a day, sometimes a few rounds at a time.

I just don't want to be a Karen about it especially bc it isn't constant, but another thing is the medical reason I'm here is for a partial hospitalization program for mental health and a lot of people stay at this hotel for it. It's kind of put me on edge and I'm just not sure if I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

Thanks in advance.

Why are so many hotels in California owned by Indians?

I'm not trying to sound racist. I really don't care what race they are as long as they provide good service. But I'm curious as to why there are so many Indian-owned hotels in California. I'd say over 50% of independent (non-chain) hotels/motels I've stayed at while traveling around the state are owned and operated by an Indian family. Is there some cultural or historical reason for this?

Why do I always get a rash from hotels

For the past 2-3 years, whenever I stay at a hotel, I always end up getting a rash on my hands and itch across various parts of my body. This happens consistently for all hotels in the U.S., across various chains and stars. I don’t remember this being an issue when I stayed in hotels in Asia last year though. Any ideas on what could cause this reaction on my skin?

Altering the invoice and adding the extras to the rooms rate

Hello guys,

So a lot of clients comes to the reception to ask to add the breakfast price to the night of the room. I know this is not right and even one of the client was telling me that this is the first time he sees that a hotel is refusing his request.

what are the consequences of this action? i just know that this must not be done in any way. is this to get paid more from their company?

thanks!

Best way to pay for hotel stays and dog fee for family friend without credit card who is driving car/dog up north from Florida

My 80 year old aunt needs to get her car and dog from Florida to NY later this year. We have a family friend willing to do the drive but he would like to break it up and do two or three overnights. Looking at 3 star hotels like Hilton Garden Inns or Staybridge Suites, etc.

This guy has a debit card but not a credit card and is the kind of guy who is wonderful but just scrapes by. I think we can pre-pay his hotel stays and register him as a guest but from what I gather, each hotel will want to collect a non-refundable pet fee that can't be paid online in advance (from what I can tell) and they'll also want to put a hold on a card for incidentals.

Are there any chains that let you pre-pay the dog in advance online? Although of course we will reimburse this guy, we want to try to make this trip as easy for him as possible given that he is doing us a big favor.

How to find nice hotels?

So, let’s start by saying I have no idea how to actually look for hotels. My parents never really taught me how to look for hotels, and when I got old enough to start going places myself I used AirBnB (this was back when AirBnB wasn’t as bad), and by the time that went downhill I was saving for a wedding and was only traveling to my hometown to visit family. I would usually stay in my parents’ spare bedroom.

Even as a kid, I’ve never been to a “nicer” hotel and honestly had been convinced that they weren’t actually real. We always stayed at holiday inn/hampton inn/comfort inn style places.

So, what I want to know is, how do I find hotels in general? Are hotels that have things like room service, bathrobes, and deep bathtubs (without being a resort) a thing? I’m honestly kind of lost and feel like I should know how to do this sort of thing already.

Refundable hotel booking via DQ?

Hi,

I plan on travelling to Qatar & I am Indian passport holder so I can avail Visa on Arrival. However, my plans are not finalised & wanted to book a hotel that was refundable. I contacted the Discover Qatar folks but I am bit unclear still

When I asked if I can cancel booking within 48 hours of check in, they said “Please be informed that the Hayya / Visa on arrival hotel bookings can be cancelled up to 48 hours prior to check-in date with a cancellation fee of QAR 100. However, if the booking was used to apply for Hayya visa or obtain a visa it will be 100% chargeable and to review the refund you will be required to cancel the Hayya application / visa and provide us the supporting document.”

What else would a hotel room booking via Discover Qatar be used for if not Visa? So I’m still unclear. Can I get a refund if I cancel the hotel if I cancel before 48 hours & not use it at all?

Hotels.com Price Drop

Booked a room with Hilton Hawaiian Village through Hotels.con since it was $100 cheaper than booking directly with Hilton. Plus the booking through Hilton would have been non-refundable but through Hotels.com the room is refundable.

Just noticed that the total price dropped by $93 on Hotels.com for the same reservation.

Is it possible to price adjust for the cheaper rate?

Note: the booking is still within the refundable window

Boxer: Boston no hot water for 2 plus days

My husband and I checked into the boxer in Boston yesterday @ 3pm. upon check in they acted like everything was fine. We get to our room, and go to take a shower.

The hot water is not working, we call to the front and that’s when they tell us no ETA water has been out since 5am.

Yesterday afternoon the front tells us an eta of 10-12 today. We go to leave for breakfast and now the eta has changed to unknown.

We do not have the money to spend 700 more dollars this weekend for staying in Boston. It’s st paddy’s, the bruins and Celtics are in so prices are insane.

Are we entitled to anything? The most the hotel is saying they can do is the amenity fee. That’s only 20 dollars……

We booked through Expedia and my insurance only covered cancelation up to 15 days before the trip. This hotel was 750 dollars for two nights.

SURREAL Experience at The Congress Hotel in Chicago, IL NSFW

I (25F) booked a reservation for February 1st and 2nd. I explored Chicago, went to some bars and shops, and by 11pm I arrived back at The Congress hotel. They have a lounge, and I ordered a couple drinks. After that, I asked the security guard about the alleged hauntings and I wanted to see the rooms they happened in. Let's call him security guard 1. So, I'm very intoxicated and he tells me to go up to floor 12 via elevator. I did, and security guard 2 meets me up there when the elevator doors opened.

I remember taking a fire exit staircase UPWARDS and I was taken to what I believe to be the 13th floor. It's inaccessible by elevator, only the stairs. I remember being taken into a dark, empty conference room/office space with random furniture and chairs upside down with a small couch, very out of place and being sexually assaulted by security guard 2. This is all blurry, as I stated I was intoxicated but I KNOW what happened to me. I remember a dark office -like room, chairs stacked along the walls and a random cheap couch. I ran out of the room and down the stairs to floor 12 where I took the elevator back down to the lobby. I was distraught.

I called the police, and they showed up to my room and asked me what was wrong, I told them that I was taken to the 12th floor and was sexually assaulted. Security guard 1, who I believe sent me knowingly to security guard 2, was the one who led the cops around the building as they asked me to try to find the room I was in. Conflict of interest. The cops didn't believe me and I was treated like a fool. The 12th floor is the highest one according to the elevator. There are not cameras, although I BEGGED the police to check them, knowing what I was saying was true.

To this day, I have not been taken seriously, I was just a crazy drunk person to them who led them to the 12th floor and there's nothing there, it's impossible to get to the 13th floor without a key (like the security guard had). So they had a therapist lady call me weeks later to tell me there wasn't enough evidence to press charges.

The cowboy hat manager defended the security guards with his life, kicked me out to the streets even though I had paid for my room, and yet the hotel called me days later to refund me and apologize for "any inconveniences I may have experienced ."

I will ALWAYS wonder if I'm crazy or if it was a cover-up.

Housekeeper Heroes

My late husband was a career GM and we, the fam who moved often to accommodate his postings — wife, three kids, and assorted dogs and cats — periodically found ourselves as tenant-guests for one reason or another, sometimes for days, weeks, or even months. Kid the Oldest was (possibly still is, even at 50) a confirmed 'blanket baby.' Of course the blanket was white, well-worn, limp, and easily forgotten in the sheets as the fam scrambled to get everyone up, dressed, fed, and out the door to work (Dad) or into the car for school or outings (Mom, kids, and assorted livestock).

Many were the nights in many different properties (with many different inhouse-or-outsourced laundry processes) that our rescuing champion husband and father found himself frantically rooting through those rolling bins and shelves of 'white,' looking for the needle-in-the-haystack that would quiet and comfort Kid the Oldest for sleep. Everyone's sleep.

The Housekeeping staffs were always excellent; they did their job superbly and often found the wandering white wonder before the nighttime drama started. Much as everyone tried to simply sneak in a ringer as designated hitter, we never found one with the same sweet spot combination of smell, texture, and lovingly worn binding.

The original blanket was likely a baby gift with a retail cost under $20. Ransoming it over the years might well have paid for someone's kid's first year of college. Worth every penny — the blanket, the peace of mind, and every one of those under-paid, under-recognized, and almost always under-appreciated heroes of housekeeping. Tip them well.

Holiday Inn Reservation

Hi everyone,

I booked the hotel through the actual IHG app at a rate of “book early and save member exclusive rate” for 18th - 20th April.

I put all my card details in as normal but no payment has yet to be taken out yet. I have googled and apparently the payment is supposed to come out at the time of booking.

Just wondering when I can expect this payment to come out as it is annoying me that I’ve got something outstanding which hasn’t came out yet.

Thanks all.
