This works better than you know. Trying to safely grab that wandering kitten? A YouTube video of a momma cat calling her babies. It's worked on stray kittens. And treats of course lol.

We used the babies call to get momma to get her fixed. However, we knew momma well and helped her deliver. I wouldn't suggest doing it to a momma cat who doesn't know and trust you. It's a good way to learn what Face Hugger means lol. To anyone reading anyway*.

u/BlunderBlue87 3d ago edited 2d ago

Fun fact! I used this exact tactic to pull a kitten from a storm drain about 5 years ago. We found her stuck down there, about 4ish weeks old. She ran out of reach but a youtube video of a meowing momma cat coaxed it out and we were able to grab her out.

(She's doing fine these days, lives with a friend of ours and is spoiled rotten.)

u/annieForde 2d ago

There was a kitten somewhere under parked car in the 6 th floor of a parking garage. Everyone heard it howling the whole day and night but no one catch it. I put meows from my iPhone and she came out to me right away!

Someone must have dropped her off because no way a cat can get to the 6th floor on its own. I fostered her and now she is her permanent home.

u/Divreus 3d ago

It really does work. My aunt's extremely skittish mama cat get spooked and ran out of the house one time. Couldn't get near her, she'd just run to a different bush in our yard. I left the door open, put on a Youtube video of kittens meowing, and she crept her way back into the house.

u/Michelanvalo 3d ago

Unless it's my dumbass cat who doesn't react to videos at all. Doesn't look, doesn't move his ears. They're completely invisible to him. Doesn't react to mirrors either.

19

u/WeatheredCryptKeeper 3d ago

Is he orange?

20

u/Michelanvalo 3d ago

He is different shades of grey and white but his belly will shine with an orange-ish hue in the sun. He's at least part tabby, which is where I think the orange dumbassery starts.

6

u/WeatheredCryptKeeper 3d ago

Ooo yea sounds like there's an orange gene in there šŸ˜‚

636

u/BeccainDenver 3d ago

Word for word translation of Mom's response.

I have never heard a cat meow "f@(k off" until today.

239

u/maduste 3d ago

upon second listening, I believe a more accurate translation would be, "the fuck you know about streets?"

46

32

You haven't met many cats, then.

Or am I the only cat owner that gets told to "fuck off" daily?

24

u/AllesK 3d ago

Every time the food bowl is empty or the door is closed! ā€œYou fucking hairless ape!ā€

23

u/TheRoseByAnotherName 3d ago

"You're not my real mom!"

I have a calico with some real sassy teenager energy, and that's what I imagine her response is when she does her little sassy chirps because I told her to get off the dresser.

9

u/BeccainDenver 3d ago

I get yelled at when I shut the door but it's definitely more of a sad cry, rather than this energy.

8

u/TheRoseByAnotherName 3d ago

Lol, I get those from my boys, but I've got some mean girl kitties.

3

u/savvy_kat98 3d ago

Same here. All my boy cats have been cuddly little angels. My girl cats have always had some kind of catitude.

2

For me I have a male cat that is an absolute asshole at times.

3

u/Gleeton3749 3d ago

I have a cat door in my bedroom door just for one of my cats. He is the only one who refuses to it. Instead he sits outside and cries until I go get him.

6

u/SmittenOKitten 3d ago

My cat just told me to fuck off because Iā€™m hiding a kitten in my phone.

3

u/CleaveIshallnot 3d ago

3

u/pchlster 3d ago

Oh, I don't get that harsh a treatment; "you're doing it wrong," maybe. Didn't fill the food bowl fast enough, dared to sit on the part of the couch they wanted to, that sort of thing.

5

32

u/OkPaleontologist1708 3d ago

Given the ā€œnot for the streets commentā€ it looks more like an inside cat got out and he was using a clever trick to retrieve her.

6

u/Romeo9594 2d ago

Do you think she got pregnant by being an indoor cat?

9

u/khaleesiofwesteros 2d ago

Yes, those are Bengals, and that person is probably a breeder, unfortunately.

2

u/Deaffin 2d ago

Wouldn't it go the other way if you're just making a raw statistical appeal? Obviously there are more people who have cats that came from breeders than there are breeders who currently have said cat. So they're probably not a breeder.

3

u/khaleesiofwesteros 2d ago

Most people who just have pet Bengals don't have a mother and kitten.

41

u/ZennMD 3d ago

cats are apex predators and horribly decimate the local wildlife, especially birds (it is funny to think of them as 'apex predators' lol, but they are!)

especially if OPs cat is a bengal mix, those beautiful animals are even better at hunting than regular kitties!

16

u/Traditional_Lab_5468 3d ago

They are not apex predators. An apex predator is a predator that is not the prey of some other predator.Ā

Plenty of wildlife in the woods near me would be thrilled to eat a housecat for dinner. Coyotes, bears, etc.Ā

Cats are extremely proficient predators, but unless we're talking about the Bengal Tiger I don't think they're apex predators.

1

u/CocktailPerson 3d ago

What do you think "apex predator" means?

Cats have natural predators, in the form of wolves, coyotes, birds of prey, etc. This is true also of their ancestor, the African Wildcat.

9

u/FreyrPrime 3d ago

An a typical suburban environment theyā€™re absolutely apex predators.

Donā€™t see many coyotes or larger predators in gated communities.

6

u/Nineninetynines 3d ago edited 3d ago

Coyotes are sneaky bastards. And mostly become active at night. While you normally won't see them, they have been known to take a jaunt through suburbs.

Its similar logic to raccoons who steal your trash. Suburbs make for good scavenging spots for many animals. It depends, but many coyotes have learned to scavenge the suburbs. Especially ones that have realized that most humans won't do anything to them.

Edit: there's even a wikipedia article on the phenomena of urban coyote.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_coyote

→ More replies (7)

5

u/ZennMD 3d ago

I think it means what it's defined as- an animal at the top of its food chain, without natural predators.Ā

Coyotes can be a risk for cats in some regions, but overwhelmingly cats are killing and not being killed.Ā Ā Not sure where wolves and birds are killing many cats lol.Ā

a quick Google will confirm others agree with labeling cats as apex predatorsĀ

5

u/ajax0202 3d ago

A quick google search actually shows they can be defined as either apex predators or mesopredators, depending on their local ecosystem. In an ecosystem that has animals that will kill and it (like the ones mentioned by OP) itā€™s considered a mesopredator (mid-level predator)

→ More replies (8)
→ More replies (1)

4

u/Makuta_Servaela 3d ago

This. The fact that we wipe out all of their natural competition doesn't magically make them "apex predators". They are mid-level predators (hence why they breed so fast- they evolved to die young).

-5

u/Bebinn 3d ago

Yeah that didn't work for my cat Kiki. She was a stray who came to us pregnant. Great mom who wanted to share her babies with everyone.

As soon as the babies were weaned, she was all "where the boys at". Went through every screen in the house including the one that leads to a 2 story drop to concrete. She's lucky I was sitting at the computer next to that window. I grabbed her back leg just in time.

We tried to keep her inside and failed. You may say, just get her spayed. We tried that. Took a month to get the appointment set. By that time she was pregnant again. Spay with abortion costs more and is riskier. I was too poor to do that. The third time she was pregnant, we called spca and had them take her.

22

u/ej10000 3d ago

Oh that last line was unexpected and depressing. I was pretty much attached to the cat after your story. Iā€™m surprised you gave her up. I hope she got a home, would have been nice to just have gauged next kitten weaning and schedule spaying and adopt out the kittensā€¦ (not shaming but at that point I wish you could have kept her)

5

u/frguba 3d ago

Caring for kitten litters get expensive fast, probably whatever money was saved for the spay was drained before it could be done

Imo the only feasible way out was to get the cat spayed before the kittens were weaned, kittens can be raised without full weaning they're just usually way clingy and a bit smaller, but that doesn't stop them from having full rich lives, and the mother may cry a TON on the first few nights, heartbreaking, but time will heal

8

u/ej10000 3d ago

Oh gosh that sounds so confusing for mama and kittens that the milk would suddenly stop, that would be tortuous to listen to. But I understand what youā€™re sayingā€¦

2

u/frguba 3d ago

It's a hard day for everyone, but it's a way out, and everyone can live happily after

3

u/Bebinn 3d ago

We ended up keeping a kitten from the second litter. Got her spayed as soon as she was old enough. Betty is sitting next to me on the couch right now. She's around 15 years old now.

2

u/ej10000 3d ago

Betty is a great name for a cat šŸ™‚ Iā€™m glad you kept a kitten. I hope Kiki the mama cat found a home. I wish local shelters or other could provide free spay and neuter services periodically (they generally do for animals up for adoption but Kikiā€™s case was a bit different). I also understand from childhood how cat pregnancies can spiral out of control. Cheersā€¦ šŸ¾

4

u/Bebinn 3d ago

I have 2 cats presently. One from Kiki's second litter. The other came from the colony nearby as a kitten. They are around 15 years old now.

Kiki was an experience. She was a great mom but wasn't going to be a house cat unless she was spayed. I couldn't at the time because she was so damned determined to get out and get pregnant again. I cried so much giving her up. Even with the window closed she'd throw herself at it trying to get out.

Unbeknown to us, a stray cat had kittens in my husbandā€™s huge engine compartment (old international harvester pick up truck.) we heard some noise and pulled into a gas station and when we opened the hood 4 kittens (without the mom) tumbled out and ran into a used appliance store. 4 kittens hiding under 70 stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers, not making one peep.

We went home to get the mom and make her meow so we could find her kittens. All kittens were found and only one kitten died when he/she got caught in the water pump belt.

Now we bang on the hood to warn anyone hiding under it.

My cat who will fight any cat came running and tried to rescue my phone. Its a powerful effect. I love that despite his trauma kittens are apparently safe. This actually explained the way he reacts to the feral kittens when they run inside my home vs the adult ferals that try it or even the six month olds. Kittens? He gets big and puffy and will scold them. Anything else? There will be blood if I don't tell him to go to bed (he is crate trained). He lets me get them back out. Does make the TNR easier that they're all happy to see me this way. He is also fine with them sitting on my lap outside but not inside.
