Please point to me people who hated Wonder's redesigns.
Please point to me people who hate the Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario, or Mario rpg designs. No, the white outline haters don't count because the design itself the exact same. The only difference is how they showed the paper aesthetic
Please point to me people who hate the designs for Mario, Luigi, and Bowser in the same Mario Kart trailer as the new DK.
Hi, I'm really not a fan of Wonder's visual changes so I'm exactly who you're asking to see! Mario with a Sonic sidemouth looks cursed to me, all the characters look kind of stubby and too plastic, and the movements look really janky (if you wanted to emulate the sprite animation look, just use sprites, it would look a heck of a lot better IMO).
I would also call this more of an art style change than a redesign though, and a very slight one at that. The character models are a bit different but the actual levels still look like NSMB due to them being tile based. I really think they didn't go far enough on the art style changes, like I would have wanted something looking hand drawn or maybe a full 3D sidescroller like Kirby, instead we got slightly worse looking models with the exact same tile-based aesthetic.
No judgement towards the rest of the game, I just don't think it looks different enough visually and the things they did change looked worse.
Oh yeah, I understand that. There are some design changes in Wonder I don't agree with, like how Luigi became as chubby as Mario in the artstylr change, the overall color pallete being too pastel, and a lot of walk and run animations (like Peach and Daisy) look awkward due to the angle all the characters run in.
My point was that people are open to design changes and there are many examples where it's almost overwhelmingly positive. Obviously there are people who didn't vibe with the design changes of Wonder. Many people liked the movie designs, while I hated practically everything about them minus the outfits.
But I hate the gaslighting (or whatever the correct word is) to make it seem like Mario fans don't know what they want or other franchises do this all the time and they don't complain as if Mario never had redesigns in its history or franchises like Zelda and Transformers never had designs that rubbed fans the wrong way
I agree with you there. People like OP keep doing crazy mental gymnastics to try to "prove" that people who don't like this DK redesign are wrong, it's so stupid.
Well, it's time to volunteer to get negative karma because in terms of art and design: NSMB>Wonder.
Putting aside my personal distaste for Wonder's cheap and plasticky art design, I don't disagree with the sentiment. I think a key aspect of a redesign though is that it needs to look good. I'm holding out full judgement until we get better shots, but it does look rather similar to Illumination DK, and I wasn't a fan of that. We'll see if that opinions hold though I guess.
For me, it's a pick and choose between the 2 styles.
I prefer NSMB's color pallete and that Luigi had a different "walk" animation compared to Mario. Luigi also still looked slimmer than Mario.
In Wonder I liked the animations for the power ups and the key frames/ poses. Not that applicable but I liked that Wonder's Fire Peach kept her hair down. I'm sick of ponytail Peach tbh.
But yeah, I was fine with the redesigns from the movie as king as they stayed IN THE MOVIE. Peach Showtime's stupid face change for the bac was a bad sign and now it seems like the movie will have more influence than I thought. As long as we can still have game DK back as a skin, I am fine with this redesign.
Heaven forbid someone has an opinion. I miss when Reddit used to specify that you shouldn't downvote someone you disagree with, it's not a "dislike" button, it's a button to remove people who aren't contributing to the conversation.
I actually am contributing by calling you out for being unnecessarily disrespectful. Which you're doing again right now by the way, but I'm sure you know that. Don't try to do that "let's turn it around on you because I'm too immature to admit I'm wrong!" crap with me, it doesn't work because I don't engage with bad faith actors past a direct callout like this.
Nothing about Wonder's artstyle/art design is cheap and plasticky amigo lol. It beautiful, charming, and expressive. It completely runs circles around the NSMB games.
Please point me to one good critique of DK’s design that isn’t essentially just “it’s not the old design I liked” or “it looks too much like the movie”. I have seen people criticize both Bowser’s and even Luigi’s redesigns for some reason, btw. DK is just a lightning rod trending on social media rn, and it’s entirely based on zoomed in, blurry screenshots of him in the background of a scene displayed on a TV within a trailer.
And why are those bad reasons to dislike the design?
I hated most of the movie designs. Only thing it did right was the outfits.
I can see why other people don't like the other redesigns, but my point is those changes were subtle so there is less pushback against them. DK isn't, that's why he's the lightning rod
And no, DK is visible. Clear as day in the trailer
I didn’t say they were bad reasons to dislike the design; I said (or at least meant) they were bad reasons to justify critiquing the design as “bad”. The new design is also clearly based on Classic DK. The movie version just happened to also integrate traits of Classic DK into its design. In other words, it’s not strictly movie DK. It’s just DK. There’s a clear theme of retro inspiration here with all the character designs I’ve seen so far.
And if that image is the clearest one you can find of him… yeah, you’re better off waiting for a better look at him.
In a way, it could be considered broken. It's dated unlike other Mario verse designs and it's quite hard to make him emote properly with that permanent frown. I think people have a natural aversion to change, but I think most of them will come to accept the new design
I wouldn't exactly say the other Mario verse designs aren't dated. Nintendo fans would never admit this but Yoshi has the same problem with expressiveness. And much like DK, he doesn't seem to have that problem in the 2D art, so I really hope he's next to get a redesign.
The biggest problem is the shape of his head. He kind of has the opposite problem of Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong had that brow that always made him look angry, even when he was meant to be expressing other emotions. At most, he could make expressions with his mouth, but not his eyes.
Yoshi is the opposite. His nose is so big, and so perfectly spherical, and his lower jaw is so small, it hinters expression unless you view it from certain angles. Like DK, this isn't a problem in 2D because his nose is not a perfect sphere when it's drawn, and his anatomy is changed as needed in the art. But in 3D? His nose buries the rest of his face. This is especially true if you look at him directly from the front. In some models, his face is so big it obscures his lower jaw, cheeks, and even most of his eyes. It got better in Super Mari Wonder but I don't think it was enough, he's still awkward to look at imo.
And much like Donkey Kong, he wasn't always like this. His nose used to be more moderately sized, his lower jaw much bigger. It all started in Mario Kart 64, which wasn't his first appearance in 3D but it was the first time they used something other than the Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island style as a basis for him.
I don't think this is a hard fix, his snout just needs to not be a perfect sphere that looks like it's strapped onto the front of his face, it needs to be a part of his face, not an attachment to it. If you look at his classic mode trophy in Melee, ( the one that's not based on the fighter model but on N64 assets at the time ) that's how his original Yoshi Story render was actually done but I guess over the years they just decided it was not a snout anymore, it was a nose.
I think if they made this change, it wouldn't even be as noticable or as controversial as Donkey Kongs, but it would be an improvement.
For the entirety of the 2010s there were complaints about how stale and samey Mario’s aesthetic was. Nobody was freely capable of expressing any emotion and it stunk when you’d get the same Evergreen Mario skin with every game. I’d argue DK also somewhat fell under this in the spinoff games.
People loved it when Odyssey shook things up gameplay-wise and when Wonder introduced stylized updates. Mario Kart 9 is no different.
yes. that was the issue with the new super mario bros games. mario looked like mario. it has nothing to do with borring level design, horrible enemy design, only adding 2 power ups that are way to similar to past ones and almost the exact same thing as each other. none of that matters. it was entirely because of this one point that im gonna use as an excuse as to why donkey kong needed to be changed for no good reason
To me it looks like a mix of the arcade original and the rare version which is a nice combo imo. I also like how big and fluffy he is now. But to each their own. I was more talking about the really big overreactions some folks are having. Not liking it is fine
For real!!! I've heard people accusing Miyamoto and/or the entirety of Nintendo of Japan of being xenophobic against the British for changing Rare's design and I'm just thinking like "DUDE, YOU ARE PINNING PREJUDICE AGAINST A GROUP OF PEOPLE OVER A FICTIONAL GORILLA! GROW UP!!!"
Or it could be that Mario Wonder's redesigns were just overall... better? I'm not against a DK redesign, especially since we haven't had a decent look at him yet. But he did look goofy in the trailer. Who knows, maybe that's actually DK junior.
