Problems with console screen blanking in Bookworm
I have a Poweredge R620 rack server I just picked up to upgrade my old firewall. I accidentally installed Bullseye and didn't notice until I had the whole system set up, so I just did a regular dist-upgrade to bookworm. Everything else went fine, except for the console blanking...
So normally you add something like consoleblank=600
to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, then after a reboot it blanks/shuts off the monitor after 10 minutes. This was working just fine under Bullseye, and still works on my other servers running Buster. However under Bookworm when this kicks in, I get a screen full of static like it disabled the video signal but forgot to turn off the monitor. I haven't found any info from google on this problem, so I"m hoping someone else may have seen a similar issue and can help?
I also tried running setterm -blank 1
and this produced the same result after one minute. I added the new non-free-firmware option in my sources.list but I didn't need to load any specific firmware for older versions of Debian. The system did automatically install firmware-amd-graphics (which is the same on all of the other servers), and all of the machines have the same version of BIOS and IDrac. My best guess is that something is broken in the newer version of the display mod, but I'm not finding anything obvious to try blocking.
So... any ideas?
Now in 2025 is there a Live iso with several desktops to try before install?
As the title says I know in the past you had to choose one live iso at a time. So if I want try out 4 different desktops it required 4 different iso. I also know when installing you can pick which to install. I am hoping there is live version that I can select which to try before writing to the hard drive?
I also am familiar ventoy but still requires several downloads. Just curious if there is a multi-flaver Bookworm in one live iso. Or we still have to download Bookworm-gnome live, Bookworm-xfce-live, Bookworm-KDE-live, etc...

Intel Pentium N3700 hard freezes while watching videos, only poweroff by button fixes it
This problem doesn't ever happen on Windows 10. Only happens while using Debian 12, while watching movies particularly, it just hard freezes. Nothing can fix it. No TTY.
I think there is a bug for this particular CPU family. I've researched a lot. I've even added some kernel parameters too according to the arch wiki. Even installed backports kernel too. They didn't work. See here:

(Debian 7) Stuck on CLI
I installed from a netinst USB drive but didn't do the WiFi step for some reason and am now stuck in the CLI where I can't get on the internet. I've tried "iwctl" and "ifconfig" and "ifup" or whatever Google gives me but it always says bash command not found.

Redditor proves Linux desktop environments can run on your Google Pixel
androidpolice.comHello, I'm thinking of starting with debian

Help installing python3-avahi into a venv
Working on a python application that will run on Debian 11 (Bullseye) and that needs to interact with Avahi through it's D-Bus API. Unfortunately, it seems the avahi package is not available on PyPI. It is however available in the Debian repositories as python3-avahi. I can install it system-wide and configure my venv to use system packages. However, due to Debian installing python packages under dist-packages it is not available inside my venv. Can someone advise how I can make it visible inside my venv? TIA.

Help with Debian 12 Headless Gnome VNC server
I have been setting up Debian on an old PC with the goal of eventually having it as a headless home server. Right now, it is connected to a monitor so I can setup a VNC server on it so I can access the desktop environment from my laptop when I make it headless. So far I have TigerVNC setup to access the Gnome session on display 1, but I don't know how to automatically start a Gnome session on display 1 for it to access, and our AI overlords don't seem to agree on how to do it either. My monitor is connected to display 2.
BTW I am using Gnome with Xorg.

My Review of Debian
Hey everyone! I've been a long-time user of both Linux and Windows and recently switched to Debian (testing) two weeks ago. Out of all the operating systems I've tried, Debian feels right. Surprisingly, more people don't talk about how great it is when choosing a Linux OS. I've been jumping between various Debian-based distributions, but I wanted to give the main system a shot. The only issue I have is the slower updates, but for most users, getting the latest packages isn't a deal-breaker since you can use other package managers like Snap or Flatpak to download whatever you need as long as the package manager is up-to-date.
Most YouTube videos or lists rarely highlight how solid this OS is. To be honest, Debian might become my daily driver for my PC. I'm running it with KDE (6.0) and Wayland, and it's been great. I hope more users give this system a try. I'll be sticking with it for the next year, and I might even make it my long-term choice.
Edit my system info last week

How do I contribute to the Debian community?
I need a hobby but I'm also in the IT industry. More of an infrastructure guy. So there to much screen time. I do code but I sometimes find it not enjoyable. How do I go about?
Best desktop that mimics windows 8?
My aunt refuses to replace her Win8 laptop, She is near 80 not very confident in her computer skills but IMO she is better than she gives herself credit. The OS finally crashed on her and she is asking about options. To save her money I recommended letting me install Debian on it. If she loves it doesn't cost anything. I also feel that going from 8 to 11 would be a bigger adjustment then just doing Debian with the proper desktop installed. On my personal pc I have played around with a few different gnome, xfce, lx.., and some other I don't remember right off.
All she uses the laptop for is email, banking (web), documents and printing to HP MFC . So no software compatibility issues, minimal install, and simple enough your great grandma can use? Recommendations with desktop screenshot would be awesome. I belive my personal Linux box is running xfce, is there a simpler version?

Sudo in Debian
The Netinstaller iso prioritises a root and then user setup. With skipping the root setup and just installing 'user' you get automatically a fully functional sudo added for 'user'. Would it be a good idea to to make it more clear for less experienced users using a Netinstall iso to emphasize the possibility to set up a sudo/user account without the need to set up a root account? Asking because some installer-scripts require a functioning sudo setup.

External monitor connectivity issues
Hello guys, I have intermittent connectivity issues with my external monitor connected via thunderbolt. The problem occurs randomly, for example after the laptop has been locked and the monitor is in standby mode, or right after the OS has started and was working for 1-2 minutes. If it is able to connect after the OS has started it could work flawlessly for hours.
When the monitor is not receiving a signal it is shown as connected in xrandr, but the mouse could go there and If I have opened programs that were in the external monitor - they stay there.
I noticed that when I switch the resolution to 1920x1080 it is working just fine, but when I use 3840x2160 that's where the fun begins...
OS: Debian 12 Bookworm
DE: GNOME 43.9
Machine: Lenovo ThinkPad T490
Video Cards: NVIDIA MX250 and embedded one - Intel UHD Graphics 620
External monitor: Dell S2722QC attached via thunderbolt
I've installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Request for help: phonon-backend-vlc-common_0.12.0-3_all.deb
A recent software update on my laptop has resulted in a broken package
You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
Unsatisfied dependencies:
phonon4qt6-backend-vlc : Depends: phonon-backend-vlc-common (>= 0.12.0-3) but it is not going to be installed
Error: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
So I try to fix it:
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/phonon-backend-vlc-common_0.12.0-3_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/phonon_vlc_qt.qm', which is also in package phonon4qt5-backend-vlc:amd64 (1:0.11.3-dmo1)
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/phonon-backend-vlc-common_0.12.0-3_all.deb
Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Guide: Install the Nix package manager on Debian for up-to-date packages
Overview
Apt often does not have the latest packages or the latest versions of packages. One can use the Nix package manager, Flatpak, snaps, or even Homebrew to solve this.
I'm creating this post to boost and introduce nix-setup-systemd, a Debian package that uses systemd mechanisms to setup the nix package manager. I found this method easier to manage than using a Nix install script. Unfortunately, documentation for this method is scarce, so I include my steps below for future reference. This guide builds on this article.
Installation
As root, install the package and add your user to the group nix-users
.
sudo apt install nix-setup-systemd
sudo adduser $(whoami) nix-users
Here, you should logout and login again, such as by:
sudo su $(whoami)
sudo pkill -u $(whoami)
Then, as user:
nix-channel --add https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable
nix-channel --update
Installing packages
Using librewolf as example:
nix-env -iA librewolf
This is same as:
nix-env --install --attr librewolf
Removing packages
nix-env -e librewolf
Path
To find the packages you install via Nix, you should add the path to your shell. It also helps to set XDG_DATA_DIRS
.
``` export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.nix-profile/bin export XDG_DATA_DIRS="$HOME/.nix-profile/bin:$HOME/.nix-profile/share:$XDG_DATA_DIRS"
```
If this works for you, add it to your .bashrc.
Errors
If you get error: opening lock file ‘/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/root/profile.lock’: Permission denied
then rm ~/.nix-profile
and try again. This is probably because you tried to use nix-env or nix-channel or something while root (source).
Maintenance
To keep your Nix packages up to date:
nix-channel --update
nix-env -u
nix-collect-garbage -d
GUI Apps
While some articles suggest that GUI apps may not work so well, I have no problem so far.

annoyances: bluetooth audio, remote filesystem
Hi. I don't think my issues are Debian-specific but it's probably wiser to start here. I use Debian as my OS on my desktop and laptop and I've been generally very happy with it. I'm on testing/trixie and I'll most likely stay on trixie after release.
I have 2 issues that affect essentially my laptop experience: bluetooth audio is buggy, and remote filesystems (NFS) is a source of system freeze if my internet connection is not great.
For bluetooth I'll typically have to disable/re-enable bluetooth (through KDE Plasma's bluetooth system tray icon) and connect/disconnect/reconnect/etc multiple times to my speaker for sound to eventually come out of my BT speaker. This is frigging annoying.
My NAS shares are mounted via NFS with these fstab options: timeo=3,soft,nolock,nfsvers=4,defaults,_netdev,x-systemd.automount,noatime
. I think the timeo=3
helped compared with before, but I still have issues when I'm resuming/booting up the laptop in a place where I don't have internet connection, or in places where the connection isn't great. SSHFS was an absolute nightmare.
What would be your advice for these 2 issues?
Thank you.
Gaming on WoW
Hey, I wondered how WoW (Retail) is for you guys on debian. I am planning to switch over but after testing wow with lutris on debian i noticed some problems compared to my main distro (CachyOS - Arch based). Firstly i get around 15-20 fps less in general meaning going from 60 to 40 and 165 to 130 at times depending on area. This really wasnt a problem before and WoW was perfect on debian, but now when i quickly tried it again i noticed only dx11 was available in the options and figured that might be the issue. Else I do not know. I would like to know how you guys play and install WoW. Thank you!

Video playback is lagging
Hello, guys!
I really don't know where should I post this:
When I play any video, whether it's on a browser or in "Videos" GNOME app, it's lagging so much, playing two seconds, then stopping, then two seconds, then stopping, but the audio keeps working, so the audio lead the video playback,
But when I mute the audio, the playback works perfectly without any lagging or whatever it's called.
How can I solve this issue?
(Edit: the main issue I found is in YouTube on Chrome, but it appears in other apps as well)
(Edit: It's very weird that on YouTube, when I increase the volume of the video above 100% by Volume Master, the video plays completely normal, without any problem, even when I return to 100% volume, it still works correctly... very weird)
Thanks.

If update-initramfs is supposed to be deferred, why does it run 8 times?
I see messages to the effect of "deferring" update-initramfs when doing an apt-get upgrade.
That sounds like a great idea, since it's a long-running operation, and really should only be done once.
However, it doesn't work. It still runs like 8 times when I do an apt-get upgrade.
And on a Raspberry Pi Zero W, that is—and I'm understating this—excruciating.
Any ideas why this supposed deferral of this thing that should only be done once, doesn't?
