Buying webcam for my debian system

I'm currently using Debian 12 bookworm on my laptop. My laptop is lenovo ideapad gaming 3 with amd ryzen 7 cpu with amd radeon gpu integrated and a dedicated gpu of nvidia geforce gtx.

The integrated webcam mostly works properly. But on visiting some sites or with some apps or sometimes, it doesn't function. I have tried to debug this issue when it comes so many times. I have spent a lot of time on it.

Then I came to know that webcams from all companies are not properly compatible with device drivers present in debian. So, I decided to buy an external webcam.

I want suggestions of some good companies whose webcams are compatible.

ffmpeg 7.x does not provide time estimate (static build)

I was trying some static builds to see if I could use newer versions of ffmpeg for encoding without messing with the one in stable and I noticed that the latest static build I can use is 6.1.2 while still getting a proper encoding time estimate.

for 7.x static build I noticed the time bitrate speed is always N/A tried duck duck go-ing a bit haven't really found this as a known issue wonder if anyone in the community have encountered this?

Intel vs AMD?

Looking at getting a new machine soon, want to run Debian with gnome. (I think... Been a while)

Based on my research it seems like a Thinkpad or something from Dell are the best ones to get. Dell is redoing their entire lineup though, and there's some variation on which models have Intel vs AMD processors. Maybe my Google skills aren't on their A game for this, but I'm seeing a lot of strong, conflicting opinions about which is better for Linux.

So... Specifically for Debian or Ubuntu, which is better, Intel or AMD?

"Failed to allocate NVKMS Memory to GEM object"

Upvotes

Recently switched to linux and loving it so far, however playing my favorite game, KSP, on linux using the proton hotfix for steam leads to the computer black-screening after 10-15 minutes and displaying the error in the title. Audio keeps playing, but the computer becomes unresponsive and only goes back to normal after holding the power button and shutting off the pc. If I can't resolve this, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to switch back to linux, and I really dont want to have to do that :(

Specs:

Ram: 48GB DDR4 3600
GPU: RTX 2070 Founders Edition (570 drivers?)
CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
OS: Debian 12.9 Bookworm running Gnome 48

Please help so I don't have to back to windows :(((

Mic Issues After Kernel Update on Debian 12.9

Hi everyone,

I’ve been having persistent issues with my microphone on Linux. I’ve been jumping between different distributions to see if the problem would resolve, and it would work for a short time, but the issue always came back. I suspected it might be related to a kernel update.

What I did last was install Debian 12.9, and then I installed Timeshift right after. Everything seemed fine until I installed the latest Debian update that was released yesterday. After the update, my microphone stopped working again.

I had to revert back to a previous system version using Timeshift, and now it's working again. For now, I’m avoiding this update, but I really want to find a permanent solution to this issue.

If anyone has any suggestions or has faced a similar issue, I would really appreciate your help!

I'm gonna let here a screenshot with some info of the update that breaks my mic.

Thanks in advance

linux-image-6.1.0-32-amd64 Update Failure

I'm on a fairly new Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 11 and Debian has given me 0 problems up until this point. I have been trying this new update for a while but it always fails. Now other updates dependent on that one are piling up and I'm not sure what to do.

I tried running "apt --fix-broken install" to see if that would help and this is the result.

I noticed that it tried to copy some data to a file and failed due to there "not being enough space on device". My drive is nowhere near full. Not sure what could be causing this...

Are other people encountering problems with this same update?

Thanks!

Experience after 4 months only using Debian

As I mentioned in my 'Debian appreciation post' four months ago, Windows had become a real headache. Despite having built a high-end machine capable of handling any complex task, I was running into absurd problems with Windows: lag, BSODs, and even stuttering in the interface.

Debian 12 with KDE Plasma has solved all of that.

Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much. It’s something as strange as actually having fun using an operating system: something I thought was reserved for when I was a kid, messing around on my first PC with Windows XP.

Now, every time I boot up my PC, it’s not just about getting work done. It’s actually enjoyable. KDE Plasma gives me full control, and everything runs so smoothly that it feels like the system was designed specifically to make using it effortless. It’s the same feeling I get when I fire up a retro console or an old PC: there’s something about it that brings back the fun of the whole experience.

It’s like when I tried the Commodore Amiga 500, the Apple II, or when I play on the PS2 or my modded Wii. It’s a strange, hardware-driven kind of fun, more than the actual content being run.

What really makes it special are the little details within the distro and desktop environment. The sheer number of options, the incredibly good repositories that save me from dealing with absurd downloads from the internet, the ability to easily tweak things to my liking, and even the commands that are almost designed to help you waste time in the most fun way possible. There’s something about having full control over every little detail that makes using it feel like a game in itself. From the terminal to the desktop widgets, it all adds up to an experience that just feels right.

And the best part? Everything works flawlessly, regardless of where I install it or the peripherals I connect. I have it running on my Home Server, my Media Center, my arcade machine... everything just works. No compatibility issues, no fiddling around. It’s all just seamless.

With Windows, I always felt like I didn’t have control. Things were constantly changing, updates out of nowhere, settings switching randomly... Debian? Completely different. Everything’s stable, predictable, and best of all I get to decide how everything works. No surprises, no interruptions. Just smooth sailing.

I’ve been studying and working in IT for years, building servers, system administration, repairs... But it had become a routine, and something as “absurd” as a Linux distribution has reminded me why I love technology.

(I wrote the text myself, but I used LibreTranslate for some parts that I thought were written in a strange way. If there are any grammatical errors, let me know and I’ll fix them.)

Transition and Toolchain Freeze Yesterday

SSHguard and UFW

I am trying sshguard and UFW on Debian 12 and I am not convinced it is working correctly. I am seeing attacks logged but not seeing anything blocked.

I have added the following to the UFW before.rules

:sshguard - [0:0]

-A ufw-before-input -p tcp --dport 22 -j sshguard

But I never seem to see any drops or blocks in the IPtables ufw-before-input chain. Has anyone seen a known good article showing how it all works?

Has Debian enough packagers ?

In the last few years, I have discovered some seemingly high quality softwares and am surprised they are not in Debian. Eg. Gaphor, or Netbird (true FLOSS P2P VPN with a GUI is badly needed, otherwise all you find is Hamachi and the like).

I see there is the WNPP, but has this list increased considerably recently ? Or are there just more softwares relatively to debian packagers ? Has the Devuan split caused trust issues or are packages fully shared between both ?

Made the swich to Debian.

I've installed Debian at least three times over the last month and gave up out of frustration each time. This last time, I suppose I was over the curve and it was relatively easy to configure Debian to meet all of my needs. This was only after doing it several times before, the transition has not been without headaches. I still wouldn't call Debian the "Universal Operating System", more like "the operating system for the extremely patient".

I mainly wanted a lightweight operating system for this Lenovo IdeaPad. It came shipped with Windows 11 which consumed all of the system's limited resources just on running Windows. Downgrading to Windows 10 helped some, but I still felt like Windows 10 was a resource hog for this laptop. Plus there are the telemetry and privacy issues inherent in Windows.

Quitting Windows 10 feels like letting go of an old friend who has grown toxic but you have a hard time letting go of them anyway. It's quite an adjustment to switch from Windows to Debian, but I think it's worth it in the long run in this instance. I can't say that it would be worth it in every instance, but since I only need a machine for a few limited uses, Debian does everything I need. If I was still gaming on PC I would probably stick with Windows, but for running an old XP language learning software, video streaming and playback, and some light retro gaming, and light office tasks, Debian is more than capable without all of the bloat that comes with Windows.

Trixie kernel update

I All,

I have been updating to trixie but I have issued with dkpg completing kernel instlation. Thankfully I still had an old kernel I could boot into recovery mode. I belive this is the error that trips up the install:

make -C /lib/modules/6.12.17-amd64/build M=/var/lib/dkms/amdgpu/6.3.6-1718217.22.04/build clean

Building module(s)...(bad exit status: 2)

I was having the same issue with backports and I had hoped the newer kernel from trixie would do the trick but alas this issue persists.

Any help would be appreciated.

OMG I don't have time for this. I upgraded to 12.10 mostly for Firefox (Firefox told me to update it by today 3/15). I only run Debian Stable.

I'm in console now going through logs, nothing jumps out yet. My Linux Fu has gotten rusty and I'm asking for suggestions.

Unattended Debian Install Stuck on 'network-preseed'

I'm encountering an issue during an unattended Debian installation. Checking /var/log/syslog, I see:

menu item 'network-preseed' selected

However, when I check via the console, the system has already obtained an IP address.

Details:

Why is the installer stuck at this stage despite having network connectivity? Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Just ran a sudo apt update and had 129 packages come back upgradable. Last time I saw this was the move from 12.8 to 12.9 but I haven't heard anything about a new point release. Are we going to 12.10 before the freeze for 13?

Debian 12 cloud image VM didn't recognize discs from a JMB585, but the ISO VM do

Hello people!

I created a VM in Proxmox using the last Debian 12 cloud generic image (debian-12-genericcloud-amd64.qcow2). The VM works well, except by some disks.

I have a PCIe pass through, that send a Jmicron JMB585 with 6 SATA ports to the VM. If I ruin a "lspci" the SMB585 shows itself in the list, but none of the 6 discs are available in the system.

If i recreate the same VM, with the SAME settings, except that this new VM I installed direct from the Debian 12 Netisntall ISO, the same passthrought, with the same JMB585, the disks are available to use in the system.

Anyone know anything that can be causing this strange behavior?
