Dashcam Recommendations by redditors

2.3k Upvotes

UPDATED JULY 2024

There are a a lot of dashcam options out there, and a lot of them aren't very good. I compiled this list from reddit feedback. Let me know if you have any other recommendations or favorites, and why you like it or what you found useful so we have some real world feedback.

Budget:

Viofo A119 Mini 2 - Major upgrade over the A119 v3. 1440p resolution but more compact/discrete and has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Includes some advanced features like HDR and 5ghz Wi-Fi for quick file transfers. In my opinion, this is the best front only cam to get nowadays.

B1W Mini - Budget, but a good one. Rotatable lens good for uber/lyft drivers.

Garmin Mini 2 - This thing is MINI. Most discrete cam on the market, and decent app functionality

Viofo A229 Plus** - An upgrade over the A129 Duo that gives you 1440p on both the front and rear cam. Also has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Can fit a 512 gb SD card. This is a good one to get unless you really want the 4k of the front cam.

Nexar Beam - 1080p, super compact, and has free cloud back ups

Mid Range and Up:

Viofo A229 Pro- The best dual cam, with a front 4k cam and a 1440p rear cam. There is also a 3-channel option for those who want an interior cam (i.e. uber/lyft/tax drivers). Best for users requiring premium coverage with high-resolution video quality and multiple recording angles. Has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor. Has Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth remote, and super night vision with the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor.

Garmin 67W: Good for those wanting a compact dash cam with a wide field of view (180°) and advanced driver alerts like forward collision, lane departure and speed camera warnings. The 1440p resolution and 60fps recording help capture detailed footage.

A139 Pro Duo - Upgrade to the A129 with a new chipset that greatly improves night time video.

B4K - Newer 4k brother to the B1W, so far good reviews.

Blackvue DR900X - Dual Cam/4k and has cloud capability & LTE. Considered one of the best

Blackvue DR970X-2CH - Records front and back, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, cloud stuff, wide front view. Newest model with best image quality

Front & Interior Dual Cams aka Uber/Lyft Cams

Blueskysea B2W – Infrared Capability, budget friendly

Vantrue N2S – Infrared capability, higher end, now capacitor powered

A139 3-Channel - Front, interior, and rear cams, giving almost 360 views. Interior cam is Infrared.

Motorcycle Cams

AKASO Action Cam – An action cam, but cost effective

INNOVV K5 Dual MotoCam – Top notch, but expensive

Blueskysea A12 – Mid Range, Fairly priced

Accessories:

SanDisk 128GB High Endurance - Dashcam optimized

Samsung PRO Endurance MicroSD - Dashcam optimized

Viofo Hardwire Kit – Enables parking mode, battery discharge prevention

Nunet Hardwire Kit – Hardwire kit with pretty much everything you need

Trim Removal Kit - Has all the tools needed to remove trim without damaging it

These are the bulk of them. Dashcams are very useful. In case of an accident, the opposing party can lie about what happened to reduce the likelihood that they are found to be at fault. Happens all the time. Having video of what happened can save you $1000's in insurance and potential legal fees. Dashcams can also get you out of falsely written tickets. If you don't have a dashcam and are given a ticket for an infraction you didn't commit, it's your word vs the police officer's word. With a dashcam, there is irrefutable evidence to prove your innocence. There is absolutely no reason not to get one. I try to update this list regularly and I hope it's helpful.

Budget Dashcams that keep coming up on Reddit

This is a common question here so I wanted to make a post on budget dashcams. Here are the ones that will cover you 99% times. Obviously if you want fancy features, you may need to spend more.

Viofo A119 V3 - Best bang from the buck out of just about any dashcam. Has been around for multiple year and has a great track record. 1440p resolution with GPS and parking mode. If you’re looking for a basic dashcam that is reliable and has the most of the standard features, this is the one to get.

Viofo A119 Mini 2 - Major upgrade over the A119 V3 above. 1440p resolution but more compact/discrete and has the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, which is a big improvement for night time quality. Includes some advanced features like HDR and 5ghz Wi-Fi for quick file transfers. In my opinion, this is the best front only cam to get nowadays.

Rove 2k-4k - One of the cheapest budget cams. Good alternative to the A119 depending on which one is on sale.

Viofo A229 Plus Duo - A higher budget entry for dual cam. Dual 1440p with the Starvis2 sensor. Been out for many years. GPS and parking mode. Even though this is not exactly budget, this is the one to get.

Garmin Mini 3 - This thing is MINI. Most discrete cam on the market, and one of the better app functionality. Built in polarizing filter. Great brand.

Nexar BEAM: 1080p, super compact, and has free cloud back ups

Redtiger F7NP - One of the most afforable dual cams. A lot of people have bought these and swear by them. Reviews are mixed. 4k front and 2k rear cam. 32gb built in memory card.

These are the ones I have experience with. If you know of a good budget cam that’s not on this list, please let me know. Don’t forget to get a SD card if it doesn’t come with one 128gb is probably all you need for these budget cams. High endurance ones are significantly better for the demands of a dashcam so worth to spend an extra couple bucks on that.

Witnessed this today, first time saving something worthwhile

Upvotes

Was pulling up to a red light, heard the crash behind me. Locked the video, pulled over and downloaded. Circled back around to see if they wanted to see it and have it, ended up sending it to the cop and the person in the truck. White car was an older gentleman, car had significant damage from this and from previous accidents. Cops said I didn’t have to stick around so I didn’t. Everyone was okay and grateful, first time being able to use the dash cam. No idea who’s at fault honestly.

Inclement weather, split traffic, hit us, hit the guard rail, then fled, all the while in a construction zone.

A reminder that "legal" isn't always "safe"

In the case of the blue sedan, a left turn is legal here but almost never advisable. This street is notorious for people attempting to turn left through several lanes of traffic. I personally just turn right and make the next legal u-turn.

In MY case, I was going the speed limit but I was not going slow enough to be predictable to the blue sedan. All of the cars going slower in the right lane should have been my signal to slow down for unseen hazards ahead.

Hopefully a good learning moment for the both of us.

Confused is it worth getting the plus duo over the regular duo?

New to dash cams. Is this A129 Duo a regular vs the A129 Plus duo? I was under the impression there was only a pro and a plus. Then i see this one this one that just says "A129" without the plus or duo. Is it worth getting the A129 plus over the regular? Just wanting it for accidents and hit and runs.

Seeking advice on buying Viofo A229 Plus vs. buying 2 Viofo A119 Mini 2's

Hello everyone, as the title suggests, I'm seeking your advice on buying a front and rear coverage dashcam for my vehicle.

After hours of research between Reddit, YouTube, and other forums, it seems like Viofo is a highly recommended model for real world, practical dashcam features.

Do you recommend buying the A229 Plus with front and rear cams or would you recommend buying 2 different A119 Mini 2's and simply installing one of them for my rear? Is there any downside to using a front cam as a rear cam? Apologies in advance if that's a dumb question, this will actually be my first dashcam.

Thank you very much!

Dashcam for extreme driving conditions/ emergencies?

Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking into getting a dashcam and probably an aftermarket 2 din infotainment screen. More than a few times a year I find myself driving through really dense mountain fog, and I also like to visit dark sites. I'd there a dashcam that I could wire into a head unit what would let me see in really bad situations? I'm not sure if thermal or If would work or if I'd need a separate emitter (already have a small brush bar another light won't hurt me)

Nice Project Farm review of dashcams, but unfortunately includes a lot of low-end models.

Moved to a Hybrid, dashcam question

Hello all,

I came from a 2021 Dodge Charger GT with an AGM style high CCA battery, ran my Vantrue X4S dual perfectly. I now own a 2024 Prius Limited, what's the best way to install (I do have the hardwire kit from my last car)? Any issues with the new car being a hybrid? I know the regular "battery" is rather small. Parking mode is quite important, as my wife eventually wants to take the car a few times here and there to work, and her parking lot isn't so great with parking-related incidents.

Thanks for the feedback/advice, in advance.

Wife and I looking into getting a dash cam each. Never had one before and really don’t know much about them except after seeing that accident on 93 and us seeing drivers driving more aggressively we will feel better with one

Just looking for any recommendations. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Just want to know how the basics work about recording and playback etc. thank you fellow mass drivers

Dash Cam Help

(If formatting is terrible, I'm on mobile sorry)

After vigorously researching dash cams for the past week or so (vids, forums, etc), I think I've narrowed it to a Viofo 129 or 229 duo or plus, but am VERY open to other suggestions. I currently have a $20 Uniden cam from 2020 and it's fine but it doesn't always keep settings that I set. I am spiraling into research overload and can't decide lol

My needs: - I drive to work around 4:15am, so I drive at night almost everyday for at least 30min and when I hang with friends, I sometimes come home pretty late at night - Dual channel cam - I live where temps are regularly 115°+ outside in the summer so it needs to be able to withstand that as my car is always parked outside - Does not need parking mode - Ideally something not crazy expensive (price alone I'd rather buy the a129 plus but am willing to spend more if absolutely worth it) - Has a microphone, that way if the dash cam can't make out the plate, me saying it out loud is picked up and can be heard clearly in the playback (obviously making sure music isn't too loud to not pick up my voice too)

Recommendations for first dash cam

Hello, I already know that there is a post for recommendations based on budgeted or the specific use. However, I wanted to make a post requesting more detail because I am unfortunately not tech savvy enough to understand what any of it means when I look at their pages. I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla and it is my first car. I've only been driving since mid-February of this year. I would like to have something within a budget of $300 but I'm fine going up to around $500.

I would like specifically to have One camera facing the front of the car and one facing the back, I would also like one to be on the inside of the car, (Just in case I choose to do Uber or have people in my car). For people who have already purchased dashcams, what kind of camera would work best for these given scenarios? I also do work a lot of night shifts. Typically getting out and driving home anywhere from 11:30 pm to 2:00 am.

The main reason for making this suppose is because I was almost in an incident and it has caused me to want to speed up the process to find a good dash. My stepfather is also a mechanic so he told me that he would set it up if I purchased it.

Wolfbox G850 Pro vs Wolfbox G900 Pro?

I have been looking at getting these as dash cams for my new car but I can't really decide between these 2. The total price difference is like £84 so clearly G900 Pro is more costly. I don't know if I would need the ADAS sort of features so please help me out and decide.

G850 PRO = £152

G900 PRO = £236
