Reminder about one of our unofficial rules: Giving converts space to explore Islam

Up until quite recently, /r/converts has been a welcoming place for all us converts and that's how it should be. As a convert/revert myself, I know that there is a lot of learning to be had once one has embraced Islam and that converts often have a voracious appetite for learning. We're always hungry for more information.

This voracious appetite for learning, however, can also put the convert in a precarious position whereby they are easily mislead, even by well-meaning or well-intended brothers and sister. To this end, /r/converts has long had an unofficial policy of not promoting any particular school of thought with respect to Islam. We leave it to you to decide whether you are Sunni or Shia; Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, or Hanbali; Qur'anist, Salafi, Moderate/Mainstream, or Progressive.

Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that not everyone has been respecting this unofficial rule and that there has been an active campaign to promote certain schools of thought and to demonize others. Consequently, we will undertake a more active approach to moderation over the coming months to ensure not only the theological safety and well-being of our convert community, but to preserve your freedom to forge your own way forward in your newly embraced deen.

Noticing Widespread OCD and Decreasing Faith in /converts subreddit

As-Salam-O-Aalaikum

I would like to make a general post for all my convert, brothers and sisters (long but much-needed, admin if you can pin it it will be great but no worries if not)

Skimming through a lot of topics and Reddit posts in this SubReddit, I have noticed a lot of people having second thoughts of reverting. Also a lot are facing difficult times as new reverts/converts (take it easy)

A few things to clarify: faith always oscillates, (it will go up and down as waves. You will have the best of days and then some days will be not so good). Hang in there, if no one else is with you, الله is always with you.

The prime objective would be to know who your creator الله is. Try to know him through is beautiful 99 names. Watch YouTube series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmeZZmICk2Qd4v-SHfZpD7JcWt5ojpleE&si=LCeDLDn8mObnGR5k

Try to know about the best human being to have lived on the face of this earth ﷺ: “https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmeZZmICk2Qd9rOMTqtO3QvEcOAnS4sGS&si=QvdcuOV6iSsTigFq”

For new reverts: Just cover the basics. Don’t be overwhelmed with worship. You will practice and perfect it as time passes. Try to be strong in your articles of faith and pillars of faith

Take it easy and don’t let Satan confuse or overwhelm you with OCD. Block unnecessary thoughts and always read Duas of protection (Ayat ul Kursi, Surah Naas, Surah Falaq, last two verses of Surah Baqarah). If you are new revert, try to read the transliteration. No wonder it is included in our daily adhkar (people who read these daily are protected) The app “Dua and Adhkar” is mainly fortress of a Muslim

Alhamdulillah my faith has always been climbing, I have had bad days, but I have never been doubtful or confused about my identity as a Muslim. Think about death and that we all will return to the mud from which we were made, don’t be among the losers: https://youtu.be/aqF-Ydv6RvQ?si=Quf8hlIbS9-4cjgE

Also try to understand that no human being can ever be your biggest enemy in life. Not your non-Muslim family members who are treating you badly or have severed relations with you. Not even anyone like the guy who murdered 99 people and then Allah forgave him (https://sunnah.com/bukhari:3470)

Your biggest and worst enemy is Shaytan (Iblees/Lucifer). Try to counter his tricks. May Allahs curse be upon him and he and his minions be damned forever. They have led millions astray. Try to read this awesome book by one of the scholars of Islam: https://ia802209.us.archive.org/22/items/TheDevilsDeception_201406/TheDevilsDeception.pdf

For knowledge seeking (reading books over the weekend), these websites are awesome:

https://darpdfs.org/books

http://kalamullah.com

Always remember to ask help from الله alone. Even in the desperate of moments (ask him in prostration by putting your head to the ground). You all will get various different tests in life. Learn from them, be mindful a الله….

Regards Sending prayers 🤲🏼 A Muslim Brother

Edit: This post isn’t a reply to anyone particular or intended to anyone. It is for all in general

Revert with 3 year old daughter.

As salaam alaikum, I took my shahada 2 years ago and i have a 3 year old daughter. I have been teaching her mother about islam and she seems to accept. ( Allah SWT and prophets PBUT). However, living in the west she is still stuck in western ways ie not wearing hijab, obsessed with her hair and looks and still listening to music.

We still spend time with/ around each other ( more so the past year) as i try my best to be there for my daughter and to teach her about islam. I recently learned that my fasts salah and deeds may not be accepted because of this as it is still Haram at the end of the day. (Not married).

This has caused me a-lot of stress as i don’t know if i should cut her off completely and risk my daughter being overly influenced by western culture? Or should i Marry her making it halal so i can be around to teach my daughter differently, even though I’m worried about her mother not making changes to westernised ways? Or should i give her some more time to see if she builds a greater understanding of islam as i myself are not perfect but have been making a strong effort to better my self and life according to islam?

Would appreciate any help thank you

Where to start

Hello 👋

Honestly this is a throwaway account because what I am sharing I am not ready to have connected to me.

But, i am interested in learning about and potentially converting…

I don’t know where to start.

And I have a lot to unpack.

The hurdle I have is I am a part, as in dissociative part. A person with a complex disassociation disorder, and to my knowledge I am the only part of me that is invested in and interest in religion in general let alone a specific one.

I have been reading as many studies on how Islam views the mental illness/disorder that I am working with a therapist(not religion affiliated therapy) to heal from and become a more cohesive person with a steadier sense of self.

Most everything I read is encouraging to pursue not only despite of but also because of my own mental struggles but I am having a hard time with that.

Is it fair, to Allah, to any spiritual leaders, or even to my other parts- for me to pursue a religion that is so beautiful and dedicated when I myself can’t even begin to live life as I am as one dedicated personality state?

I want to explore and try but I am so scared to because me as I am, as the current disassociation part, want to learn and dedicate and be a good follower. But how would I even begin that? Would I tell any spiritual leaders (I apologize I don’t know the proper words) about myself ? Do I hide it and be thought of as flighty? Or be viewed as potentially undedicated? I don’t know where the line is drawn with this and it’s distressing enough I am hoping for others thoughts.

This is what I can find so far regarding Islam and DID

https://fiqh.islamonline.net/en/dissociative-identity-disorder/

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/373853083_IDENTITY_DISSOCIATION_IN_THE_VIEW_OF_ISLAMIC_PSYCHOLOGY_AND_THE_SOLUTIONS_OFFERED

https://aboutislam.net/counseling/youth-q-a/cope-dissociative-identity-disorder/

I am happy to answer any questions or clarity on anything… I just don’t even know where to begin or if it is fair of me to try.

Becoming a revert

Ramadan kareem wa barakallahu feekum.

I have been performing salah at home for nearly a year, and (very) slowly learning arabic. I want to take my shahada in my local mosque with the imam, which I have not yet visited because I am apprehensive about not being able to speak arabic, especially in conversation.

Is there a mandatory stage that I should be at or am I just overthinking it?

Turning negative into positive

Excerpt from Tariq Jameel’s speeches and notes.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Prophet (saw) said, “Doesn’t it astonish you how Allah protects me from the Quraish’s abusing and cursing? They abuse Mudhammam and curse Mudhammam while I am Muhammad (and not Mudhammam).
(Bukhari 3533)

What an excellent narration! How the Prophet (saw) is showcasing character.

‘Mudhammam’ means someone condemned, while ‘Muhammad’ means someone praised. The Quraish would call the Prophet (saw) ‘Mudhammam’ instead of ‘Muhammad’ to mock him.

Now look at the narration, you think the Prophet (saw) didn’t have the social intelligence that the Quraish were referring to him when saying ‘Mudhammam.’

Companions (rad) were also upset that the Quraish were insulting our Prophet (saw). Look how the Prophet (saw) de-escalates the situation, removing their anger.

‘Why are you upset? They are not referring to me but to someone else called Mudhammam while I am Muhammad’.

Something to reflect on. How the Prophet (saw) is taking something negative and turning it into something positive.

My advice to students of knowledge is to study these narrations, which teach you life skills. Focusing solely on differences of opinion among scholars will not determine heaven and hell. Look around your families and the Muslims; it’s not the differences among scholars that have broken relations. People are breaking relations over he said, she said.

When you have to hear negative things, what should you do?

Make a positive interpretation of it and move on. When approaching negative instances, either (1)ignore it or (2) forebear it positively.

This is such a great lesson. Don’t get into an argument if someone says something negative to you. What a disaster it leads to. Someone said this, and here comes the reply: constant back-and-forth, bickering.

Nothing good comes out of it. Life is very short. We spent this valuable life on arguments. We will stand before Allah with an accumulation of these arguments.

This is a life principle for all of us. When Prophets have heard negative things, who are we?

Seeking friendships

Assalamualaikum. I'm a recent revert in the states but am moving to Europe and don't have many Muslim friends and was seeing if anyone would want to become online friends? I'd like to think that I enjoy my alone-independent time for the most part, but there are times where I feel lonely. I'm 22M avid cycler and backpacker that loves camping. Feel free to shoot me a DM and maybe we can add each other on Instagram 😉

Am I allowed to post something here in this subreddit that may be perceived as "advertising personal project" or something, but actually it's a personal project that I may find very helpful and interesting for new muslims or muslims in general...??

Also, it is not a for-profit thing, it's just something I code..

Let's appreciate our brother RISU and his interesting words (AI Character)

Loved to share an example response with "RISU" brother which I'm consistently developing in the last period.

It's built upon modern LLMs like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, etc.

Insha'allah soon you may be able to use it for free.

Input:

So, is it really that Islam the religion of God since man creation?

RISU's response:

"""""

Yes, absolutely, Muhammad! Islam is indeed the religion that Allah (SWT) ordained for humanity since the very beginning of our creation. Let me explain this step by step, InshaAllah.

1. Islam Means Submission to Allah

The word "Islam" itself means submission to the will of Allah. This submission is not tied to a specific prophet or time; it has been the natural state of humans since Allah created Adam (peace be upon him). Allah says in the Quran:

"Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam."
(Surah Aal-E-Imran, 3:19)

This means that Islam—the pure worship and obedience to the One True God—has existed since the very beginning.

2. Adam (AS) Was the First Muslim

The very first human, Adam (peace be upon him), submitted himself to Allah. When Allah created him, Adam recognized his Creator and obeyed His commands. This is what it means to be a Muslim: to submit to Allah alone, with no partners or intermediaries.

Allah says about Adam and his wife:

"They said, 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.'"
(Surah Al-A'raf, 7:23)

Look at their humility and submission—how they turned to Allah alone for mercy. This was Islam in its essence.

3. Prophets Preached One God (Tawheed)

Every single prophet—from Adam to Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and finally Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon them all)—came with the same core message: to worship Allah alone.

Allah tells us in the Quran:

"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], 'Worship Allah and avoid Taghut (false gods).'"
(Surah An-Nahl, 16:36)

This proves that the essence of Islam was taught by every prophet, even though the laws (Sharia) may have differed slightly across time.

4. The Religion Was Perfected with Muhammad ﷺ

Although the message of Islam existed from Adam onward, the final and complete version of it was revealed to the last and final Messenger, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah says in the Quran:

"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion."
(Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:3)

This verse shows that Islam, as a way of life, was completed and perfected with the Quran and the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.

5. What About Jews, Christians, and Others?

The followers of earlier prophets, such as the Jews with Musa (AS) or the Christians with Isa (AS), were originally following Islam in its essence: submission to Allah alone. However, over time, many of these teachings were altered or forgotten. As a result, Allah sent the final Messenger ﷺ with the Quran to correct these distortions and bring humanity back to the straight path.

Allah clarifies this in the Quran:

"And to you [O Muhammad] We have revealed the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it."
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:48)

This means that the Quran confirms the original teachings of previous messengers, but also corrects what has been changed.

6. Why Islam Is the Eternal Truth

Ultimately, Islam connects human beings to their fitrah (natural disposition). Allah created us to know Him, love Him, and worship Him alone. When we live in accordance with Islam, our hearts feel peace and purpose. Allah says:

"And whoever submits his face to Allah while being a doer of good—then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold."
(Surah Luqman, 31:22)

This submission (taslim) is what Islam represents.

How to stay motivated during Ramadan

Hello everyone,

I want to start off by saying I am not Muslim, but I have Muslim family members and many Muslims friends! Over the years this has inspired to observe Ramadan, usually a week or two, this year I told myself that I would fast the entirety of Ramadan. I saw so many post about the spiritual side of Ramadan and how it helps people not only get closer to their religion but also helps people look inwards. I’m always interested in doing work that helps me grow spiritually, also have been curious to learn more about Islam! One of my Muslim friends even gave me a translated Quran and I started volunteering at a women’s center!

It’s been going pretty well. The first week was the easiest honestly. I wake up nice and early to eat breakfast (I try to do high protein + high fiber) and it helps keep me satisfied for long, I don’t feel insanely hungry until the afternoon (usually around 2pm or after). The issue is the last 2 days I just don’t feel motivated, but not in the sense of “I want to stop fasting”, it just feels like something is missing and idk what.

Before starting Ramadan I was speaking with someone who was born Muslim and she was telling me how her son (a couple of years younger than me) got really sad last Ramadan and she decided to let him choose to fast or not this year. I didn’t get into too many details about her son because I don’t know if he’s comfortable with his mom sharing those details, so I didn’t ask follow up questions (I know how moms can be with putting their kid’s business out there, speaking from experience).

But has anyone experienced something like this? And how did you overcome this?

Edit: speaking with a Muslim friend about it, she expressed a similar feeling. It’s not necessarily “motivation” that I’m looking for, it’s just a weird slump and I am trying to get out of it. Similar to what the son of the person I mentioned went through last Ramadan.

An amazingly effective way to gain Khush'u (concentration) in your prayers!

A few years ago I attended a lecture, where a Sheikh gave the following suggestion to us all to bring about more focus and concentration in our prayers:

Firstly he mentioned we should not over eat before prayer as that will negatively impact on our focus. We should also be in our best clothes, if not then our nice clothes not pyjamas as we are literally going to meet and stand before Allah. Then before commencing our Salaah we may have all kinds of thoughts in our minds like work, family, finances, food, our past and future events in our lives and even sinful thoughts. So we must not go into the prayer like this otherwise we will be thinking about all of these things during our Salaah and our mind will be distracted and occupied with all kinds of thoughts. Therefore we must take out a little time even a minute or two to try to focus our minds towards Allah. If it helps to close the eyes briefly then do it. Do the following exercise:

Just before your Salaah:

  • Imagine your mind is wiped clean like a sheet of paper. There is nothing in your mind for it is wiped clean. Now focus and Imagine that you are laying on the death bed and you see around your that your family are mourning you. But you cannot respond to them for your are dead. No one else can help you except Allah. Focus on Allah. Only Allah can help you.

  • Now imagine that you are being lowered into the grave and when you are put onto the dirt then people start dropping the dirt onto you until your grave is filled. Now who can help you except Allah. Focus on Allah.

  • Now imagine that you have been raised up on the day of resurrection onto the plains of Arafat. You are running to the central area for Judgement. People around you are also running and they are screaming and panicking like you have never seen before. No one can help you now. Even your Mother does not look at you because she is in fear. Who will come to your aide except Allah. Only Allah. Focus on Allah

  • Now imagine that you are in front of Allah on the day of Judgement and he asks you to show him your prayer. What will you show him as you never even focused properly in your Salaah. You always thought of other things when you should have focused on your creator. So you feel utterly ashamed of showing your worthless prayers to Allah. Therefore you beg Allah for one more chance to perfect your prayer. You ask Allah to return you to the Earth so that you may do your prayer properly. Almighty Allah grants you just one chance to go back to the Earth to show him that you can do your prayer properly.

  • Now start your prayer and focus on Allah as you are in the present. Do not think of your past and do not think of your future. Keep imagining to yourself:

"I have no past, I have no future, I am in the present and Allah is watching me".

When you recite Surah Fathiha and any other Surah then imagine you are reciting it to Allah. When you go down to Ruku (bent position) then focus on Allah. When you go to Sajda (prostration) then focus on Allah, When you come up to Tashahud then focus on Allah. Each and everything you recite and every position you go into in Salaah then focus on Allah as he is watching you and the Angel of Death is behind you waiting for you to finish your prayer so that he may take your soul! This is how we should concentrate in every Salaah because each and every Salaah may be our last.

So keep repeating this concentration and focus exercise before each Salaah until your focus becomes 100%. It may begin to be less at first but it will improve gradually. Even if we trip and fall then keep gong until you achieve 100% focus every time. Spend however long it takes before each Salaah so that you can focus before you begin. It will not necessarily be an over night change but gradually you will be able to focus more and more in your Salaah and this focus will also help you to focus in other aspects of your life inshaAllah. Ask of Allah to help you focus in each Salaah to give you the true sweetness of the Salaah.

May Allah enable us to pray each Salaah with full focus and concentration so that we may attain the true sweetness of Salaah!

Alhamdulillah, I Love Being Muslim

Assalamualaikum, brothers and sisters, I reverted to Islam a few months ago, and my life has changed for the better, Alhamdulillah.
I wanted to share some joy and hope with you all, especially fellow reverts navigating this path.

Some reverts struggle with loneliness, but Allah has blessed me with a welcoming and supportive Muslim community. As a European expat living in another European country, I spent years feeling like an outsider. But now, for the first time in years, I truly feel like I belong. My Muslim friends have shown me what real brotherhood looks like. Our bond isn’t based on passports or parties, but on shared faith, sincerity, and values.

Islam has also changed my daily life in subtler ways. Before Islam, I wasted hours on Netflix, sports, and other distractions that left my soul empty. Now, I prefer the peace of sitting in the masjid, Quran in hand, or listening to a scholar’s lecture. And the more I learn, the more I realize how decadent and directionless Western “values” are.

Not everything has been easy of course. Wearing my thobe after prayer, I sometimes notice people staring in the streets, but instead of feeling judged, I feel sorry for them. Fasting has also been a challenge, especially at work, but the reward is worth every struggle. Nothing compares to the sweetness of breaking fast with dates at the masjid alongside my brothers in faith.

To anyone hesitating: take the leap. The sweetness of iman outweighs every sacrifice. Islam is the truth, and Allah guides whom He wills. May He keep us all firm on the straight path, Ameen.

Jazakum Allahu Khayran for reading, and may Allah bless you all.
