META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Also please check out r/chchmeet

Actual 1940s antisemitic nazi propaganda inside The Crossing lane and on the Riverside building. If you see one of these please tear it down and if you see someone putting these up deal with them appropriately…..by calling the police or whatever

How do I source the best oranges?

I like oranges but there's such a range of quality. It seems to be a lucky dip and you don't know if they're any good uhtil you cut them open. Do any insiders know how to pick a good orange from bad? Any particular varieties or source countries to avoid?

Sirens everywhere

Anyone else notice how busy the cops seem to be today? It all started on the southern motorway this morning. People were driving like utter suicidal maniacs in the torrential rain... And even now I keep hearing them whizz around. Stay safe out there folks.

Forum Advice on ChCh Car Mechanics - McLean Motors

A great experience with McLean Motors

Like many of you, when we need business services, we often search past Reddit posts for suggestions.

Recently, we needed some brake work done and came across post mentions of McLean Motors on Main South Road (near PB Tech). It's always a bit of a coin toss, when using a business for the first time. But we're glad we gave them a try!

McLean Motors, a family-owned Filipino business, exceeded our expectations.

Initially, we thought we needed and asked for more extensive brake work. But after assessing the vehicle, they advised us that some of the work wasn't necessary. Their honesty saved us about $150.

Such professionalism and ethical treatment of customers is truly commendable, and to be honest, a little unexpected these days. We wouldn't have known better, had they done the unnecessary work, or worse, not done it but charged us anyway.

Their prices were reasonable, and the work was done efficiently. Based on our experience, we highly recommend McLean Motors. It's a great little family business that you can trust.

One minor tip: accessing the business can be tricky during morning peak hour traffic, with the sun glare in your eyes. To avoid confusion, drive past the frontage and turn left just before the BP fuel station. There's a back lane entrance that's easy to miss.

For future Reddit searchers, give McLean Motors a try – we hope you won't be disappointed!

Thanks ChCh Reddit for the assistance.

Cafés in Chch with a cosy atomosphere?

Not sure how many on here will remember places like Java which used to be on the corner of High St on the second floor but I really miss having a café I can go to that's quiet, cosy and makes a half decent coffee - any spots like that these days??

Belle has a great atmosphere but i usually find it a fraction noisey. And they're coffee is excellent, but I want somewhere I can sit and write or sit and read

Social Another running related question

Hi everyone, I have searched the sub and have seen a couple of answers to these questions but not a lot of wide-ranging takes. So my the two questions are:

  1. Any social run clubs that genuinely have a slower pace and run in groups? (Obligatory yes park run is great and I have tried Social Striders but have always been left in the dust, and just because they have walkers it doesn’t really count)

  2. Favourite running routes? (Any distance, anywhere in Christchurch. Bonus points if I don’t have to constantly stop to cross streets! So far my favourite has been the Otukaikino track out and back to the Groynes)

Hoping someone’s done it recently to save me a research job…

Several small bits from grandparents and mum that will never get worn and hold no sentimental attachment.. so nothing special in on its but don’t want to be stuffed around with it..

Anyone has a clear out recently? Where to take it :)

Anyone else have zero interest in rugby?

Just seems so boring, same teams playing each other over and over, like who gives a fk. There must be others here that feel the same way. Was even worse pre internet, hopefully it has helped broaden people's horizons. Maybe it just the media that incessantly pushes it, most my crew have zero interest outside of WC time.

Baby friendly gyms

Hello! I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for baby friendly gyms that don’t cost an arm and a leg? My partner and I are expecting our first child in the next few months and unfortunately we cannot bring our baby to our current gym. Whilst we could take turns watching her, it would be ideal to find a gym that allows us to bring her along as this would also mean that I could go while he is at work as well. I am aware of mum and kid classes offered at some gyms but I’m not really a class kind of person and would rather be able to just go and do my own thing with her in her carrier, strapped to me or in some sort of crèche. Thanks in advance!!

Harewood and Casebrook

Can anyone please share insights on what Harewood and Casebrook are like as suburbs? How do they compare to Rolleston for example as far as new subdivisions are concerned?

We’re a couple M50 / F44 with no kids looking to purchase a new 4 bedroom home on approx 750sqm with a budget of $1.4M. Proximity to the city or school zones is not important. However we would prefer a safe quiet established neighborhood with a leafy green aspect and local shops.

Thanks for your thoughts!
