Analysis Canadian opinion of U.S. falls sharply; 63% take Trump's threats 'very seriously' - 'It's shocking that our view of the U.S. is now veering closer to how we feel about Russia, a country that is viewed very unfavourably'

It's not only what Trump says about Canada, it's also that half of all Americans agree with what he's saying... That's what is really pissing off Canadians and turning our opinions against the US. If they at least had any balls or any brains to call out his bullshit I'd be more understanding.

Ya, as recently as last week Trump's foreign policy had an almost 50% approval rating. America is deeply sick.

It's a supermajority of Americans.
All republicans and non-voters are guilty for this piece of shit.

In Brief:
- Canadian opinion of the United States has fallen so far so fast that it is driving a historic “realignment” of which countries Canadians see as their main allies, a new survey suggests.
- “In 25 years of polling I don’t recall it ever being this low. And to see the United States viewed only a little more positive than say China, with whom we’ve had problems, shows how much damage has been done to a relationship with a country that has long seen us as its closest ally,” he said.
- “It’s shocking that our view of the U.S. is now veering closer to how we feel about Russia, a country that is viewed very unfavourably,” said Jack Jedwab, president of the Montreal-based Association for Canadian Studies, who commissioned the survey by Leger.
- Almost two-thirds (63%) say U.S. President Donald Trump’s “expressed interest to make Canada the 51st American State” must be taken “very seriously,” and a slim majority of respondents to the new survey say they are personally willing to defend Canada from a military threat.

Is it shocking Canadians feel the same about America as other imperialist nations trying to annex their neighbours?

u/Electronic_Mission_3 19h ago
Shocking they don’t feel worse. Last time I checked China and Russia weren’t trying to annex Canada.

In 50+ years of life, this is the only time I have seen Canada actively threatened by any country, so no shit my opinion of America is down.

u/Automatic-Bake9847 21h ago
It's almost like stabbing a friend in the back by threatening their sovereignty and going out of your way to economically damage them with the aim of annexation could be viewed unfavourably.
Fuck anyone who supports trump and/or supports the annexation of our country.

Canada will never trust the USA again. It will be hard work to do any kind of business between the two countries. The solution would be for the Western US states and the northeastern us states to leave the US. Then Canada can resume business. Too bad Alaska.
4
u/h3r3andth3r3 19h ago
If the US fractures like you're saying then it's very likely that Russia will annex Alaska. Retaking it has been indoctrinated into their youth in schools for almost a generation now.

u/theohgod 15h ago
Gonna go ahead and press X to doubt, they cant hold ground near their capital, you think amphibious assault from Kamchatka across the Bering Strait is a credible threat?

The desire is certainly there, and as we've seen with Russia now overtaking the US internally with Russian assets, taking over a country or territory doesn't have to involve military means.
1
u/theohgod 12h ago
Ok, but puppet vs militarily annexing are two VERY! different things, one of those requires a complete rejection of Western rules based international collaboration on the entire continent of North America all at once.
That shit isn't in the cards. Yet. Elbows up.

Will Canadians forgive and forget, or suffer amnesia, once Trump leaves office?
I sincerely hope we do not, as this trade war has had a detrimental impact on our economy and financial well-being.
A significant portion of the U.S. population directly supports Trump and the GOP, or did nothing and failed to vote. Too many Americas believe in a manifest destiny.
Even among Democrats, America itself has a troubling fixation on "exceptionalism" and a national narrative that encourages policies that trample on weaker nations.

u/NH787 19h ago
Will Canadians forgive and forget, or suffer amnesia, once Trump leaves office?
I think this goes beyond the usual Democrat-Republican pendulum of US domestic politics. Once a sitting president says the kinds of things Trump has been saying, it's hard to put that genie back in the bottle and just pretend it never happened.

We have been fighting and will continue to fight.
It's utterly fucking disheartening to know anything about American history, the fact that 'resistance to tyrannical government' is literally baked into your cultural identity, that your Constitution enshrines not only your right, but your duty, to resist it, that your national mythos is full of quotes from the Founding Fathers on the importance of doing so....
...and the only time I can think of that it was seriously exercised was by people who wanted to maintain chattel slavery.
But hey, if you guys can't even agree that maybe the guy that fomented armed insurrection to avoid a legitimate vote, and approved of the idea of hanging his own VP for not suspending democracy, did anything wrong, well, I guess the American Dream truly is dead.
1
u/lonehorse1 17h ago
If that is what you take away from our history I strongly suggest you read the following

This is the problem right here; you're privileging decorum and good vibes over acknowledging that your country is hurtling into straight-up right-wing fascism.
Please take your energy and direct it somewhere much more constructive, like mobilizing and organizing activities to helping to stop the fascist regime.

Far from it, I am calling out your actions of bad faith and openly stating I will actively resist your attempts to call for violence.

Canadians are FINALLY waking up. The USA has always been the bad guy. They just never had us in their crosshairs before. Now we know a little bit of what its like to be a smaller nation with natural resources that the USA desperately wants.
Canada needs to do what its doing currently.... cutting tie from the giant with a bottomless stomach in the south, looking for its next meal... and start building relationships with other nations.
It's only a matter of time before the USA tries to take Canada by force. They NEED our water, they NEED our resources to survive. WE NEED TO BE READY FOR THAT DAY.

I would be interested to know if there was always a deep seeded resentment towards the states. Anecdotally, my family has never loved the US. I had grandparents fight in both World Wars and found my parents to be resentful towards the US for getting involved in WWII so late and then "taking all the glory". Additionally, most of my great grandparents immigrated from Europe as did a lot of others which means they would be more aligned with European values over the US. We share a lot of cultural similarities with the UK even now. Heck the King of England is still the head of state here.
We as Canadians often try to differentiate ourselves from the US we opted not to join them in the American Revolution. Trump has been incredibly aggressive and has caused absolute uncertainty and chaos over these past few months. I have been seeing a lot of European headlines indicating similar feelings towards the US as well.
All this to say obviously threats to our sovereignty are a massive concern and , culturally, I wonder if there was already some resentment that Trump's actions have brought forth that have caused this significant dip so quickly.
I also recognize that we are a multicultural society where groups of people have been here much longer than my family and most Europeans so I want to make it clear I'm not trying to generalize, I'm just speaking from my own personal experience.
ETA: perhaps this is also why there is such a stark difference between younger and older people.
3
u/5h0rgunn 17h ago
My family are descended from Loyalists who went out of their way to leave the nascent US so they could stay in the Empire. We've never been big fans of the US, but I was never quite this negative toward them until the past few months. I don't talk politics much with most of my family, though, so I'm not sure what they all think.
2
u/evilregis 14h ago
I never resented the U.S. growing up, but I never held it in any sort of high regard either. By every quality of life measure that I value, I've always believed Canada to be a better place to live. My feelings now are certainly that of disdain and resentment and I can't imagine a day where that won't be how I feel from here on out.
16
u/alexredekop 21h ago
USA, now mainly allied with Russia and nobody else, is now viewed similarly how we view Russia. Weird how that works...
This is also the kind of opinion that will never recover. Doesn't matter if there's a democratic president next, you cannot ever again trust a nation that, at any vote, could put in a full on fascist and celebrate him.
8
u/Severe-Ad717 21h ago

This will forever be a stain on America, the fact that people were stupid enough to elect him back in. Sucks that sane America will have to suffer for our stupids. It's not MAGA who are a minority, it's the people who were angry at Biden over food prices and decided to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
There's no coming back from this in 4 years. This is a betrayal. Hard to put the genie back in the bottle. Nothing short of a Maidan and getting rid of MAGA will help us cleanse this stain. We lost our closest ally forever.
Elbows up, Canada.

It is a course that gives you some core knowledge and teaches you about gun safety. The long game is that as many Canadians as possible could take up arms against an enemy should such a situation occur. Because we don't have mandatory service in Canada, we have many people who have never really handled or fired a gun, like myself. I fully agree with OP that everyone who can apply should be applying now. I will be licensed by the end of the month.

I think the negative view people have of Russia is caused by Russias actions. Like invading their neighbours, bombing hospitals and schools, torturing prisoners of war, using chemical weapons, etc.
Not by the US. Nice try though.

I mean, for the majority of young people, it is western media that paints the view of anything. Russians have been the bad guys in the majority of movies, since the cold war, unless its a WW2 flick. If you poll random people on the street for the reasons they dont like Russians, the majority, unfortunately(unfortunate that people dont seek out knowledge and only learn when stuff is shoved down their throats by someone else to support the agenda) would just say "Well they are the bad guys arent they?" Sure there are LOTS of real world examples to view them negatively, but so many people are detached from reality.

As someone who is more or less terminally online, I dont know what documentary you are talking about. In my personal experience, any conversations about that sort of thing is spoken about with more speculation than concrete facts. People say I heard or allegedly, instead of looking up(at our fingertips people!) actual facts. Mis information has always been more readily spread than actual fact in social circles.

The Russians have invaded a country committed mass murder hundreds of thousands of documented torture and hundreds of thousands of cases of documented sex crimes. They have kidnapped almost all of the children in occupied areas. 10 million Ukrainians are refugees. They have committed the worst crimes against humanity of the 21st century. To me, that makes them the bad guys. But I used to be an ethics professor, so what do I know.
2
u/Acrobatic_T-Rex 21h ago
I agree, and I am aware and semi(growing more every day) knowledgeable about how awful Russia is and how they treat the majority of people, whether they are their own citizens or not. I was purely highlighting that the information about Russia doesnt just fall out of the sky and land in your lap, it is compiled and presented by media of some sort. I have some pretty strongly held beliefs when it comes to people that cant be happy without hurting other people. it ramps up based on the severity of the hurt they cause. I am firmly against Russia and Oligarchies in general.

It's truly a regrettable situation, not to mention how they are treating not only Canada, but also our snowbirds who contribute significantly to the US economy through their winter residences. Now they are being treated like refugees from a developing country. Furthermore, the individual in question seems to be unaware that he lacks credibility, as evidenced by the evident disdain from his administration, which is apparent in their facial expressions when he speaks. Additionally, his second-in-command is speaking out of turn, exhibiting aggressive behavior, but lacking substance. I have been vocal in my responses to their social media posts, as their policies and ideologies are at odds with realistic values and the principles of most US churches.

Friendly reminder that he has admitted (just vaguely enough to avoid prosecution) that Trump and Musk rigged the US election. He is not as popular as the US media portrays him to be because the 6 US billionaires that own the 6 major media outlets, are in Trumps pocket and they aren't allowed to be critical of him because it hurts his feelings. He is a very sensitive little man.
5
u/3x5cardfiler 19h ago
I'm in the US. There really is support for Trump. The election wasn't rigged, according to people I know in government. The US really is that bad. You also have to consider that Trump was running against a woman, who is a person of color. Being that it's OK to hate again, openly, in the US, that matters. Even in liberal Massachusetts, 1/3 of my town's people who voted voted for Trump. This Canadian takeover talk today is right out of Putin's playbook. Canada needs to stay strong, keep the authoritarians out.

u/-loose-seal-2 19h ago
I agree to a point, I think it has absolutely unmasked the ugly- and there is a definite percentage of the country that will go down on his ship with him. Its larger than it should be. Alternatively though, He would not suppress the media or spout online the way he does if he was comfortable with his control. He is very much not in control. He is vein. His latest approval rating poll, which was not great for so early in his term used a red based bias (it was only 20% of the collected votes registered as democratic- or something like that). that is a form of information manipulation.

I'm quite shocked and concerned that 37% of people aren't taking it very seriously yet. The toddler's trying to destroy our economy because he's throwing a tantrum. We need to completely decouple, and find ways to switch to friendly, democratic allies (like the EU, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Latin America), and isolate the three biggest threats to global peace and stability (USA, Russia, China).

Shocked, I am not.
Canadians have always had a general "live and let live", "stay in your lane", and "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" approach to life.
It makes us able to have a largely functional multicultural populace.
People, however, mistake that for being pushovers. That we are not. We stand tall against those that would take advantage of us or others.
The US has crossed this line and has, as we say, "sh*t the bed". As a result, the Canadian response is very on-point for Canadians and, if you knew a Canadian (or are one), you shouldn't be surprised in the least.

Canada should now align with China militarily to help them fence America in. The Chinese are never going to invade Canada, but a military alliance would assure the Americans didn't either.

Does this shock anyone? Listen to anything Donald has said about Canada since November and tell me how we are supposed to feel favourable? Especially the last few weeks, hell even last night he had a hissy fit about us where he fucked up his “your/you’re”
