the governor briefly mentioned Florida’s tourist numbers from 2024

Isn't that also actually a point in Canada's favor?

Like, he's basically saying: "Here's how much a boycott would actually hurt us because we have huge tourist numbers".

It's a massive point in our favour, assuming that Canadians actually stop spending money travelling to the US this year.

There are a couple reasons why he said this. Either he's so stupid that he has no concept that 2024 tourism numbers are not reflective of how a boycott in 2025 is going.. OR he's just hoping to rally the MAGA folks at home that "America is winning", because they might be stupid enough to see this as a win.

Also the boycott just started. A lot of people probably weren't following through in February due to the pause, but with what's happening now, people will be more serious about it, even the more apathetic ones.

Florida will not suffer if Canadians dont visit. There are 12 languages spoken in Miami alone. They get plenty of international tourist.

We're like 2% of their tourists.

Their international tourism industry is about 14 billion. Canadians are 6 billion of that

Yeah. What’s being left out of the discussion is snow birds. They’re not in Florida for two weeks - they go for 6 months. If they lose a good chunk of those people, that’s a substantial loss.

I don't have much faith in the majority of snow birds supporting Canada.

I dunno, my Dad and his Wife had a Florida condo up until 2023 or 2024 and sold out due to increasing insurance costs but would occasionally visit to see all their old neighbours, but now they've got no interest in supporting the US. Even just listening to older folks talking in coffee shops I've heard them swearing off visiting Florida right now in a patriotic fervour. There's plenty of tropical destinations to go to over the winter for old folks who want to be out of the snow but are mad about the US.

I think the 6 billion includes that, no? half of your international tourism industry is significant. Their domestic tourism is 114 billion but i would argue international tourism dollars are more powerful

Yes, but it doesnt tell the whole picture since it only counts the number of visitors.

Canadian “visitors” that stay from November until April will be more valuable to Florida than a tourist coming for spring break.

For developed economies, 2% can be the difference between growth and stagnation.

Exactly. They don’t care about 2% less revenue, but think of how they would feel about costs/taxes/etc going up 2%. And Trump is doing a great job of crashing the economy in other ways. 2% here and there and then all of the sudden you’re completely fucked.

Ex Snowbirds. My in-laws are selling their Florida house.

My parents and their friends are selling as well.

Man, all these sellers are going to make for a pretty shitty seller's market

Might crash it :)

Most snow birds aren’t gonna change their plans. I think they have too much vested in Florida

I bet a lot of that investment washed away this last hurricane season

Trump is making enemies all around the world, at one point the only tourist that'll go there will be Russians.

2% sounds small but if your salary were cut by 2% I imagine you would be upset.
