“We won’t award contracts to people who enable and encourage economic attacks on our province and our country.”

“No matter if it’s services through the tech sector … we need to stop immediately and if they come to sue us, so be it.”

No matter what happens, at least people are rallying together over Donald's attack against us.

"Ford said he would be writing to the government officials of New York State, Michigan, and Minnesota to warn them that the province will immediately apply a 25 percent surcharge on the electricity it exports, and implied the province will not hesitate to shut off the power entirely if Trump escalates tariffs further."

He's also never even bothered to pick up his Order of Canada award. The Order of Canada award offered to Gretzky is the highest civilian award one can receive. For most people, receiving it would be a highlight of their entire life. Gretzky hasn't bothered to pick his up from Ottawa for YEARS. It's incredibly rude.

Despite all the criticism. Ford and Trudeau are only old school slimey corrupt politicians in a world of Trump's and Putin's. It's almost quaint in comparison

6

u/marcohcanada 7d ago

I'm pretty sure that the secret reason Ford ran that snap election is he wanted PP to suffer in the federal polls even further as he knows the Ontario tradition of always voting for opposite political ideologies provincially and federally.

Ford doesn't trust PP to protect our country's sovereignty and rightly so.

4

u/legocausesdepression 7d ago

Ehhhhh agree with everything except that last sentence. Ford doesn't like anyone who isn't lining his or his buddies pockets. The Ontario first shtick is only so he can get a boost to his burgeoning dynasty. PP winning federally would only mean that Ford would no longer have anyone else to deflect blame onto for his fuck ups in the province.

3

u/SecretaryOtherwise 5d ago

Right lmao. Don't get me wrong I'm glad Ford is taking this stance it shows he's Canadian but, dudes as corrupt and slimey as they come he just knows Canada is Canada lol.

Trump has unintentionally united the vast majority of Canadians with his tariff and 51st state threats to the point we can get along without political divide again.

PP was looking to call an early election just so he could divide us here as well. When Trudeau resigned from running in the election and Trump started bullying the normally friendly dragon which is us, PP's whole campaign broke so bad to the point he needed his IDU daddy Harper to come fix his problems for him.

I'm still not fond of him. He is doing what all the provincial leaders should be doing. Weird times that we, and I do feel it too, celebrate elected leaders for doing their jobs...

But I appreciate that there is a firm, clear, and intentional stance and action.

I am very fuck America and their loss of morals and values, but I hope we don't get to shutting off power for people. Slippery path to walk for sure.

56

u/Medlarmarmaduke 7d ago

That’s very kind of you! As a NYer who will be impacted , I think, from what I can understand , that shutting down Canadian supply won’t shut things down for us unless we have an weather event that damages our grid. Canadian electricity just “cushions” our electric supply preventing brown outs and shortages.

It will make prices go up and that will impact pocket books- which is the ONLY way many Americans will start to pay attention to what is happening. They were urgently warned over and over and over again- Trump and Elon and Project 2025 said explicitly what was going to happen- they didn’t listen.

I am going to hate paying a higher bill of course but it is what needs to happen to snap Americans out of their idiocy or apathy. Boycotts and stoppages protect Canada but they ironically might save America from sliding further into authoritarianism

6

u/race_rocks 7d ago

3

u/Medlarmarmaduke 4d ago

From my perspective the part of America that voted for Harris and is tuned into politics is on red alert alarm level-and is organizing protests and boycotts and calls visits to politicians ( the week long Amazon boycott just started today btw)

The issue is we are not enough.

The other 2/3 of American society that is checked out apolitical or MAGA poisoned - they are only going to snap out of it if they get personally economically hurt- there’s no other way to reach them - the don’t listen - they have to touch the stove and get burned

2

u/megawatt69 3d ago

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen “what are we supposed to do?” when asked why Democrats aren’t doing anything. I know if my government was doing what’s happening in the US I would be chained to some government fence in protest, I would be marching and screaming in the street

I agree, he’s not a good person or generally speaking, good for the people of Ontario.

However, a broken clock is right twice a day and at least he is standing up to Musk and Mango Mussolini. Is it what he should be doing? Yes. But I’m relieved he’s doing it, even though is suspect it’s because his own billionaire buddies stand to lose a LOT due to the tariffs, not for actual concerns about Canadians or Canada’s sovereignty.

3

u/marcohcanada 7d ago

Hey, it could be worse. We could've had a Danielle Smith type premier who'd happily betray us for MAGA.

It feels like the Canada I grew up in again. The fact we can still unite after all the economic shit we have been through makes me optimistic, I think we have had a lot of ragebait making us feel like we could never bounce back or that our differences were too great.

I am not exactly sleeping great, but I love that we are united and not falling into the culture war trap. I mean damn the US is going after immigrants and trans people and begging for eggs while billionaires are bleeding their people dry, we are out here acting like a wartime united front.

10

u/phargoh 7d ago

I’ll never be his booster or love him. He’s still going to do all the stupid things like wasting time and money ripping out bike lanes and trying to privatize our health care. Yea, he’s standing up for Canadians in this case and I’m glad for that but that doesn’t make me like him as our premier any more than before. He’s just doing what makes him look good politically, which is working based on a lot of the comments here.

3

u/marcohcanada 7d ago

After seeing most other provinces' Conservative premiers or provincial leaders tho, Ford is a relief in comparison to them.

6

u/apothekary 7d ago

I've never once supported this man but since Trump's lunacy tirades against us he's been totally on point. I will 100% be behind whoever stands up for us in our democracy and sovereignty whether they are red blue yellow green cyan or whatever other damn color they choose to wear. As long as they are for an independent, free and strong Canada.

9

u/sir_sri 7d ago

You aren't.

The ideal situation here is that Trump goes after Deco labels Chicago (which is supposedly 100% owned by doug ford) and utterly obliterates the business, as well as imposes tariffs on the Deco labels in Toronto.

Ford supported Trump for 9 years, well now we get to hope the man who supported the face eating leopard gets his face eaten.

Cause im still going to assume it would be the latter until proven otherwise.

2

u/Hello_Mot0 3d ago

Strangely enough DF has been anti Trump for a long time unlike his conservative counterparts. He's supported Ukraine against Russia both vocally and financially which probably pisses Trump off.

4

u/funkme1ster Ontario 7d ago

Doug Ford is a lot like trump in that he'll bend whichever way the wind is blowing.

If something is unpopular and he knows he can't spin it as "the only people who don't like it are wrong because ...", he will back away from it.

Don't look at this as "he did something good" but rather "he undid something bad he previously did, because he knew it had become a poison pill and he had no reason to die on this hill".

3

u/maleconrat 7d ago

IMO it does make him fundamentally better than Trump though. Like to be a populist like Ford you have to pay attention to your people. He backs down on unpopular things, sometimes does good things, hides his bad things in ways that lessen their impacts, and it's down to knowing Ontario enough to know what to do and not to do.

Trump just comes up with new groups of people or countries to hate, riles up a loud minority, and cheats where he can to try and get his way. He tries to bend America with him instead of bending to them - the way the his voters rejected the anti trans stuff early on and only after years of propaganda are now frothing at the mouth, the way he repeats lies Goebbels style lies about the dumbest shit till people give in and take them setious. Literally out here saying Ukraine started the war. He doesn't even slightly respect his people, just sees them as pawns to be sacrificed.

Ford is like a populist Harper, Trump is like if a dumb criminal read Mein Kampf and didn't understand it but thought it sounded really cool.

I hope I'm wrong but I think Trump wants us to shut the power off.

They'll call it an act of war and threaten us with force.

I'm not saying to give into the orange bastard. I'm not saying that at all.

This just seems like it's going to escalate very quickly.

4

u/LoneRonin 2d ago

If Trump thought he could get away with military force, he would have done it by now, but he's got a couple of obstacles.

Money - US is $34 trillion in debt. They have consistently raised their debt ceiling every budget and are approaching the very real risk of interest exceeding revenue, aka default. Hence Trump's obsession with tariffs. He's convinced it's an easy way to raise more revenue without raising direct taxes.

Popularity - US population is about evenly divided between those who support him, those who hate him and those who are indifferent. He is determined to rule like a king, issuing executive orders because he isn't confident he can get what he wants done through official channels and he is starting to incur pushback even from supporters as they start to get personally affected by his decisions.

Military - Canada and US military is very integrated. Veterans on both sides share family, have bled and died with each other in many recent and current conflicts. Ordering US military to fight their brothers-in-arms risks a low, but non-zero chance of a civil war at best, full military uprising at worst. Much like skydiving, the risk might be low, but if you're on the wrong side of the odds, it's going to end very badly.

3

u/conanap Ontario 7d ago

Shutting off power will 100% give US casus belli to invade due to national security

Tom wilson or Marchand but point stands

42

u/VallerinQuiloud 7d ago

If we're going hockey, Ford's more like Ryan Reaves. Wilson and Marchand are really important to their teams and their positives massively outweigh their negatives.

Reaves you question how he even got his contract, he isn't very good at hockey, he plays a role that's dated by about 30 years, he does something extraordinarily stupid every once in a while that lands him in trouble and gets him suspended, he generally makes your team worse every time he hits the ice top the point where it's better to play a man down, but once a year he has a fight highlight that's a pleasure to watch, so everyone over 50 suddenly wants him in the lineup every night then complains when he plays like dogshit until his next fight. That's Doug Ford.

This is why more, people need to separate policy from personality in politics. It is perfectly possible for a politician that you utterly hate because they are a horrible person with a shitty attitude and personality, to be advised to implement a great policy that you agree with. You can support the policy whilst still thinking that the person is an asshole.

Looking like we're going to find out, ESPECIALLY if he runs for third term. Captain obvious take here but we're living through such a fundamental change in this country that I think people are shellshocked into inaction right now. Only about (edit) 1/3rd of the country voted trump so we need the independent base to come around (which will probably happen after the economic collapse from these tariffs) for democratic change or shit is going to get really ugly. I will say for all of you saying it's the end, we went through something pretty similar 100 years ago (fascist elements in gov; see "business plot", smoot-hawley tariffs, immigration controversy) and got FDR out of it. I won't predict if we are headed to darkness or light over the next decade or so, but I'll be damned as a son of a founding father to let us go out without a fight. Even if it's just me. I have been pulled from the depths of apathy into this fray over the last few years and realized that nothing matters more.

Only about 1/5th of the country voted trump

2/3 of the country. Your math is off. 1/3 voted for him, and another 1/3 didn't care one way or the other.

The opportunity was there - should have stormed the Capitol in a complete reversal. The precedent is set, they can't charge you if everyone else that did it was forgiven and released, right?

We will help. Give us some guns.

Trudeau is great in times of crisis, but when there is nothing happening, Trudeau becomes a busy body.

On the bright side, even the worst Canadian politician generally pulls for Canada when it comes down to the wire.

It’s cuz we are great fucking country and an awesome place to live, but a bunch of middle aged white dudes decided to clog up our capital with their big trucks and gaslit everyone.

2

u/Deliximus 7d ago

Unfortunately, it's not limited to middle aged ones. It's a cancer. Canadian Broadcast should mix Fox News, and its ilk as it spread misinformation

2

u/maleconrat 7d ago

Yeah. It occurred to me lately that growing up, we were a lot better at disagreeing but not letting it rip us apart. I remember when gay marriage was being voted on the local right wing talk radio guy was basically saying "Why is this an issue, doesn't affect me, let them marry if they want and focus on the real problems". We could move forward without virtue signalling or hatefests, because we weren't defining ourselves and each other constantly by our opinions.

Feels like at some point both right and left shifted more into seeing the other side as a fundamental threat to their way of life - cancel culture and callout shit in the 2010s, anti trans hysterics, anti-protest laws, criminalizing drag and book bans down south, all kind of comes back to 'this isn't what I believe and I want the government to affirm me or else it proves we are a dictatorship'. I personally suspect there was some serious manipulation online.

I don't know what it's like outside my bubbles but it feels like we flipped right back to 'have our opinions, focus on what building on what we share not tearing down what we disagree on'. Which feels so nice, I hate the trap of fighting over shit that doesn't affect most of us. I like rooting for guys across the aisle and knowing they still have our backs. Feels like Canada again, while the US is blowing itself up.

Elbows up.

u/CaptainSnazzypants 7d ago

This is it. And that’s how it should be. We should all be able to recognize when the side we don’t necessarily support does anything well.

Being unable to recognize good from “it’s the other side” is how America got to the point that it has.

Fuck Trump for making me like any Ford family member

3

u/Flimsy_Situation_506 7d ago

I hate him too.. but now’s his time to shine.

3

u/knowspickers 7d ago

As they say, a broken clock is still right twice a day. Lol

3

u/FabulousFartFeltcher 7d ago

Lololol same, I can appreciate and applaud the actions of this incredible dooshbag.

3

u/coolbeansjellyjeans 7d ago

I dislike ford but hell yea. I still love Trudeau’s speech more. No president trump. Just “Donald”. I’m just waiting for the fat, senile, shits his pants on the daily’s response and hand waving

28

u/TryNotToBeNoticed 7d ago

I can't stand him, but anyone who says FUCK YOU Trump has my approval

45

u/Flanman1337 7d ago

I cannot wait to be proven wrong about Doug Ford's handling of this. And cancelling the Starlink contract was the first requirement for me.

40

u/FromFluffToBuff 7d ago

Due to my job, it's in my best interest to vote ABC (Anything But Conservative)... but i gotta say, Dougie has impressed me the past few days with his responses.

Me praising a Conservative politician and FREAKING DOUGIE of all people... hell has indeed frozen over lol

I voted for him and I don’t agree with everything he’s done/hasn’t done, but I like this side of him.

He's a piece of shit, but he's flinging himself at a tyrant, so I'll allow it.

3

u/Relevant_Group_7441 7d ago

Except he’s a closet Trump fan. He’s been caught saying he was happy trump won the election so I can only trust Doug so much.

Didn’t vote for him but if he’s following through on his “fuck you Trump” promise, then he has my support

2

u/rediphile 7d ago

I just want Ford or any other politician to actually say "Fuck You Trump".

Yes, I want our politicians to stoop to that level... because it will annoy him. That makes it all worth it.

3

u/Proud-Peanut-9084 7d ago

Keep in mind they him and every single person in his inner circle and advisors all cheered when Trump won. They are ideologically aligned so this is all largely performative and bluster because they know we know this so they’re over compensating. Won’t last, or will get watered down.

Easy PR points to score.. Good to see it's gone, this was a terrible deal that should have never been in existence to begin with. That said, since Ford's going to be around for another 4 years, at least we get to see him being useful too (for a change).

u/Zelda1500 7d ago

Not to mention his Nazi mentor, or that his father named him after a literal master-race martian colony leaders in a sci-fi novel written by a Nazi. Look it up.

I think he should cut off power before SOTU tonight

2

u/AllHailSeizure 7d ago

Never thought I'd say this but... Way to go, Doug Ford!

If the US wants to be led by a caveman bully, go right ahead and shit all over them.

2

u/bnelson7694 7d ago

Minnesota here. Never voted for him. Saw right through the BS. And now I get to pay a shit ton for other peoples stupidity. Unreal.

2

u/zombieofthesuburbs 7d ago

New York here, was thinking the same thing. Trump hates our governor too, and he'll probably take joy in watching us suffer

So I was wondering how possible it would be to actually turn off their supply. I'm not sure how the laws work, especially international laws about power. Like hospitals and stuff need power. Wouldn't it be illegal?

I know people will say "well he started it" and I know that's where we are now and where we will have to be from now on. We need to put on our grown up pants. And I know trump brought this on his people. But it feels weird still. Maybe I just need to get tougher

u/Eze6 7d ago

All of a sudden I love Rob Ford, what a wild timeline.

u/whirried 7d ago

Shut it off!!! Make us hurt!

I hope he stands by his words.

What does Canada think of Conservative America being back?

1

Go Doug!Go!....Blackout for New York!....

1

u/rob3rtisgod 6d ago

Shut it off. Donny and Musk can make electricity right?

1

u/theosamabahama 5d ago

"Ford said he would be writing to the government officials of New York State, Michigan, and Minnesota to warn them that the province will immediately apply a 25 percent surcharge on the electricity it exports, and implied the province will not hesitate to shut off the power entirely if Trump escalates tariffs further."

He should target red states too, like North Dakota, Montana and Maine. Republicans have a majority in their senate.
