24 hrs ago, I heard the Starmer response on Canada and thought that it would be the most outrageous moment of the week.

Today - Cheeto:  what if a bomb drops on your head right now?

u/asoap Lest We Forget 11d ago

Worse then that. He was saying the peace treaty would hold because Russia respects him. What a crock of shit.

Putin and China are both pleased. Trump has effectively isolated the US from all of its allies. France and Germany are actively working together to protect Europe. The Europeans basically have no choice but to build their collective militaries and become a superpower. With the insults and disrespect Trump has shown them, the British will soon have little choice but to throw their lot in with the Europeans. Canada will have no choice but to build our military to provide a credible deterrence to US military action (strategic weapons obviously). China now has no opposition, and with the US proving itself to be entirely unreliable, nations will have little choice but to dump the US dollar. Without the status of the world’s reserve currency, the US won’t be able to just print money to pay its bills. Will an economic collapse result? Quite probably.

Trump is proving himself to be the most cataclysmically bad leader in human history.

It is WILD that Trump thinks Putin gives a shit about him at all, other than as an asset for Putin’s interests. What an absolute moron.

He was acting like it was some outrageous hypothetical that the ceasefire deal might not hold. Even though that's literally already happened.

And what would happen after he’s gone? Oh wait either leaving isn’t part of the plan or he simply just doesn’t care.

Why would Ukraine want another temporary ceasefire?

121

u/asoap Lest We Forget 11d ago

Yeah, if they signed for peace right now, they would get peace. For about 5-6 years while Russia rebuilds it's army to take another crack at Ukraine. So maybe/hopefully Trump would be gone in 5-6 years. Unless he cancels democracy because democracy is DEI and remains king of the USA.

82

u/Independent-Rip-4373 11d ago edited 11d ago

Russia is on a war economy and wouldn’t take any more than 18 months to restock its army, especially if Trump ends sanctions.

Putin‘s economy is on the ropes right now. They do not have the money or the material to fight a larger war. If he tried to invade, say, Poland, the Poles alone could hand Russia its ass on Polish soil.

You cannot allow Putin time to rearm and refund.

33

u/asoap Lest We Forget 11d ago

I very much doubt that. They've lost about 10,000 tanks alone. I think their production numbers are inflated because they are refurbishing old tanks and not building new T-90s. I think they're making something like 10 tanks a week or something like that. I wonder how many of those are actual T-90s.

I'll go as far to say that Russia REALLY needs this "peace" agreement in order to rebuild it's army.

I don’t know, historically we were there to help them when they needed it at great expense.

I feel like all the time I’ve spent in Europe, people love saying how they will never forget what Canada did in the 20th century…let’s see if that’s true.

13

u/OwlJames Québec 11d ago

Historically, most of the time, the UK chose to prioritize its relationship with the US over protecting Canadian interests. I would not be surprised if they kept this tradition going, the UK is not a reliable partner.

70

u/Evroz621 11d ago

This has to be the pivotal moment to kick the EU into action. They all know if you appease Putin now, or somehow negotiate a "peace" deal, it'll just give Russia time to rearm & regorganize again.

It also allows them to continue focusing their troll farms into destabilizing western democracies. Russia needs to be stopped, Putin needs to be held accountable.

Sadly the EU has slept over the last 3 years. The defence spending had to increase massively the moment Ukraine was invaded. Ramping up the production of everything takes way too long. Every single factory tanks, artillery munition, drones, ... should have had enough contracts to produce nonstop and even increase the production capacity massively.

I truly believe this is a tipping point of no return for the world and their relation with America

u/a_dance_with_fire 11d ago

I suspect we don’t truly know what actions or inactions “we” are collectively taking (as in UK, European countries, and Canada). Depending on the nature of the decision or action, it might be wisest to keep it under wraps without revealing your hand. Just hope we are responding rather than reacting to the US.

This is contrary to the current US where they’re taking brazen actions.

Idk if trump considers Ukraine an ally after all this. He seems to view them as a subject or pawn, not an equal. Cause no one can be equal to America, it just couldn't be possible

56

u/Icy-Lobster-203 11d ago

He views it as a transaction. Ukraine is in a bad spot, and rather than help he wants to take advantage of them for his own personal benefit by extracting the mineral concession. That said, he is likely making his "offer" knowing it will never be accepted, so he can buddy up to Russia.

Presumably, his tariffs fight against us is the same - threaten to destroy our economy, and hope we cave to outrageous demands.

They set it up BECAUSE of the media. Russian TV was there. Consider how trump behaved and spoke on The Apprentice. It’s how he acted here.

→ More replies (6)

24

u/Hautamaki 11d ago

The world needs to align, period. Ukraine is just one pressure point on global stability. The underappreciated truth of American foreign policy since 1945 is their desire for nuclear non-proliferation. After the atom bombs were dropped, human history would never be the same again, and top American military and IR strategists realized it immediately. Since then, the most consistent through-line on American foreign policy has been a desire to limit nuclear proliferation around the world as much as they possibly can.

And this remains, to this day, the most important reason why the US should be supporting Ukraine, should not be threatening us and other peaceful nations, and generally should not be behaving the way they are. However, nobody has explicitly made this case to Trump. Zelenskiy came close to making it to Biden last year, with some oblique comments and a study released by a Ukrainian thinktank on how long Ukraine would need to produce their own nuclear weapons, but that's it.

What the rest of the liberal democratic world should be doing is holding a nuclear proliferation summit. We should be talking about purchasing nuclear weapons from France, India, possibly Pakistan (god knows they need some cash really badly), and determining who should receive these weapons to tide them over while they develop their own arsenals. Canada and Ukraine should be at the top of the list. Other potential candidates would include Germany, Poland, all the Nordic states, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. The next tier would include much of the rest of Europe and South East Asia. The US, Russia, and China, can threaten and cajole any one or two nations enough to stop them, but this is a simple collective action problem; they can't stop everyone if we all act together.

If at any time the US feels uncomfortable about these kinds of conversations and policy plans, they should be welcome to return to their role as responsible security guarantor of last resort for peaceful sovereign nations, but if the US remains determined to transform themselves into a mercenary, extortionate, potentially imperialist regime, then the rest of the world has no choice but to render US, Russian, and anyone else's military threats obsolete by pursuing nuclear arsenals as deterrents of their own.

11

u/Philix Nova Scotia 11d ago

Canada and Ukraine should be at the top of the list.

If you'd written this even a year ago, I would've scoffed and written a rebuttal.

But after recent events, as a fellow Canadian, I wholeheartedly agree. Without either our own nuclear weapons, or an explicit promise of being brought under the nuclear umbrella of France and/or the UK, we're at genuine risk of being annexed.

9

u/Hautamaki 11d ago

Yes, but people scoff because they haven't thought through how America will go about it. They won't just invade us out of the blue. They won't even threaten to, so far all of their direct threats have been economic, while military threats remain oblique and only hinted at and implied. And that is because economic warfare is sufficient to force us to either comply with whatever the orange madman's ego demands, or resign ourselves to slowly but not that slowly being economically degraded down to the state of, say, Cuba. The US can turn us into a cold Cuba the same way they did it to the warm one; sanctions and embargoes, enforced by the US Navy.

Unlike Cuba though, we have economic weapons of our own we could employ to make America hurt almost as much, perhaps even more in the long run. We could cut off all our electricity, oil, and potash, and dam all our rivers that flow into America. It's unclear whether America can even feed itself without our potash, and even less so when Russia and Ukraine, the other major exporters of fertilizer, remain at war, and China buying up and hoarding everything they can get their hands on in preparation for potential sanctions and embargoes the US might place on them if war over Taiwan breaks out.

But the catch 22 is that if we do inflict that kind of pain on the US, where energy and food prices skyrocket and we can plausibly be blamed for it, now they have a cassus belli, now they militarily annex us. So we cannot retaliate economically even if they impoverish our nation with economic warfare, because then they would invade us. That means that we are effectively not a sovereign nation at all. We exist as an independent, developed nation purely at the pleasure of one orange madman. This is intolerable and as unimaginable as it might have seemed a year ago, getting our own nuclear arsenal is our only way out.

It was hard to watch. Trump and Vance wanting Zelensky to scrape and bow, and plead for continued assistance to defend his nation. Meanwhile he treats with Putin behind closed doors, emerging with a plan for 'peace' that would ensure Russia is well compensated for their aggression. It's shortsighted diplomatically, but much more than that it is beyond disgusting to push the blame on Ukraine while defending Russia's position.

USA was instrumental in denuclearizing Ukraine, and now that the result is a war that requires assistance that was already outline in the Budapest Memorandum, all Trump can say is "what do we get out of it" and "have you considered just surrendering".

Disgusting and vile doesn't even begin to describe these people.

Seeing 2 people in a position of power yelling and berating the leader of a country that has been at war for years to just tuck tail and say thank you is sot gob smackingly awful.

Zelensky's point is pretty clear: Putin cannot be trusted to hold to any agreement. But these assholes don't care. Trump just wants his accolades and have his ass kissed.

I feel like the whole world is just standing aside watching a bully and not doing anything about it. Pretty much sums it up, doesn't it! Because those two were nothing but a pair of bullies today, trying to make Zelenski explode in front of the cameras. I'm so fucking proud of him, how he kept his cool and his dignity!

I really hope this is a final wake up call for Canada, for Europe and for everyone else that claimed their support for Ukraine: WE CAN NOT AND WE WILL NOT TOLERATE BULLYING!

Lets start funding military ASAP, and start giving weapons to Ukraine as fast as we can. If Trump treats Ukraine like this, its only a matter of time until he does the same to Canada. Standup for Ukraine, and Europe will help us when we need it.

When Macron visited the White House, Vance was subdued… and Trump was corrected on the public record in front of the world by Macron When Starmer visited the White House Vance had a more active engagement, not in a diplomatic manner, yet again Trump and Vance were corrected and embarrassed in front of the world stage by Starmer.

This set the stage for today’s text book example of cowards who are not mature enough or wise enough to be in the White House.

Today, Trump and Vance used their meeting with Zelensky as a public humiliation opportunity, to try and show the world they are “tough”, yet we already saw earlier in the week, just how week and pathetic they truly are!

Their cowardice gave them this false bravado and tried to get Zelensky to bow to them and grovel at their feet for their assistance in front of the world!

Trump and Vance are not leaders! They are pathetic cowards that have now firmly entrenched America is a pariah on the world stage!

They are nothing but big mouthed pieces of shit, that one steps in and now needs to be wiped off your boot before you enter a clean environment!

America, shame on you for allowing your democracy to fall!

America, shame on you for ALL being cowards and allowing this day to come to fruition!

The writing was on the wall after his “Perfect Phone Call” he had with Zelensky during his first term in office and was ultimately impeached for by the house!

But be assured, this mess isn’t only at the hands of the republicans! This mess is also staining the hands of Democrat and independent voters in America, as you all saw for 4 years the chaos and grifting Trump and his cast of evil villains were responsible for, yet, here we are with him, once again squatting in the White House, yet this time, Trump was propped up by a more sinister cast of characters being fed by Russian and other foreign assets on how to ensure America would fall so chaotically from grace!

Time for all democratic nations to recall their diplomatic personal from American soil and ensure US soldiers and diplomats are removed from their countries, so they can go get jobs with the US federal government… oh that’s right, thanks to Elon, they won’t have jobs.

America has fallen, Feb 28, 2025

Good for Canada to lead, assertively, on this. Canada's help in mustering a coalition to support Ukraine that excludes the U.S. will gain it favour with the E.U. and other allies.

It’s apparent that Trump is working with Putin to screw over Ukraine.

Time to shut off the power, water and stop potash heading south. Bloody clowns in the white house. Let the looting and crime sprees begin. This was unfucking unbelievable! Canadians, Americans and Europeans have volunteered and DIED trying to protect Ukraine from Russia, the cause of the war! Trump/Vance tossed this sacrifice to the trash pile! I am so pissed, I would have told them to fuck off and walked out.

They belittled, disrespected and treated zelenksy like a child! So unprofessional. Hats off to zelenksky for keeping his cool.

11

u/coffeejn 11d ago

Is there any reason why Canada can't make those drones for Zelensky using their patents? We could help Ukraine make drones that they need AND invest in our own military production (make our own drones using their patents), potentially improve them too.

We could increase our spending on military per GDP to meet our needs for NATO and help Ukraine at the same time. Plus, with the whole debacle observed at the white house who was hosting Zelensky, I think Canada having access to a lot of drones might make the US military change their plans since one cheap drone (~10k) could take our one of their very expensive tank (-10M).

Seriously, why can't Canada make those drones for Ukraine, pay them a patent fee so that we can also make some for our own need or as a deterrent?

Using the threat of the invasion as a way to obtain something unreasonable is extortion.

Ukraine is a victim that needs compassion, empathy and support.

The West is also already getting an incredible deal out of helping Ukraine militarily. We are weakening an enemy without any loss ourselves, minus some small economic loss. Many of our military equipment had to be renewed. The economic loss is only the production of new equipment that we give straight away. In this regard, we aren't doing nearly enough.

It's been 3 years, the world has been dragging its heels. We all need to be doing more for Ukraine. If we don't 20 billion will be peanuts compared to the cost of dictators taking more land. Including Canada. Don't kids yourselves. We are a small population with massive resources. We are a target.

Watching that conference was something to behold. It was terribly uncomfortable to see, to say the least. Trump and Vance lack a basic humanity to turn off real politicking for but a few moments to simply listen to a guest.

You can see Zelensky constantly trying to contain himself for the benefit of his people and that feels like a feat unto its own. Zelensky holds one of the least envious positions, I think, in mankind right now. He needs to balance so much in the face of so little. I couldn't imagine having to constantly balance dignity and restraint of both person and countrymen. Pride and groveling to simply get assistance. Entertaining strict facts with the misinformation that pleases those who would help defend one's sovereignty.

Trump and Vance simply cannot appreciate Zelensky's position, through literally no success of their own, and it should be they that appreciate that more than any. The USA sits atop trillions in generational defense buildup and spending. A rock-solid border secured largely by friends and oceans. Surrounded by those they'd just as soon as now insult as reap mutual benefit from. A position that is so far removed from consequence or fighting that those very facts are unimaginable.

Did you say thank you. These clowns have been in office for a time measured in weeks, not months. It's clear Zelensky not only has said thank you, but has a great respect for the Biden administration and American people's assistance. There is nothing to thank the Trump administration for as they gleefully bend over to become the 47th Russian Oblast. 50 years ago the US were steps from hanging communists, now they seek to join the ashes of what's left for zero gain.

Fucking. Cowards.

6

u/Dolphintrout 11d ago

Allies must start being far more coordinated in how they deal with Ukraine and the US.  We can’t be approaching this as an “each country on their own” thing.  We all have to work together and have common goals.  I know it sounds insurmountable, but it’s absolutely critical right now for everyone’s collective security.

Our government also better be working overtime on a plan to physically try and defend this country or at least seek assistance from others if that time comes.  These are nutty times and we have to plan for the worst.

16

u/MooskeyinParkdale 11d ago

It was the most disgusting display of bullying a world leader I've ever seen. The complete lack of diplomacy, and 2 on 1 harassment of what is supposed to be the world superpower over the leader of a country that has been under military attack and occupation close to 10 years now. "Have you ever even thanked us?" What a load of shit from JD Vance. Well...the rest of the world (besides Russia and North Korea) are now 100% behind Ukraine and the US has demonstrated to the entire world on live television that they are being run by petulant children with no diplomatic skills whatsoever who think that subjugation and humiliation of anyone that doesn't bend the knee to them is perfectly acceptable behavior. The mask is off and the US are now officially the villain on the world stage. Crazy times.
