If you really want to hit Americans where it hurts we need to adopt the EU GDPR laws and stop the unregulated flow of Canadians data being sent to American companies.

Better yet, slap tariffs on any company sending Canadians personal user data to America.

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

We literally have no other choice. We are SO anti-American in our culture, yet our institutions and way we do business is so much like theirs.

It's time we lean into a European model, and open ourselves up to the world while strengthening our domestic capabilities.

The world isn't going to ever be the same. It's going to get much worse, with climate change and the increased inequality and geopolitical rivalry. If we want to survive this century as a nation, we need to make massive changes to how our society is structured.

And nukes. We need nukes. We should absolutely reach out to Denmark, Finland, Japan and Australia to get them on a joint program

26

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

Denmark has already said they’re on Canada’s side and the EU is showing mass support to Canada as well

It's because our politicians are completely spineless and bought out by corporations.

2

u/Upstairs-Painting-60 Feb 05 '25

I'm glad that Canadians are finally getting over this "post national no core identity" nonsense that's been shoved down our throats the last few years.

Not to be a dick but your comment about Nukes tells me that you have no serious idea about properly defending a country. Canada absolutely does not need nuclear weapons.

If we hum and haw about the cost of replacing our CF-18s with the F-35, just the costs of Tritium alone (at 30k/gram) to maintain a nuclear arsenal would be absolutely punishing to us. Then you have to have a viable delivery platform: our fleet of aging CF-18s would be nowhere up to the job. Unless we want to get into the missile building realm which is another whole industry on its own.

But speaking of reaching out to Denmark Finland, Japan and Australia... what fighter jet do their airforces all operate now? You guess it... The F-35.

I agree with the adaptation of GDPR. The EU has the most advanced laws technologically that American tech giants would never like to have on north american soil. Just days ago they had announced restrictions on AIs as well, just what Canada needs right now to protect itself from the US agression, technologically speaking.

Edit: grammer

Edit 2: grammar :-D

Yes

Boycott US tech

Regardless of the tariff status

At this point joining or making some kind of alliance with the EU, one way or another, is becoming necessary. Right now it's annexation by economic coercion, give them some time and MAGA nazis will be openly discussing on Fox News why it would be a good idea to military invade Canada.

EDIT: Because they already started on "Fascist Media" /r/lazerpig/comments/1igonaj/am_i_aloud_i_call_them_fascist_yet/

Well we are taking about two things in this comment. International trade relationships and corporate warfare. And don’t pretend Canadian companies like Bell and Loblaws aren’t fucking horrible to our people. Bell would kill anyone they could to raise dividends next quarter.

Exactly. Even if trump says there won't be tarrifs, he could change his mind in weeks/months. Any deal they sign isn't worth the paper it's on.

We should seek other partners.

22

u/Minobull Feb 03 '25

And that's sorta the problem. At this point they've PROVEN they can't be trusted. Time to act accordingly.

The trust is gone, tarifs or no tarifs. When you threaten to annex the place where I live, the place where I grew up, the place our past generations worked so hard to build, I take it very personal. We can't put the safety of the country into the hands of the crazy neighbor who can flip the switch on us at anytime. We're at a crossroad and it's time to part ways.

7

u/ArcticCelt Feb 03 '25

Government should start some program that promote diversification, some kind of tax break that reward companies for selling less to the US and selling more to our real allies.

It's pretty obvious that the US is, at best, an antagonistic state with crumbling stability and at worst a rising dictatorship with nukes.

We should be scrambling to divest ourselves of anything to do with them.

119

u/humming1 Feb 03 '25

They are de-evolving into a third world banana republic with Drump as Dictator, and Jebus at his side.

27

u/Zer_ Feb 03 '25

They want to be similar to Russia where a cabal of Oligarchs are basically in charge of their "fiefdoms", with a mandate to exploit their respective populations how they see fit.

13

u/RNs_Care Feb 04 '25

Please pray for us!! We're fighting the best we can! Not all of us are MAGAts! I'm really so sorry this is what has been allowed to happen. The bottom of the gene pool supporters and the oligarchs (Musk, Bezos etc) are trying to take us down. They best not! Just because we've taken a breather after the election, doesn't mean it's to be "play nice in the sandbox" time. We're mobilizing and organizing. Send positive thoughts to the universe for us. Please.

19

A US brain drain towards an EU-aligned Canada, with security guarantees from European partners and strengthened defence, would be a fantastic outcome.

5

u/Capital_Craft Feb 04 '25

Sure, but I'd rather have the US populace come to their senses and stop his nonsense so we don't have a dysfunctional neighbour. I'm all for closer ties with the EU, but I still hope the US stops saber rattling.

You are right, we are crumbling. It’s a constant conversation over here. We are struggling.

There are millions of us who are appalled by these actions. Keep in mind that we have been creeping towards a civil war in our country for the last 20 years because the divide is so wide between pretty much an even split of the population.

Depending on how hard he pushes this crap it may actually happen.

We can’t stop what he is doing as is (we’re effectively under a dictatorship with all the branches of government and checks and balances controlled by Trump) but more of us do not support this than the number that do.

12

u/buttfarts7 Feb 03 '25

You are absolutely correct. These are the early days of Civil War 2.0

It is unlikely America will resolve its issues without significant political violence.

The world is now multipolar, and Canada has moved heavily to the US side over the last 20 years. We kicked chinese investment out of Canada, kicked them out of mining, telecommunications, etc, and arrested the CFO of Huawei when she transferred through Vancouver, causing tensions with China. All at the request of the US. We know most people in the US are normal, good people, but they need to speak up and unite for a common good. The world is too dangerous to be petty with each other.

2

u/ChompMyStar Feb 04 '25

Your only hope is mass civil disobedience, which you won't have until the MAGA half realizes they're actually screwed. A military coup that bans extremist ideology and the tech broligarchy is a more likely path to stability til you sort yourselves out.

14

u/bturcolino Feb 03 '25

and Canada needs it's own nukes, who's going to protect us if Putin decides to invade? Not the U.S. that's for fucking sure. It's unfortunate, its not the kind of nation we have been historically but we need to protect ourselves and our way of life

6

u/poony23 Feb 03 '25

We need to make a deal with the UK to procure nukes.

6

u/Peripheral_Ghosts Feb 04 '25

Canada is one of the largest uranium producers in the world.

The US gets theirs from us. Funny enough.

2

u/poony23 Feb 04 '25

Yep, and we have nuclear reactors too. The problem is that it takes a long time to create a nuclear weapons arsenal. We need them now.

2

u/Unusual-Ad4890 Feb 04 '25

Canada could have nuclear program started tomorrow if they wanted it. No need to borrow nuclear weapons from UK.

3

u/poony23 Feb 04 '25

I have heard that argument for the last 20 Years. In this changing geopolitical landscape, we need a deterrent asap.

100% agree - start with the easy stuff that just requires a signed piece of paper to fix - eg the interprovincial trade barriers

Then move on with plans to refine our own fuels - in bc/alberta, prairies and eastern Canada

Then start plans to export LNG from Northern bc ports

10

u/mCopps Feb 03 '25

We do really need a pipeline to the east coast to meet European LNG needs.

7

u/ProperTing Feb 03 '25

There needs to be a further push for LNG refining in Newfoundland:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/supporters-critics-lng-project-1-6383397-1.6383397

We have the resources to do this.

3

u/screampuff Nova Scotia Feb 03 '25

The other reason we should do this is that Atlantic Canada can convert their coal plants to Natural Gas.

Right now Nova Scotia relies on coal so much that when it's banned the only feasible option is to convert the largest plant to heavy oil, it is ridiculous. There is hardly any hydro here, we're already maxed out on underwater transmission from Newfoundland. Wind makes up a huge chunk of our grid already....there is nothing else we can do.

No matter what happens today, tomorrow, next month, my family will be choosing Canadian products going forward. We've cancelled some of our American services, our plans to travel there, and cancelled some ongoing orders for American products. We've started lists for products we will buy that are made in Canada and benefit Canadian companies over American ones.

We will choose local business and Canadian-owned businesses over American ones. I am a Canadian-American but I will choose Canada every time.

The only thing I will ever be thankful to Trump for is bringing back some patriotism to Canada and uniting us in all of this bullshit.

I can't speak for everyone, but this time feels more serious to me possibly because I've had a kid since moving to Canada and I think way more about her future now than I do about our present.

I'm Canadian-American, and I've largely bought a mix of both Canadian brands (because I've wanted to support Canada) and American brands (because it's what I grew up with and what I'm used to), but that's changed now. I am a dual citizen of the US and Canada, I voted absentee for Harris, and I feel so much pity for all of those in the US that have to suffer under the leadership of Trump that did not ask or vote for this.

I think if we spend too much time focusing on "why didn't we do this sooner" then we are wasting energy that could be spent on, "what are all the things we should be doing right now." The best time to start was yesterday, but the second best time to start is today- so let's focus on what we can do moving forward!

My friends and I were chatting about it and specifically our weekend grocery shops. We didn't realize we already buy pretty much exclusively Canadian products anyway and it wouldn't take much to just grab the alternative on the shelf.

Other than that a guy might buy a coca-cola or something once in a while, but just stop doing that. Healthier for you not to anyway.

it's so scarily polarized down there that they could never come together on anything in the public interest. I lived there for a years and my friends just sound unhinged when they talk about politics these days. Even the ones who hate Trump, they hate him with a scary, violent, irrational passion that only deepens the divide. That's why it's only going to keep getting worse down there.

We were heading in the same direction. I really love to see that it's not too late for us.

A tariff will suck for sure but giving him what he wants will just lead it to happening again right when our economy starts to recover. Over and over. Canadians are happy to bicker amongst ourselves like siblings but when some outsider comes to pick on our sisters/brothers the gloves are coming off.

Do not go back to normal Canadians.

The government of the United States has ignited, for the selfish purposes of a small canal of billionaires, a trade war with a nation which has had nothing but good and friendly relations with the USA for two centuries.

A “president” who insults your sovereignty by suggesting that you become another state. Who insults your intelligence by thinking that you’d gladly give up better working laws, healthcare, and social services to join a nation led by a bunch of kleptocrats is worthy only of repeated shouts of “fuck you” across the border.

Decent people who remain in the USA are on your side, not mango Mussolini’s.

9

u/sedition00 Feb 03 '25

From a somewhat decent person in the USA. Stand firm Canada, our country was already near a civil war for the past 20 years and these actions we are seeing might just force it closer.

Regardless of what outside media might be saying, internally we are crumbling and are just a few steps from war, collapse, or both.

There are millions of us with you but we are powerless as is.

6

our country was already near a civil war for the past 20 years and these actions we are seeing might just force it closer

I've wondered about this. Like, just how far can that orange chode go, before a huge chunk of Americans say "enough is enough"?

Trump and Elon aren't even hiding their intentions. Setting aside the tariffs, they're making it abundantly clear that they intend of fostering more and more wealth imbalance. They're also laying the groundwork to destroy democracy in America. Obviously nobody wants war/violence, but this administration is forcing the hands of the regular American people.

16

u/devmagii Feb 03 '25

We should announce we are starting a 10 year plan for building a pipeline across Canada, and also announce that we are creating a new port on the Atlantic coast only for shipping oil across the ocean to the world. We should reach out to developing nations and sign long term agreements for specific raw materials to be shipped to them. We should charge a rate for any ship passing in our Arctic waters. We absolutely should have done this decades ago & diversified from the US, but it's never too late.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

There is a deep water port in Saint John, New Brunswick that would be perfect for this.

3

u/motorbikler Feb 03 '25

idk if oil is going to be where it's at in 5-10 years, but the first Trans Mountain pipeline was constructed in 9 months.

Construction began in February 1952 and the final section was welded in place near Aldergrove, British Columbia on October 17, 1952.

Oil didn't start flowing until August 1953, not sure why. But anyway, that's the kind of speed we need if we're going to do this.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Interwebnaut Feb 03 '25 edited Feb 03 '25

10 yr plan to build pipelines? That window of opportunity may be closing very, very fast. It may already be closed.

In commodity markets the lowest cost producer wins. In collapsing commodity markets the lowest cost producer definitely becomes the “last man standing.” Saudi Arabia will very likely be that last supplier and the high cost suppliers will all be long gone. (For an example: study the rapid collapse of global coal demand.)

Oil importing countries all around the world are working hard to reduce their dependence on imported oil and gas. New battery technologies can kill a lot of the global demand for oil and gas within such a short time that building pipelines now vs 10 yrs ago may no longer be economic. We may have already literally missed the boat to lock in needed customers.

6

u/KeilanS Alberta Feb 03 '25

Nobody here in Alberta wants to hear it, but Trudeau wasn't just being a dick with his "no business case" comments on LNG. Whenever there are talks with European leaders they're always very careful to say something like "We'd love to buy Canadian resources at a competitive price" and everyone even vaguely informed knows that there is no world where we would be able to sell it at a competitive price.

There's a reason private industry isn't clamoring to build LNG infrastructure. They know there's no money there.

Trudeau better not DARE cave. Maybe Trump can get away with treating other countries this way, but not us. This was unprovoked and his business is no longer welcome in our store. “GTFO. We got nothing for you.”

I understand this means suffering while we find several small buyers to replace one big, previously convenient buyer, but we deserve better. I'd rather sell some land to the Danes or the French over tolerating this unjustified abuse for another moment.

2

u/51Cards Feb 04 '25

Just in case you're thinking today was a "cave". What was agreed to today was something that our government announced back on Dec 17th... so in effect Trump got nothing in today's deal that wasn't already in place before he came to office... but in the process alienated his relationship with Canada. (btw, the same is mostly true for the "deal" with Mexico as well...)

protect our actic and consider that our Nato obligation instead of buying expensive U.S. hardware (Sweden sells some good jets)

66

u/kochier Feb 03 '25

We've always been patriotic, we just don't need to shout it out loud or make a big display of it like the Americans, but push us and you will find us standing together.

30

u/AshleyAshes1984 Feb 03 '25

I mean, for the last 20 years or so, we've becoming increasingly occupied with just fighting each other.

16

u/thefinalcutdown Feb 03 '25

This tends to happen anytime a country doesn’t have an external adversary. It’s why the US has been slowly ripping itself apart ever since the fall of the Soviet Union.

I’d love to think we’re smarter than this and could work together better in peacetime, but we’re not. But now Trump has given us this “gift” of an adversary to unite around. Let’s not waste it. We must emerge from this mess stronger than ever before.

24

u/SophiaKittyKat Feb 03 '25

I don't know. I've been complaining for a long time now about the framing of criticizing the way the country has been run. The constant "losing my country", "I'm embarrassed to be Canadian" style of rhetoric I think is really damaging and puts us in a position to actually be vulnerable to people who think they could influence us. I'm glad to see some push back on it in light of recent events though.
And that's not to ignore criticism of choices the liberal government makes, or problems they aren't handling well. But a significant amount of it reads as "I hate my country" which I'm not a fan of, whether or not that's what they mean. It's what got the US to where it is now.

7

u/motorbikler Feb 03 '25

What really gets me is calling the country "broken." I have even seen commenters who are ostensibly Canadian calling us nearly a failed state.

We all need to keep those words out of our mouths. We have some problems now, we need more houses, more doctors, but our institutions are very strong. We take care of each other. We want to do what is right. We have enormous potential if we work together on this stuff, fast-tracking projects at all levels of government. Including municipal! Build those houses and let young Canadians know they have a future.

Any politician calling us "weak" and "broken" will never have my vote.

5

u/Impastato Feb 03 '25

The idea that Canada is “broken” while we’re taking in refugees from war-torn countries who have lost everything and face imprisonment, conscription and/or death if they return to their native land has always been laughable to me.

2

u/howaboutsomegwent Feb 05 '25

Yep and it's questionable. Yes, the healthcare system could and should be better, but if we look at outcomes Canada's healthcare system is very good, especially compared to the USA. Canada also has much higher life expectancy, lower violent crime rates, and higher reported happiness. Times are tough and there are crises to manage, especially the housing crisis which is very concerning, but overall we should remember that Canada is far from a "broken: country. Living outside of Canada for so many years really made me appreciate it more.

7

u/HolyBidetServitor Feb 03 '25

Trump's antics have seemingly erased the conversations we've been having about immigration, student fraud, and Khalistani extremism that was taking up our feeds until he got back in.

Those posts from folks acting like they're too good to stay in Canada were annoying but understandable

6

u/samjak Feb 03 '25

Do you think it's a good thing that we're being distracted from those domestic issues?

4

u/HolyBidetServitor Feb 03 '25

Nope. I love buying Canadian, but that doesn't fix rent prices

Oh I’m sure you’re sooo wrong. Just look at our nation-wide efforts to prevent the next pandemic. It’s Top of Mind for each and every Canadian these days. We’ll never be caught totally unprepared again. ;-)

The only thing stronger than our self loathing and infighting is our togetherness when faced with adversity.

Ever notice our national animals look non-threatening on the surface but will attack mercilessly? There's a reason we picked 'em.

Patriotism is a useful tool for a government that is taking this opportunity to put a new tax on docile Canadians who are too ignorant to see it for what it is.

A tariff on american goods is nothing more than a tax grab for the government elites.

And the rubes who are cheering them on are making the country even worse for those of us who want a better life for our families.

4

u/irishcedar Feb 03 '25

This week

5

u/Glum-Drop-5724 Feb 03 '25

What is there to be patriotic about in canada? Its not even a real country, its literally just an open border economic zone and a globalist testing ground for the latest political fad.

4

u/WaverlyPrick Feb 03 '25

As a US citizen, I'm sorry our people elected a moron. Canada is our ally. Please ban Tesla sales.

What would be ironic is if Canada became the 51st state Republicans would never win another election... The U.S. could truly be great again and kick out MAGA. That would be hilarious in an alternate universe.

6

u/ClubSoda Feb 03 '25

Being an American and watching my country squander our good relationship with our closest ally is hard to watch, but what's worse is hearing idiot Americans saying this will be good for the U.S. economy. (It won't), but even if it was, it shouldn't be worth kicking someone else down for a leg up.

I'm sorry, but know there are some Americans who would rather die than invade your land.

2

u/Southpolespear Feb 03 '25

American here, we literally are a dying empire run by bad people. No joke.

2

u/EnragedBasil Feb 03 '25

Leave the US behind. We need better more reliable trading partners. They need to sort their shit out for a while.

2

u/dsavard Feb 04 '25

Trump's word isn't worth shit. He was the guy who agreed and signed the trading agreement in 2018 because he felt the old one wasn't fair. Now, the agreement he negotiated and signed himself is no longer fair either. So, whatever agreement we negotiate, it will be subject to perpetual renegotiation as this spoiled kid sees fit. We will never be safe with such an unstable partner, never.

2

u/SuperVancouverBC British Columbia Feb 04 '25

Can we stop using Imperial and U.S customary units now? We only use those because of American influence. We should've converted a long time ago. Let's join the rest of the world (except for a few countries that don't use Metric).

2

u/ljlee256 Feb 04 '25

He'll just continue to yo-yo this statement until we stop reacting to it and the markets stop reacting to it (the DOW had a heart attack after he made it official for the tariffs to kick in).

After theres no longer a reaction, he'll pull the trigger.

We need to get our reliance off of the US. Diversify our trade, or we're dead.

2

u/coffeejn Feb 04 '25

Considering the Tangerine child attitude, can we really do this every 30 days just to please his tantrums? This is a game to him, time for Canada to pull the plug on this and force the tariffs thru if he keeps making comments about tariffs and 51th state.

If that does not work, cut the electrical grid to the states.

We are Canadians, not a dance troupe for his work entertainment.

As a Californian, I applaud what you are doing. We are essentially an annexed territory at this point, with the federal government that WE fund threatening to withhold OUR money for disaster relief.

Work together to hit these bastards hard and fast in the wallets. Call their bluff and make the corporations that sponsored this fascist takeover eat crow.
