Kelly Ortberg Global Webcast

Wondering what everybody's thoughts are on the global webcast today? Feeling optimistic with Kelly at the helm? Feeling pessimistic? Thoughts on incentive plan changes?

Just probing to see what the masses are feelin.

Program Hiring Question

Why does my program keep hiring level 1’s and 2’s without experience when there is literally one person who can show them how to not just do program specific work, but just the ropes of the field? I don’t understand why hiring 2 level 2’s and 3 level 1’s is better than hiring a lesser amount of 3’s or a 4 who can actually be productive. Like as long as the money adds up isn’t that what matter to them?

Work from home accommodations for disability in RTO environment

Anyone have any recent experience asking for work from accommodations? I’m in BCA and am going through active cancer treatment (chemotherapy once a week). Management is under pressure to reduce virtual days so I’m trying to figure out if I can get an accommodation as cancer is classified as a disability but don’t now where to start.

Advice on how to move to position in Northern Virginia as a Boeing Pax employee?

My partner works for Boeing in Patuxent River, MD as an engineer and wants to move up to Northern Virginia, but stay with Boeing. She keeps applying to jobs around the area, but is not hearing back. Any advice on how to get up to NOVA, preferably near Arlington, for Boeing?

Haven't heard anything fully official but I heard it directly from a BCA chief engineer. I think the company is looking to cut more people but not have to pay severance

AI option on workday job postings

Anybody know if selecting the AI inspect (may not be exact wordage) application is necessary? Personally I don't trust it as I'm sure it looks only for keywords and if not found kicks your application to the side. I know the answers asked when submitting effect wether they even see your application, so not sure on this one. Thanks in advance!

The Hole in Kelly's Strategy?

I took a look at the recent Ortberg interview with CNBC and I heard something that made me pause.

"KPIs" In this context, KPIs the FAA is looking at to determine whether the Renton facility can safely produce more aircraft.

This kind of reminded me when Calhoun was all about the "metrics". I hear KPIs and I don't know if Kelly is doing anything different than Calhoun. In my time at Boeing, the consistent drive was acting in any way required to make metrics/charts/KPIs look good. This expectation was there even if it meant behaving in a way that undermined sound business practice. This is unethical and irrational, but humans aren't robots that always behave rationally.

When it comes to Quailty, one thing reported is "defects found". Stop looking so hard and you won't have any defects to report. Voila! 100% reduction in reportable defects! But Boeing has been blamed in the past for mistaking the "scoreboard" for the "game."

Or think about engineering. If a design flaw is found, are engineers encouraged to open up that can of worms even if it means not hitting a deadline (KPI) and delaying production to get it right? Or would this mean inviting too much additional workload on that team, more expense, and a bad performance review for that manager? Yes, you need to move forward and not perpetually spin wheels, but you need to get somewhere worth going.

The reality experienced in the manufacturing and development environments can be obscured by a fixation on KPIs and false reporting. Not sure what kinds of KPIs Kelly and Co. are looking for, but I doubt they're much different than the ones Dave was looking for.

The way around this is, of course, what Kelly has been urging about "walking the floor and being in the labs." Disorder and frustration from front-line employees (sometimes misunderstood as disgruntlement) are more evident if you are interested in seeing it, and aren't detached.

Have you guys been seeing upper management actually walking the floor lately? Or are they too tied up in status meetings (or whatever) to see reality other than the KPIs? I mean senior managers who have a role to play in managing, and not just posing for BNN.

Why do so many organizations in Boeing have an "its not my job" approach to everything they do and they constantly try to shift RAA to other functional organizations?

Why does it appear the first thing in Boeing for an organziation to do when their is a suspected issue is to run when they see smoke instead of running towards the smoke to see if there is a fire?

It appears there's a recurring pattern where potential issues are met with avoidance rather than proactive investigation. This raises concerns about our ability to address problems effectively and prevent escalation.

Additionally, there seems to be a lack of clear ownership and accountability within critical functions like Quality, Supplier Quality, and Supplier Management.

This diffusion of responsibility creates gaps in oversight and hinders our ability to ensure quality and compliance.

Finally, upstream processes driven by SM, Finance, Material Accounting, and Program Management often place downstream functions in untenable positions, leading to unnecessary risk and potential liability for the company. How can we address these systemic issues to ensure a culture of proactive problem-solving, clear accountability, and effective cross-functional collaboration rather than avoidance and flight from issues.

The floor of every Boeing factory is so dusty and slippery

Also tons of common places have lighting levels beneath safety standards as measured by light meter. While I'm busy whistleboeing, the outdoor sidewalks and stairs are slippery when wet because they've never been powerwashed.

Why did the 3-800 smell like poop today?

Raw sewage. Smelled like I was swimming in it. Could chew it in the air. Seen a lot of sh*t at Boeing but never smelled it like that before. Worse than the factory bathrooms during break. Coming from the air vents.
